Berlin To Spend Billions of Euros Upgrading Military Hardware

BERLIN — The German military is to invest billions of euros to fix recurring problems with its aircraft, helicopters and other military equipment, an official said on Friday.
"We will invest up to €6 billion ($6.5 billion) in the next seven to eight years to obtain improvements in these areas," a defense ministry spokesman told AFP.
Der Spiegel news weekly, which first revealed the investment programme, said the army planned 120 measures to boost personnel and stocks of spare parts.
The paper Der Spiegel cited "numerous" defense documents, which confirmed the "hardware problems constraining the capacity" of the Bundeswehr.
It listed radar problems with Eurofighter jets and with winches on board the NH90 transport helicopters that hampered their use in operations.
Only four of military's 39 NH90 helicopters are currently useable, Der Spiegel said.
Germany's military has come in for repeated criticism in recent months over the state of its weaponry.
The G36 assault rifle became the butt of jokes following reports it had trouble firing straight in high temperatures.
The army has since stop using the rifle.
In September, Defence Minister Ursula Von der Leyen admitted that the army could not currently meet its commitments to NATO in the event of an attack on an alliance member.
She blamed the situation partly on delays in the supply of spare parts for planes and helicopters.

U.S. and Germany to withdraw Patriot air and missile defense units from Turkey
U.S. deployment of Patriot air and missile defense units in Turkey, which expires in October, will not be renewed after the end of its current rotation, according to a joint statement issued by Turkey and U.S. on August 16. However, if needed, the United States is prepared to return Patriot assets and personnel to Turkey within one week, the statement further said.
The two U.S. Patriot missile-defense batteries, which have been in Turkey as part of a broader NATO mission since 2013, "will be redeployed to the United States for critical modernization upgrades that will ensure the U.S. missile defense force to remain capable of countering evolving global threats and protecting Allies and partners – including Turkey," the joint statement read.
The United States will continue to work closely with Turkey especially in fight against ISIS and supporting "Turkey's air defense capabilities, including against ballistic missile risks and threats," according to the statement.
Apart from the United States, it is announced on Saturday by a Defense Ministry spokesman that Germany will also pull out two Patriot missile-defense batteries and 250 soldiers deployed in south-eastern Turkey to thwart attacks from war-torn Syria.
Turkey had requested the batteries from its NATO military alliance to help it bolster its air defenses against possible missile attack from Syria.
The Defense Ministry spokesman said Germany's decision was based on an assessment that the threat of missile attacks from Syria had significantly diminished.
NATO in 2013 stationed five Patriot missile batteries about 100 kilometers from the Syrian border. The German Army is reportedly buying Spike-LR Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) from Israel’s Rafael Defense Systems. The missile family has found export success with India, with the Bundeswehr planning to equip some Puma IFVs with the weapon. The German Defense Ministry has reportedly already purchased a number of the missiles, with the integration with Puma vehicles scheduled for completion by 2018.
ndia has been looking for a modern anti-tank/ infantry strike missile to take the place of MBDA Milan missiles that have been produced under license by Bharat Dynamics.
The finalists in this competition were the American fire-and-forget Javelin, and Israel’s Spike with its combination of wire guided or fire-and-forget modes.
As of October 2014, Spike appears to have won, despite offers from the USA to involve India in developing the next version of Javelin.
The Spike infantry system consists of a missile in its cannister, a tripod, a Command Launch Unit that contains the optics and firing system, and a battery. It can go from “off” to firing in less than 30 seconds, as the operator lays the cross hairs on the aim point using either the 10x day sight, or the clip-on thermal imaging night sight.
Fire-and-forget targeting uses the imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, but there’s also an optional fully guided mode, using a fiber optic wire that spools out from the rear. They can be combined via “fire and forget plus,” which locks a target before launch but can be used to change targets or abort after launch.
The missile flies in a lofted trajectory, hitting the target in a terminal dive and detonating a tandem high-explosive warhead that can defeat explosive reactive armor. The lofted trajectory also allows the missile to hit targets that are behind earthen walls, or otherwise not directly visible in line of sight. Reloading takes less than 15 seconds.
Embarrassé par un fusil d’assaut désormais réputé pour son manque de précision, le ministère de la Défense allemand semble enfin décidé à corriger le tir. Face à l’urgence, la Secrétaire d’Etat du ministère fédéral de la Défense, Katrin Suder, a annoncé hier l’achat de 600 HK417 pour remplacer une partie des G36 controversés, également fabriqués par Heckler & Koch.

