The report does not give details on specifications of the shell. It could not be independently verified. Iran occasionally announces the production and testing of military equipment, ranging from torpedoes to missiles and jet fighters. The country's military has run a program dating from 1992 which aims at self-sufficiency in producing modern weaponry

Iran starts manufacturing ‘Jamaran 2’ destroyer

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 31 Ship_iran_090311

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 10 / Trend S.Isayev, T. Jafarov/

Iran has started manufacturing "Jamaran 2" destroyer, Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said at a press conference, IRINN reported.

Sayyari added that the "Jamaran 2" destroyer is being manufactured domestically under supervision of Iranian specialists.

He also said the new destroyer model will be more advanced than the first "Jamaran" destroyer launched in the Persian Gulf waters in February 2010.

First Jamaran destroyer was also domestically-manufactured, and it completed its first international mission on December 18, after conducting counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.

The 1,420-ton destroyer, which is part of the 16th fleet of Iranian warships, is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities. Jamaran destroyer has a top speed of up to 30 knots and a helipad. The destroyer features highly advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface- and anti-subsurface systems. The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and naval cannons.

Iranian Navy officials have earlier stated that the production of five other naval destroyers similar and even more advanced than the Jarmaran-class destroyers are on Navy's agenda.

Admiral Habibollah Sayyari also said two "Ghadir" midget submarines were handed over to the Iranian Navy. "Ghadir" submarines were built by Iran specifically for cruising within the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf.

Iran prepares suicide boats

The Commander of US naval forces in the Gulf region, Vice Admiral Mark Fox, has said that Iran now has boats that could be used in suicide attacks.

According to Reuters he said “They have increased the number of submarines … they increased the number of fast attack craft, Some of the small boats have been outfitted with a large warhead that could be used as a suicide explosive device. The Iranians have a large mine inventory.

This comes as tensions are running high over the EU plan to completely embargo Iranian oil from its countries by July this year. Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation, which would strangle off much of the West’s oil supplies as well as that of other nations such as China. The Strait is one of the world’s most important choke points and some 20% of the world’s oil is transported through it.

Last week it was also reported that Iran had added two more light 150 ton Ghadir class submarines to its fleet of conventional submarines, having already taken delivery of three at the latter end of 2011. This brings their total number of submarines up to anywhere between ten and fifteen, three of which are of the 4,000 ton Russian Kilo class.

The Ghadir submarines are said to be capable of both torpedo and missile attacks.

Admiral Fox is however confident that the Straits of Hormuz can be kept open.

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 31 800px-Iranian_kilo_class_submarine-PD-150x150
Iranian Kilo Class Submarine

But the US Navy has been cautious about the possibility of small boat attacks on its large warships since the USS Cole incident in Yemen in 2000 when 17 people died and 39 were injured.

Admiral Fox said ‘We are very vigilant, we have built a wide range of options to give the president and we are ready… What if it happened tonight? We are ready today.’

But he did go on to say that diplomacy would be the best way forward. ‘So when you hear discussion about all this overheated rhetoric from Iran we really believe that the best way to handle this is with diplomacy… I am absolutely convinced that is the way to go. It is our job to be prepared. We are vigilant.’ he said.

Iran Assesses Radar Capabilities in Air Defense Drills

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's air defense units assessed the performance and capabilities of different types of mobile and fixed radar systems on the third day of Sarallah military drills in Southern Iran.

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 31 A1017421

During the current phase of the air defense wargames, different fixed and mobile radar systems which have been manufactured and upgraded by Iranian experts and are under the control of Iran's integrated air defense network were used.

Kasta and NEBO radars as well as the Iran-made Kashef (Discoverer) and Matla ol-Fajr radars were used to detect and identify aerial threats.

Iran's Air Defense Unit started massive air defense drills, codenamed 'Sarallah', in Iran's Southern regions on Monday to test the latest radar and missile defense systems.

On First day, the air defense units of the Iranian Armed Forces under the command of Khatam ol-Anbia base managed to detect and identify invading aircraft and started confrontation with the enemy warplanes using air defense systems and Scramble and CAP air defense planes.

During the second day of drills, Iran's air defense force assessed the preparedness and performance of its air defense artillery and mid-range missile systems against low-altitude aerial threats.

The drills were staged by the air defense units of the Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Iran's home-made air defense radar systems can easily detect cruise missiles and drones.

Last week, Commander of Khatom ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli announced that the country's Armed Forces have launched new radar and missile systems with various ranges.

Tens of radar and missile systems with various ranges have been manufactured and deployed in Iran's defense sector so far and new systems are on their way to join the defense network during the 10-Day Dawn celebrations, which began on February 1 to mark the 33th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Esmayeeli said at the time.

