Fourth vessel made in UAE joins Navy Haseeb Haider
16 February 2012 ABU DHABI - Abu Dhabi Ship Building, which constructs military vessels for the UAE Navy, has launched Mezyad, the fourth vessel of the Baynunah Corvette Class Programme.
The vessel, which was launched in the presence of senior officials from the UAE Navy on Wednesday, features the highest level of outfitting prior to launch. It is equipped with propulsion machinery including engine and weapons such as Main Gun and Side Guns that were installed last year.
Abu Dhabi Ship Building has also announced the completion of the extension of the quay wall of its shipbuilding facility by about 155 meters.
The expansion programme enables the ship maker to accommodate more vessels for fitouts, tests and trials.
Mohamed Salem Al Junaibi, Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Ship Building, said the launch “demonstrates Abu Dhabi Ship Building’s advanced capabilities.”
The Baynunah Corvette Class Programme, which is the largest warship construction programme and a first-of-its-kind project in the region, will significantly boost the arsenal of the UAE Navy and enable it to effectively fulfil its constitutional duty of protecting the UAE’s maritime territory.
The launch of the fourth vessel of the Baynunah Corvette Class Programme, the chief executive said was “certainly an excellent way to start 2012, marking another milestone.”
Construction of the Mezyad started with steel cutting for hull construction on May 10, 2007. The keel was laid on November 28, 2007, while the hull was completed in 2008 and the superstructure was installed later that year.
The Baynunah Corvette Class Programme is the biggest warship construction programme in the region consisting of six state-of-the-art warships for the UAE Navy. Each of the 72-metre highly-advanced corvettes can be deployed for various missions, including coastal patrol and surveillance, helicopter operations, and peacetime patrols.
The Baynunah Class Corvettes’ key features include a stealthy superstructure, a helicopter landing deck and a hangar.
The Corvettes will also be fitted with Anti-Ship Missiles, and air-defence missiles; 3D Surveillance, Navigation and Fire control Radars and a Multivendor electronic warfare suite.
The Baynunah Programme is being undertaken at the world-class Abu Dhabi Ship Building facility in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi. The first of the Baynunah vessels was built at CMN’s Cherbourg yard under a subcontract agreement with Abu Dhabi Ship Building. The second vessel, named ‘Al Hesen’, and the third named ‘Al Dhafra’, were launched in 2011. All six corvette vessels are expected to be delivered to the UAE Navy by 2014.

United Arab Emirates Air Force eyes Aussie top gun
Overseas ads for an Australian fighter pilot have appeared over the past fortnight. Picture: Liam Driver Source: The Daily Telegraph
THE United Arab Emirates Air Force is shopping around for an Australian fighter pilot.
Advertisements for an "overseas instructor-pilot" with "fighter aircraft experience", including F15 and F18, have appeared in aviation media over the past fortnight.
The UAE Embassy in Canberra declined to reveal further details about the job.
A Department of Defence spokesperson said there was a steady level of interest in RAAF pilots from foreign militaries.
"The overall rate of RAAF pilots and aircrew accepting employment with foreign militaries is low and relatively stable over time and does not provide a significant concern for the Air Force," the spokesperson said.
Pilots' Association vice-president Richard Woodward said instructor-pilot positions with Gulf militaries generally paid over $200,000 a year.

Airbus completes qualification of Mirage 2000 and F-16 for UAE in flight refuelling
Posted 26 March 2012 · Add Comment
Airbus Military has successfully completed receiver qualification of the two primary aircraft-types that the UAE Air Force will refuel from the three A330 MRTT multi role tanker transports that it currently has on order.
In an extensive series of flight tests in Abu Dhabi, the compatibility of the new generation A330 MRTT with UAE Air Force Mirage 2000 and F-16 Block 60 fighters was fully demonstrated. Operating from Al Dhafra airbase, the aircraft performed air-to-air refuelling at speeds throughout the refuelling flight envelope, at a range of altitudes, and in turns, climbs and descents as well as level flight. Other versions of the F-16 have already been qualified with the A330 MRTT, but the trials added the Block 60 variant used by the UAE which features large conformal fuel tanks on the fuselage. The F-16 was refuelled using the A330 MRTT’s Airbus Refuelling Boom System (ARBS). The Mirage 2000 was successfully tested in different configurations including the twin-seat version carrying two drop-tanks and two air-to-air missiles, and the single-seat version carrying six missiles and a centreline drop-tank. To refuel the Mirage 2000, the A330 MRTT used its two underwing refuelling pods, including demonstrations of refuelling two fighters simultaneously. Antonio Caramazana, Vice President Programme Director Airbus Military Derivatives, said: “It is very satisfying to qualify another two aircraft types as receivers for the A330 MRTT and we look forward to entry into service with the UAE Air Force later this year.” Crew training with UAE pilots is currently underway in Spain and the first two A330 MRTTs for the UAE, including the one that took part in the trials, are due to be delivered before the end of the year.

The UAE (United Arab Emirates) has ordered another 200 NIMR vehicles for its armed forces. The NIMR is produced by a UAE company with an assembly plant in Jordan. The NIMR is a hummer like vehicle designed to cope with the high heat, and abundant sand and dust found in the Middle East. The basic 4x4 NIMR weighs 4.4 tons, can carry 1.5 tons (or up to eight people), and be equipped with a remote control 12.7mm machine-gun turret. Top speed is 140 kilometers an hour on roads. This version costs about $82,000 each. There is a larger 6x6 version for carrying cargo. There is also an anti-aircraft version armed with four Mistral missiles ready-to-fire, and four more as reloads. An anti-tank version comes equipped with four Milan ATGM (anti-tank guided missiles) ready to fire, and four more as reloads. All NIMRs are equipped to take a variety of armor kits (providing different degrees of protection against bullets and explosions.)
NIMR development began in the late 1990s, and production began in 2005. NIMR was designed with the help of Russian automotive company GAZ, which also helped set up the manufacturing operation and supplies some of the components.
The UAE armed forces bought a thousand NIMR vehicles a year ago and have about 500 in service. The new Libyan armed forces have ordered 107 while Lebanon, Tunisia and Algeria are testing the vehicle.
NIMR is part of an effort by oil-rich Arab countries to develop their economies, and not just be dependent on exporting oil and gas.
