Rosoboronexport at MAKS 2011 – New Dynamic and Spectacular Format
9:19 GMT, August 15, 2011 The Rosoboronexport Joint Stock Company will demonstrate to its foreign partners in excess of a hundred pieces of Russian arms and materiel at the 10th MAKS 2011 International Aviation and Space Salon to be held in Zhukovsky outside Moscow, Russia, on 16-21 August, 2011.
Being the general sponsor of the air show Rosoboronexport considers MAKS 2011 to be one of the milestones in its exhibition activities. It is there that foreign customers will be able to familiarize themselves with Russian military hardware and take a real look at almost all export versions of national aircraft, helicopters and air defence systems.
A special separate pavilion (D0) has been built by Rosoboronexport for the anniversary MAKS 2011 air show. It accommodates an interactive exhibition system, the pilot version of which was displayed at the IDEX 2011 in February. Back then the system displayed main export weapons for the Army in a new format. The interactive exhibition system has been refined for MAKS 2011, and now visitors will see on a wide panoramic screen examples of employing Russian fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, including Su-35 and MiG-29M fighters, the Yak-130 combat trainer, Ka-52A and Mi-28NE combat helicopters, the Mi-171Sh military transport and the Mi-26T transport helicopter. A total of 15 aircraft will be showcased. Given the fact that the system is based on new simulation technologies, it is capable of simulating various situations, including combat ones, as well as demonstrating capabilities of national materiel more comprehensively, and what is even more important, in the dynamic and spectacular format.
At the present time aircraft and air defence systems account for over half of all export deliveries of Rosoboronexport. Interim 2011 indices show that the annual aircraft export plan will be implemented in full.
“This year we have successfully cooperated with our traditional partners – India and China. Cooperation with Indonesia, Vietnam, and Myanmar gains steam as well. In addition to that we are upbeat about defence cooperation with a number of African states. Russia enjoys certain growth points, and we start taking more decisive actions,” said Alexander Mikheev, Rosoboronexport Deputy Director General and head of Rosoboronexport delegation at MAKS 2011.
In addition to traditional well-mastered forms of cooperation, such as military hardware procurements, licence transfers, spare parts deliveries, repairs, etc., the company has recently actively embarked on new forms of cooperation, including joint development of advanced aircraft. For instance, this line of work is actively pursued with India within the framework of the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) development programme, the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme and the Su-30MKI (Super 30) deep modernisation programme.
Russian helicopter exports actively grow with each passing year. The State-Of-The-Art technologies and high scientific potentials of such Russian design bureaux as the Moscow-based Mil Helicopter Plant and the Kamov Company allow Rosoboronexport to successfully compete in the international arms market.
“It goes without saying that the lead is held by renowned Mi-17-family military transport helicopters. Aircraft of this type were delivered to Thailand and Indonesia in early 2011, and the final batch of such helicopters will soon be shipped to Peru. We will also start delivering Mi-17V-5s to India this year. Besides, we have signed contracts for delivery of such helicopters to the Afghan Air Force with the US Department of Defence, as well as Sri Lanka,” Alexander Mikheev pointed out.
Rosoboronexport has also secured leading positions in the international air defence systems market. Promising lines of activity include deliveries of several types of S-300 and S-400 family long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems, Buk-M2E and Tor-M2E SAM systems, the Pantsir-S1 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun and missile system (SPAAG), Igla-S man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS), and electronic warfare equipment, as well as services, aimed at establishing and equipping local air defence hardware repair facilities.
Major potential customers in this field comprise African, Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Latin American states.
Rosoboronexport will familiarise visitors to and participants in the MAKS 2011 air show with the following main pieces of Russian arms and materiel:
Aircraft: Yak-130 combat trainer, MiG-29SMT and MiG-35D tactical fighters, Su-30MK, Su-30MK2, and Su-35 multi-role fighters, and Su-32 fighter-bomber.
Helicopters: Mi-171Sh troop carrier, Mi-26T2 heavy-lift transport helicopter, Mi-35M, Mi-35P, Ka-52A, and Mi-28NE combat helicopters, and Ka-31 radar picket helicopter.
Air Defence Systems: Buk-M2E and Pechora-2M SAM systems, Antei-2500, S-400, and Tor-M2E SAM system, ZSU-23-4M4 Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG), Igla-S MANPADS, and Strelets launchers and hardware for Igla MANPADS.
The Organisation will also exhibit a wide range of air weapons, various radars, command and control (C2) system and command posts (CP) for Air Defence Forces, and simulators for training pilots and air defence system crews.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
The Su-35 is a multi-role super-manoeuvrable fighter, based on fifth-generation technologies. It features a new thrust vector control (TVC) power plant, an increased power and a greater service life. An improved cockpit management system, a combined electronic/mechanical scanning radar, new navigation and radio communications equipment, a highly efficient electronic countermeasures (ECM) system and advanced weapons ensure the Su-35’s significant competitive advantage.
