Le prochain salon Eurosatory continue de se remplir. Dédié à l'équipement aéro-terrestre, le salon se tiendra au parc des expositions du 13 au 17 juin. Pour l'instant près de 900 industriels se sont inscrits pour exposer. Il reste encore 4 mois au Coges pour faire le plein. L'édition 2014 avait établi un record avec plus 1500 exposants. A noter que malgré la période de ramadan qui tombe cette année au même moment, les principaux industriels du Golfe devraient être néanmoins présents. Pour cette édition 2016, les grands industriels français du secteur (Nexter, RTD, Thales, Sagem...) seront présents. A noter cependant que le groupe Airbus a réduit sa présence. Seule la branche Airbus Helicopters disposera d'un stand, de taille réduite comparée aux années précédentes. Une présence révélatrice de l'importance de l'activité défense du groupe européen.

Pour la première année, le salon des drones UGS, qui se déroulait à Bordeaux, va être organisé en même temps qu'Eurosatory. Bien qu’initialement, il devait être organisé de manière séparé, il sera finalement complètement intégré à Eurosatory. Les années impaires (soit celles où il n'y a pas d'Eurosatory), un symposium sera organisé à Bordeaux.

Citation :: Y a quoi sur le stand Défense ?

Un peu conforme aux descriptifs faits ici et sur mon twitter il y a quelques semaines, le stand Défense à Eurosatory affiche les nouveautés de saison, comme la maquette 1/1 du Griffon, ce qui fait prendre la mesure de ce qui changera -bientôt mais pas rapidement- dans l'armée de terre. Un véhicule haut sur roues, plus haut, et encore plus haut avec une forêt d'antennes. En face de lui, un authentique Leclerc, avec les maquettes de kits qui l'orneront dans le cadre de sa Scorpionisation : lui prendra de la largeur (protections) et de la hauteur (tourelleau téléopéré). Dans le même secteur, l'espace dans lequel la DGA explique Scorpion pour les nuls. Les animations 3D que j'ai pu voir cet après-midi semblent plutôt bien faites, et restent pédagogiques, provoquant assez vite l'échange avec les experts qui, normalement, ne sont pas loin.

Plusieurs autres pièces sont livrés à l'oeil du passant, comme un vrai Caïman du 1er RHC avec son vrai support d'armement assisté (le premier est entretenu à l'AIA de Cuers, le second est fabriqué... à l'AIA de Cuers). Près de 20 ans après la sortie de son grand frère, le DHY307 allégé (ou LW) sort du bois : il a été commandé en urgence opérations par le COS.
On l'avait dit en mai, le stand comporte aussi un espace lié aux forces spéciales, avec un VLFS (25 doivent être livrés en 2016, à partir de septembre). La présentation du véhicule évoque une charge utile de 2200 kg, et deux versions distinctes, combat (avec M134/M3M/LGA40) et logistique.

Il y a de bons moments dans la démonstration dynamique, qui se passe à l'écart. Mais toujours pas de buggy volante, promise il y a un mois par l'organisation.

Eurosatory 2016 : Une version tactique pour le Ground Master



Thales étoffe la famille de radars sol-air Groud Master avec la présentation d'une version courte portée, compacte et mobile : Le GM 60. Il s'agit d'un radar de 80 km de portée pouvant effectuer un grand nombre de missions : veille aérienne (Avec la possibilité de détecter de petits drones) défense sol-air (Avec des capacités de détection de roquettes et d'obus) et même veille surface (Détection de navires). Le système a été conçu pour être capable d'effectuer plusieurs missions simultanément.

Le système n'est pas nouveau en soi. Thales le propose à ses clients depuis 2010 et un premier contrat a été signé dés 2013. Cependant le Ground Master 60 est dévoilé pour la première fois officiellement au salon Eurosatory 2016.

Le système Ground Master a été adapté afin de pouvoir être embarqué sur un véhicule et pour pouvoir suivre l'évolution des troupes. Thales s'est appuyé sur des technologies déjà éprouvées pour développer ce nouveau radar dont la masse est inférieure à 4 tonnes. Le GM 60 utilise par exemple les mêmes processeurs que les autres radars de la famille Ground Master. L'antenne aussi est dérivée des prédécesseurs du GM 60. Le logiciel a par contre été adapté aux missions tactiques. Thales a développé un software se rapprochant de ceux employés dans le naval. A l'intérieur du système, les baies électroniques ont été montées sur des suspensions afin de les protéger contre les chocs.

Selon Thales, un radar mobile comme le GM60 est unique au monde. Le constructeur insiste également sur la fiabilité d'un système qui ne demande que 30 heures de maintenance par an !

