Latest PLA navy destroyer completes sea trial
The Chinese navy's latest 052D-class destroyer was recently unveiled to the public when a set of photos online showed its sea trial at the mouth of the Huangpu River, causing a further wave of sensation following the ship's launch last year.
Yang Yujun, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, said: "There is nothing to be surprised about. Commissioning ships and aircraft is common in the military. It is not worth excessive interpretation."
The vessel is the first of China's 052D-class destroyers. It is equipped with the world's most advanced anti-aircraft system – the second-generation of what is called the Chinese Aegis.
The U.S. media claimed that the 052D would even be equipped with China's own Donghai-10 cruise missiles, making the destroyer the first-ever surface vessel in the PLA navy capable of such capability.
Donghai-10 missiles used to be exclusive to China's nuclear-powered 093-class hunter-killer submarines. They reportedly have an effective range of 1,500-2,500 KM, and are said to be even stronger than the U.S. Tomahawks.
Canadian-based Kanwa Asian Defence Monthly reported that the 052D was modified based on the 052C-class destroyer, which was launched in 2003. As of today, three 052D ships have been launched from Jiangnan Shipyard.
The online photos show that the 052D has a similar hull layout to its predecessor, the 052C, and it looks like the U.S Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. On the ship's bridge, four plates of phased array radar antennas replaced the 052C's arc-shape radar, which is the most striking difference from the earlier model.
A set of missile vertical launching systems (VLS) have been installed on the front and rear decks of the 052D. The VLS features a square-mouth launcher – modified from the earlier round-shape – which looks like a chocolate bar. The system on the 052D bears a striking resemblance to the MK41 VLS on the U.S. Aegis warships. In addition, the 052D now has 64 VLS units, compared to the 48 on the earlier model.
A Russian military news website wrote that the upgraded VLS "shows the versatility of PLA technology – the system is capable of launching various types of missiles in different situations."
The report also said that up to four smaller-sized missiles could fit into each launch tube, giving the vessel greater flexibility and more fire power during combat. According to the report, the 052D's VLS supports both cold and hot launches, a feature which is no warships anywhere currently possess.
On top of the destroyer's helicopter apron, a 24-unit Haihongqi-10 short-range anti-aircraft missile system has replaced the old 7-unit 30mm multi-barrel guns for last-minute close-range defense. This upgrade extends the vessel's capability to defend against sea-skimming anti-ship missiles to 10 km.
In addition, 052D's weapon system features a 130mm/70 caliber stealth gun. Its unusual shape aroused the curiosity of online fans.
These new features enable 052D-class ships to engage in various kinds of warfare, including anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, anti-surface vessel and anti-ground target missions, with capabilities similar to the U.S. Navy's Ticonderoga-class cruisers and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
In an interview with China Central Television, military expert Yin Zhuo said that 052D could be used in an aircraft carrier battle group, a statement supported by Prof. Li Li from the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army.
It is likely that the 052D-class destroyers will form a shield, 200km in radius, to protect China's future Liaoning aircraft carrier battle group from aerial enemy attacks.
The sea trial of the 052D-class destroyer has made it clear that the vessel will join the Liaoning aircraft carrier's attack missions, while protecting the battle group mostly from enemy air strikes.

New practise flights from Liaoning for J-15 fighter
A J-15 fighter jet completed a series of difficult take-off-and-landing tests on the Liaoning aircraft carrier, state media reported yesterday.
The aircraft completed the manoeuvres while heavily loaded on Sunday, Xinhua said. The report did not say how the aircraft was equipped, but added that it was carrying various weapons.
"The tests were complicated. The test items ranged from easy to difficult levels," the Xinhua report said, adding that the practise runs served as a "foundation for the Liaoning to continue with more in-depth training and experiments".
The development of the J-15 is a key step in the PLA Navy's ambitions to build a "blue water" carrier battle group. Two J-15 jets made successful landings on the Liaoning last year.
Beijing-based naval expert Li Jie was quoted on the website of the People's Daily as saying the various J-15 load-outs would aid understanding about the compatibility of the carrier.