Iran has recently renewed and upgraded the weapons and defense systems of its air defense units.

Iran now capable of overhauling and modifying F-5 Freedom fighter jet

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 31 Iran_Plane_Manevr_120911_2
Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 23 / Trend S.Isayev, T. Jafarov/

Iran is now capable of overhauling such fighter jets as MiG-29, F-14 Tomcat and F-5 Freedom Fighter, Commander of Iranian Second Destroyer Jet base, Masud Ruzxosh said, Mehr reported.

Ruzxosh noted that it took Iran 12 years to do a complete overhaul on the F-5 Fighter jet. He said the jet will be able to fly again in three months, admitting that the jet will not handle any long flights.

"It would have been easier to manufacture a new jet, instead of modifying and reparing this one," Ruzxosh said. "However, with the imposed sanctions, country's engineers managed to overhaul the F-5 Jet".

The Northrop F-5A/B Freedom Fighter and the F-5E/F Tiger II are part of a family of widely-used light supersonic fighter aircraft, designed and built by Northrop. Hundreds remain in service in air forces around the world in the early 21st century, and the type has also been the basis for a number of other aircraft.

The Imperial Iranian Air Force received extensive US equipment in the 1960s and 1970s. Iran received its first 11 F-5A and two F-5Bs in February 1965 which were then declared operational in June 1965.

Ultimately, Iran received 104 F-5A and 23 F-5Bs by 1972. From January 1974 with the first squadron of 28 F-5Fs, Iran received a total of 166 F-5E/F and 15 additional RF-5Es with deliveries ending in 1976. While receiving the F-5E and F, Iran began to sell its F-5A and B inventory to other countries, including Ethiopia, Turkey, Greece and South Vietnam; by 1976, many had been sold, except for several F-5Bs retained for training purposes.

After the revolution, the new Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force was partially successful keeping Western fighters in service during the war with Iraq in the 1980s and the simple F-5 had a good service readiness until late in the war. Initially Iran took spare parts from foreign sources, later it was able to have its new aircraft industry keep the aircraft flying. Iran currently produces an indigenous aircraft titled, "Saegeh", which is built on the same platform as the F-5.

Optimized Missile-Launching Frigates Delivered to IRGC Navy

TEHRAN (FNA)- Power of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy increased after it received renovated and optimized missile-launching frigates, dubbed as Tondar, on Wednesday.

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 31 A0560288

The vessels were handed to the IRGC naval force in a ceremony attended by IRGC Navy Commander Brigadier General Ali Fadavi in Iran's Southern port city of Bushehr on Wednesday.

Addressing the ceremony, Executive Director of Missile-Launching Frigates Renovation and Optimization Project Abul-Qassem Valagohar said that over one million dollars had been spent on the project.

He added that the vessels' bodies, engines, fire-extinguishing systems, control systems, radar and defensive systems have all been optimized in the project.

Iranian Navy commanders have always stressed that the country's naval forces are capable of producing all the needed military equipments, including military vessels, submarines, torpedoes and naval missiles.

Iran in February inaugurated the production line of a newly unveiled naval cruise missile, called Zafar (Triumph).

The production line was inaugurated by Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi in a ceremony at the Defense Ministry' Aerospace Industries Organization on the occasion of the Ten-Day Dawn ceremonies, celebrating the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution back in 1979.

During the ceremony, the first cargo of Zafar missiles was delivered to the IRGC.

Iran's naval power has even been acknowledged by foes. In a Sep. 11, 2008 report, the Washington Institute for the Near East Policy also said that in the two decades since the Iraqi imposed war on Iran, the Islamic Republic has excelled in naval capabilities and is able to wage unique asymmetric warfare against larger naval forces.

According to the report, Iran's Navy has been transformed into a highly motivated, well-equipped, and well-financed force and is effectively in control of the world's oil lifeline, the Strait of Hormuz.

The study says that if Washington takes military action against the Islamic Republic, the scale of Iran's response would likely be proportional to the scale of the damage inflicted on Iranian assets.

Azerbaijan, Baku, Mar. 10/ Trend F.Milad/

Iran will soon complete building the second domestically manufactured destroyer, named the Jamaran-2. The work is under completion, the Iranian navy commander Habibollah Sayyari said on Saturday.

Habibollah Sayyari added that other destroyers will be also manufactured, but an exact date can not be determined for the destroyers to join the fleet, IRNA news agency reported.

On October 9, 2011, the Jamaran, the first domestically manufactured destroyer, was dispatched on a mission in international waters.

The mission of the fleet was to provide security for Iranian merchant vessels and commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden.

The Jamaran can carry helicopters. It is equipped with torpedoes. It is 94 meters long and weighs over 1,500 tons. The warship is capable of engaging in surface, air, and undersea warfare.