Eurosatory : Safran dévoile son mini-drone Flyeye



Sagem Electronics & Defense (ex-Sagem) a dévoilé durant le salon Eurosatory, qui vient d'ouvrir ses portes, son projet de mini-drone : le Flyeye. Il s'agit du candidat de Safran au système de mini-drone de renseignement (SMDR), remplaçant du DRAC (Drone de reconnaissance au contact). Ce marché vise à acquérir jusqu'à 70 systèmes de drone à propulsion électrique et inférieur à 25 kg.

Le Flyeye est basé sur une plateforme polonaise développée par WB Electronics, dont plusieurs dizaine d'exemplaires sont en service. D'une masse de 11 kg, d'une envergure de 3,6 mètres pour une longueur de 1,9 mètre, le Flyeye offre un endurance de 3 heures et une portée de 30 km grâce à son système de navigation inertielle couplé au GPS. La boule comprend une charge optronique visible et infrarouge, avec pointeur laser, reliée par liaison de données en bande C à une station sol. La part de Safran dans ce système s'élève à 70% selon l'industriel français.

Lancé à mains d'homme grâce à un moteur électrique, le Flyeye a la particularité de larguer sa boule optronique (dotée d'un petit parachute) avant l'atterrissage, afin d'alléger sa masse pour une meilleure récupération.

Eurosatory: Estonian CV90s to get Elite hearing protection

Esterline's Racal Acoustics RA7000 Elite Hearing Protection System has recently been selected as the hearing protection and communication for the Estonian Army's new CV90 tracked vehicle, it announced on 9 June.

Estonian Signals corps officials have been integrating the system into the Estonian tactical network to allow the troops to communicate over three separate networks as well as the vehicle intercom.

Developed for emergency services, security, police and defence sectors, the Elite Hearing Protection System provides up to 36dB of attenuation and combines secure communications, advanced local area sound awareness and state-of-the-art hearing protection, into one unit.

The CV90 armoured combat vehicle was developed by Saab Bofors and BAE Systems Land Systems Hägglunds, which currently produces the entire vehicle. It has an all-welded steel hull upgradable with add-on armour that protects against 30mm armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot rounds. It also has a fire detection/extinguishing system as well as nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection. The vehicle can carry a commander, driver and gunner, and up to eight soldiers.

Eurosatory: Thales present new radio family

Thales has introduced a new family of software defined radios (SDR) for the export market at Eurosatory 2016.

Three new SDRs will make up the Synaps family which is based on the French Army’s soldier radio network - Contact. Synaps will be aimed at the export market.

The family will be made up of a vehicular, handheld and airborne system which will be able to be operated in fast jets and helicopters. Synaps-V, Synaps-H and Synaps-A respectively.

Thales is in the test phase of the French network-centric operational requirement. Testing of the vehicle-borne SDR for Contact set to complete testing in 2017, production beginning in 2018 and the handheld device completing testing in 2018 and production in 2019. Thales said that the dates for the airborne systems is yet to be determined.

‘There will be another product for long range naval communications,’ said Hervé Derrey, general manager and vice president of communication products at Thales, ‘The naval radio is likely to be developed by 2020.’

‘The main differences between Contact and Synaps is that we have added capabilities for sovereign needs,’ explained Derrey, ‘including enhancements concerning waveforms and high data rates that were not defined for France.’

The idea behind the two sets of SDR is to create one network for the whole brigade to allow for collaborative combat which will enable information to be shared with those not in the same chain of command.

The funding for Contact came straight from the customer, the French Army. The additions present in the Synaps have been self-funded by the company.

Snaps will enable the user to modify the equipment to its own data-rate-standard including the new European waveform known as ESSOR – European Secure Software Defined Radio. ESSOR is currently being developed by six nations including Finland, France, Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden.

‘Synaps will be able to be used by a small number of users all the way up to Brigade level with up to 1,000 users,’ Derrey added.

Other waveforms that will be supported by Synaps include the coalition wideband networking waveform (COALWNW) when it becomes officially defined. MANOEUVER and AIR POWER software waveforms are also supported. Synaps is able to operate in VHF and UHF.

Synaps offers services including voice, messaging, video, chat and Blue Force Tracking simultaneously and with differentiated quality of service, with the most critical data transfers being accorded priority status.

The new SDRs will be accompanied by the Synaps wave lab which will enable the user customised cyphering according to the national requirement.

Rheinmetall Weapon and Munition has unveiled a new 130 mm smoothbore tank gun at Eurosatory 2016 in Paris.

Development of the gun commenced in 2015, with the company using internal funding for the project. The first technical demonstrator (TD) was completed in May 2016.

After Eurosatory the gun will commence its firing trials from a static stand at Rheinmetall's proving ground, where its performance will be compared to the extensive simulation work already carried out on the weapon and its ammunition.

