The Bahrain Coast Guard is procuring six 18 m fast patrol boats - with an option for six additional units - from Turkish builder Ares Shipyard and UK-based design consultancy BMT Nigel Gee.

Announcing details of the project on 9 September, a senior BMT executive told IHS Jane's that the first of the composite-built Ares 58 FPB craft was now being outfitted in preparation for a launch date in mid-October.

"The first boat will be delivered to Bahrain by the end of 2013, with all the boats being delivered by the end of February 2014," said Mark Willbourn, BMT Nigel Gee's marketing director.

"The shipyard is confident that the option for a further six boats will be taken up by the Bahrain Coast Guard following trials of the first boats."

Key platform dimensions include a beam of 4.8 m and draught of 0.9 m. Two MTU 8V 2000 M84 diesel engines driving five-bladed fixed pitch propellers permit service speeds of up to 32 kt and a maximum speed in excess of 35 kt.

A light weapon station is located forward, fitted with a 7.62 mm machine gun supplied by the customer together with ballistic protection for the gunner. While the initial batch of craft will carry a FLIR Systems electro-optical night vision system and Raymarine navigation radar, the six follow-on boats are likely to receive a more comprehensive sensor suite.

The hull is manufactured using a class-approved composite glass fibre construction with significant carbon fibre reinforcement. "This has produced a high strength, lightweight, and very robust hull for the required performance", Willbourn told IHS Jane's .

Air-conditioned accommodation is provided for a crew of five. In a press release, BMT said that its naval architects had worked closely with Ares to develop a design that met the coast guard's "explicit desire to maximise living space below decks, as well as create an operationally effective vessel".

Kerim Kalafatoglu, the shipyard's executive director, stated that the new craft "far exceeds the customer's expectations" in terms of performance and appearance.

Ares has collaborated with BMT Nigel Gee on a number of recent projects. John Bonafoux, the UK company's managing director, said: "Given the growth in the market for such specialist types of vessels, we hope to develop this relationship further."

Modernisation des F-16 et nouvel avion pour Bahreïn !



Bahreïn, la Royal Air Force de Bahreïn va procéder dès l’année prochaine à la modernisation de sa flotte d’avions de combat Lockheed-Martin F-16 en service depuis 1990. Mais en parallèle, le petit Emirat va également procéder à l’acquisition d’un nouvel avion de combat dont la sélection est attendue d’ici ce printemps.

Modernisation des F-16 :

La première étape de la modernisation de la Force aérienne va débuter d’ici deux mois avec la mise à jour de la flotte de 20 F-16C/D actuellement en service. La modernisation comprend l’ajout d’un radar AESA, deux modèles sont en compétition, le RACR  de Raytheon et le SABR de Northrop-Grumman. L’Emirat va doter ses F-16 de missile AIM-120D «AMRAAM», de l‘AIM-9X «Sidewinder» ainsi que du pod de désignation laser «SNIPER» afin de mettre en oeuvre des bombes à guidage de précision. L’avionique sera également modernisée et l’ajout d’une liaison16 (Link16) est prévue.

Les quatre premiers chasseurs modernisés sont susceptibles d'être remis en service à la fin de 2016 ou au début 2017.

Remplacement des F-5 Tiger II :

Le second objectif de la modernisation vise le remplacement des 16 Northrop F-5E/F «Tiger II» en service par un appareil de combat multirôle. Trois appareils sont en compétition, le Cassidian Eurofighter «Typhoon II», le Dassault Rafale et Lockheed-Martin avec le F-16E/F «Viper».

Une fois de plus, on retrouve les deux adversaires que sont l’Eurofighter et le Rafale. L’Eurofighter bénéficie de quelques avantages avec le choix dans la région de l’Arabie Saoudite et plus récemment celui du Sultanat d’Oman. De plus, Cassidian à réduit considérablement les coûts de son avion tant du point de vue de la mise en oeuvre qu’à l’achat. Sans oublier qu’avec la nouvelle version T3 (F3) l’avion atteint sa pleine capacité.

De son côté Dassault peut faire valoir également le dernier standard du Rafale qui va entrer en service très prochainement. Reste à savoir si le non-développement du viseur de casque «Gerfaut» et des équipements jugés parfois «trop français» ne vont pas une nouvelle fois péjorer celui-ci ?

Le trouble fête pourrait venir des Etats-Unis avec Lockheed-Martin qui offre son F-16 «Viper». Avec très probablement l’offre la moins chère et la possibilité de mettre en place une flotte homogène. Trop peut-être ? l’image des USA est écornée dans la région et Bahreïn pourrait tout aussi bien hésiter à devenir par trop dépendante de l’Oncle Sam !

Début de réponse peut-être déjà, lors de l’Edition 2014 du Bahrain International Air Show du 16 au 18 janvier prochain !!

Bahrain is to launch a major upgrade for its Lockheed Martin F-16 combat aircraft during 2014, as a decision is also expected on acquiring a new-generation type to bolster its capabilities.

Initial plans for the modernisation have already been agreed with Lockheed, and a contract signature is anticipated in June or July 2014, says Col Salah Al-Mansoor from the Royal Bahraini Air Force’s planning headquarters.

Improvements will include the addition of an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, new multi-function cockpit displays and a Link 16 datalink. A Lockheed Sniper targeting pod should also be added, along with weapons including Boeing JDAM and other precision-guided bombs, the D-model version of Raytheon’s AIM-120 AMRAAM and the same company’s AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missile, says Al-Mansoor.



“We are looking for the upgrade to start in 2014, and to be complete by 2018,” he told IQPC’s International Fighter conference in London on 12 November. The first four modernised fighters are likely to be returned to service by late 2016 or early 2017, he adds.

The Common Capability Integration Programme upgrade is likely to use Lockheed’s M6.2 software standard as its baseline, Al-Mansoor says. An AESA system selection between Northrop Grumman’s Scalable Agile Beam Radar and the Raytheon Advanced Combat Radar has yet to be reached, he adds.

Bahrain’s air force currently flies 17 F-16C fighters and four D-version trainers, which Flightglobal’s MiliCAS database records as having been delivered in two batches between 1990 and 2002.

In addition to upgrading its current F-16s, Bahrain’s fleet modernisation plan also covers the selection of a new multirole combat aircraft, and the retirement of its last Northrop F-5 interceptors later this decade.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is the clear frontrunner for the former requirement, with an order to potentially be finalised at the Bahrain international air show, which will be staged from 16-18 January 2014. Another possible solution would be the Dassault Rafale, or, longer-term, Lockheed’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Al-Mansoor reveals that the Gulf Cooperation Council state is also considering the possibility of ordering a follow-on batch of advanced-model F-16s, as well as a new type. A decision is expected during 2014, he says, noting: “We must analyse and determine the cost of the future force structure.”

Apres je ne sais pas si les modes search et detect pose probleme, car en search c'est 300km mais en detect c'est bcp moins je crois..