Retired People's Liberation Army colonel Yue Gang said real ammunition might be used in the next stage of training.
"More missions can be carried out if the fighter jet can carry more types of weapons on board," he said. "So far, the tests conducted for the aircraft carrier have achieved satisfactory results and the progress is substantial."
Last month, President Xi Jinping observed a training session on the carrier, and called on the military to continue improving its capabilities.
Xi, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission, called on the Liaoning's captain and commissar to help build a strong navy.

New Supply ship commissioned for PLA Navy fleet
2013-09-13 — A supply ship was commissioned for the East China Sea fleet of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on Thursday. The supply ship Chaohu is a Chinese-made ocean-going vessel capable of replenishing both dry and liquid cargo, said Zhang Weidong, the ship’s captain.
The ship, with hull number 890, successfully completed supply missions to two naval vessels during a trial voyage conducted recently, according to military sources. Chaohu has a displacement of more than 20,000 tons and is able to sail to all kinds of sea areas except polar and ice regions, according to Zhang.
PLA Navy to modify purchased Lada-class submarines with Russia
Sources from Russia's Rubin Design Bureau based in St Petersburg said that the Lada-class mini submarines sold to the People's Liberation Army Navy will be equipped with Chinese power and electronic fire-control systems, reports the Kanwa Defense Review operated by Andrei Chang or Pinkov (Andrei Chang), a military analyst in Canada. The purchase was confirmed in a report by the US-based Strategy Page, but it is said that the four Lada class diesel-electric submarines will be modified specifically for China. Based on the PLA Navy's requests, the air independent propulsion system based on oxygen-hydrogen fuel cells — which allows the submarine to extend its underwater endurance to more than 15 days — will be removed. Because the Lada-class submarine will not be used by the PLA Navy for ocean-going combat, the oxygen-hydrogen fuel cell is no longer necessary. The PLA Navy will instead power the submarine's air independent propulsion system with Chinese Stirling engines. The country's Type 041 Yuan-class submarines and Type 032 Qing-class submarines are also equipped with the Stirling engine, the source said. The four Lada-class submarines will also be equipped with advanced electronic systems developed in China and the fire-control system will also be modified to launch Chinese anti-air and anti-ship missiles.

J-31 stealth fighter designed for export, says PLA admiral
The J-31, China's second prototype fifth-generation stealth fighter, designed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, will be produced for the export market instead of for China's air force and navy, according to Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong of the PLA Navy in a People's Daily report.
While the Washington-based Strategy Page said the J-31 has the potential to become a future carrier-based stealth fighter for the PLA Navy, Zhang said it is unlikely the plane will serve aboard Chinese aircraft carriers. Unlike the J-20 designed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, the J-31 was never a development program intended for the Chinese military, Zhang said.
Like the FC-1/JF-17 Xiaolong or Thunder multirole fighter designed jointly by China and Pakistan, the J-31 will be most likely be a model intended for export to China's allies and strategic partners, which may include countries like North Korea and Iran. Chinese fighters are a much cheaper alternative to US fighters for developing countries, even those which are able to buy military hardware from the United States.
A model of the J-31 was first displayed at the Zhuhai Air Show in Guangdong province last November, where it was described as a fighter to open China's overseas market. It was called the "Advanced Fighter Concept," according to the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). The model was displayed again at the opening of the Beijing international Aviation Exposition on Sept. 25, under the new name of "China Concept Fighter." Sources from AVIC told People's Daily however that the "China Concept Fighter" is not the J-31.

China Testing New Space Weapons China conducts satellite capture in space as part of Star Wars military program
China last week conducted a test of a maneuvering satellite that captured another satellite in space during what Pentagon officials say was a significant step forward for Beijing’s space warfare program.
The satellite capture took place last week and involved one of three small satellites fitted with a mechanical arm that were launched July 20 as part of a covert anti-satellite weapons development program, said U.S. officials familiar with reports of the test.
One official described the satellite-grabbing spacecraft as a “mobile satellite launch vehicle.”