The new 130 mm smoothbore gun is an L/51 weapon and has a vertical sliding breech mechanism, increased chamber volume, and is chrome lined. However, it is not fitted with a muzzle brake.

Only scant details of the 130 mm L/51 tank gun have been released by Rheinmetall, with the company quoting an all-up weight of 3,000 kg, which includes the recoil system - the barrel alone is stated as weighing 1,400 kg.

The example shown at Eurosatory 2016 is fitted with a thermal sleeve and muzzle reference system (MRS) and these will be fitted for the upcoming firing trials. The MRS enables the weapon to be bore sighted on a more regular basis and without the crew needing to leave the platform.

In parallel with the new gun, Rheinmetall is developing a new generation armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot (APFSDS) round, which will feature a semi-combustible cartridge case, new propellant, and a new advanced long rod tungsten penetrator.

This will be followed by new 130 mm high-explosive air-bursting munition (HE ABM) that will have a number of fuze options depending on the target.

This HE ABM round will leverage from technology from the 120 mm DM11 HE ABM, currently in production for the home and export markets for use with Rheinmetall's 120 mm L/44 and L/55 smoothbore tank guns installed on Leopard 2 main battle tanks (MBTs).

Estonia's MILREM has broadened the mission set of its THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System) unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), equipping the platform with a counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) payload.

Speaking to IHS Jane's, MILREM's chief executive officer, Kuldar Väärsi, said the company has been working with Raytheon UK to integrate the GroundEye laser-based IED detection package.

Väärsi said initial integration work and demonstrations have taken place, but these have not yet included field trials.

MILREM has a long development programme mapped out for the integration of GroundEye, Väärsi said, adding that due to the size, weight, and power capacity of THeMIS it will be possible to add a number of secondary sensors and payloads that might include a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and manipulator for the interrogation and neutralisation of suspected IEDs detected by GroundEye and/or a GPR. In addition a radio-frequency jamming system could be an option for C-IED work.

MILREM will start to finalise the details of field trials for the GroundEye-equipped THeMIS after Eurosatory, Väärsi said, adding that the company has seen a lot of interest in this capability from potential customers in the Middle East.

THeMIS recently took part in the Estonian military's largest annual exercise, 'Spring Storm', where the platform acted in a logistics support role in a base environment, supporting operations via a new transport module that has been developed for the UGV.

Väärsi said MILREM will now look to trial THeMIS in a squad support capacity for dismounted operations, where it would function alongside manoeuvring forces. He expects this to take place in the third or fourth quarters of this year, depending on the availability of a suitable exercise.

The feedback from soldiers during 'Spring Storm' has been positive, Väärsi said, noting that MILREM is drawing on this to enhance the capability of THeMIS and make it more usable for the military.

Belgian turret manufacturer CMI Cockerill has teamed with engineering company Ricardo UK to bid for the British Army’s Challenger 2 tank life extension programme.

The companies signed an MoU today to formalise their relationship and a CMI spokesperson said that a bid will be submitted by the due date in July.

Whilst CMI will work on the turret components, Ricardo will do everything below the turret, such as the auxiliary power unit, drive line and suspension.

Other companies are expected to join the team shortly but CMI and Ricardo UK will lead the bid. The spokesperson said that between the two of them, they can manage everything required under the LEP apart from the armour.

As the design authority for the Challenger 2, BAE Systems, which has formed its own team to bid for the LEP, has provided CMI and Ricardo with the technical packages required. But CMI has experience on the Challenger with its in-house former Challenger 2 operators such as commander, gunners and instructors as well as maintainers.

The spokesperson told Shephard that CMI is prepared to make a significant investment in the UK to secure the contract for the LEP and an industrial site has already been identified where they will set up a facility to do the work and it will be a CMI-run factory.

Ricardo has experience on military vehicles with the Mastiff and Snatch post-design services work and they are bidding for work on the British Army’s Land Rover although are still waiting for the Request for Tender from the MoD’s DSG.

Bidders must submit their offers by 14 July and there will be a narrowing of the field to two teams that will face each other in a demonstration phase that will take 12 months before a final decision is made.

So far all the work has been paper-based with some 3D scans completed to confirm the interfaces on the Challenger that are part of usual engineering preparations.

CMI believes that with its global reach and expertise in turrets it will be able to offer a more cost-effective modern solution than their rivals and deliver it much faster. The spokesperson said the company was confident that it can bring these benefits because of volume of work it has internationally.

BAE Systems announced their team in early June. Other expected contenders include KMW, Lockheed Martin and RUAG.

Renault Trucks Defense (RTD) has unveiled an initial design of its Vehicle Leger Forces Speciales (VLFS) or Light Special Forces Vehicle, destined for the French Special Operation Command.

