- DoD OKs $1.7 Billion In Arms Sales To Spain, Israel, 4 Others
August 03, 2007: 06:59 PM EST
WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The Defense Department on Friday approved $1.7 billion in foreign arms sales to six countries, including $780 million in radar and missile systems for Spain and $465 million in missiles and bombs to Israel. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which coordinates foreign military sales, notified Congress of the deals Friday as lawmakers were preparing to leave for the August recess. Congress has the power to block such sales but rarely steps in. Spain has requested a possible sale of two MK 7 Aegis radar and missile systems, which can defend ships from enemy missiles, and related equipment. Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), Raytheon Co. (RTN), and General Dynamics Corp. (GD) are the prime contractors. Offset agreements, which some countries require when making big weapons purchases, are expected as part of the Spanish deal. Offsets have not yet been determined, the U.S. defense agency said. Israel has requested a $465 million package that includes a range of precision-guided weapons and other equipment. The deal includes 10,000 Joint Direct Attack Munitions, or JDAM, tail kits; a slate of Paveway II weapons kits; and an array of bombs and fuzes. Boeing Co. (BA), Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK), Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC), Honeywell International Inc. (HON) and General Dynamics are the main contractors on the Israeli package. There are no known offset agreements, the defense agency said. "Israel's strategic position makes it vital to the United States' interests throughout the Middle East," the U.S. defense agency said. "The United States must provide timely and robust assistance that will help protect the sovereignty of the State of Israel. Israel, which already has these munitions in its inventory, will have no difficulty absorbing these additional kits," the agency said. Other potential arms sales approved Friday: -Canada has requested $209 million in radar warning receivers and related equipment, for upgrading its F/A-18 fighters. Raytheon and Boeing are the main contractors. -Bahrain has requested a $160 million package that includes six Bell 412 search-and-rescue helicopters, made by Textron Inc.'s (TXT) Bell Helicopter unit. -Brazil has requested $58 million in submarine combat systems and related equipment. Lockheed Martin is the main contractor. -Morocco has requested a $29 million package that includes 60 155mm self- propelled howitzers. These will be from the U.S. Army's excess inventory and there is no associated contractor. -By Rebecca Christie, Dow Jones Newswires; 202-862-9243; rebecca.christie@ dowjones.com http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200708031859DOWJONESDJONLINE000912_FORTUNE5.htm