A Pentagon spokeswoman declined to comment on the specifics of the test. But Cynthia O. Smith, the spokeswoman, confirmed that the satellites, designated Payloads A, B, and C, have maneuvered in space since their launch.
“The United States Strategic Command’s Joint Functional Combatant Command for Space (JFCC-Space), consistent with its routine operations to maintain track of objects in space, has monitored these satellites since their launch and has noticed the relative motions of these satellites amongst each other and with respect to other space objects,” she said.
The Pentagon’s website Space-Track.org does not report on missions or functions of the hundreds of space objects it tracks, and Smith referred further questions to the Chinese government.
A Chinese Embassy spokesman did not return emails seeking comment on the ASAT test.
The satellites involved in the space warfare development program were identified by the Chinese as “scientific experimentation satellites,” according to a notice published July 24 in the online journal Space News.
They were identified as Chuangxin-3 (Innovation-3), Shiyan-7 (Experiment-7), and Shijian-15 (Practice-15). The spacecraft with the robotic mechanical arm that conducted the satellite capture experiment has not been authoritatively identified from among the three orbiters. However, space analysts suspect it is Shiyan-7.
Space News is published by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. (CASC), which builds strategic missiles and space launchers, and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), China’s largest missile manufacturer.
The notice stated that the three satellites were launched atop a Long March-4C rocket on July 20 from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north central China.
“These three satellites are to be used for the observation of space debris and conducting scientific experiments in space maintenance techniques like space arm operations,” the statement said.
Space Track continues to identify the satellites as by their payload designations, rather than using the Chinese names.
Space analyst Bob Christy, who writes the blog Zarya.info that first disclosed the three satellites, said no public information has indicated the three satellites involved in earlier close maneuvers engaged in a significant orbit change since activities in August.
“There have certainly been no more approaches between them, and Payload A has shown no sign of maneuvering in the whole of its time in space,” he said in an email.
Since no other satellites are in the same orbit as the three satellites and another satellite known as Shijian-7, “if the capture was last week, it didn’t involve any of these working together,” he said.
Christy said that leaves the possibility that Shijian-7 was captured by Payload C during a close flyby around Aug. 17.
“My actual calculations showed them getting closer than 500 meters but given the inherent error margins of the Space Track data, I stuck with a few hundred meters,” he said.
Another possibility is that the test involved a detachable part of one satellite and its release into a separate orbit, and the subsequent recapturing of the component using the extension arm, Christy said.
“If the separation distance was small and the period of separated flight was short, then U.S. sensors are unlikely to have detected an extra object in orbit,” he said.
A third possibility is that the test involved completely different satellites that were not observed by non-government space trackers.
Christy’s analysis of the August activities revealed that the satellites conducted several experiments.
Since August, Payload C and Shijian-7 showed slight variations in orbit that are likely the result of thruster operation for position control, Christy stated in a recent blog post.
In August, Payload B, a non-maneuvering satellite, was positioned about 620 miles behind Payload C, a spacecraft that specialists say could be the craft with the manipulator arm, and Payload C gradually slowed to until is passed very close to the other satellite.
The robotic satellite may be part of efforts to develop China’s large space station set to be deployed around 2020.
However, Pentagon officials believe the small satellite activity is more closely associated with China’s secret ASAT program.
Little is known about the Chinese space warfare program, which is among the Chinese military’s most closely guarded secrets.
China conducted a direct ascent ASAT missile test in January 2007 that destroyed a Chinese weather satellite and created tens of thousands orbiting debris pieces that threaten both manned and unmanned spacecraft.
Chinese officials have told U.S. counterparts that the 2007 test was a one-time event and so far have not conducted further debris-causing satellite attack tests.
A U.S. official told the Free Beacon in August that the launch of the three satellites was part of Beijing’s covert anti-satellite warfare program.
The official said the craft with the robotic arm was viewed as the most threatening because U.S. satellites, vital strategic assets used by both the American military and civilian infrastructure, are vulnerable to kinetic or electronic disruption in space.
The official said the satellites are part of China’s “Star Wars” space weapon program that has been largely ignored by the Obama administration over concerns that pressing China to explain its space weapons would upset U.S.-China relations.