Encompassing a basic scaled-down model, the VLFS ‘Concept Demonstrator’ has yet to be fully designed and manufactured, although the Special Operations Command is already contracted to purchase 241 VLFS as part of a EUR250million deal with RTD.

Speaking to Shephard Media at the event in Paris on 13th June, company officials from RTD explained that the VLFS ‘Project’ would comprise a 4x4 vehicle with gross vehicle weight of 4.3T; payload of 1.3T; and 200HP engine power. The platform will also feature an automatic gearbox.

With a top speed of 120kph and capable of carrying up to four operators, the vehicle can be weaponised with 12.7mm and 7.62mm machine guns, tactical radio suite and C4ISTAR technology. The VLFS vehicle will measure 5m in length; 2m in width; and 2.2m in height, it was added.

Sources said confirmed that although the procurement decision had been made by the Command, French Special Forces would be able to tailor the vehicle to their specific requirements during the development phase.

A Technology Demonstrator for the VLFS is due to be ready in September 2016 with initial deliveries to French Special Forces expected to take place towards the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019.

The news follows the selection by French Special Forces of the RTD Poids Lourds Des Forces Speciales (PLFS), which represents a heavier version of the VLFS, based on RTD’s Sherpa tactical light armoured patrol vehicle family.

French Special Forces are set to receive a total of 202 PLFS platforms with first operational units within the Command expected to begin receiving vehicles in October 2016 onwards. An initial tranche of 25 vehicles will be delivered to French units for immediate deployment to theatres across Africa including Mali for counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.

Systems will replace in-service Panhard Véhicule de Patrouille Spéciale (VPS) Special Forces Vehicles, 4x4 and 6x6 ACMAT VLRA vehicles, 4x4 Auverland A3F platforms and 4x4 Peugeot P4 vehicles.

Il est attendu par l'armée de Terre pour 2017. Et il sera à l'heure a annoncé MBDA à l'occasion du salon Eurosatory 2016. Lui, c'est le missile MMP, le remplaçant du Milan, du Javelin et du HOT commandé en 2013 par la Direction Générale de l'Armement.

MBDA a annoncé le lancement cette année de la production de plusieurs éléments constituant le système MMP comprenant le missile mais aussi son poste de tir. Selon le missilier européen, le MMP est en phase finale de qualification. 20 tirs d'essais ont déjà été effectués ainsi que plusieurs autres tests au sol. La qualification finale du MMP est attendue pour la fin de l'année 2016.

D'une portée de plus de 4 km, doté d'un autodirecteur vidéo et infrarouge non refroidi, d'une charge militaire mixte et d'une liaison de donnée, le MMP a été commandé à 2 850 exemplaires par la France avec 400 postes de tirs. Mais le système est également proposé à l'export.

MBDA poursuit par ailleurs les travaux d'intégration du MMP sur différentes plateformes terrestres. Le missile sol-sol équipera les futurs EBRC (Engin blindé de reconnaissance et de combat) Jaguar de l'armée de Terre à l'horizon 2020. Chaque véhicule embarquera deux missiles qui seront identiques à la version développée pour l'infanterie. Par contre les missiles embarqués pourront être mis en oeuvre grâce aux senseurs des véhicules.

MBDA travaille aussi à l'intégration du MMP sur d'autre véhicules. Le MMP Impact est monté sur une tourelle de 250 kg pouvant être intégrée sur des véhicules légers. A travers le salon, on peut retrouver le MMP intégré sur des véhicules de Nexter ou de Renault Truck Defense.

Eurosatory 2016 : Airbus Helicopters teste le système H Force



HForce gagne en maturité. Airbus Helicopters (AH) a annoncé, à l'occasion du salon Eurosatory 2016, avoir achevé une campagne d'essais de deux semaines, en Belgique, de sa solution HForce pour l'intégration d'armement sur hélicoptères.

HForce vise à développer une solution simple et standardisée pour l'intégration de senseurs et d'armements sur différents hélicoptères de la gamme AH (H125M, H145M, H225M). Le système comprend un processeur central, le casque avec viseur intégré Scorpion de Thales, un senseur électro optique Wescam et des armements en nacelle ou en sabord. Il permettra de rapidement doté un hélicoptère de manoeuvre ou de reconnaissance de capacités offensives.

HForce a été testé pendant deux semaines sur un H225M. L'appareil a été équipé de nacelles avec une mitrailleuse de 12,7 puis d'un canon de 20 mm et enfin des roquettes de 70 mm.

AH espère que HForce pourra être qualifié d'ici fin 2017.

