Indian Navy Warships Conclude Israeli Visit
INS Trishul is the second ship of the Talwar Class guided missile frigates (Krivak III, Project 11356) built in Russia for the Indian Navy. the vessel is armed with Club-N anti-ship cruise missiles. In later models the Club-N was replaced by the supersonic BrahMos missile.
An Indian Navy group comprising four vessels deployed in the Mediterranean Sea visited the Israeli port of Haifa last week, as the two countries celebrate 20 years of diplomatic ties this year. The vessels include the Indian built Delhi Class guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai (D62), the Russian built Talwar Class (Krivak III) class guided missile frigate INS Trishul (F43), Indian built Godavari-Class (Project 16) frigate INS Gomti (F21) and Russian built INS Aditya replenishment and repair ship (A59).
INS Mumbai is one of three Indian built Delhi Class guided missile destroyers currently serving in the Indian navy.
The vessels are part of the Indian navy’s western fleet. The Mediterranean tour of the four warships is being headed by Rear Admiral A R Karve.
Indian warships have regularly paid visits to ports in the West Asia and East Africa, reaffirming their peaceful presence and solidarity with countries in the region; the four-day visit in Israel reaffirms the growing Indo-Israeli relations and continued cooperation between the two countries” Indian officials said.
In recent years the Indian Navy has expanded the use of Israeli systems on the new classes of ships. Among the visiting ships, only the Gomti carries Israeli Barak anti-missile systems, however, almost all new Indian built classes of warships currently fielded or under construction in India, are loaded with Israeli systems, primarily defensive electronics, radars and missile and Barak systems. The Indo-Israeli Barak 8 counter-air system is scheduled for deployed on the lead ship of the P15A class, INS Kochi, following completion of the system’s testing, currently underway in India and Israel. Barak 8 and its associated IAI Elta EL/M-2248 radar provide the Indian Navy an AEGIS-class weapon system, extending its active air defense capability far beyond current capabilities.

Indian Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma announced the nation's first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) INS Vikrant will not be ready until 2017, three years later than the planned schedule. However The New Indian Express daily reports that design work on the much larger aircraft carrier INS Vishal has already started.
“There were problems in manufacturing the gear box, which involves complex technology. The truck bringing generators overturned near Pune last year, further delaying the schedule,” Indian Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma explained.

Preparations for building INS Vikrant started in 2008, and the keel was laid in February 2009. The carrier was floated out of its dry dock on 29 December 2011.
The vessel is designed to deploy up to 30 fixed-wing aircraft, primarily the Mikoyan MiG-29K and the naval variant of the HAL Tejas Mark 2, and about 10 helicopters. It features a STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) configuration with a ski-jump. It will displace 40,000 tons and measure 262 meters long.
At the same time, sources told The New Indian Express dailythat design work for INS Vishal has already started. INS Vishal is set to displace 65,000 tons: That's 25,000 tons more than INS Vikrant. INS Vishal will be close to Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers in terms of size and displacement. According to rumors, this carrier will be CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take Off Barrier Arrested Recovery) similar to US Navy super carriers, however nothing has been officially confirmed and it is not clear yet how India would obtain the catapult technology.
Indian Navy is set to receive INS Vikramaditya (ex-Admiral Gorshkov) by year-end.

India successfully test-fires Agni-II missile
Sharpening its missile teeth, India on Thursday successfully test-fired its medium range nuclear capable Agni-II missile with a strike range of 2000km as part of a user trial by the Army from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast. "The trial of the surface-to-surface missile was conducted
from a mobile launcher from the Launch Complex-4 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at around 8.48am," defence sources said.
Describing the launch as a complete success, ITR Director MVKV Prasad said, "All mission parameters were met during the trial of the indigenously developed missile."
Agni-II Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) has already been inducted into the services and today’s test was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Army with logistic support provided by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
"The 2000km range versatile missile, already inducted and part of countries arsenal for strategic deterrence, was launched as a training exercise by the armed forces," a DRDO scientist said.
The two-stage missile equipped with advanced high accuracy navigation system, guided by a novel scheme of state of the earth command & control system was propelled by solid rocket propellant system, he said.
The entire trajectory of the trial was tracked by a battery of sophisticated radars, telemetry observation stations, electro-optic instruments and naval ships located near the impact point in the down range area of the sea.
The 20-metre long Agni-II is a two-stage, solid-propelled ballistic missile. It has a launch weight of 17 tonnes and can carry a payload of 1000kg over a distance of 2000km.
The state-of-the-art Agni-II missile was developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory along with other DRDO laboratories and integrated by the Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Hyderabad, the sources said.
Agni-II is part of the Agni series of missiles which includes Agni-I with a 700km range, Agni-III with a 3,000km range, Agni-IV and Agni-V.
The first prototype of Agni-II missile was carried out on April 11, 1999.
Though trial conducted on May 19, 2009 and the first night trial on November 23, 2009 from Wheelers Island could not meet all the parameters, all other trials including the last one carried out on September 30, 2011 from the same base were successful.