The ASAT program is a “real concern for U.S. national defense,” the official said.
Until the satellite capture, the mission of the spacecraft with the mechanical arm was unknown. It was thought that it could used to grab, gouge, or alter the orbits of other satellites.
The craft also could be used for maintenance and repair.
Rick Fisher, a Chinese military affairs specialist, said the robot-arm satellite that he believes is the Shiyan-7 is part of China’s dual-use space program that includes satellites for military close-surveillance and attack missions. Civilian applications include development of space manipulator arm technology.
“As an ASAT, a future version of the SY-7 could be used to take close-up images of U.S. satellites, to remove systems from those satellites and return them to China, to directly damage U.S. satellites or to plant ‘mines’ on those satellites or close nearby,” said Fisher, with the International Assessment and Strategy Center.
“An SY-7-like ASAT gives China the option to attack enemy satellites without creating a large cloud of debris that may also damage other Chinese satellites.”
Fisher said China recently hosted a major space conference and is seeking to position itself as a space “superpower” as a means to increase cooperation and technology acquisition from other countries.
At the conference, “Chinese officials made a deliberate appeal to Canada, which developed and built the manipulator arm used on the International Space Station and U.S. Space Shuttles,” Fisher said.
However, Fisher said China made every effort to conceal the People’s Liberation Army’s role in the space program and would probably deny any military role in the developing mechanical arm technology for offensive space operations.
“The ‘Canadarm’ [manipulator arm] was developed in Canada with Canadian funding and four were purchased by NASA for the U.S. Space Shuttle program,” he said.
China conducted a test launch of a new high-Earth orbit anti-satellite missile called the DN-2 in March, according to U.S. officials.

[quote]Images have surfaced on the Chinese Internet of what seems to be an actual AH-64D Apache or a real-size copy of the world’s most famous attack chopper.
The helicopter, on a truck, seems to be in the process of being moved even if it is at least strange that it is is not hidden below a protective covering, as happened for other mysterious choppers spotted on the move in China.
It’s not easy to guess how Beijing put their hands on the helicopter. It could be one of the U.S. Army Apaches downed or crash landed in Iraq, that was later fixed and exported in China.
A famous episode is the one of the AH-64 shot down intact during the 2003 attack on Karbala, during which the two US pilots were captured and shown on television along with the helicopter: still, Pentagon later stated the Apache had been destroyed with an airstrike the day following the capture. Or, it may be a perfect copy of the Boeing AH-64: China has already shown its ability to create clones of the American most advanced weapons systems.

PLA Navy prepares countermeasures against US, Japanese submarines
A Gaoxin-6 anti-submarine aircraft, modified from the Y-8 transport plane
Facing the challenge of US and Japanese submarines operating within disputed territorial waters, the People's Liberation Army is preparing for a three-dimensional anti-submarine system consisted of aircraft, surface combat vessels and submarines, according to the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po. Meanwhile, the Tokyo-based Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force plans to increase the number of its submarines from 16 to 22 by 2021. Using Soryu-class diesel-electric submarines as an example, the paper stated that the size of the new Japanese submarines will become larger. As the first class of Japanese submarines to be equipped with air-independent propulsion system, the Soryu-class diesel-electric submarine can operate under water for nearly two weeks. The Soryu-class is also much more powerful than its predecessors, the Harushio and Narushio-class submarines, as it is equipped with Type 89 torpedoes and UGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Even though Japan is not permitted under its constitution to have its own nuclear-powered submarine, conventional submarines like the Soryu-class are already a dangerous threat to China's maritime communication lines, the paper said, adding that Japanese submarines have a longer patrol range and more powerful weapons systems. In addition, the United States is deploying more submarines to the Asia-Pacific region. At the US military base in Yokosuka, there are between five and six submarines under the command of the Seventh Fleet. Next year, the US will deploy four more nuclear-powered submarines to Guam, while strategic targets in China are in range of the 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles equipped by a single Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine. To counter