Le salon Eurosatory aura vécu une journée inaugurale particulièrement mouvementée alors que, sur le coup de midi, 50 militants du groupe auto-proclamé les « Désobéissants » ont réussi à barbouiller un char Leclerc exposé sur le stand du ministère de la Défense au moyen de peintures rouge, jaune, bleue et verte avant d’entrer dans un véhicule de transport de troupes, qu’ils ont sali de couleur rouge avant d’être maîtrisés par la police. Selon leur site web, 12 des militants ont par la suite été arrêtés.

Ces militants voulaient protester contre les ventes d’armes qui, selon eux, « produisent d’immenses fortunes et entretiennent dans le même temps les conflits les plus meurtriers. »

Comme tant de pacifistes, ceux-ci sont bien intentionnés mais vivent dans. Ils n’ont pas compris que bien que vendre des armes soit un business, la plupart des technologies développées pour les militaires ne sont pas seulement utilisées pour les protéger eux et leur mode de vie, mais aussi pour devenir des produits à usage quotidien. Le GPS certainement utilisé pour se rendre au salon est un exemple parfait.

De même, ils ignoraient probablement que 40% du salon sont également consacrés à la sécurité, c’est-à-dire aux pompiers et secouristes susceptibles d’être les premiers à leur apporter de l’aide sur la scène d’un accident ou lors d’un désastre naturel, à l’image des inondations récentes.

A l'occasion du Salon Eurosatory 2016, l'industriel belge FN Herstal présente la dernière version de son affût de 12,7 mm embarqué, le M3M. Ce système sera prochainement expérimenté sur les Cougar de l'armée de Terre.

Le M3M est un système de 180 kg fixé sur une plaque en alu, adaptée aux différents types d'hélicoptères, et d'une masse moyenne de 70 kg. Le système tournant peut être entièrement rétracté à l'intérieur de la cabine afin de permettre la fermeture de la porte de l'hélicoptère

FN Herstal insiste sur la précision de sa mitrailleuse de 12,7 mm. L'arme est dotée de systèmes d'amortisseurs afin de la rendre plus stable et peut être équipée de différentes aides à la visée.

Par rapport aux versions précédentes de l'affût de 12,7 mm de FN Herstal, le M3M bénéficie d'un canon allégé assurant un meilleur débattement et un meilleur angle de tir vers le bas.

L'autre qualité du M3M tient à sa cadence de tir. Une cadence fixe de 11 000 coups par minute. Deux fois plus rapide que sur les versions précédentes. Selon l'industriel belge, cette cadence de tir contribue également à la précision via l'utilisation de munitions traçantes.

FN Herstal continue de développer son affût afin de le rendre plus performant. L'utilisation d'une plaque en composite pour la fixation de l'arme au plancher de l'hélicoptère plus légère est étudiée. FN Herstal travaille aussi sur la modularité de l'affût afin de permettre le remplacement rapide de la mitrailleuse de 12,7 mm par une arme plus légère tel qu'une FN Mag de 7,62 mm.

Dans le domaine des armements embarqués, FN présente également à l'occasion d'Eurosatory ses système de nacelles dont le système RMP équipé d'une mitrailleuse de 12,7 mm et de trois lance roquettes de 70 mm.

Enfin, FN Herstal a dévoilé pour la première fois un système de viseur tête haute, le "FN HUD" pouvant être couplé au système de gestion de l'armement déjà commercialisé par la société belge.

S'associant avec une start-up marseillaise Traxens, Daher, le spécialiste français de la logistique présentait pour la première fois durant le salon Eurosatory une solution nouvelle : le smart containers & shelters. Ce container standard est bardé de capteurs et retransmet en direct ses données à un serveur interrogeable à distance, soit par le prestataire/transporteur ou l’utilisateur final. Les capteurs sont configurables selon les besoins du client : température, humidité, pression, localisation GPS... Ce qui permet de suivre en direct l'évolution du transport du matériel et ses conditions de transports. Le client final peut en se connectant à l'application de monitoring sur smartphone réaliser une déclaration de dommage, photo à l'appui, qui sera immédiatement transférée au transporteur. Ce container connecté s'adresse aux produits à très haute valeur ajoutée, comme un missile, radar etc.

Daher teste en ce moment cette solution auprès de ses clients défense comme MBDA ou Thales afin de recueillir des retours sur expérience avant de lancer la commercialisation de ce nouveau produit

OSHKOSH, Wis., June 13 (UPI) -- Oshkosh Defense will showcase its next-generation Joint Light Tactival Vehicle this week at the Eurosatory defense expo in Paris, the company announced.

The vehicle is set to replace the U.S. Army and Marine Corps' High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or Humvee, offering faster speed, greater protection and better off-road mobility, the company said.

It brings a smoother ride with all the protection provided by the Mine Resistant Ambushed Protected, or MRAP, vehicles.

