MOSCOU, 16 juin - RIA Novosti

MOSCOU, 16 juin - RIA Novosti

Russia defense industry unveils new UMZ-K multipurpose mine-laying vehicle at Army-2015.
During the International Military-Technical Forum ARMY-2015, which took place near Moscow from 16 to 19 June 2015, Russian defense industry has unveiled new multipurpose mine-laying vehicle, the UMZ-K. The vehicle is designed to remotely scatter anti-personnel, anti-paratrooper and anti-tank clustered mines over terrain.

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 Russie10

Named the UMZ-K, it differs from its predecessor, the UMZ layer, first of all in its wheeled chassis. Unlike the UMZ, which is mounted atop a ZIL-131B cargo truck chassis, the new system is based on that of a KamAZ-63501.

The KamAZ-63501 heavy utility truck is a member of the Mustang family and one of the largest trucks in the KamAZ range. It is entirely conventional in design, a renewed version of the previous 8x8 heavy utility truck with an increased payload capacity of 15,000 kg.

The platform of the truck sits six multiple payload rotary launchers with fixed elevation mechanisms. In battle order the launchers are set upwards. The tilt angle is 50 degrees, while its horizontal coverage is 90 degrees.

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 Russie11

he basic mine load is 180 clusters with antipersonnel (PFM, POM), anti-paratrooper (PDM) or antitank mines (PTM).

The maximum length of the minefield being laid with the use of one basic mine load: antipersonnel mines (PFM) – 3,200 meters; antipersonnel mines (POM) – 5,000 meters; antitank mines (PTM) – 600 meters.

The minefields it creates are 15 meters deep and 240 meters wide. Its mine-laying speed is up to 40 km per hour. The operating crew consists of two people.

Russia to launch production of naval Pantsyr-M

Nikolai Novichkov, St Petersburg - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
05 July 2015

The Russian Instrument Design Bureau (KBP) has launched batch production of the Pantsyr-M (Pantsir-M) naval anti-air gun-missile (AAGM) system, according to Alexander Zhukov, chief engineer of KBP's naval air defence unit.

"Pantsyr-M's batch production has already started," Zhukov said. However he didn't state which vessels will receive the new AAGM. A mock-up of the Pantsyr-M was demonstrated for the first time during the International Maritime Defence Show (IMDS) in St Petersburg from 1-5 June.

The system is capable of engaging four targets at once with missiles, before its anti-aircraft guns automatically target any that are missed. Standard ammunition loadout would include 32 missiles in a storage and reload system below the ship's deck.

The Pantsyr-M can fire either the 57E6E surface-to-air missile (used in the land-based Pantsyr-S) or with the prospective Hermes-K missile, which has a range of 100 km. When using the latter the combat module can receive information sent by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) against land targets.

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 Russie12

Dmitry Konoplev, executive director of KBP has previously said that the Russia's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has a keen interest in navalised Pantsyrs. "The decision to upgrade several destroyers and major combat ships with naval Pantsyr has been taken, and such works are being fulfilled now," said Konoplev.

Pantsyr-M is intended to replace the Kortik/Kashtan CADS-N-1 naval AAGM. Its export modification, dubbed Pantsyr-ME, is being pushed at the international arms markets.

2 Pilots Killed in Russian Military Jet Crash
Agence France-Presse 3:28 p.m. EDT July 6, 2015

MOSCOW — Two pilots of a Russian military aircraft were killed Monday when their jet crashed during a training mission in the far east of the country, the defence ministry said, the latest in a string of accidents involving military planes.

"The aircraft suffered a crash during take-off in a planned training flight near the Khurba aerodrome. The two pilots were killed," the ministry said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies.

The wreckage of the Sukhoi Su-24 jet created a 20-meter-wide crater, state-owned RIA Novosti news agency reported, but no casualties or property damage were recorded.

The defence ministry dispatched an investigation team to the scene to probe the causes of the plane's demise, TASS reported.

Officials did not offer any explanations for the crash and could not be reached for further comment on the incident.

The commander of the Russian Air Force declared a moratorium on flights of Sukhoi fighter jets until the reasons behind the latest crash were uncovered, Russian media reported.

The incident is Russia's fifth military plane accident in the last month and the second crash in the last few days, raising questions about the safety of Russian military aircraft.

On Friday, the pilot of a Mikoyan MiG-29 jet fighter that crashed in the Krasnodar region managed to eject himself from the cockpit. A faulty engine in thought to have caused the incident.

The Sukhoi Su-24 dates to the Soviet era but is still used by the Russian air force.

The last deadly crash involving a Sukhoi Su-24 fighter jet occurred in February on the outskirts of the southern Russian city of Volgograd, TASS reported.

Russie, les MiG-29 a nouveau au sol !

