Iranian Navy to Expand Operational Zone
The Iranian Navy is planning to expand its area of operation beyond the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in the next Iranian year (starting March 21), Commander of Iran Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has said. "We will find control over more waterways through dispatching fleets of warships of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy to the regions outside the Persian Gulf," the commander added. He also stressed that, "deployment of fleets of warships to other countries will be continued as we are trying to confront and defuse the [West's] Iranophobia propaganda." The boost to regional deployments will pave the way for preventing pirate attacks on Iranian tankers and trade vessels, according to Fars News Agency. The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008.

Iran mass-produces radar missiles Wed Mar 16, 2011 11:31AM
Iran has launched the mass production of optimized air-launched radar missiles capable of destroying targets with further precision, a top Air Force officer says.
“Iran Air Force specialists have begun to mass-produce air-launched radar missiles which have been optimized to be used in fighter jets,” Deputy Commander of Iran's Air Force Gen. Seyyed Mohammad Alavi told IRNA on Wednesday.
He added that the air-launched radar missiles have high capabilities in terms of range and destructive power and noted that they have been optimized to precisely hit and destroy targets from air.
The Iranian official emphasized that Iran's Air Force has greatly increased its potentials, saying the Islamic Republic's air combat capabilities are at the highest level among regional countries.
“The optimized air-launched radar missiles have been test-fired during various operations and produced good results,” General Alavi pointed out.
Iran has launched a campaign for self-sufficiency in the country's defense industries and initiated numerous military hardware projects, including some to produce aerial and seaborne military vehicles such as submarines, combat frigates, and various types of missiles.

Iran Designed and Built Jet Fighter 'Saeqeh' Enters Air Force Service
Iran Announces first all-Iranian aircraft squadron.
Photos: Press TV, Boeing, FARS News Agency, aviation-central.com
(SALEM, Ore.) - Iran takes a unique step forward in the world of military aviation with the announcement of the country's first jet fighter squadron comprised of all Iranian aircraft.
The HESA Saeqeh jet fighter; Iranian built and designed- now has become part of Iran's Air Force.
Saeqeh means 'Thunderbolt' in Iran and that name was applied to what was undoubtedly one of the best American WWII fighters, the P-47 Thunderbolt which had a ridiculous amount of horsepower toward the end of the war.
The name Thunderbolt is legendary in military aviation.
“The production of this kind of aircraft has been developing at high speed … and a fighter squadron of these fighter jets has been launched at one of the bases and is now flying,” The Iranian News Agency quoted Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) Deputy Commander for Operations General Mohammad Alavi as saying on Saturday[1].
He says Iran will mass-produce the fighter jets, and that IRIAF, outfitted with revamped equipment, "was well prepared to defend the skies of the country."
General Alavi also talked about Iran's development of strategic weapons, which are 'smart' and capable of pinpointing objects. This technology would allow the Iranian jets the same general capabilities of western jet fighters.
Israel is still relying largely on the aging American F-16 single engine jet fighter that was the first 'fly by wire' jet fighter employing full computerization to activate flight surfaces and actually control the plane in flight. It certainly isn't Israel's only jet, but the F-16' are Israel's primary weapon when carrying out frequent deadly raids on civilian targets in Gaza.
Perhaps it is Israel and the U.S. specifically that have driven Iran to design and produce this seemingly cutting-edge aircraft. Wikipedia explains that is the Saeqeh is actually the second generation of the Iranian Azarakhsh fighter:
"Saeqeh fighter planes tested successfully in Iran 20 September 2007. The Saeqeh is a joint product of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force and the Iranian Ministry of Defense."[2]
While there is little information on the specifications of the Saeqeh, my sense of 'aircraft awareness' was rewarded when I read that the two aircraft I immediately identified in looking at the Saeqeh, could not have been more on target. I was a U.S. Marine when the FA/18 Hornet first arrived at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro and all of us who were there will never forget how completely advanced this plane was next to our F-4 Phantoms and A-4 Skyhawks, which the Hornet replaced.
The similarity to the F/A-18 is easy to see; the trim design and twin boom tail and twin engine jet outlet located in the center of the aircraft are all very close. But this Iranian plane has an even sleeker and more sexy look on one hand, and that is where I spotted what I have to call my 'favorite' western jet fighter and that is the F-5 Tiger of Vietnam War fame that was originally designed to simulate eastern bloc MiGs.
This is the plane that the movie "Top Gun" used and called 'MiG-28's' (which do not and never did exist; they were saying without saying, 'MiG'29' as that was the elusive Soviet plane that was of much concern to western air forces in the mid-80's.) that were painted black with the essential red stars painted on the tails and wings.
According to Wikipedia, "Iranian officials have claimed that the Saeqeh is similar to the US-built F/A-18, although it is modeled after the US F-5E/F Tiger II and its outer appearance is similar to the latter."
The Managing Director of the Aviation Organization of the Ministry of Defense and Logistics of the Armed Forces, Majid Hedayat, described the Saeqeh as a logistic and combat plane with high maneuvering capability and an ability to bombard close targets. The Marine Corps F/A-18 is designated as a fighter and attack aircraft which is what the Iranians mean when they discuss their plane's ability to carry heavy bombs and also fly as a maneuverable, what we might call 'dog fighter' in the west.
As far as the data on the Saeqeh goes, there is no independent corroboration of Iran's technical data on the plane and therefore no way to verify "official" claims. Iran announced in 2008 that the aircraft has a range of 3,000 kilometers, and the ability to track down enemy aircraft, engage them in combat, target ground attack locations, while carrying an assortment of weapons and ammunition.
And in case you are wondering, the distance between Tehran and Tel Aviv is 1,590 km., so in theory these planes could easily reach and attack Israel, but they would lack the fuel to return to Tehran[3].
According to General Alavi, in addition to the production of guided missiles similar to cruise missiles, Iran has also managed to revamp ground-based missiles that can be mounted on bombers.
He added that the Islamic Republic has also produced heavy high tonnage bombs with high destructive capabilities. "These bombs are also capable of pinpointing objects", according to the Iranian commander.
He added that the Iranian Army has successfully ended the first stage of the mass-production of the bombs and it was now working to upgrade their efficiency.
I am anxious to see what other military aviation students, enthusiasts and participants have to say about this new advent in military aviation.