Des expertises l’avaient finalement confirmé en avril dernier : le fusil d’assaut G36 ne supporterait pas les chaleurs extrêmes et l’humidité, deux obstacles provoquant un problème de précision. Fâcheux pour un pays qui désirerait s’impliquer davantage dans des opérations extérieures actuellement concentrées sous les Tropiques. Dix-huit millions d’euros ont donc été débloqués pour équiper les unités allemandes actuellement déployées en HK417. Un premier lot de 60 unités sera livré d’ici Novembre, les 540 restant devant suivre d’ici mi-2016. Heckler & Koch livrera également 600 mitrailleuses MG4 supplémentaires d’ici 2017.
Basé sur le modèle HK416 mais chambré en 7,62 x 51 mm OTAN, le HK417, ou G27P, a quant à lui passé les tests confirmant qu’il ne souffrira pas des mêmes problèmes de précision que son prédécesseur. Le G27P a par ailleurs déjà fait ses preuves dans les forces spéciales allemandes, et est également utilisé comme fusil de précision notamment aux Pays-Bas, Royaume-Uni et en France (les RAID, GIGN, Commandos de Marine, CPA et BFST en utilisent depuis 2008).
Une goutte dans l’océan par rapport aux 166 400 G36 commandés depuis 1997 pour l’armée allemande qu’il restera encore à remplacer ? Si le nombre de fusils remplacés laisse perplexe, cette solution intérimaire pourrait néanmoins favoriser le remplacement de l’ensemble des fusils défectueux. Une décision devrait être prise d’ici la fin de l’année, date à laquelle l’Allemagne devra choisir entre un upgrade du G36 ou un nouveau fusil d’assaut.
Germany Ministry of Defence Seeking Procurement of MQ-4C Triton UAS to Replace EuroHawk
According to German television news service Tagesschau / German public-service television network ARD, the Federal Ministry of Defence (German: Bundesministerium der Verteidigung) is seeking the procurement of Northrop Grumman-built MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial system (UAS) to replace the cancelled EuroHawk UAS program.
According to Tagesscau, the German Ministry of Defence is currently reviewing with the U.S. Navy to see wether the Triton could be cleared for export. The Ministry of Defence informed the German TV Channel that "results of the consultation are not available yet".
The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) ordered a variant of the RQ-4B, to be equipped with a customized sensor suite, designated EuroHawk. It was intended to fulfill Germany's requirement to replace their aging Dassault-Breguet Atlantique electronic surveillance aircraft of the Marineflieger (German Naval Air Arm). On 13 May 2013, German media reported that the EuroHawk would not be certifiable under ICAO rules without an anti-collision system; thus preventing any operations within European airspace or the airspace of any ICAO member. On 15 May 2013, the German government announced the immediate termination of the program, attributing the cancellation to the certification issue. Germany is now looking at options to fit the EuroHawk sensor payload on an alternative platform. Using the MQ-4C Triton appears as an obvious and easy solution as both EuroHawk and Triton are based on the RQ-4B Global Hawk.
When operational with the U.S. Navy, the MQ-4C Triton UAS will provide 24/7 ISR coverage virtually anywhere in the world. Its ability to dwell at high altitudes will improve intelligence collection and bring an unprecedented level of maritime domain awareness to the warfighter operating and sustaining up to five orbits across the globe. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced his government's intent to purchase the Triton UAS for high-altitude, long-endurance surveillance missions in March 2014.