Embraer Delivers First AEW&C Aircraft to India
São Paulo, August 16, 2012 – Embraer Defense and Security today delivered the first EMB 145 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) class of aircraft to the Government of India, in a ceremony held at Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil. The delivery follows successful completion of ground and flight tests of the aircraft which met operational targets established by both Embraer and Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO). Later on the aircraft will be delivered to the Indian Air Force after integration of missions systems of DRDO by CABS in India.
“The collaboration with DRDO in such a complex program strengthens the ties between Brazil and India”, said Luiz Carlos Aguiar, President & CEO of Embraer Defense and Security. “We are very proud to meet the expectations of our clients in providing CABS, DRDO with this platform.”
“This EMB 145 AEW&C features major capabilities such as in-flight refueling system, significant increase in electric and cooling capacity and a comprehensive set of structural changes to which will allow the installation of the advanced mission systems that have been developed by India’s CABS (Centre for Air Borne Systems) along with its work centers of DRDO”, said Dr. Elangovan, Chief Controller R&D (Avionics & Aero) of DRDO.
“The success of this programme is the symbol of cooperation between India and Brazil”, said Dr. Christopher Programme Director AEW&C and Director CABS. “The airborne Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) designed and developed by CABS, is now flying on top of this modified Embraer aircraft is one example of such cooperation. CABS, DRDO will integrate all other mission systems in India and deliver it to Indian Air Force”.
Remaining AEW&C aircraft are due to be delivered to the Indian Air Force as part of a contract signed in 2008 that includes a comprehensive package for training, technical support, spare parts, and ground support equipment. These aircraft, upon entry-into-service, will join four Embraer Legacy 600 jets – currently operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF) for the transportation of Indian government officials and foreign dignitaries – and a fifth Embraer Legacy 600 which belongs to the Border Security Force (BSF), under India’s Home Ministry.

NEW DELHI — India and the United States soon will sign a $1 billion deal for the purchase of 22 attack helicopters, an Indian Defence Ministry official said.
The Boeing AH-64D Apache helicopter beat the Russian Mi-28N Night Hunter, outscoring the Russian helicopter on more than 20 technical points, said an Indian Air Force official.
The helicopters can fly day or night, in all weather, and are capable of operations in desert and mountainous environments. The helicopters will have an empty weight of about 2,500 kilograms and have advanced anti-armor capability.
The helicopters will be equipped with a radar warning receiver, allowing them to intercept, identify and prioritize multiple airborne and ground-based radio frequency emitters.
The purchase will include a supply of Hellfire Longbow missiles, Stinger missiles and 12 fire-control radars.
India is also developing its own light attack helicopter through state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics. It is expected to be ready by 2013-2014.
The helicopter is being designed for use in altitudes of up to 26,000 feet. Armament would include a 20mm cannon, as well as rockets and missiles for a variety of missions, including air-to-air, air-to-surface and anti-radiation.

Après le Qatar en juillet, l’Inde annonce sa volonté d’acquérir les hélicoptères Apache Block III américains pour 1,4 milliard de dollars.
Durant les essais menés par l’armée indienne, l’engin de combat de Boeing dans sa version AH-64D Longbow a rempli toutes les exigences exprimées par le cahier des charges, là où le Mi-28 Havoc de la société russe Mil a échoué.
Les deux entreprises s’affrontent sur un autre terrain, toujours en Inde, pour remporter le contrat portant sur 15 hélicoptères lourds de transport de troupes. Boeing propose le Chinook et Mil le Mi-26.
En dépensant 1,4 milliard de dollars, l’Inde obtiendra, en plus des 22 Apaches, 812 missiles AGM-114L-3 Hellfire Longbow, 542 missiles AGM-114R-3 Hellfire-II, 245 missiles Stinger Block I-92H et 12 radars de définition de cible AN/APG-78 de Longbow, pour les principaux équipements annexes.
Cette commande FMS entre les deux pays vient renforcer le statut de l'Inde comme client majeur des Etats-Unis dans le secteur militaire. Avec 4,1 milliards d’euros dépensés en 2011, l’Inde est le deuxième plus gros client des USA derrière l’Arabie Saoudite.

wow,du Longbow FCR et du stinger a l´inde,qui aurait dit ca avant 10 ans,les pakis vont s´en mordre les doigts avec leur pocker afghan. entre 22 a 1,4B$ pour l´inde,et 24 a 3B$ pour le qatar,on voit a quoi sert la concurrence et ne pas etre khaliji sans missiles je crois que c´est facturé 45M$,pas mal pour un BlockIII,ca se democratise..

