J-20 chinois à portée de Taïwan !

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 38 _12f8j74

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 38 0a0a39

PLAGF testing new 122 mm CTL181A-based self-propelled howitzer

by Samuel Cranny-Evans

Chinese state-owned media has confirmed that the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) has been carrying out field tests and evaluations
of a new lightweight 122 mm self-propelled howitzer (SPH) based on a modified Dongfeng Mengshi 6×6 CTL181A armoured vehicle.

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 38 _12f8j77
Chinese state-owned media released images on 29 September showing a new 122 mm CTL181A-based SPH alongside other CTL181A armoured
vehicles in Yunnan Province. The vehicles, which took part in field tests in Yunnan Province, are seen here being decontaminated. (China Weapon Test)

The PLA’s China Weapon Tests website reported on its WeChat page on 29 September that the new SPH, the designation of which was not disclosed, recently underwent rigorous testing with PLAGF troops in China’s southern Yunnan Province to assess both the performance and “battlefield effectiveness” of the weapon system under realistic combat conditions as well as varied terrain and weather.

The report, which showed images of at least two units of the new SPH – painted in army camouflage – taking part in the field trials, said the test results will be used to “further improve” not only the weapon system’s capabilities but also the way these can best be applied to a battlefield environment.

Chinese Type 055 destroyer has anti-stealth and anti-satellite capabilities

China's indigenously developed 10,000 ton-class Type 055 guided missile destroyer can counter stealth aircraft and low-Earth orbit satellites, a Chinese state-owned media recently revealed, leading Chinese experts to say onOct. 11 that the capabilities will give Chinese forces a key edge over their opponents in modern warfare, Global Times reports.

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 38 Chinese_Type_055_destroyer_has_anti-stealth_and_anti-satellite_capabilities

The Type 055 is equipped with a dual-band radar system that has anti-stealth and anti-satellite capabilities in low-Earth orbit, China Central Television (CCTV) reported last weekend. The anti-satellite capability in particular has prompted discussions among military observers.

Some of the advanced radar systems produced by modern technologies can detect low-Earth orbit aircraft, which often circulate the Earth at an altitude of 300 to 500 kilometers. If the radar system has a high enough performance, it can not only detect, but also track the satellites, which means the radar can then guide weapons to attack the satellites.

In an introduction video for Nanchang, the first ship of its type, released by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy during the Spring Festival holidays in February 2020, the service confirmed the ship has a displacement of more than 12,000 tons. The warship was previously only vaguely referred to as China's first 10,000-ton-class destroyer, without information of its exact displacement. "This has debunked some analysts' estimations that the Type 055's displacement is only a little more than 10,000 tons, and indicates the ship type could be even more powerful than expected," a military expert who asked not to be named told the Global Times.

The 12,000-ton figure could refer to a standard or normal displacement, so full displacement could potentially reach 13,000 tons, the expert estimated, noting that the Type 052D, a previous classification of Chinese destroyer, has an approximate displacement of just 6,000 to 7,000 tons. Displacement is an important indicator of a warship's combat capability in multiple aspects including firepower and its ability to sail in high seas, as a larger displacement results in higher stability, more fuel and ammunition, analysts said.

With a displacement of more than 10,000 tons, the Type 055 is a 180-meter-long, 20-meter-wide guided missile destroyer with 112 vertical launch missile cells capable of launching a combination of surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, land-attack missiles and anti-submarine missiles, according to previous media reports.

Given the large size of the Type 055, it would be naturally able to carry a type of air-defense missile capable of reaching targets in low-Earth orbit, Wang predicted, noting that the radar system used on the Type 055 can also transmit data via data chain to land-based air-defense forces which can launch anti-satellite missiles. Low-Earth orbit satellites can monitor vast regions of battlefields and provide rich intelligence to their operators. In wartime, if one side can suppress hostile satellites, it can neutralize a key part of a hostile intelligence source and gain an advantage for itself.

While it is also the first time that China's state-owned media has confirmed the Type 055's anti-stealth capability, it is not much of a surprise when compared with its anti-satellite capability, as China has already revealed several types of anti-stealth radar systems in many open occasions, military observers said. In a test conducted in 2007, China successfully destroyed a satellite, BBC reported at the time. Liu Jianchao, then spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, confirmed the test and stressed China was committed to the peaceful development of outer space.

Nanchang marks China's achievement of a globally advanced level in terms of surface vessel propulsion technology and that the warship's speed is of the top class. It did not reveal details of the ship's propulsion system or the ship's top speed. Analysts predict Type 055 has variants that will use full electric propulsion in the future, which could enable more optimized power distribution and realize the usage of high-energy weapons like lasers.

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 38 10a52

China placed a new order with JSC Russian Helicopters for additional rotorcraft, the aerospace group Rostec said in its newly released annual report.