German Army considers wheeled rapid response brigade

The German Army is considering the option of creating a wheeled response element for rapid reaction and force deployment, sources told IHS Jane's .
Given the extent of projected combat and organic support elements, IHS Jane's understands that the rapid response formation would very likely be up to brigade-sized. The new formation would be expected to deploy in both symmetric and asymmetric threat environments and be able to hold its own against tracked and armoured vehicles. The new formation would constitute a German contribution to NATO's Framework Nations Concept, where smaller armies can plug their capabilities into an organisational backbone provided by a larger, framework nation.
"What we are talking about are first conceptual considerations," a source close to the concept phase told IHS Jane's . "The idea is to be able to fully deploy this force anywhere in mainland Europe in up to 48 hours, making full use of the existing rail and road infrastructure. Also, this is not a rehash of the old tracks vs wheels battle. A brigade sized wheeled rapid response element could be a door opener for heavy forces."
Given the reality of limited personnel available, the new formation would most likely be carved out of existing army structures, with attached unit rotation not being out of the question.
While it's too early for fixed numbers, based on current estimations there could be a requirement for about 100 vehicles. IHS Jane's understands that the main vehicle platform for the new formation could be based on the so-called 'PuBo', a Boxer Multirole Armoured Vehicle 8x8 chassis featuring an adapted 30 mm cannon-armed turret of the Puma tracked infantry fighting vehicle currently in development by German industry. For operations against hardened and armoured targets, the PuBo could be armed with the multi-purpose, light guided missile system, the Bundeswehr's variant of the Rafael Spike-LR fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile.
Dans le cadre du programme de modernisation de la flotte d’avion de combat Panavia Tornado, la Luftwaffe a commencé à recevoir ses quinze premiers appareils dotés du nouveau standard. Ces travaux sont effectués par Airbus Défense.
Depuis le début de l’année cinq Tornado modernisés ont été livrés, soit deux plus tôt en 2015 et trois appareils ont été réceptionnés au début de ce mois. La semaine dernière des essais ont été réalisés au Etats-Unis avec deux Tornado améliorés sur le site de la base aérienne d’Holloman AFB. Selon le Lt Col Thorsten Weber, commandant de la Force aérienne allemande : « l’ensemble des nouveaux systèmes se comportent à merveilles »
La Luftwaffe a prévu de mettre à niveau 85 de ses Tornado actuellement en service avec le standard ASSTA3.0. En parallèle à cette modernisation, la Luftwaffe prévoit de recevoir quatre simulateurs également modernisés.
ASSTA 3.0 / 3.1 (Avionic System Software Tornado ADA):
Airbus Défense a été chargé par la Force aérienne allemande d’un programme de modernisation de la flotte d’avion Tornado. Cette modernisation comprenait trois phases dont la dernière et actuellement en oeuvre.
La modernisation comprend un système d'information multifonctionnel de distribution avec un système de liaison de données link16 moderne. Les Tornado pourront également disposer d’un nouveau dispositif de nacelle à pointage laser permettant l’usage de systèmes d’armes guidées de dernière génération. En plus de cette innovation, les Tornado de la Luftwaffe disposeront d’un système de communications radios ultra-modernes, d’un appareil d'enregistrement numériques de données.
Côtés avionique, la mise en place d’un dispositif d'affichage couleur avec intégration des données de l’Israélien Rafael compatible avec une nouvelle nacelle de reconnaissance offre de nouvelles perspectives à l’avion.
Une version Tornado ASSTA 3.1 est en cours de préparation avec le remplacement du moniteur CRT monochrome dans le cockpit arrière avec un écran couleur.
Pour la Luftwaffe cette modernisation s’inscrit dans une volonté de poursuivre l’usage de la flotte des Tornado jusqu’en 2025.
Planification de la flotte :
La planification du ministère de la Défense allemand prévoit pour la mise à niveau de 85 appareils de type Tornado, couvrant les versions ECR de guerre électronique du JBG 32 à Lechfeld et les machines de reconnaissance du AG 51 à Schleswig. Le reste de la flotte Tornado (toutes les machines standard de type IDS) seront remplacées par le EF2000 Eurofighter, un processus qui est actuellement en cours, pour JBG 31 à Nörvenich et doit être complété par la conversion de JBG 33 à Büchel.

Germany's first production batch of 1,215 new MG5 machine guns has been delayed by technical issues, the German Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed.
Ordered in June 2013, the MG5 (HK121) manufactured by Heckler & Koch (HK) is to replace the obsolete MG3 in service with the Bundeswehr.
First deliveries were scheduled from the end of July, but this has been pushed back to 2016 because of "irregularities that may require retesting", the MoD stated.
Under the 2013 framework agreement, Germany is to buy a minimum of 7,114 MG5s and up to as many as 12,733 at a cost of EUR118-240 million (USD113-270 million). Under that same agreement, 65 MG5s were ordered for trials under a low-rate initial production contract worth EUR2.76 million in July 2014, with the first production batch of 1,215 MG5s ordered on 17 March for EUR20.44 million

