(Reuters) - The Iraqi government is seeking to buy 36 advanced F-16 fighters from the U.S., American military officials familiar with the request told the Wall Street Journal.
This move could help Iraq reduce its reliance on U.S. air power and potentially allow more American forces to withdraw from the country than had been proposed.
The F-16, made by Lockheed Martin Corp, is the most sophisticated weapons system Iraq has attempted to purchase so far.
Late in July, the U.S. Department of Defense had approved up to $10.7 billion in arms sales for Iraq, including a $2.16 billion sale of M1A1 Abrams tanks built by General Dynamics Corp.
The U.S. recently announced F-16 sales to Morocco and Romania. Those sales, each for roughly $100 million per plane with training, related equipment and support included, offer an indication of how lucrative the Iraq deal could be for Lockheed Martin and its suppliers.
Iraq now appears determined to significantly expand the air power of its military, which has become more competent and confident in recent months but depends heavily on the U.S. for air support.
Iraq quickly has become one of the biggest weapons buyers in the world as it seeks to strengthen and professionalise its fighting force.
No one was available at the U.S. Department of Defense for comment.

Iraq Puts New F-16s Into Action Against Islamic State Agence France-Presse 4 p.m. EDT September 6, 2015
BAGHDAD — Iraq has put F-16 warplanes acquired from the United States into action against the Islamic State group for the first time, the commander of the air force said Sunday.
"Fifteen air strikes were carried out in the past four days," Staff Lt. Gen. Anwar Hama Amin told AFP following a news conference in Baghdad.
"Smart weapons" were used in the strikes, Amin said, without specifying the type.
Defense Minister Khaled al-Obaidi told the news conference that the strikes had achieved "important results" and that the jets will have "an impact on the conduct of operations in the future."
Amin told the news conference that the F-16 strikes had taken place in Salaheddin and Kirkuk provinces, north of Baghdad.
The first four Iraqi F-16s arrived from the United States in mid-July, out of a total of 36 Washington has agreed to sell to Baghdad.
The purchase had been a source of tension, with Baghdad repeatedly complaining that they have not been delivered quickly enough.
Insecurity in Iraq, where IS seized significant territory in June 2014, had delayed the delivery of the jets, with the first batch being sent to Arizona, where Iraqi pilots have been training.
An Iraqi pilot was killed when his F-16 crashed during training in Arizona earlier this year.
F-16 jets are much more sophisticated than other aircraft in Baghdad's arsenal and will boost Iraq's capacity for air strikes, which are currently carried out by aging Sukhoi Su-25 jets, Cessna Caravan turboprop aircraft and various helicopters.
But with foreign aircraft from the international anti-IS coalition also carrying out strikes against the jihadists on a daily basis, the delivery is not seen as a game changer in the war against the militants.
Oshkosh Defense receives a $47mn order from Iraq for 184 Medium Tactical Vehicles
Oshkosh Defense LLC has been awarded a $46,952,051 foreign military sales contract for the delivery of 184 medium tactical vehicles to Iraq, with an estimated completion date of Feb. 28, 2017, the US Department of Defense announced Tuesday September 22nd.
Oshkosh's Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) is a 7-Ton 6x6 heavy duty truck Off-road vehicle used by the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy, as well as Egypt, Greece and Iraq.
Designed as an improvement over the M939 trucks, the multi-variant MTVR is manufactured by Oshkosh Truck Corporation and entered service in 1998.
It is often referred to simply as a 7-Ton, reflecting its 7 short tons (6,400 kg) rated off-road cargo capacity. Maximum payload on paved surfaces is 15 short tons (14,000 kg).
All MTVR's are equipped with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS). This allows the operator to select tire inflation pressures in accordance to vehicle payload and terrain type. All models feature a built-in turret stand and roof opening for operating vehicle-mounted weapons.