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 1104

Arms, Army, Military, Planes, Russia, SciTech, Security, Vehicles Russian air defense is getting ready to deploy S-350 Vityaz mobile SAMs to replace outgoing versions of S-300 anti-aircraft systems. The core of the new system features missiles with state-of-the-art active radar-homing warheads.

Everything is ready for the production of Russia’s brand-new medium to short range mobile S-350 Vityaz anti-aircraft missile complex. The system will replace S-300ps SAMs, which are armed with outdated V55R missiles due for decommissioning by the end of the year.

“The next generation S-350 systems will be operational in the nearest possible future,” General-Major Sergey Babakov, the Commander of Russia’s anti-aircraft missile troops, told journalists in early July. “Deployment is expected to comply with the schedule, no failures on delivery are expected,” the general added.

The S-350 Vityaz system consists of a launcher vehicle, all-aspect radar for scanning airspace and a command vehicle. The maximum number of launchers operating with one radar and command center is classified, as well as the maximum quantity of simultaneously tracked targets.

The S-350 Vityaz is armed with two types of missiles. One is medium range also employed by anti-aircraft S-400 Triumph systems. The other interceptor missile is a brand-new modern projectile with an active homing head, which means it has its own radar station.

The technical characteristics of this new missile “outperform missiles of previous generation systems,” Colonel Igor Klimov, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, told journalists.

MORE IMAGES AT IGOR KOROTCHENKO'S BLOG

The new missile is smaller, lighter and more maneuverable, General Babakov said last weekend in an interview with Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine. “Though it is smaller, its characteristics are better than that of S-300ps. It is agile, does better at ultra-low and maximum heights and has longer range,” the general said.

“I believe the new system is going to be die-hard,” Babakov said in an interview with the Russian News Service radio station.

The S-350 Vityaz was unveiled to the public at the MAKS-2013 International Aviation and Space Show.

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 Vityaz-3
S-350 Vityaz radar (Image from Igor Korotchenko's Military Diary http://i-korotchenko.livejournal.com)

Initially, the complex was expected to enter production in 2014, but the final tests of the new missile took more time than was expected.

The S-400 Triumph and S-350 Vityaz complexes are replacing those of the outdated S-300 family systems.

The principal difference between S-350 Vityaz and S-300 is the number of missiles ready for use: the S-350 launcher vehicle carries 12 missiles, whereas the S-300 has just four. This is due to modern missiles being more powerful, and so missiles become either smaller or achieve longer ranges with the same size.

Russia Reduces Procurement of Ivan Gren Class Landing Ship to Focus on Mistral Analog Lavina

According to Moscow-based online newspaper Lenta, the Russian Navy is about to reduce the procurement of project 11711 Ivan Gren class large amphibious assault ship under the state program. The Russian Navy was originally planning to procure six vessels in this class but procurement will actually stop after the Peter Morgunov (Pyotr Morgunov), the second unit which keel has just been laid. Russia will instead focus on the "Avalanche" project, a Russian analog to the Mistral class.

They have a displacement of 5,000 tonnes. These amphibious vessels can support beach landing of up to 300 marines, 40 armored personnel carriers or 13 tanks and carry the Kamov Ka-29 type helicopter on the deck. The landing ships are armed with a 76-mm naval gun, two 30-mm AK-630 antiaircraft mounts and multiple artillery rocket systems.

"The Pyotr Morgunov large landing ship is planned to be transferred to the Navy in 2018, after the completion of the vessel building and all stages of testing. The project’s lead ship - the Ivan Gren is in the final stage of construction and will be delivered to the Navy after trials at the end 2015," head of Navy’s shipbuilding department Vladimir Tryapichnikov told reporters.

The Ivan Gren class can accomodate two helicopters and is fitted with a 76mm caliber cannon, two AK-630 antiaircraft guns, and multiple launch rocket systems. The ship displacemes 5,000 tons.

The Russian Navy will receive by 2020 the first new-generation landing ship that will be many times heavier than the Ivan Gren class vessels and will be able to carry several helicopters, Tryapichnikov told reporters earlier on Thursday.

"The construction of new-generation large landing ships will be launched within the next five years, and these ships will many times surpass in displacement the Ivan Gren and Pyotr Morgunov large landing ships, have higher landing force compatibility and will be able to carry not one, but several helicopters," Tryapichnikov said.

According to him, the first ship of this class is to be built by 2020. "It will be a new project for the ‘large landing ship’ class," he said.

During the ARMY-2015 defense exhibiton, it was made public that this new project was called "Avalanche": Krylov State Research Center developed the Avalanche project of amphibious assault ship as a replacement for the cancelation for the Mistral class deal with France. Russian Navy to Test a New Trimaran Vessel Concept Similar to LCS by Zelenodolsk Design Bureau

Russia's "Zelenodolsk Design Bureau" (ZPKB) developped a trimaran vessel concept that Russian Navy is ready to test as "proof of concept" in a scale model. The concept is based on a civilian vessel designed by ZPKB, the "RUSICH-2.2".