The German and Italian Navies are looking to increase their submarine fleets again in light of evolving security challenges, senior officials said at the Subcon 2015 conference on submarine technology organised by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in Kiel.
Germany An "arc of instability" now spans several continents, exacerbating maritime security challenges, and the Ukraine crisis has highlighted the need to still consider more traditional security challenges, noted Vice Admiral Andreas Krause, the head of the German Navy.
The Baltic Sea is also re-emerging as an area of importance for the German Navy including the ability to exert sea control and have a deterrent sea denial capability, added Captain Henning Faltin, head of future naval plans at the German Ministry of Defence. Ensuring a safe and open maritime space is important for regional countries and key to the Baltic states' access to the world in particular.
While new technology in the shape of sensors, weapons, increasing modularity, and more simulator training is due to solve some of the challenges, there may be a need to increase Germany's fleet of submarines beyond the current planning level of six boats. During the Cold War Germany operated in excess of 20 smaller coastal submarines and had expected to replace these with some 12 submarines after 2000; however, this number was then repeatedly cut. When all of Germany's remaining coastal boats were decommissioned in one fell swoop in 2010, this left just four Type 212A boats (commissioned in 2005/2006) in service, before the two more boats were added with an additional capability by the end of 2015.
While there is still no urgent need to add boats right away according to Capt Faltin, future operational capability is being considered well in advance, including the replacement of the current boats. This could start within the next 15 years and see a modest increase in the overall number of subs beyond the current level of six.
Italy The Italian Navy's submarine fleet currently comprises six boats, including two Type 212A built in co-operation with Germany, and four Improved Sauro-class boats commissioned in 1988-95. A second batch of two new Type 212A is under construction by Fincantieri, these new boats are due to replace the older pair of Sauro-class submarines in 2016, and the overall fleet was then due to shrink to four submarines by 2020 with the decommissioning without replacement of the third and fourth Sauro-class submarines.
However, instability and conflict on the shores of the Mediterranean, its importance for trade - and more recently, as a conduit for human and drug trafficking - has led the Italian Navy to step up its use of submarines. In light of the situation, two Italian boats have been continuously deployed for patrols off Libya since March, according to the commander of the navy's submarine force, Rear Admiral Dario Giacomin. The submarines were also active in support of anti-piracy missions in the Indian Ocean from 2010-13.
While the submarines are proving their versatility in these modern scenarios, Rear Adm Giacomin warned the importance of traditional roles should not be underestimated. "Deterrence, sea denial, and control remain the key reasons for operating the submarine fleet." The submarine force also hopes to stem the reduction in number of boats, with consideration being given to extend the life of two Improved Sauro-class boats by up to 10 years (maintaining a six boat fleet until at least 2025), and a push to increase the fleet beyond the planned four boats long-term in the upcoming defence White Paper.