According to the company’s annual report, earlier in 2019, JSC Russian Helicopters, a Rostec subsidiary, signed a record contract for the supply of new helicopters to China. The contract covers 121 new aircraft.

Within the contract, awarded from the Chinese government and private structures, the company will supply 68 Mi-171 helicopters (including upgraded Mi-171E), 18 Mi-171Sh helicopters (military transport), 14 Mi-171 helicopters with a VK-2500 engine, 21 Ansat helicopters.

A large part of ordered helicopters is intended for the needs of the People’s Liberation Army.

It is worth mentioning that the fist Chinese Mi-171SH hecliopters were spotted in the report of the Chinese TV channel Phoenix news on the activities of the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant.

Chinese Y-20 tanker variant apparently conducts aerial refueling for J-20 fighter jet

Aviation Defense News November 2020 aerospace air force industry

The development of the aerial tanker variant of China's domestically developed Y-20 large cargo plane is apparently entering the final stages, as
a recent photo captured what seems to be a Y-20 tanker variant conducting aerial refueling for a J-20 stealth fighter jet, media reports said. Liu
Xuanzun reports on Global Times.

Chinaese Y 20 tanker variant apparently conducts aerial refueling for J 20 fighter jet 1Possibly an artist view of the air refueling of a J-20 fighter

Combinations of the Y-20 aerial tanker with the likes of the J-20 fighter jet and H-6N strategic bomber can significantly expand the operational range of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force. The photo, which circulated on social media platforms over the past few days, although its authenticity hasn't been verified, shows a Y-20 dragging a refueling hose in the air, with a J-20 approaching from the rear in a move that looks similar to aerial refueling, Ordnance Industry Science Technology, a defense magazine based in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, reported on Monday. If the photo's content is conformed, it would be the first sighting of a Y-20 tanker variant conducting aerial refueling for a J-20 fighter jet.

Judging from the photo, the Y-20 aerial tanker was using a hose-and-drogue refueling system, while the J-20 was using a fuel-receiving probe, Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military aviation expert, told the Global Times on November 17. Now that the Y-20 tanker has made it to the sky and tested its capabilities with the J-20, this type of aerial tanker variant is likely technically mature and can enter test service, Fu said.

In February, Teng Hui, commander of an Air Force aviation regiment of the PLA Western Theater Command and Y-20 pilot, said on China Central Television that "The Y-20 cargo plane has variants like the Y-20 aerial tanker and Y-20 aerial early warning aircraft. I believe that people will see our Y-20 aerial tanker debut on the battlefield in the not too distant future."

It is widely expected that the tanker variant of the Y-20 will work together with and eventually replace the PLA's very few imported Il-78 tankers and the domestically developed but less capable HU-6.

According to information published by the Chinese Air Force University’s Aviation Open Day, the maximum take-off weight of Yun-20 is 179 tons, the maximum fuel load is 77.5 tons, and the maximum load is 55 tons, China Arms reports. As Yunyou-20 was developed on the basis of Y-20, its fuselage oil load should be the same or even more. The fuel supply method is the core technology of aerial tanker modification and the key to the modification of Yunyou-20. The analysis pointed out that, based on the current news, it is speculated that the fuel supply method of Yunyou-20 will still use a hose to refuel, and the fueling pod is hoisted on the wing of Yunyou-20, and the fuel hose is extended backward to fighters to carry out aerial refueling. In addition, according to the experience of other tankers, there will also be a refueling point located in the middle of the fuselage. In this way, Yunyou-20 can refuel three military aircraft at the same time.

Upon receiving aerial refueling from the Y-20 aerial tanker, the J-20 can extend its range to more than 8,000 kilometers and combat radius to more than 3,000 kilometers, Ordnance Industry Science Technology magazine said, noting that with several refuels, the J-20 can travel more than 10,000 kilometers for intercontinental flights.

The combination of the Y-20 tanker variant and the J-20 can cover the entire first and second island chains, becoming the PLA Air Force's sharpest spear in both attack and defense, the magazine said.

Fu said that the Y-20 tanker version can refuel not only tactical warplanes like the J-20, but also strategic ones like the aerial refuel-capable variant of the H-6 bomber.

Making its first public debut at the National Day parade in Beijing on October 1, 2019, the PLA Air Force's H-6N bomber can receive aerial refueling. Media reports suggest it can carry weapons including air-launched ballistic missiles and hypersonic missiles.

Chinese Version Of US’ B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber That Has A Strike Range To Hit Continental America

The Chinese H-20, seen as a copied version of the American B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, may have a “truly intercontinental” capability to strike as far as the American island, Hawaii, without mid-air refueling.

China’s Xian H-20 is still in the development phase and will be the first dedicated strategic bomber by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). With heavy American militarization in the Indo-Pacific region, the Chinese bomber is seen as an answer to strike stealth F-35 jets that Washington has been vying to equip the neighboring countries with.

