Greece is planning to expand military-technical cooperation with Israel, Defense Minister Panos Beglitis said.
"We will soon sign an agreement on military cooperation which will mainly involve defense industry and supply of armaments," Beglitis said at a session of the Greek parliament on Thursday.
The minister emphasized the importance of closer military ties with Israel, but said bilateral cooperation with Tel Aviv would not affect Greece's relations with Turkey and Arab countries.
Greece has recently improved relations with Israel, exploiting the rift between Tel Aviv and Ankara over the Israeli attack on the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla last year. The raid killed nine people, all Turkish nationals.
This year, Greek authorities have already intercepted the attempts of three ships from Freedom Flotilla II to break through Israeli sea blockade of the Gaza Strip, while several other vessels from the flotilla have been detained in ports.
Greece offered pro-Palestinian activists to use other options to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has been under Israeli blockade since 2006.

Greece’s military is preparing to contribute to the country’s austerity drive by closing down several units in a bit to reduce its 500 million euros in annual spending, according to reports in Greek media.
The plan outlined by the Greek land, sea and air forces includes the closure of some military airports, a drop in the allowance payments received by officers and the total removal of some troop units.
According to the plan, an army corps, five divisions, some regiments and 80 units will be abolished in three years to provide 62 million euros of savings. The number of basic training centers will be reduced to 12 from today’s 35 to add an extra 34 million euros to the total amount of funds saved. The country’s land forces plan to cut mobilization strength in half, to some 100,000, while the air forces plan to combine some units and close supply depots. Unused military airports will be closed and the F-16 Bloc 30 fighter jet fleet will cease being a separate unit and act under a base in Nea Anchilaos, Thessaly. The 140-million-euro navy will be reduced by 15 percent. The annual 1.5 million euros of allowance payments to officers will be cut along with their expenses for education abroad.
resident of the Republic Karolos Papoulias on Thursday visited the special forces training centre in Nea Peramos, where he praised the high-level training of officers and servicemen.
Responding to a question on whether he is concerned about developments in eastern Mediterranean, he said “we are watching developments closely, as we should.”
Papoulias inaugurated the centre’s combat training pool accompanied by Defence Minister Panos Beglitis and Deputy Defence Minister Kostas Spiliopoulos.

Greek F-16 fighter aircraft will go to Israel
Greek F-16 fighter aircraft will go to Israel to carry out joint exercises with Israeli F-16 squadrons. The scenario of the exercise includes attack on ground targets and collaboration in air to air missions. However, the arrival of Israeli F16 fighter aircraft and helicopters in the Araxos AB and Andravida AB in Greece for joint exercises was canceled, because basic principle of the Israeli Air Force is that in times of crisis all its aircraft should be located in the country’s airports.