Iraq and Saudi Arabia plan to acquire BMP-3 armoured infantry fighting vehicles from Russia.
Iraq plans to acquire 500 and Saudi Arabia 950 BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles from Russia, Albert Bakov, first vice president and co-owner of the Tractor Works Concern, the manufacturer of this armoured vehicle. The BMP-3 is in service with many countries including United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, Indonesia, Kuwait and South Korea.
We’ve got an application for 500 BMP-3s from Iraq and for 950 from Saudi Arabia," the interlocutor told the Russian press Agency.
He noted that there are no problems with orders, but a balance must be set between those for export and for the domestic market. "In 2016 we’ll start conveyor manufacturing to fulfill all the orders on time. However, the conveyor start-up calls for a lot of work in the component supply segment," Bakov added.
Previously it became known that before the end of 2017 the Russian Defense Ministry is due to receive over 200 new BMP-3s. In addition, there were reports that those combat machines might be purchased by Myanmar and Morocco planning to acquire small lots of 35 to 40 IFVs.
The BMP-3 is a Soviet tracked amphibious armoured infantry fighting vehicle, successor to the BMP-1 and BMP-2, which entered service with the Soviet army in 1990.
The first export customer was United Arab Emirates, which placed an initial order for 330 vehicles which were delivered between 1992 and 1995.
The main armament of the BMP-3 is a 100mm 2A70 semi-automatic rifled gun / missile launcher, which is stabilised in two axes and can fire either 3UOF HE-FRAG rounds or 3UBK10 anti-tank guided missiles. Effective range for the HE-FRAG round is 4,000m.
Second armament of BMP-3 includes one 30 mm 2A72 coaxial cannon and one 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun. One 7.62 mm PKT machine gun is mounted either side of the hull, firing forwards and these are operated by one of the front three crew members.

A photograph has surfaced online which purportedly shows a CH-4B unmanned combat aerial vehicle stationed at an Iraqi Air Force base, according to a March 17 report by Moscow-based think tank Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies cited by China's Global Times.
This is the first known instance of the drone, developed by Beijing-based China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), being exported, according to the paper.
The CH-4 series of drones, the design for which was heavily copied from the US MQ-1 Reaper developed by General Atomics, entered service with the PLA Air Force in 2013. http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?cid=1101&MainCatID=11&id=20150319000159

First footage of Iraqi Air Force T-50IQ
By Dylan Malyasov - Oct 13, 2015
Recently pictures from July 2015 of the first flight have surfaced. The Iraqi pilots that are flying the T-50IQ in South Korea have completed their training in Pakistan and are advancing in their F16 program. The Iraqi F16 training program encompasses training from beginning to end with the South Korean trainer being the last step into the F16 pilot program.
However the Iraqi bid did not just buy the trainer that South Korea and Indonesia use (the T-50). Rather it has opted for a custom version similar to the FA-50 (South Korean not the Russian stealth fighter) that offers more F16 like attack capabilities. The FA-50 has RWR (Radar warning recivers) / NVIS (Night Vision Imaging System) / compatible with JDAM as well as LINK-16 for multi layered defense and attack missions. More physical difference can be seen in the cockpit with larger MFDs (Multi Function Displays) than the TA-50 indicating the increased capabilities.
The Iraqi Air Force has also purchased the Czech L-159 advance trainers and light attack aircraft but these will be delivered as a single large batch (10 single seat attack & 2 two seat trainers) and are going to be used primarily for attack missions not training. The reverse is true for the T-50IQs as they serve as the last step in the F16 pilot training program. This does not exclude them from attacks against ISIS but does reduce the likelihood they will be used extensively.
Deliveries start 2016 on the first month and are scheduled to be delivered monthly for 12 months until order is complete.
Confirmed training fleet so far.

Australian and New Zealand forces about to train another 2000 Iraqi soldiers
With over 2100 Iraqi Army soldiers and officers trained by Australian and New Zealand forces in Iraq the combined Task Group prepares to train another 2000 soldiers. The 1st Battalion, 71st Iraqi Army Brigade, who completed approximately two weeks of training in June, returned with the remainder of the 71st Iraqi Army Brigade in late September to commence training.
Commanding Officer of the Training Task Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Ash Collingburn said that the trainers are looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. “Training this brigade represents a significant contribution to combat Daesh,” he said.
“Overall, the progress made in a short period of time has been pleasing and enabled by the trust we have quickly built with our Iraqi counterparts. They have looked towards us to instill confidence in themselves, their tactics and their equipment.”
The 71st Iraqi Army Brigade currently consists of approximately 800 Iraqi Army soldiers and is expected to receive reinforcements in the coming weeks.
“The training package will be similar to what we have previously delivered, although we are anticipating being able to achieve a higher standard of training because of the experience already held within the Brigade,” Lieutenant Colonel Collingburn said.
Training support has also continued with the Iraqi Army Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) Academy following a further request from the Iraqi Security Forces.
“We are also pleased to continue our relationship with the Iraqi NCO Academy which commenced a new course in early October,” Lieutenant Colonel Collingburn said.
“This course will train another 240 squad leaders drawn from across five Divisions of the Iraqi Army.
“On return to their Battalions, these NCOs will pass on their experience and the knowledge gained from the course on their fellow soldiers, ultimately contributing to the fight against Daesh.”
Further training will be provided to other Iraqi Army Battalions in the near future in accordance with the Iraqi Ministry of Defence priorities and concurrent operations against Daesh (ISIL).