NEW DELHI: Addressing questions raised over the process of selecting Rafale fighter planes, Government is going ahead with the procurement of 126 French combat aircraft and effort is being made to complete the deal within this financial year.
Contract negotiations for the multi-billion dollar deal will resume soon, Government sources told PTI here.
Questions had been raised over the process by an MP besides some other quarters but a committee of independent monitors has given a clean chit to the process, they said.
Government is making efforts to conclude the deal during this financial year, sources said.
The examination of the process was ordered by defence minister A K Antony after former MP Mysura Reddy questioned the method of selecting Rafale as the lowest bidder for the deal.
Responding to the charges levelled by him, Antony had recently issued a letter to the former TDP MP saying that the Contract Negotiations Committee (CNC) has been directed to proceed to complete its deliberations and finalise its report.
In his letter to Reddy, Antony said, "the issues raised by you were examined by Independent monitors who have concluded that the approach and methodology adopted by the CNC in the evaluation of the commercial proposals thus far has been reasonable and appropriate and within terms of the Request for Proposal and Defence Procurement Procedure."
"Before any further action is taken, the entire issue of approach and methodology adopted by the CNC to determine the L-1 vendor as well as your letter and other references received in this regard will be re-examined by the Defence Ministry to ascertain that the entire procurement process is reasonable, appropriate and as per the laid down procedure," Antony had said.

Deux hélicoptères de l'armée indienne en mission d'entraînement se sont écrasés jeudi dans l'Etat du Gujarat (ouest), faisant au moins cinq morts, a-t-on appris de source policière.
Selon les médias, les deux appareils, de conception russe, sont entrés en collision après leur décollage d'une base militaire. Les autorités n'ont pas confirmé ces informations.
Trois militaires ont par ailleurs été blessés dans l'accident des deux hélicoptères Mi-17, qui forment le plus gros de la flotte vieillissante de l'armée de l'air indienne.
"Les deux hélicoptères transportant neuf soldats et officiers se sont écrasés dans une plantation de coton" dans le district de Jamnagar, a indiqué par téléphone un responsable de la police locale, Harikrishna Patil, depuis les lieux de l'accident.
Cinq personnes ont été tuées, trois autres blessées et hospitalisées tandis que les secours tentaient d'extraire des débris une neuvième personne, dont l'état n'a pas été précisé, a-t-on appris de même source.
L'Inde veut acquérir jusqu'à 400 hélicoptères pour moderniser sa flotte.

L'Inde et la Chine vont reprendre les exercices militaires conjoints
L'Inde et la Chine, les deux grands pays émergents d'Asie aux relations souvent tendues, vont reprendre leurs manoeuvres militaires conjointes, après une interruption de quatre années, a annoncé mardi le ministre indien de la Défense A. K. Antony.
"Nous avons décidé" cette mesure, a déclaré le ministre indien, après des discussions avec le général Liang Guanglie, premier ministre chinois de la Défense à se rendre en Inde depuis huit ans. "Nous sommes parvenus à un consensus sur des visites à haut niveau, des échanges de personnels, la sécurité maritime (...) et la coopération entre les deux Marines", a déclaré pour sa part le ministre chinois.
Les deux ministres de la Défense ont également décidé d'améliorer la coopération pour lutter contre la piraterie dans le golfe d'Aden et au large de la Somalie, a précisé un porte-parole indien.
Les deux pays ont souvent eu des relations tendues, en raison de disputes sur le tracé de la frontière. Ils avaient cessé leurs exercices militaires conjoints en 2008. "Nous avons beaucoup discuté de la situation en Asie du Sud, dans la région Asie-Pacifique, nous avons abordé beaucoup de sujets", a déclaré le ministre indien. "Nous avons eu une conversation franche sur tous les sujets (...) y compris les questions frontalières", a-t-il ajouté. Les deux pays s'étaient livrés une guerre brève mais meurtrière en 1962 à propos de l'Etat indien du nord-est, l'Arunachal Pradesh.
Depuis, les deux pays ont tenu 14 réunions sur le sujet, sans jamais parvenir à un accord. Le renforcement de l'infrastructure militaire de la Chine tout au long de sa frontière avec l'Inde est mal perçu par New Delhi, qui tend de plus en plus à considérer Pékin comme sa plus grande menace, plus que le Pakistan, l'ennemi héréditaire.
"Les efforts de l'armée chinoise en vue d'échanges amicaux et de coopération (...) entre les nations d'Asie du Sud ont pour objectif de maintenir la sécurité religieuse et la stabilité, et ne visent pas une tierce partie", a assuré mardi le général chinois. Le premier exercice militaire conjoint entre l'Inde et la Chine avait eu lieu à Kunming (Chine) en 2007, et le deuxième à Belgaum (Inde) un an plus tard.
Une troisième session, prévue pour se dérouler en Chine, avait été repoussée après une dégradation des relations entre les deux pays, causée notamment par le refus de la Chine d'accorder un visa à un officier militaire indien basé au Cachemire, une des régions disputées
India to ink $11 billion MMRCA deal with Rafale by next month: Indian Air Force official
BANGALORE: India plans to sign the $11 billion MMRCA (Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft) deal with French Rafale by the end of this month-end or next month, a senior Indian Air Force official said today.
"I find no reason why it shouldn't be signed by the end of this month or next month", Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command, IAF, Air Marshal Rajinder Singh said.