Iran to fit jets with radar-evading
Iranian commander says the Islamic Republic of Iran's Air Force (IRIAF) has successfully tested new radar-evading body kits designed for its aircraft.
Deputy Commander of Iran's Air Force Gen. Mohammad Alavi said the mass production of the body kits was scheduled to begin in the current Iranian calendar year (beginning March 21), Fars News Agency reported on Sunday.
Alavi also said IRIAF was in negotiation with several local industrial units to outsource the design and manufacturing of the aircraft.
Last month, the commander announced the launch of a squadron of domestically built Saeqheh fighter jets.
He further pointed out that the experts have managed to mass-produce the fighter jets, adding that IRIAF, outfitted with revamped equipment, was well prepared to defend the skies of the country.
IRIAF also announced a successful test of the research model of a radar evading aircraft known as Sofreh Mahi (flatfish).
IRIAF Commander Brigadier General Hassan Shah-Safi said Sofreh Mahi would be manufactured in its actual size in the near future.
Iran has embarked on a campaign for self-sufficiency in the country's defense industry, launching numerous military hardware projects, including aerial and sea-borne military vehicles such as submarines, combat frigates, and various types of missiles.

Iran to produce new cruise missiles
Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi says the country will inaugurate the production line of new domestically-manufactured cruise missiles in the near future.
“Iran's Defense Ministry will unveil important arms, marine, aerospace and electro-optic achievements in the new Iranian calendar year (started on March 21),” Fars news agency quoted General Vahidi as saying in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah on Thursday.
In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
In January, Iran successfully test-fired surface-to-air mid-range Hawk missile and the Iranian Defense Ministry delivered new naval cruise missile systems to the Navy.
The systems, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, are capable of spotting and destroying different targets at sea.
The Navy has successfully test-fired a range of powerful missiles mounted with laser technology, which display high precision and have a range of 45 km (28 miles) to 300 km (186 miles).

Iran mounts missiles on hovercrafts
An amphibious hovercraft of the Iranian Army Navy Force, (File photo) A senior Iranian naval commander says the country's Army has for the first time equipped the Navy's hovercrafts with long-range missiles.
“Iran is the only country in the world that has fitted its navy's hovercrafts with surface-to-surface missiles,” IRNA quoted Rear Admiral Seyyed Mahmoud Moussavi, a top Navy commander, as saying on Saturday.
Rear Admiral Moussavi attached special importance to the installation of such missile systems on the amphibious craft and pointed out, “Regarding the hovercraft's special qualities, including high velocity and versatility..., they can operate in various coastal and naval areas.”
The senior naval commander also referred to the 'comprehensive' researches in the country for the mass production of hovercrafts.
“The deployment of these hovercrafts has boosted the deterrence power of the Islamic Republic's Navy and substantially increased our capacities due to their high speeds,” Rear Admiral Moussavi concluded.

Iran Boosts Combat Capability of Strategic Aircraft
TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian Air Force commander announced on Monday that the Iranian experts have successfully revived the capabilities of the country's strategic Sukhoi-24 aircraft, including its laser missile capabilities.
"Our experts have revived important capabilities of Sukhoi-24, including its laser missiles, radar-guided air-to-ground missiles and long-range missiles," Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Air Force for Operations General Seyed Mohammad Alavi told FNA.
"Recently, the aircraft's laser missiles in a successful test-fire hit the target with zero-zero error," Alavi added.
He further said that the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) plans to test-fire the aircraft's long-range, radar-guided high-precision missiles in the near future.
"A number of high-precision television guided missiles of the fighter jet have already been tested and yielded good results," the commander noted.
Last week, IRIAF displayed a wide range of its operational fleet, including its strategic fighter jets, in an air show to be held during the annual military parades.
In August 2010, the Iranian Army equipped its fleet of Sukhoi SU-24s with newly developed night operations systems enabling the fighter jets to accomplish missions at nights.
"Sukhoi fighter jet has been optimized by the Army Air Force experts and now has the capability to hit and destroy targets with high precision in absolute darkness," Alavi told FNA at the time.
Also in August, a senior Iranian commander announced that the country's Air Force had equipped all its fighter jets with new radar systems and electronic devices to improve their performance in night operations.
"New electronic and radar systems have been used by the Air Force for night flights," General Amir Hossein Chitforoush told FNA at the time.
"These systems were upgraded and optimized during the last year and we are using them now," he added.
Chitforoush further explained that night flights, combats and bombardments are carried out in absolute darkness and merely with the help of highly advanced radar systems, thus, to conduct night flights and bombardment, the country's fighter jets should still be equipped with more upgraded equipment and systems.