En 2013, il avait été annoncé l’intégration de la 11e Brigade aéromobile néerlandaise (Luchtmobiele Brigade) au sein d’une unité de réaction rapide allemande, à savoir la Division Schnelle Kräfte (DSK).
Il était ainsi question de former une unité conjointe forte de plus de 13.000 hommes, dont 8.600 soldats de la Deutsches Heer, avec un état-major basé en Allemagne. Mais les choses n’en sont pas restées là.
En effet, les ministres de la Défense des deux pays, Mme Ursula von der Leyen pour l’Allemagne et Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert pour les Pays-Bas, ont annoncé l’intégration de la 43e Brigade mécanisée néerlandaise au sein de 1ère Panzerdivision allemande.
Comme la Koninklijke Landmacht a sacrifié ses capacités en matière de chars lourd sur l’autel des restrictions budgétaires (ce qui a fait le « bonheur » de la Finlande qui pu acheter à moindre coût 100 Leopard 2), cette intégration sera un moyen de les retrouver a minima.
Ainsi, le Panzerbataillon 414 allemand sera dans le même temps intégré à cette 43e Brigade mécanisée, qui dépendra donc de la 1ère Panzerdivision.
Ce Panzerbataillon 414, qui restera en Allemagne (précisément à Bergen-Hohne) comptera une compagnie formée par des militaires néerlandais, qui utiliseront finalement les 16 chars Leopard 2A6 qui devaient être revendus. Ces derniers seront modernisés pour être portés au standard 2A7, c’est à dire celui qui est utilisé par la Deutsches Heer. En outre, les Pays-Bas pourraient louer 18 chars supplémentaires.
Un accord visant à entériner cette coopération devrait être signé prochainement. L’intégration des unités commencerait alors vers la fin de cette année, voire au début de 2016. L’objectif est que cette division germano-néerlandaise soit opérationnelle en 2019.
Détail qui a son importance : les futures missions des unités qui formeront cette division resteront « sous le contrôle de leurs institutions nationales respectives ».
Counter-UAV system from Airbus D&S to protect critical infrastructure
Airbus Defence and Space has developed a Counter-UAV System which detects illicit intrusions of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over critical areas at long ranges and offers electronic countermeasures minimizing the risk of collateral damage.
“All over the world, incidents with universally available small drones have revealed a security gap with regards to critical installations such as military barracks, airports or nuclear plants”, says Thomas Müller, head of the Electronics business line at Airbus Defence and Space. “As a specialist in defence electronics, we have all the technologies in our portfolio and the integration knowledge which are needed to set up a quick-response protection system with extremely low false alarm rates”.
The system offers very high effectiveness by combining sensor data from different sources with latest data fusion, signal analysis and jamming technologies. It uses operational radars, infrared cameras and direction finders from Airbus Defence and Space’s portfolio to identify the drone and assess its threat potential at ranges between 5 and 10 Kilometers. Based on an extensive threat library and realtime analysis of control signals a jammer then interrupts the link between drone and pilot and/or its navigation.
Furthermore, the direction finder tracks the position of the pilot who subsequently can be arrested. Due to the Smart Responsive Jamming Technology developed by Airbus Defence and Space, the jamming signals are blocking only the relevant frequencies used to operate the drone while other frequencies in the vicinity remain operational. Since the jamming technology contains versatile receiving and transmitting capabilities, more sophisticated measures like remote control classification and GPS spoofing can be utilized as well. This allows effective and specific jamming and also a controlled takeover of the UAV.
The Counter-UAV System has been tested extensively at Airbus Defence and Space’s own premises and during customer presentations in Germany and France. Depending on the required configuration, an operational system would be available from mid-2016.

Avec l’attaque de Kunduz, les talibans ont rappelé ce que les experts savent déjà depuis longtemps : la situation du/des pouvoir(s) en place est plus que précaire, voire désespérée. Sans aide, les relais afghans de la démocratie embryonnaire que la coalition occidentale a rêvé de former — journalistes, ingénieurs, policiers, enseignants, traducteurs et esprits libres — rejoindront bientôt le flux des réfugiés.
En Allemagne, qui dispose encore d’un contingent de 850 hommes dans la province nord, essentiellement pour la formation, la nouvelle est une gifle. Après celle de la ministre de la Défense la semaine dernière, des voix plus claires encore en faveur d’un allongement du mandat et un retour des militaires continuent à s’élever.
L’ancien patron de la Bundeswehr, le général Harald Kujat, plaide ouvertement pour un nouvel engagement : «La mission est un échec, politiquement mais surtout militairement. Nous avons laissé un Etat fragile derrière nous. Le gouvernement central à Kaboul est incapable de contrôler la situation dans tout le pays, la corruption est omniprésente, la production de drogue en plein boom, les Warlords ont une énorme influence. Le pays n’a pas de perspective économique, sociale et politique», a expliqué le général Kujat lundi dernier dans les pages du Tagesspiegel.
Pour neutraliser les talibans et stabiliser le pays, il évoque une solution régionale impliquant l’Afghanistan et les pays limitrophes, afin que les talibans cessent de «disparaître à droite ou à gauche dans les espaces inter-frontaliers». Il ne voit pas d’autre solution non plus qu’un retour partiel à un mélange de présence militaire et de développement. Ce qui signifie un nouvel engagement militaire «avec pas forcément une troupe aussi nombreuse, plutôt des unités réduites mais bien armées et efficaces».
Pour le président du syndicat des Soldats (Bundeswehrverband), le lieutenant-colonel André Wüstner, qui reconnaît que cette option n’a que peu de supporters en Allemagne, il faut cependant à tout prix empêcher qu’un «vide politique» ne s’installe : «Quand nous évoquons la nécessité de supprimer ou combattre les causes de la crise migratoire actuelle, nous ne pouvons absolument pas dire que nous allons tenir le plan actuel de retrait des troupes», estime-t-il en soulignant que, dès le départ, les experts de la Bundeswehr ont considéré que le maintien d’une force réduite de 850 hommes au nord de l’Afghanistan ne rimait pas à grand-chose en termes de sécurité : «Une telle force n’offre absolument pas la possibilité aux militaires de réagir de manière flexible. Il faut relever les effectifs et allonger le mandat et j’espère que cette pensée mûrie à Berlin», a-t-il déclaré.