L-159 Czech-built Combat Aircraft Ready to be Delivered in Iraq
Nov 4, 2015
Iraqi Air Force L-159 serial "5903" seen at Plovdiv Airport (@ Dimo Vichev)
L-159 Czech-built multi-role combat aircraft ready to be delivered in Iraq.
The Czech government in March 2015 has approved a sale of 15 subsonic fighter planes to Iraq, the defense minister said on Monday, following the failure of a previous attempt to offload surplus stock to Baghdad.
The Czech military has a surplus of the L-159 fighters, made by Czech firm Aero Vodochody and used as training or light combat aircraft, and has been looking for a buyer.
Stropnicky said his ministry would receive 750 million crowns ($29.89 million) for the Iraqi sale. Four of the planes are currently being used by the Czech air force, while the remaining 11 are stored by the plane maker.
The Czechs have been trying to sell the planes to Iraq for years. A previous attempt to sell Iraq 28 of the aircraft fell through in 2013 when Baghdad agreed to buy South Korea’s FA-50 planes instead.
The planes would strengthen the air power of the Iraqi government, which is battling Islamic State insurgents, and would also showcase the Czech arms’ producer, which wants to expand its exports.
The contract with Iraq is subject to approval by countries whose firms supplied parts used in the L-159, including the United States and Italy.
The Aero L-159 ALCA (Advanced Light Combat Aircraft) is a Czech-built multi-role combat aircraft. It is in service with the Czech Air Force. It is derived from the Aero L-59 Super Albatros.

Czech company Excalibur delivered to Iraq 45 BMP-1 armored fighting vehicles.
The BMP-1 armored fighting vehicles arrived at the port of Basra and will be deployed for Iraq armed forces. The Czech defence company Excalibur Army delivered an unspecified number of refurbished T-72 main battle tanks (MBTs) and BMP-1 (BVP-1) infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Iraq.
The BVP-1 is the version of the BMP-1 that was built in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War.
Cirtek added that Excalibur and the Iraqi defence ministry have agreed not to disclose the value of the contract saying only that it was worth several hundred million Czech crowns.
Apart from supplying the vehicles, Excalibur Army will also deliver complete sets of spare parts for each vehicle.
Iraqi Air force received 5 fighter jets T50IQ from South Korea Dec 21, 2015 0 60
Iraqi Air force received 5 fighter jets T50IQ from South Korea. Fighter jets T50IQ will arrive in Iraq in 2016.
Iraq has ordered 24 light attack fighters based on the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50 supersonic trainer, with deliveries due to be completed by 2017. The order, including training, is valued at $1.1 billion, but KAI says supporting the aircraft over 20 years, also contracted, will take total revenue beyond $2 billion.
Though Iraq’s aircraft are designated T-50IQ, an industry official says the aircraft will be built to the design of the FA-50 light attack variant of the T-50 family. Powered by a single General Electric F404 engine, the T-50 is a contender for the U.S. Air Force’s T-X trainer requirement.

Iraq requests $800m sale of Hellfire missiles from US
The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential $800m foreign military sale (FMS) of Hellfire missiles to Iraq.
Under the deal, Iraq has requested the supply of 5,000 AGM-114K/N/R Hellfire missiles, ten 114K M36E9 captive air training missiles, and associated equipment and defence services.
Lockheed Martin will serve as the principal contractor.
The proposed sale will improve a critical capability of the Iraq Security Forces in defeating ISIS, thereby contributing to US foreign policy and national security goals.
The missiles improve the Iraq Security Forces' capability to support ongoing combat operation and future contingency operations.
Manufactured at Lockheed's facility in Alabama, US, the AGM-114 Hellfire is a precision-strike, multipurpose, air-to-ground missile system. It is primarily designed to provide anti-armour capability for attack helicopters against a wide range of targets.
The 100lb missile is equipped with semi-active laser seekers, and can be locked on before or after launch for increased platform survivability.
Last year, the US approved similar sales worth $146m and $30m to Lebanon and France respectively.
France requested 200 AGM-114K1A Hellfire missiles, missile conversion kits, blast fragmentation sleeves, installation kits, containers and transportation.
The Lebanese Government requested 1,000 missiles, along with spare and repair parts, support and training equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training, logistics and programme support.