Chinese submarines in a potential conflict, Japan recently purchased 70 P-1 jet planes from Kawasaki Heavy Industries to replace its US-built P-3C jet. The delivery of the first two P-1 aircraft to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force took place on Mar. 26. In addition to fixed-wing aircraft, the country's new helicopter carrier, the Izumo, is able to carry 14 SH-60K anti-submarine helicopters into battle. Ships of the World, a Japanese military magazine, indicated that the Self-Defense Force currently has 44 destroyers and nine frigates to form the nation's surface combat fleet against the PLA Navy. While some of those destroyers are used in air defense operations, more of them are designated to combat Chinese submarines. Facing this new challenge, the PLA Navy must adopt new tactics to defend its submarines against a potential joint anti-submarine operation launched by the US and Japan. Cheng Chi-wen, chief editor of the Taipei-based Asia-Pacific Defense, said that what the PLA Navy needs most is fixed-wing aircraft for anti-submarine operations. Currently, China can only rely on its Y-8 transport aircraft for such a mission as it is capable of carrying torpedoes, depth charges and mines. Shi Hong, a Chinese military analyst, said China needs more fixed-wing aircraft because the patrol range for helicopters is too short. He added that several Y-8 transport aircraft have been modified into Gaoxin-6 anti-submarine aircraft. With more advanced systems and greater range, the PLA Navy Air Force can conduct anti-submarine operations as far as the Second Island Chain — a series of island groups that runs north to south from the Japanese archipelago to the Bonin and Marshall islands. In addition to maritime patrol aircraft, anti-submarine helicopters, surface combat vessels and submarines, an Underwater Sound Surveillance System will be a crucial weapon for the PLA Navy to monitor the movements of American and Japanese submarines, Shi said. However, China does not yet have such a sophisticated surveillance system, he added.
PLA needs US$20bn to create its own carrier battle group
The Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier
The state-run China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation will have to spend at least US$20 billion to design and develop vessels for the PLA Navy's first carrier battle group, according to the Toyko-based Yomiuri Shimbun. With the task of building 80% of the PLA Navy's ships, CSIC has already begun to raise funds through the stock market. However, the company has only managed to raise under US$8.5 billion as its strong ties to China's military development limits the type of investors allowed to participate. Most of the funds collected so far are from other state-run businesses, but the CSIC is considering plans to sell its stock to the general public as well. While more money can be raised in the open market, it is also a way to call on the public to support their country's military efforts, insiders said. The CSIC is also looking to raise funds to take over all major military projects assigned to affiliated company Dalian Shipbuilding Industry since the latter is the only company with experience of working on a carrier, having refitted the Liaoning, the country's first aircraft carrier, which was purchased from Ukraine. According to reports, China will build at least three aircraft carriers in the future, and the company plans to build one or more carriers over the next five to 10 years Since aircraft carriers alone cannot make China a new maritime power, the CSIC will also build more destroyers, frigates and landing carriers which are necessary for the PLA Navy to form its first carrier battle group with the Liaoning as its flagship. This plan was confirmed by the official website of the PLA Navy on Sept. 24, the paper said. At an event to celebrate the 64th anniversary of the PLA Navy this April, Duan Zhaoxian, vice chief of staff, stated that the position of China's carrier formation or carrier battle group will not surpass the country's three major fleets — the North, East and South Sea fleets.

Shanghai's Jiangnan shipyard has been assigned to construct a modified version of Type 071 amphibious transport docks in preparation for a potential amphibious warfare over the disputed Diaoyutai (Senkaku) islands with Japan, reports the Canada-based Kanwa Defense Review.
Current PLA Navy amphibious assault ships are only able to carry four Type 726 Yuyi-class air-cushioned landing craft, according to the report. The modified version will increase the potential load to six. This will gradually increase the PLA Navy's force projection capabilities.
The displacement of the upgraded ship will be more than 30,000 tons, compared to the 28,000 tons of the original.
Meanwhile, Ukraine had agreeded to provide blueprints of their Zubr-class air-cushioned landing craft to China. With this blueprint, China will be able to design new landing craft to replace the domestically-built Type 726.