This military concept is being considered as a possible patrol vessel by the Russian Navy, and for some potential foreign customers. For this reason, in April this year, Russian MoD awarded a contract for proof of concept: The contract and allocated funds are for "Design, construction and full-scale testing of a high-speed self-propelled scale model of trimaran vessel with outriggers identified as SAR by ZPKB" .

The vessel is expect to displace just 1,500 tons with a top speed of 35 knots.

Based on the various illustration available, it seems like this "Russian LCS" Trimaran could be fitted with:
A-192 130-mm main gun
UKSK VLS cells and/or Redut VLS cells
Paket-NK torpedoes
AK-630M-2 "Duet" CIWS
PK-10 decoy launchers

Russian Tu-95 Bear Strategic Bomber Crashes in Khabarovsk Region

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 1019031126

A Russian Tu-95 Bear strategic bomber has crashed in the Siberian region approximately 50 miles from the city of Khabarovsk, the Russian Defense Minister said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The aircraft was fulfilling training exercises and was unarmed. A search for the seven crewmembers has begun.

“At 9:50 a.m. Moscow time [06:50 GMT] on July 14, 2015, a Tu-95 crashed during a planned training flight 80 kilometers from Khabarovsk. The flight was conducted without weapons,” the Defense Ministry said
The ministry said the plane came down in an uninhabited area, and there was no damage to structures on the ground, adding that the crew were able to parachute out of the stricken aircraft before impact.

"According to preliminary data, after the aircraft commander reported an emergency situation [aboard the plane] the flight commander ordered the crew to leave the aircraft on parachutes," the ministry said.

"Pilots aboard another plane flying in that area reported seeing open parachutes of the Tu-95 crew," the statement continued.

The ministry said in the statement the crash had probably been caused by a malfunction, although other causes were not ruled out.

The Tupolev Tu-95 (NATO reporting name Bear) is a four-engine turboprop-powered strategic bomber and missile platform in service with the Russian Air Force since 1957.

The Russian Air Force has a string of six mishaps involving its warplanes since June.

Russia to develop a new self-propelled coastal defense gun based on 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV howitzer.

Russia is developing a new self-propelled coastal defense gun, based on the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV system, Burevestnik Design Bureau chief, Georgy Zakamennykh, announced on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. The Russian naval command planned to outline the technical characteristics of the new system within the next two months.

We have always favored unification because it is cheaper… The knowhow obtained during the design of the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV gun can come in very handy in the development of the new coastal defense artillery systems,” Zakamennykh told RIA Novosti news agency.

Russia’s naval commander, Admiral Viktor Chirkov earlier announced a planned switch to coastal defense artillery systems of the type used by the ground forces. The new systems will be an upgrade of the existing ones and adjusted for use by the Russian Navy, the Admiral added.

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV self-propelled howitzer was presented for the first time to the public in April 2015 during rehearsals for the Moscow Victory Day parade.

The 2S35 can fire fully autonomously without any crew in the turret. The first batch of 12 2S35 152mm self-propelled howitzers was delivered to the armed forces in March 2015.

According to Russian military engineers, the new 2S35 can used high-explosive long-range precision-guided munitions with a maximum range of 70 km and high level of accuracy.

Standard equipment of the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV includes NBC protection system, night vision, computerized fire control and screens for each members of the crew to control firing operations.

Currently, Russian armed forces uses the Bereg, a 130mm self-propelled coastal defense gun system. A turret with a 130mm gun is mounted on an 8x8 truck chassis MAZ-543M .

The Bereg 130mm is designed to engage surface ships during anti-amphibious fleet operations. The vehicle enters in service with the Russian armed forces in 2003. The gun is fitted with a semi-automatic loading system which able the Bereg to fire 10 rounds per minute.

The Bereg 130mm has a maximum firing range of 22 km and carries a total of 40 rounds.

Russia works for the development of a laser tank able to destroy optical-electronic equipment.

Russian defense industry works for the development of a new laser tank able of burning out all enemy optics within direct line of sight in fractions of a second. By the mid-1970s, Russia has started the development of the 1K17 "Compression".

he 1K17 Compression is a self-propelled laser vehicle using a 2S19 Msta-S chassis with a battery of laser projectors mounted in the turret. It was developed by the Soviet Union in order to disable the optical-electronic equipment of enemy missiles, ground and aerial vehicles.

