Turkey to order first two F-35 fighter jets
Turkey has decided to order two F-35 fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin Corp, the government said on May 6.
It will be the first order of Turkey’s pre-announced plan to purchase 100 F-35 jets for $16 billion, which had been expected to begin next year.
The statement released after Defense Industry Executive Committee Meeting, which convened under leadership of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said Turkey’s commitment to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program “continues strong as ever.”
“In this context, Turkey continues her forecast of the acquisition of 100 F-35A aircraft as planned and declared previously.”
Lockheed Martin, which has a market capitalization of more than $52 billion, welcomed the news. “This decision confirms the value of acquiring a 5th Generation fighter capability and is testimony to the Turkish Government’s confidence in the program,” it said in a statement.
The program, the Pentagon’s most expensive arms development project, is about 70 percent over budget and years behind schedule, having been plagued by technical problems.
Skeptics say it still faces big challenges, including completing the software needed to integrate weapons on the jet.

Turkey increases military spending
The second of four AWACS [Airborne Warning and Control System] early warning airplanes that we ordered 10 years ago have arrived. The third will be delivered later this year. Foreigners call these planes early warning craft, but we named it "Peace Eagle." These planes, for which we are paying $1.5 billion, will be in the air 24 hours and be refueled in flight. They will report to Ankara if even a bird flies over our borders. We heard from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the long-stalled general utility helicopter project was finally signed. We will pay $3.5 billion for the first batch of 109 US-made Sikorsky helicopters.
The earlier signed project for T-129 AgustaWestland attack helicopters has a bill for $3 billion. We are also buying Seahawk naval helicopters for $557 million.
The other the day the first “Koca Yusuf” giant transport plane, which foreigners call the Hercules A400M, arrived. Turkey is the second country after France to have one of those planes. We ordered 10 of them for 1.3 billion euros [$1.79 billion].
In a meeting a couple of days ago chaired by the prime minister, the decision was made for F-35 new-generation fighters. We already paid $175 million to join the project. As the planes are produced, we are committed to buy a hundred of them at $160 million each. This year we will get two of them.
The long-range air defense system contract we signed with the Chinese will cost $4 billion. If for any reason we change our minds about the Chinese, Americans are waiting in line.
These were all air assets. It is no less on the ground and the sea. We will pay $500 million to our national tank project, $687 million toward updating our M60 tanks, and $625 million for a minesweeper. A patrol boat will cost an additional 407 million euros [$562 million], and an amphibious vessel project 391 million euros [$540 million].
According to a research by Ibrahim Ekinci published in Dunya, the first two homemade warships were built at Golcuk naval yards. Istanbul Shipyards are manufacturing two more. Furthermore, the decision was made to order four more. Bids for two logistical support ships are under review. A landing platform dock vessel will be built by Metin Kalkavan’s shipyards. The biggest naval project is TF2000. They are frigates that will provide air defense against attacks by ships, airplanes and other aerial vehicles. And finally, in the support group, we have a project for a training ship with sails.
Excuse me. Buy … buy … buy. There must be a reason for all this haste. Who are we preparing to fight? Who is going to pay for all these toys we are buying, and how?

Heron crashes in southern Turkey
An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) crashed in southern Turkey on Friday during a test flight.
The Heron crashed in a garden in Gaziantep's Sarıkoç village in Nizip district, but no one was injured during the crash. Villagers panicked when they witnessed a large flying object crashed and its parts scattered around.
Gendarmerie came to the area of the crash and collected the parts of the Heron.
Village Head Hasan Naim said they initially could not identify the flying object and that it was flying very low. He said while "we were watching, we saw that it fell and we immediately informed the gendarmerie."

U.S. selling torpedoes to Turkey
A Foreign Military Sales deal is in the works for the purchase of torpedoes by Turkey.
WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) --The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of the possible sale of 48 torpedoes to Turkey under the Foreign Military Sales program.
Turkey will use the MK 48 Mod 6 Advanced Technology All-Up-Round Warshot Torpedoes on its new CERBE Class of submarines.
"The proposed sale will improve Turkey's capability for self- defense, modernization, regional security, and interoperability with U.S. and other NATO members," the agency said.
The weapons will be sold as part of a package worth about $170 million. Included in the deal are containers, fleet exercise sections, exercise fuel tanks, surface recovery cage and tools, exercise hardware, maintenance facility upgrades, support and test equipment, and spare and repair parts.
Training equipment and logistics support services are also part of the deal.
The principal contractor will be Raytheon Company Integrated Defense Systems, the agency said.
Sale of the torpedoes needs Congressional approval. The U.S. State Department has already approved.

First Steel Is Cut For Turkish TCG Bayraktar
Suddenly and silently the construction of the first of the two new LST class ships has started. The first steel was cut on 14 May 2014 at ADİK Shipyard. The first ship will be called as TCG Bayraktar; the name proves that the old TCG Bayraktar, an old LST-511 class landing ship is out of commission. The contract for the construction of two new LST class landing ships was signed between ADIK shipyard and SSM in 16 June 2011. It took almost two years for the shipyard to find the 370 million Euro credit to cover the project as required by the contract. The shipyard expect to hand the ship to Turkish Navy in 34 months on 17 February 2017.

Turkey scrambles fighter jets to intercept Iranian aircraft
Turkey scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to intercept an Iranian military plane that briefly crossed into Turkish airspace over the eastern province of Iğdır, bordering Iran, the military said on Sunday.
The Iranian reconnaissance plane violated Turkey's airspace on Saturday for 20 seconds and left the area after the military dispatched F-16s to intercept it, according to a written statement from the General Staff.
The statement also said four F-16s conducted patrols on the Turkey-Syria border on Saturday.
Tensions between Turkish and Syrian forces have occasionally flared up since the start of the civil war in the country. When Syria shot down a Turkish jet in June 2012, Turkey changed its rules of engagement and warned that it would strike Syrian warplanes that approached the Turkish border. Turkey shot down a Syrian jet in late March after it violated Turkish airspace on the Turkish-Syrian border near Yayladağı, a district in southern Hatay.
Last month, two jet fighters were scrambled to intercept a Syrian military helicopter approaching the border of Hatay province. The military said in a statement that a Syrian MI-8 helicopter turned back 0.9 nautical miles from the Turkish-Syrian border as Turkish F-16 fighters approached.
Under Turkey's new rules of engagement, any Syrian military unit approaching the border is considered a threat.