Iranian Air Force Equips F-14 Fighter Jets with Hi-Tech Radars
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force has equipped all its F-14 fighter jets with highly advanced radars, Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Army Rear Admiral Farhad Amiri announced on Sunday.
"The radar system of these fighters are highly complicated because it consists of a set of separated parts which should be linked to each other when they are mounted on the fighter jet, and this is a very complex scientific and technological process," Amiri told FNA.
"Our radars used to be mainly American and British in the past and these were the Americans and the British who determined the place for mounting our radar systems and they were, thus, fully informed of their blind spots," he said.
"But today that we produce all our radar systems domestically, we ourselves specify the place where these systems should be mounted and installed," the senior Army official said, and added, "And we cover the blind spots with other systems."
Iranian officials have announced that the country has now reached self-sufficiency in producing radar systems in different frequencies and for various ranges.
Also, Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Ahmad Miqani announced in November that the country's experts are boosting the range of home-made air defense radar systems to 3000km.
"Iran is working on a radar system that can cover areas within a range of 3,000 km," Miqani said, adding that the system will enable the country to identify all flying objects around the country.
A senior Iranian Air Defense commander also said in October that Iran's radar systems can detect all flying objects in the entire region, even in the Persian Gulf littoral states.
"In addition to the Southern borders and waters, all Persian Gulf littoral states are under the cover of the radars of the Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base," Commander of the Air Defense Unit of Southeastern Iran General Habibollah Alizadeh told FNA at the time.
Referring to the production of radar equipment and instruments inside the country, he said that Iran has gained self-sufficiency in producing radar systems and it is no more dependant on any foreign country in this ground.

New ballistic missile delivered to IRGC
Iran test fired Qiam ballistic missile on August 20, 2010. An Iranian commander announces the mass delivery of the Qiam (uprising) ballistic missile system to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).
"The mass production of the Qiam missile, the country's first missile sans stabilizer fins, shows the Islamic Republic of Iran's self-sufficiency in producing various types of missiles," IRNA quoted Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi as saying on Sunday.
He added that Qiam's design reduces the possibility of being detected by enemy anti-missile systems and the omission of its fins has increased the missile's speed.
"The missile is able to hit its targets with high precision," he said.
Iran successfully test fired the Qiam surface-to-surface missile on August 20.
Qiam is part of a new generation of domestically-manufactured surface-to-surface missiles with liquid fuel.
In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and achieved self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Iran plans to build advanced submarines
The 120-ton Ghadir submarine Commander of Iran's Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says the country's naval forces plan to build “modern submarines" for a stronger Iranian presence in international waters.
“The construction of modern submarines is underway according to the needs of the country's naval forces for a stronger presence in international waters,” Sayyari told IRNA on Wednesday.
Sayyari noted that the naval forces are using new military equipments to “defend our country, interests and maritime borders.”
In April, the Navy announced plans to manufacture and deploy a new 500-ton submarine that is larger than Iran's current Ghadir submarine.
The 120-ton Ghadir submarines joined the Iranian naval fleet in 2007. The Islamic Republic navy is believed to be operating more than ten of the light-weight subsurface vessels, primarily in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
In recent years, Iran has made important breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.
The Islamic Republic has repeatedly declared that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that Tehran's defense doctrine is based merely on deterrence.

Iran helicopter crash kills two
A military helicopter belonging to Iran's Air Force has crashed near the central city of Isfahan, killing the pilot and co-pilot, a senior Iranian official says.
“The Cobra 209 helicopter belonged to the Shahid Vatanpour training base,” Deputy Governor of Isfahan Mohammad Mehdi Esmaili said on Monday.
Esmaili said the crash was caused by technical problems in the helicopter.
No further details have been reported about the incident.
Iran has suffered a number of aviation disasters over the past decade due to its aging air fleet.
In April, an Iranian Army aircraft crashed near the southern city of Sarvestan in Fars Province while on a training mission, killing the pilot and injuring the co-pilot.
The sanctions imposed against the country by the UN Security Council and the US prevent Iran from updating its aerial fleet, and make it difficult to obtain European spare parts for planes.
In January, at least 77 people were killed and 27 others were injured when an Iranian passenger plane crashed near the northwestern city of Orumiyeh.