It is based on Oshkosh's Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle and features a powerful drive train and TAK-4i suspension that enables troops to travel off-road at speeds 70 percent faster than today's gold standard, Oshkosh said.

The TAK-4i can be raised and lowered via interior operator controls that better foster transportation over air, sea and land.

It can be moved by everything from C-130, C-5 and C-17 aircraft to Chinook helicopters, the company said.

The JLTV's coming-out party at Eurosatory follows an exhibition in Jordan last month at the Special Operations Forces Exhibition.

The U.S. Army placed its initial order for 657 of the vehicles, 2,977 installed kits and related support earlier this year in a contract valued at more than $243 million.

Oshkosh was awarded a $6.75 billion contract to build nearly 17,000 of the vehicles in August. Lockheed Martin, which also bid on the contract, initially protested the awarding of the contract to Oshkosh, but withdrew its protest in February.

The Rheinmetall Group’s Defence unveils new Lynx Light Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle at Eurosatory 2016 exhibition.

Lynx features a Rheinmetall LANCE turret armed with a stabilized, externally powered, airburst-capable automatic cannon (either 30mm or 35mm). This enables Lynx to effectively engage targets with high precision at ranges of up to 3,000 metres – even on the move. Lynx can also be equipped with an antitank guided missile launcher and a secondary weapon station linked to the main optics (main sensor slaved armament). Not only does Lynx have hunter-killer capability, it can operate in killer-killer mode, since the commander and gunner can observe and engage targets independently of each other.

Force protection

With the diesel engine mounted in the forward section and a modular armour concept, the vehicle architecture offers a high degree of protection. The vehicle’s ballistic armour shields Lynx from antitank weapons, medium-calibre ammunition, artillery shrapnel, IEDs and bomblets. In addition, a spall liner in the vehicle interior protects the entire crew. Mine and IED protection packages, decoupled seats and the optional hard kill Active Defence System (ADS) significantly boost the vehicle’s survivability.

Situational awareness

The commander and gunner both have access to the Stabilized Electro Optical Sight System/SEOSS, a digital TV – IR optical system with an integrated laser range finder and fire control computer. In the fighting compartment, displays provide the crew with a seamless 360° panoramic view. Rheinmetall’s Situational Awareness System (SAS), featuring automatic target detection and tracking, enhances the hunter-killer capability and minimizes crew reaction time. Emerging threats can be swiftly engaged with Lynx’s main or secondary armament. Laser warning sensors and the Acoustic Sniper Locating System (ASLS) likewise form part of the sensor suite. A combat management system and intercom for tactical communication round out the array of on-board equipment.

Owing to the manned turret, the commander can still lead from the hatch. The gunner and driver each have hatches, too, while two soldiers in the rear of the fighting compartment can also observe the area around the vehicle from an open hatch.

Mobility

Lynx features an excellent power-to-weight ratio and can handle gradients of up to 60 degrees and lateral inclines of more than 30 degrees. It can cross ditches up to 2.5 metres wide and ford bodies of water up to 1.50 metres deep. Furthermore, it can climb over one-metre-high obstacles. The vehicle can run on either rubber or light metal tracks.

Another characteristic of Lynx is its versatility. For example, the new IFV comes in two versions: the KF31 and KF41 (KF stands for “Kettenfahrzeug”, or tracked vehicle in German). Weighing up to 38 tonnes, Lynx KF31 on display at Eurosatory and can seat 3+6 soldiers. Lynx KF41 is slightly larger and can carry 3+8 soldiers. Both vehicle classes – Lynx KF31 and Lynx KF41 – can be configured for other roles include a command & control, an armoured reconnaissance, repair & recovery and an ambulance.

Engineering and design company Supacat has launched its new light reconnaissance vehicle at the Eurosatory exhibition in France, that reported by www.upi.com.

The LRV400 Mk2 light reconnaissance vehicle is designed for special forces, border patrol or strike forces for use as a high performance off-road vehicle for rapid intervention operations.

“LRV400 Mk2 is the first reconnaissance vehicle to give the user the ability to deploy from a Chinook [helicopter] in full operational readiness,” said Phil Applegarth, head of Supacat, part of the SC Group. “Coming from the Supacat stable, LRV400 offers a scaled down version of ‘Jackal’ with its acclaimed all terrain tactical performance in all environments.”

The LRV400 has the capability of being converted from a 4×4 configuration to a 6×6 configuration for increased payload, capacity and range, Supacat said.

Supacat’s new vehicle carries a crew of three or four and has an operational capacity of more than 3,700 pounds. Its speed is as much as 100 miles per hour.

It also comes in a variety of lightweight armor solutions, weapons and communications systems, the British company said.

