NATO Tigermeet 2012 in Norway
Published September 22, 2011 | By Rob Vogelaar
NTM 2012, unlike previously reported is NOT taking place in Portugal, but in Norway at Orland Air Base.
Due to increasing financial problems for Portugal, and the economic measures announced by the IMF last July. Budget for opperational training for the Portugees Air Force has suffered a drastic cutback, resulting in the cansellation of NTM 2012.
luckely only days after the announcement by 301 Sqn, the CO of 338 squadron RNoAF has already convinced Norwegian Generals, and has taken over the task of hosting NTM2012.

NATO’s Missile Defence – the first live-fire test
17 Nov. 2011
During the German-led exercise Rapid Arrow 2011, the NATO Active Layered Theatre Ballistic Missile Defence Interim Capability (ALTBMD) was succesfully tested. Until now ballistic missile threats were only simulated and did not include firing a real interceptor missile. This time an actual interceptor missile was launched against a target area.
“At the moment there are no indications and warnings that tensions are high, that we are under the threat of a ballistic missile attack. But we could use it if the situation would change,” General Friedrich Ploeger explains. As Deputy Commander of the Allied Air Command Headquarters at Ramstein, the exercise allowed him to practice his role in engaging ballistic missile threats, as one of the Allied commanders.
Speed is of the essence
During the exercise the radar of the US ship The USS Sullivans picked up a target missile and passed that information to a German Patriot Battery at the NATO Missile Firing Installation in Crete, to help it conduct an intercept. Since this communication involves the NATO Command and Control structure, the exercise showed that there’s no delay in the information flow between the US and the NATO Missile Defence systems.
“As this whole event only lasted about five minutes from the launch of the target missile to the final engagement, it also shows how critical a good C2 system is to the overall Command and Control process. Because time is very limited, we cannot pick up the phone and dial some number and try to get some people who we need to talk to. Everything must be functioning perfectly and working perfectly in order to really do Command and Control of missile defence,” General Ploeger says.
Missile Defence network
The live fire test, in which the target was successfully acquired and destroyed, is an important step in the development of NATO’s Missile Defence capability. The system consists of the sum of national missile defence assets, networked together. According to Major General (ret) Alessandro Pera, head of NATO’s Active Layered Theatre Ballistic Missile Defence (ALTBMD) Program, it is a good example of NATO’s multinational approach:
“Together it is more effective than the single sum of the individual assets that the nations provide. So, this is a real example of how we can perform a better mission with the contributions of the single individual countries that by themselves would not be able to perform the entire spectrum of the mission to defend NATO from ballistic missiles,” Says Major General Pera.
According to Pera the live fire exercise operationally validated NATO’s Missile Defence system. The next step is to improve and broaden the Missile Defence protection from protecting NATO military forces to also protecting its territory and populations.
“Up until now we have been dealing with the defence of forces. For the defence of forces there are some criteria. Forces are for example trained and are, to a certain extent, hardened, can be dispersed. Obviously the population and territorial cities are not, so we need to have different criteria to deal also with these additional requirements,” he says.
That way the civilian population can also be alerted and warned in case of a missile threat.

China and Russia launch naval drills featuring anti-submarine and anti-aircraft exercises
By Associated Press, Published: April 22
BEIJING — China and Russia launched joint naval exercises Sunday that highlight warming ties between their militaries and growing cooperation in international affairs.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said the six days of drills feature simulated anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and search-and-rescue operations, including electronic countermeasures and other sensitive technologies.
Retired major general Yin Zhuo said it shows a high degree of trust between the sides.
“It’s an excellent exchange for China to be able to drill jointly in such sensitive areas,” Yin told CCTV.
China’s Defense Ministry said China was sending two submarines and 16 ships to take part, including destroyers, escort vessels and hospital ships. The deputy chiefs of the countries’ navies oversaw the start of drills in the northeastern Chinese port of Qingdao, the home of China’s northern fleet.
The two militaries hold frequent exchanges, despite recent disputes over Chinese copying of Russian military technology such as Sukhoi jet fighters. China was a key customer for the former Soviet arms industry, but recent technological advances at home have made it far less dependent on Russian weaponry.
Much of that cooperation takes place within the confines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a grouping of Central Asian states that seeks to check U.S. influence in the region and began holding joint drills in 2005.
Formerly Cold War rivals for leadership of the communist world, China and Russia have since found common ground in countering liberal democratizing trends across Asia and Eastern Europe and frequently vote against Western initiatives in the United Nations Security Council.
Most recently, they have united to block any U.N. actions on Syrian violence that could lead to some form of humanitarian intervention, a prospect both nations abhor.

Eager Lion 2012
Citation :
AMMAN, Jordan — The U.S. military said May 9 that 12,000 troops from 17 countries are taking part in this month’s military exercises in Jordan, seeking to enhance their abilities to meet “security challenges.” “The tactical execution of Eager Lion 2012 exercise will officially start on May 15,” said Maj. Robert Bockholt, public affairs officer at U.S. Special Operations Command Central. “Eager Lion is an annual, multi-national exercise designed to strengthen military-to-military relationships through a joint, whole-of-government, multinational approach integrating all instruments of national power to meet current and future complex national security challenges.” Bockholt did not name the countries, which include U.S. ally Jordan. “We acknowledge the right of each participating country to announce their participation in the exercise on their own terms,” he said. In April, the U.S. Defense Department said the exercise would be held from May 7 to May 28. Bockholt said participants were gathering in Jordan from May 7 to prepare for the land, sea and air exercise, which will be held in “various training locations.” “In all, there are more than 12,000 service members participating in the exercise,” he said. Some local media reports have speculated that the war games are linked to the unrest in neighboring Syria, saying the troops seek to secure Jordan’s border. “Execution of Eager Lion 2012 is not connected to any real-world event. It has nothing to do with Syria. It is just a coincidence,” Bockholt said. The war games come as Jordan’s Special Operations Forces Exhibition is underway, displaying new technologies by defense manufacturers around the world. Jordan is a major beneficiary of U.S. military and economic aid, with Washington granting Amman $2.4 billion in the past five years, according to official figures.

Eager Lion 12 17-nation military exercise underway in Jordan
Jordan is playing host to the Eager Lion 12 international military exercises, the biggest in Jordan’s history.
Taking part are army units of 17 countries, including Jordan, the United States, France, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, to name but a few.
Special action troops, naval and air force units are drilled in carrying out joint operations.
The Saudi Defence Ministry insists that the joint large-scale military manoeuvres of the US Arab allies are in no way linked to the situation in Syria and Iran, despite the media claims to the reverse.