Les ennuis, c’est bien connu, ça vole toujours en escadrille… Quelques heures après avoir la communication du ministère allemand de la Défense au sujet d’un nouveau défaut de fabrication décelé sur des avions de combat Eurofighter Typhoon, le quotidien Süddeutsche Zeitung a révélé qu’un de ces appareils utilisés par la Luftwaffe avait perdu un réservoir externe alors qu’il se préparait à décoller. Cet incident a eu lieu en Estonie, où l’Otan mène une mission de police du ciel au profit des États baltes.
Cette information a été confirmée ce 14 octobre par un porte-parole du ministère allemand de la Défense. « L’avion a été immobilisé et des tests sont en cours », a-t-il indiqué.
Mieux encore : « En conséquence de l’incident, survenu sur une base aérienne en Estonie, la Bundeswehr n’autorise ses avions Eurofighter à s’envoler qu’après démontage des réservoirs externes, ce qui est fâcheux car sans eux, nos avions de combat n’ont plus assez d’autonomie pour survoler la mer Baltique », a expliqué le porte-parole allemand.
Enfin, en s’appuyant sur un rapport confidentiel du ministère allemand sur les projets d’armement en cours, le quotidien Die Welt a soulevé un autre souci concernant le programme Eurofighter : le développement du radar AESA (à antenne active) Captor E qui doit équiper bientôt ce type d’appareil accuse déjà 5 mois de retard et affiche un surcoût d’environ 80 millions d’euros.
Le développement de ce radar avait été lancé dans le cadre d’un contrat d’un milliard d’euros, signé en novembre 2014 par les pays partenaires du programme Eurofighter (Allemagne, Royaume-Uni, Italie, Espagne).
Germany's TDW Will Participate in the Upgrade of BAE Systems Spearfish Heavyweight Torpedo
On 29 July, TDW GmbH was awarded a contract from BAE Systems for the qualification and delivery of the insensitive munition (IM) blast warhead due to be used in the upgrade of the Royal Navy’s heavyweight Spearfish torpedo. This marks the largest order in the company’s history.
The upgrade, known as Spearfish Mod 1 extends the life of the torpedo, improves safety through the introduction of an Insensitive Munitions warhead and by utilising a single fuel system and provides more capable data links between the weapon system and the launching vessel. This results in capability improvements for the Royal Navy as well as significant reduction in through-life operating costs. Image: BAE Systems
Blast warheads can be used to combat both surface and underwater targets effectively. Ships in particular can be combated most effectively using a blast warhead, which generates a shock wave.
Through the initial assessment and development phases, TDW have played a leading role in the design and testing of the new Spearfish warhead. To date the testing performed on the warhead has included IM threat tests (to demonstrate insensitivity) and underwater trials (to demonstrate performance). TDW’s experience gained through the Sting Ray warhead programme has helped to ensure that the development of the Spearfish Upgrade warhead could be carried out so effectively.

The conclusion of Demonstration Phase 1 for the Spearfish Upgrade IM Warhead on time, cost and quality along with the proven collaboration between BAE Systems Maritime Services and TDW laid the foundation for this success. This order shows that we have mastered the complete range of warhead systems up to and including the heavyweight torpedo,” declared TDW Managing Director Ulrich Störchle. “This insensitive blast warhead will improve the safety and effectiveness of this torpedo significantly.”
Les Gregory, Product and Training Services Director at BAE Systems Maritime Services said: “TDW play a vital role in the Spearfish Upgrade programme by providing expertise and leadership in the development of the warhead. To date the blast warhead has proved its value in several tests and the cooperation between BAE Systems and TDW has been exemplary.”
Further qualification trials to prepare and qualify the upgraded Spearfish torpedo, including the warhead, are planned for the next five years. TDW will complete the final warhead demonstration phase by 2018, with the supply of production warheads, manufactured at TDW’s facility in Schrobenhausen (Germany), due to start in 2019.