Le salon Eurosatory 2016 est l'occasion de découvrir le PLFS (Poids Lourd Forces Spéciales) de Renault Trucks Défense (RTD). Inspiré du véhicule 4X4 Sherpa (10 tonnes), il en diffère cependant par certaines spécifications : il affiche des pneumatiques élargies qui impactent le châssis, pour une meilleure tenue au sol. La partie cabine a été revue pour recevoir les armement des Forces Spéciales françaises : une 12,7 mm, trois 7,62 mm et des missiles (AT4CS...) et probablement du Milan en attendant le MMP de MBDA.

Allégé par rapport au Sherpa de RTD, il dispose d'une motorisation plus puissante, le moteur passant de 215 à 265 chevaux.

Il aura été développé en moins de 11 mois. La production a d'ailleurs déjà débuté. Bientôt qualifié, 25 PLFS doivent être livrés avant la fin de l'année aux forces spéciales françaises.

Safran unveiled the latest member in its family of JIM handheld optronics binocular range at Eurosatory, with French Special Forces understood to be already evaluating a small number of systems, Shephard has heard.

According to company officials, the JIM Compact handheld binocular system was designed directly in response to emerging requirements from operational theatres by French Armed Forces, including force elements from the French Special Operations Command.

Designed for sniper, close air support and fire support missions, the JIM Compact has been optimised by Safran to fulfil ongoing requirements from Special Forces for a target acquisition system with ‘very good accuracy and reliability’.

Defence sources suggested that French Special Forces had received ‘tens’ of JIM Compacts in addition to the supply of an undisclosed amount of binoculars to another European NATO member.

A Safran official could not comment on specific customers but explained: ‘Very often, Special Forces are the first customers to buy such systems. We maintain a very close relationship with our customers and are permanently listening to their recommendations.’ The French Army already operate 2,000 JIM Long Range binoculars.

‘These binoculars are ushering in a new generation of optronic equipment with breakthroughs including a third channel enabling low-light observation, completing the daytime and cooled infrared sensors; a rangefinder, laser pointer, magnetic compass and GPS to accurately locate targets; and transmission and remote-operation modules (with optional Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology), along with streaming video sharing, to support operation digitisation,’ the company explained.

However, the Compact variant also comprises a reduction in weight from 3.2kg to 2kg with integrated Low Light Level Imager; High Definition Colour Camera; and cooled Thermal Imaging sensor. The system also reduces a reduced ‘cooling down’ time of 3minutes (down from 4.5mins). Operators are able to view fusion or split screen modes through the device.

In Wide Field of View of 40.5-degrees, JIM Compact is capable of detecting and recognising targets out to 4km, while in Narrow Field of View of 4.5-degrees, this distance is increased significantly to 10.5km.

‘JIM Compact provides all the equipment soldiers need to visualise laser pointers and designators in one device,’ it was added, with officials describing how the system increased shared situation awareness with team members, particularly suitable for sniper pairs.

The device also includes USB 2.0 connectivity with 1GB Ethernet LAN as well as options for WiFi and Bluetooth networking, dependent upon customer preference. Still Imagery and Full Motion Video is stored on a Micro SD memory card.

At Eurosatory 2016 Saab is displaying the French Army’s AT4 Roquette Nouvelle Generation (Roquette NG) family for the first time.

France’s DGA defence procurement agency awarded Saab a contract in December 2014 for the Roquette NG project following a competitive evaluation to select a new weapon for use by the French army, navy and air force.

The DGA selected three variants of Saab’s proven AT4 family of 84mm shoulder-launched, disposable preloaded recoilless weapons for the requirement; more than 900,000 AT4 variants have been built for customers in more than 20 countries.

The first Roquette NG fixed contract (Tranche Ferme) is worth SEK295 million although if the eight consecutive project options through 2024 are exercised the the programme has a total value of SEK2.05 billion. The contract stipulates that the first option should nominally be released upon delivery of the first hardware.

Series deliveries will begin in 2017.

The AT4CS ER, chosen by France, is an extended range (ER) variant of the AT4 family which can be launched from confined spaces (CS). Its high performance warhead can penetrate more than 500mm of armour at ranges up to 600mm.

The AT4CS AST is a variant of the the AT4CS weapon fitted with an anti-structure tandem (AST) warhead designed to defeat urban targets such as reinforced concrete walls, earth and timber bunkers, and light armoured vehicles. The weapon, which weighs less than 9kg, has an effective range from 20-400m.

The AT4CS HE is fitted with a high explosive (HE) anti-personnel warhead which can be used to engage enemy troops in airburst or impact mode out to a maximum distance of 1,000m.

The weapons are equipped with an integrated red dot sight from AimPoint. Additionally all weapons can be equipped with the FCS 51 intelligent fire control system, also supplied by AimPoint. The FCS 51 incorporates a ballistic computer and support for engaging moving targets with the AT4 CS ER, and setting the distance of the airburst for the AT4CS HE round.