The H-20 is expected to give a tough competition to the American B-21 Raider. Northrop Grumman is currently building the first test aircraft in Palmdale, California and the Air Force looks forward to procuring at least 100 B-21 Raider bombers.

The B-21, which will be in service in the next two years, will serve as an advanced, very long-range, large, heavy-payload stealth intercontinental strategic bomber and bring in new dimensions of stealth, software, offensive possibilities, and nuclear deterrence to the US Air Force.

There isn’t much information in the public domain as the bomber is still under development. However, based on the images and the little information available, analysts believe that the bomber is somewhat “indistinguishable from a US B-2.”

According to Kris Osborn of The National Interest, given China’s “well known and well-documented habit of stealing or copying US weapons designs,” H-20 has striking similarities with B-2, including the rounded upper fuselage, blended wing body, curved upper air inlets, and essentially no vertical structures. “There appears to be a fair amount of evidence, simply available to the naked eye, to demonstrate China’s overt “copycat” maneuver,” he noted.

According to a report by the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), a British defense and security think tank, the H-20 bomber will give China a truly intercontinental power-projection capability.

Quoting experts, the Chinese state media said that the H-20 bomber would have a range of at least 12,000 kilometers and 20 tons of store carrying capacity, meaning the PLA would be capable of striking Hawaii. Reportedly, the stealth bomber’s long-range wouldn’t even require refueling during its journey to strike Hawaii, reported the UK’s Sun.

Contrary to the Chinese media reports, the annual report to Congress by the US Departement of Defense, said the H-20 stealth bomber, developed by China-state owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), would have a likely range of 8,500 kilometers and a payload of at least 10 metric tons.

The RUSI report added that the H-20 would feature nuclear and conventional standoff missiles, a major break from previous PLAAF doctrine and equipment development practice. “The PLAAF (and PLAN) are currently configured as regional forces for a conflict within the first island chain with additional specific capabilities aimed at neutralizing or suppressing the US base at Guam.”

Guam is a major US military base in the Western Pacific and holds strategic importance for military response in case of a conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.

Song Zhongping, a former instructor with the PLA, told SCMP, that the H-20 bomber is designed to reach US territory as part of China’s nuclear triad, which also includes ground and sea-launched missiles. “But the flying design means it is unlikely to have aerial combat capability, therefore, stealth is more important,” he said.

Report estimates Chinese nuclear stockpile at 350 warheads

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 38 04864310

A paper published by the Chicago, Illinois-based Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has estimated that China has 350 nuclear warheads, significantly more than that estimated by the U.S. Defense Department.

The report, written by Hans Kristensen, the director at the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, and Matt Korda, a research associate at FAS, arrived at the number by counting both operational warheads and newer weapons “still in development.”

These weapons include hypersonic missiles, silo-based and road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles, and their submarine-launched equivalents, bringing the total number of nuclear warheads to more that the “low 200s” estimated by the Pentagon in its 2020 report on China’s military.

The think tank’s report also said an estimated 272 of the 350 warheads in the People’s Liberation Army are operational. That estimate includes 204 land-based missile warheads, 48 submarine-launched warheads and 20 aircraft-delivered gravity bombs.

The latter mission had been dormant for a while, although it has recently been reconstituted with China said to be developing an air-launched ballistic missile with a possible nuclear capability. A Chinese Xi’an H-6 bomber was recently seen carrying what is believed to be a mock-up of a hypersonic boost-glide missile, although its development status is unclear.

The estimate of 350 nuclear warheads does not include the suspected air-launched ballistic/hypersonic missile, nor does it include the multiple, independent warheads that will be fitted on the DF-5C ICBM, potentially further increasing the size of China’s nuclear stockpile even after accounting for the retirement of older systems.

Nevertheless, the report noted that the size of the Chinese nuclear stockpile is still significantly below that of the United States and Russia, which have thousands of nuclear weapons in their respective stockpiles. The authors wrote that claims by the Trump administration’s special envoy for arms control, Marshall Billingslea, that China is striving for a form of “nuclear parity” with the U.S. and Russia “appears to have little basis in reality.”

It also added that China has traditionally maintained a low alert level for its nuclear forces, with most warheads at a central storage facility and smaller numbers kept in regional equivalents.

The Pentagon concurs with this assessment, adding that launchers, missiles and warheads are kept separate, although it added that PLA Rocket Force brigades conduct “combat readiness duty” and “high alert duty” drills, which are believed to include “assigning a missile battalion to be ready to launch, and rotating to standby positions as much as monthly for unspecified periods of time.”

China refers to its nuclear posture as at a “moderate state of alert,” with the report suggesting that in peacetime this “might involve designated units to be deployed in high combat-ready condition with nuclear warheads in nearby storage sites under control of the Central Military Commission that could be released to the unit quickly if necessary.”