An Indian Hawk in flight
We have received a Request for Proposal (RFP) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for a potential order to supply products and services for the manufacture of 20 Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) aircraft.
The aircraft, to be built by HAL in Bengaluru, will fulfill the Indian Air Force’s requirement for its prestigious aerobatic team.
Upon successful conclusion, this would be the third contract placed on us for the supply of materials and equipment for the Hawk Mk132, building upon previous orders of 66 aircraft in 2004, comprising supply of 24 Hawk aircrafts in fly-away condition and 42 aircraft built under license by HAL, and a further 57 aircraft in 2010. Under these contracts, we have worked closely with the Indian MOD and HAL to establish a production line in India where the aircraft are now assembled. Hawk trainers already in service with the Indian Air Force are performing well.
Guy Griffiths, Group MD, International, said, “This is a tremendous opportunity to build on the success of Hawk in India and demonstrates the progress we are making in capturing significant opportunities to address the defence modernization requirements of the Indian Government. The UK Royal Air Force aerobatics team Red Arrows has used the BAE Systems Hawk since 1979.

Des dysfonctionnements détectés pendant les essais du porte-avions indien VIKRAMADITYA vont retarder la livraison du navire à la Marine Indienne, selon ce que le quotidien économique russe Kommersant a révélé le lundi 17 septembre 2012.
Le VIKRAMADITYA, qui est l’ancien croiseur lance-missiles russes AMIRAL GORSHKOV converti en porte-avions, devait être remis à la Marine Indienne le 4 décembre prochain, après plusieurs glissements de planning et de budgets. Mais ses essais en mer ont révélé un certain nombre de défauts et la livraison du navire n’interviendrait plus avant octobre 2013.
Les problèmes ont commencé quand le grand bâtiment a voulu faire ses essais à pleine puissance, pour voir s’il atteignait la vitesse maximale prévue. L’âge et la technologie des machines étant, les chaudières qui alimentent les turbines à vapeur ont rendu l’âme les unes après les autres : « Sept des huit chaudières qui alimentent les turbines en vapeur sont hors service », selon ce qu’un responsable a déclaré à Kommersant.
Ce responsable, qui avait préparé le VIKRAMADITYA pour ses essais, explique que la défaillance des chaudières est due au refus par l’Inde d’utiliser de l’amiante comme calorifugeage des chaudières, « sous prétexte » que ce matériau est dangereux pour l’équipage.

During the current visit to the Maldives the Indian Defence Minister visited Maafilaafushi yesterday and inspected the military facilities and training centers in the island. The Minister was accompanied by his Maldivian counterpart Mohamed Nazim, Indian High Commissioner to Maldives D M Mulay and members of the Indian delegation.
Speaking during the ceremony in Maafilaafushi, Brigadier General Abdulla Shamal stressed that yesterday’s event further signified the long existing friendly relations between Maldives and India. He added that the CMTC would enhance the capacity and capability of the military and the Coast Guard in patrolling and protecting Maldivian waters.
Brigadier General Abdulla Shamal further highlighted that India has always been the oldest friend of the Maldives and pointed out the many assistance and cooperation received from the Indian military over the years. On that note, he added that India has always been the quickest to respond in times of need and highlighted the 1988 coup and the Tsunami disaster of 2004.
Enhanced military exchanges, anti-piracy cooperation and maritime security are among key issues to be discussed, reliable sources said.
Antony's visit to the Maldives is even more significant due to China's increased activity in the strategically located island nation. In November last year, China opened a grand embassy in Male, a move that speaks to Beijing's strategic intent to strengthen relations with the Maldives.
India has ramped up security and military cooperation with the Maldives over the years through joint exercises and training programs between the armed forces.
The two countries have also been participating in Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance.
Increased surveillance also comes as a result of the rise of Islamic radicalism in the nation, better known for coral beaches and exotic holiday islands.
He also thanked the Indian government for the benefits of the annual joint training exercise "Dosti" conducted to increase the capacity of the Maldives military.