Eurosatory: Swedish SF vehicles drive in

Swedish Special Forces have begun to receive Renault Trucks Defense (RTD) Bastion Tactical and Reconnaissance Vehicles, defence sources explained to Shephard Media at the Eurosatory conference in Paris today.

Sources explained how Sweden’s Special Operations Task Group (SOG) were now taking delivery of an undisclosed number of 4x4 Bastion Armoured Personnel Carriers which would be used to insert, extract and support Ground Assault Forces (GAFs) and Special Reconnaissance (SR) teams particularly during Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT).

Vehicles will be delivered to the SOG, which is headquartered in Karlsborg, throughout the remainder of the year where it will support Special Operations teams which can be tasked by the Swedish Ministry of Defence to conduct ‘national strategic’ operations ranging from direct action, SR and military support operations.

Vehicles are likely to be deployed at short notice within a 6,000km range of Stockholm in line with SOG’s operational remit, which could see it operating across multiple environments including Arctic, Tropical, Mountain and Temperate environments.

The undisclosed number of vehicles will be split between the Särskilda Skyddsgruppen or Special Protection Group and Fallskärmsjägarskolan or Parachute Ranger Corps which has been rebranded as the Särskilda Inhämtningsgruppen (Special Intelligence gathering group).

The 4x4 Bastion APC family of vehicles has a gross vehicle weight ranging up to 14.5T with maximum engine power out to 340hp. Operated and commanded by a crew of two, the APC has the capacity to carry a team of eight operators. Vehicles are also available in Logistics; Command and Control; Ambulance; Workshop; and Cargo Carrying variants although industry sources were unable to confirm which of these would be included in the Swedish deal.

Similar vehicles, such as the Thales Australia Bushmaster Protected Patrol Vehicle, have been utilised by NATO Special Forces over recent years, enabling protected insertion and fire support during MOUT and Close Quarter Battle scenarios.

As a NATO SOF source explained to Shephard Media, so-called open top vehicles for enhanced situation awareness provide minimal coverage from small arms and rocket propelled grenades fired from high angle buildings in urban areas. UK Special Forces used such a Concept of Operation during operations in Iraq over the early 2000s.

Eurosatory: Permali bags Ajax, HMT Extenda orders

Permali Gloucester will supply composite armour materials to General Dynamics European Land Systems for the British Army’s Ajax vehicle, under a £15 million contract announced by the company on 10 June.

The materials will form a component of the vehicle’s ballistic protection armour measures.

The company has invested in new machinery and equipment to manufacture the newly developed materials for the programme, and to increase factory capacity.

Colin MacAdam, managing director, Permali, said: ‘This is a seven-year contract and the result of a great deal of hard work by many employees. This vehicle sets the standard for the use of the latest technologies – there were many new requirements that had to be achieved. Against international competition, we have demonstrated that Permali has developed world leading composite technology.’

Permali is also to supply composite ballistic armour panels to Supacat under a contract announced on 13 June.

The panels will provide ballistic protection on a specific HMT Extenda vehicle being designed and built for a major order that Supacat will be delivering in 2017/18.

The contract was won following a competition, which required Permali to demonstrate ballistic performance against a demanding set of requirements, in the wide range of environmental temperatures the vehicle will be exposed to.

Stu Olden, sales manager for land systems, Permali, said: ‘This is a significant contract for Permali. It is the first awarded to us by Supacat, a leading specialist military vehicle designer famous for its high mobility vehicles. Measured against credible competition, we have demonstrated that, as a UK SME, Permali maintains its position as a world leader in the development of composite technology for military platforms.’

Nexter has displayed a new modification of its Caesar 8x8 artillery system at Eurosatory 2016 in Paris from 13-17 June.

The new 155 mm artillery piece incorporates an automated ammunition handling and loading system for the first time.

Speaking at Eurosatory on 15 June, Didier Rampal, artillery marketing manager for Nexter Systems, told IHS Jane's that the main reason for adding automation to the system was "to support sustained fire in difficult weather conditions", such as the temperatures encountered in the Middle East. Alternatively the automation could allow Caesar to be operated by a reduced crew of just three (rather than the normal minimum of four).

The fate of 24 BAE Systems FH-77 BW L52 Archer (6 x 6) self-propelled artillery systems remains unknown according to the company after they announced at Eurosatory 2016 that they had begun deliveries to the Swedish Army.

Originally part of an order for 48 systems from the Swedish government procurement agency FMV, 10 have now been delivered. The six pre-qualification systems already in use will be returned to be reconditioned and the remaining eight will be supplied during 2016.

The other 24 that were part of the contract and previously destined for Norway before their withdrawal has yet to be confirmed.
