- Falcon forces Saudi F-15 jet to land
A Saudi pilot of a F-15 fighter had to make an emergency landing while his aide parachuted to safety after their aircraft nearly hit a large falcon, a newspaper reported on Monday.
The aide, a lieutenant in the Saudi air force, ejected out and parachuted east of the southern province of Asir, leaving the pilot, a captain, to steer the jet down in en emergency landing, Wojooh online Arabic language daily said. Neither the pilot nor his aide were hurt in the incident which took place during a routine morning flight over Asir near the border with Yemen, the paper said. “A fact-finding committee was set up to study the incident, which it found was caused by a falcon,” the paper said, adding that the bird was later found in that area without making clear if it was dead or alive. emirates247.com/news

Saudi Arabia seeks Tranche 3 capabilities for Typhoon fleet By Craig Hoyle
Saudi Arabia could modify its Salam programme acquisition of the Eurofighter Typhoon to equip part of the fleet with Tranche 3 capabilities. BAE Systems disclosed the potential contractual shift on 17 February within its annual results report.
Eighteen of the Royal Saudi Air Force's eventual 72 Typhoons have been delivered so far, with these having come off BAE's final assembly line at Warton, Lancashire. Riyadh has so far received 12 single-seat fighters and six two-seat trainers, with 10 of the total having been delivered during 2010.
"Whilst deliveries on the Salam programme remain on schedule, the programme is likely to be adjusted to accommodate some customer changes," says BAE. "These may include relocating final assembly of the last 48 of the 72 aircraft, the creation of a maintenance and upgrade facility in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and, in addition, the last 24 of the 72 aircraft might be delivered with modifications to allow future incorporation of Tranche 3 capability."
Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK have already signed up for Tranche 3A production of the Typhoon, with new capabilities to potentially include the incorporation of MBDA's Meteor beyond visual-range air-to-air-missile, Storm Shadow cruise missile and an active electronically scanned array radar by 2015. Approved in 2009, their combined commitment is worth €9 billion ($12.2 billion).
A government-to-government deal between London and Riyadh, project Salam includes the ongoing transfer of 24 aircraft originally contracted under the UK's Tranche 2 commitment to the four-nation Eurofighter programme.
Plans to start the in-country assembly of the multi-role type have been the subject of delay, while BAE has attempted to firm up its industrial arrangements with Saudi-based partners. Instead, Riyadh could now opt to have all of its aircraft completed in the UK, and instead focus its attention on establishing a domestic capability to provide in-service support and future upgrades.
"The programme changes will necessitate contract and pricing revisions that will need to be concluded in 2011. These will bias both sales and profits to the second half of 2011," BAE says. Signed in 2007, the Salam deal is worth over £4.4 billion ($7.1 billion).
With regard to another government-to-government sales opportunity in the Middle East region, the company says "significant activity is ongoing to agree an order for the supply of Typhoon aircraft to the Royal Air Force of Oman".

The training will be provided to three batches of six pilots, and two batches of six hoist operators and six rescue swimmers by six instructors in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Toulon, France. The training programme will cover theoretical and practical aspects right from the aircraft system familiarisation to a night SAR missions' qualification. DCI-NAVFCO executive vice-president Admiral François Dupont said the RSNF would be provided with complete training to carry out SAR missions, even during difficult weather conditions.

PICTURES: Airbus Military completes first A330 tanker flight for Saudi Arabia By Craig Hoyle
Saudi Arabia's first A330 multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) has made its first flight in modified form, touching down on 15 March at the end of a 4h 15min sortie.
Conducted from Airbus Military's Getafe site near Madrid, the debut comes ahead of the company's planned delivery of the Royal Saudi Air Force's first of six aircraft late this year.
"The crew reported that the aircraft, its systems and two General Electric CF6 engines performed entirely satisfactorily," says Airbus Military. The company has previously flown modified A330 MRTT aircraft for Australia (three) and the UK (two), and is also modifying its first unit for the United Arab Emirates.
Now equipped with underwing hose and drogue refuelling pods and an advanced refuelling boom system, the aircraft was modified by Iberia Maintenance engineers and technicians. The conversion work totalled some 140,000 man hours over a period of 16 months, the company says.
“It is a great satisfaction for us to have successfully completed a project which is certainly the biggest challenge we have ever faced in the transformation of aircraft,” says José Luis Ruiz de Castañeda, Iberia’s executive vice-president maintenance and engineering.
Airbus Military says Saudi Arabia's new tanker will enter a period of final certification and qualification activities ahead of its delivery. The nation's second aircraft is already in conversion, while work on a third will begin in mid-2011, it adds.Meanwhile, the company says the first two of the Royal Australian Air Force's five delayed GE-engined tankers are "technically complete and ready for delivery to the RAAF in Getafe, pending finalisation of contractual discussion".
The EADS unit had previously planned to hand the pair over late in 2010, but suffered a setback earlier this year, when one of Canberra's aircraft suffered limited damage during a night-time training incident with a Portuguese air force Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter.
Part of the tanker's refuelling boom separated from the aircraft and fell into the sea following a collision, although the A330 and F-16 both returned safely to their operating bases.

TCG Delivers Ground Support Systems to RSAF
Tactical Communications Group (TCG) has successfully completed the deployment of the Link 16 ground support system (GSS) to the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF). The GSS, installed at four RSAF airbases, will provide highly capable ground-based tactical data link (TDL) training and simulation environments for live, virtual and constructive (LVC) training of the RSAF's F-15 aircraft fleet. The TDL will enhance RSAF's command and control capabilities, and prepare its military for realistic air operations. The company has also trained RSAF personnel and has also provided live operations and training of F-15 aircrew and ground tactical data link users. The task order was issued under the Air Force net-centric solutions contract, held by General Dynamics Information Technology.