The Yak-130, selected as a basic training aircraft for the Russian Air Force, is a versatile aircraft. It is expected to replace the famous L-39 Albatross trainers, operated by many CIS member-states. A special onboard combat mode simulation system ensures high-quality flight crew training within a very short period of time. At the same time the Yak-130 can also be employed as a light combat aircraft, which nowadays appeals to many customers.
The Mi-28NE combat helicopter incorporates the vast combat experience of its predecessor – the Mi-24 combat transport. The Mi-28NE is indispensable on the contemporary battlefield due to its unique survivability, a wide range of weapon systems, and the ability to operate by day and night. The helicopter has been in service with the Russian Armed Forces since 2009. Pilots have appreciated outstanding flight characteristics and combat capabilities of the helicopter.
Excellent flight characteristics, ensured by coaxial rotors, and the unique manoeuvrability allow the Ka-52A helicopter to carry out fast combat manoeuvres to take a favourable attack position. Multi-function avionics enable the helicopter to fly, navigate, and fire its weapons by day and night in any season. The Ka-52A can also be employed as an airborne command post and a scout helicopter.
A battery of four Tor-M2E four-channel SAM system combat vehicles is capable of simultaneously engaging up to 16 targets, approaching from any direction, at a range of up to 12 km and an altitude of 10 m up to 10 km in any weather by day and night. Therefore, its combat effectiveness almost doubled as compared with that of its predecessor Tor-M1. According to experts, the Tor SAM system boasts unrivalled capabilities.
A battalion of Buk-M2E multi-channel SAM systems is capable of simultaneously engaging up to 24 targets, approaching from any direction, at a range of up to 45-50 km. The SAM system is designed to kill tactical and strategic aircraft, cruise missiles, helicopters and other aerodynamic targets within the entire altitude envelope (15 m up to 25 km) in an adverse ECM environment and under heavy enemy fire. The system can also effectively destroy hostile surface targets and engage ground-based targets with sufficient radar signatures.

MAKS 2011: Russian Helicopters relaunches Mi-34 production
August 17, 2011
Russian Helicopters plans to start serial production of its new Mi-34C1 in 2012, according to company representatives at the MAKS air show outside Moscow.
The holding company for Russian helicopter manufacturers made the modernised Mi-34C1 the focal point of its participation at the show, unveiling a prototype in military colours outside its exhibition as well as a civil version in the static display.
Russian Helicopters Mi-34 programme director Dmitry Rodin told Shephard the aircraft was being targeted at the military and civil training market and also had application as a light transport, surveillance and sport aircraft.
‘The first sphere is certainly training. If you are talking about military pilots, the Mi-34 is the only helicopter in its class that can provide the aerobatics needed to train in the full range of helicopter manoeuvres. For training pilots in combat operations, that’s very important,’ Rodin said.
The Russian Armed Forces are expected to receive large numbers of Mi-28N and Ka-52 attack helicopters between 2011 and 2018 under the new ‘State Armament Programme 2020’.
The four-seat aircraft, which is currently finalising flight testing at Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, features a four bladed main rotor, two bladed tail rotor and unretractable landing skids.
The power train is based on a 365hp M9VF radial piston engine and features a built-in gearbox and electronic ignition. The fuel system has negative g chambers for aerobatics, making the aircraft the only light helicopter capable of 3g performance, according to the company.
‘In addition to the pilot, the useful loading is around 400kg so the aircraft is quite capable and versatile,’ Rodin said.
The Mi-34C1 has a MTOW of 1,450kg, a service ceiling of 4,450m, a top speed of 220km/h and a cruise speed of 180km/h. Other new features include a French hydraulic system, a nose section made of composite materials, a revised interior, an added baggage compartment and hard points where a variety of specialist equipment, such as FLIR systems or search lights, could be fitted.
The original Mi-34C was abandoned in 2002 with only 22 examples built. Rodin said as well as giving the design team a starting point when developing the new version, basing the Mi-34C1 on the earlier aircraft meant it only needed supplemental certification, which was not expected to take as long as certifying a completely new aircraft.
‘Serial production will start next year and we have already sold all the aircraft for next year and 2013. We are still determining how many to produce per year but the minimal base will be around 20 per year and it will likely be a lot more than that,’ he explained.
Russian helicopter operator UTair has already announced an order for 10 aircraft and given the size of the company – UTair is continuously among the world’s top four civil helicopter operators by volume of operations and is the largest in Russia with a fleet of more than 250 helicopters of all types – Russian Helicopters will be hoping it adopts the Mi-34C1 for its training requirements. First deliveries are scheduled for September 2012.