The 1K17 used an intense laser beam to disable the optical-electronic equipment of the enemy vehicles. This was created by focusing light through 30 kg of artificial rubies which made the whole system very expensive to produce. The optics that produced the laser were placed at the end of a silver coated spiral which helped amplify the beam and increase convergence. The energy to power the laser was provided by a generator and an auxiliary battery system. The lenses themselves were able to operate in different environments by moving metal caps closer to protect the lens. It was also equipped with a 12.7mm NSV machine gun to defend itself against attacks by infantry and air.

By the mid-1970s, the Soviet Union was eagerly pursuing laser weapons on land, at sea, in the air and in outer space as a useful counter to US and Western European optics, missiles, spy satellites and other high-tech systems.

In 1982, it built the first full-size prototype of an energy weapon for a ground vehicle and installed in on a tracked chassis.

In 1992, the first prototypes rolled out of the factory, but the economic chaos in the wake of the Soviet collapse forced the government to cancel the program.

In December 2014, the US Navy announced that it had deployed and fired a laser weapon this fall aboard a warship in the Persian Gulf. During a series of test shots, the laser hit and destroyed targets mounted atop a small boat, blasted a six-foot drone from the sky, and destroyed other moving targets.

The American Company Boeing, has also developed a laser weapon mounted on a truck, the HEL TD (High Energy Laser Technology Demonstrator). The truck-mounted system is designed to provide increased ability to counter rockets, artillery, mortars and threats from unmanned aircraft.

Russia Commits to Tupolev TU-160 Bomber

Confirmation of TU-160 production beyond 2023 implies shift away from PAK-DA project

Russian military policy is shifting from hurried development of the entirely new subsonic Tupolev PAK-DA bomber to relaunching production of the 1980s vintage supersonic Tupolev TU-160 bomber.

A short time ago, following a recommendation by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, President Putin ordered a new production run of 60 new Tupolev TU-160 bombers.

Now Russian Deputy Defence Minister Yuri Borisov says Russia will launch serial production of yet another more developed version of the TU-160 (to be called the TU-160M2) in 2023.

Borisov confirmed that production of the Tupolev PAK-DA would be shifted back in light of the decision to continue with production of the TU-160.

This decision makes total sense.

The military were never that keen on the PAK-DA. Deputy Prime Minister Rogozin Tweeted when it was first proposed that it wasn’t needed and would have trouble penetrating modern air defences.

Heavy lobbying from the aerospace industry caused Putin to overrule him.

At that time no-one proposed re-starting production of the TU-160 but the logic of doing so is compelling.

The TU-160 is by common consent the most successful supersonic bomber to enter service anywhere in the world. It makes far more sense to restart its production than to reinvent the wheel, so-to-speak, by taking on the immense cost and design risk of developing an entirely new bomber.

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 Russie13

Bringing the TU-160 back into production provides an immediate boost to the air force’s long range bomber force, provides work to the military industries and by giving, Tupolev more time to complete work on the PAK-DA, reduces its development costs and design risks.

Russia Orders 'Submarine-Killer' Be-200 Amphibious Aircraft For Production By 2020, Official Says

Armée Russe / Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - Page 33 Be-200

The Russian navy plans to purchase a “submarine-killer” version of its Be-200 amphibious aircraft by 2020, an unnamed official said Sunday. President Vladimir Putin has made the modernization of Russia’s military aircraft a priority as part of a larger plan to revamp the armed forces by the end of the decade.

The Be-200 aircraft’s anti-submarine version will help to replace the Russian navy’s existing fleet of Be-12 amphibious planes, a decades-old model that officials now consider obsolete, the source told Russian agency Sputnik International News. Current versions of the Be-200 are used to contain fires or transport personnel, with a capacity of as many as 72 passengers, Sputnik reports.

“The navy’s command has decided that it’s necessary to purchase an anti-submarine configuration of the Be-200 amphibious aircraft by 2020 to search for, detect and destroy [enemy] submarines,” an anonymous navy official told Russian news agency RIA Novosti, as quoted by Sputnik.

The Kremlin’s plans to purchase six Be-200 planes were first revealed in 2013, but it was unclear if those planes would be outfitted as anti-submarine aircraft. The naval official did not say what technological innovations would distinguish the Be-200 as a “submarine-killer.” The Be-200 has the capability to touch down on water or on land.

Earlier this month, Russian Helicopters, a defense-manufacturing firm, announced plans to renew production of the Mi-14 military helicopter. The aircraft, also touted as amphibious, was used in military service prior to the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. Russia outfitted the helicopter’s old version with bombs capable of destroying submarines.

Putin vowed in March the Kremlin would spend more than 21 trillion rubles, or about $340 billion, to modernize the military by 2020. In early July, Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov placed the country’s planned military expenditure at approximately $600 billion. A portion of that money will be used to upgrade the air force, which will receive 126 new aircraft by the end of the year, Russian news agency Tass reported.
