Greece will finally accept its three remaining Type 214 and sole upgraded Type 209/1200 submarines into service, Greek Minister of Defence Demetrios Avramopoulos announced on 15 March.
The four boats that are currently lying finished at Hellenic Shipyards, in Skaramangas, will be transferred to the custody of the Greek Navy, which will conduct minor modifications on them and undertake sea trials in Souda Bay, Crete, before commissioning them into service. The cost of this process is estimated to be EUR75.5 million (USD105 million), which is already available in the navy's budget, with an in-service date planned for 2015. A detailed briefing on the costs is set to be given to the parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee on 20 March.

Greece to conduct Bulgarian air policing
Greek fighter aircraft will begin policing Bulgarian airspace by the middle of the year, following the signing of a landmark agreement between the two countries on 18 March. Signed by the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) Chief of Staff Evangelos Tournas and his Bulgarian counterpart, Constantin Popov, the technical agreement defines a framework for cross-border air policing operations so the HAF can undertake air defence missions in Bulgarian airspace. The HAF is expected to begin policing Bulgarian airspace in mid-2014, within 120 days from the date of signing. The Bulgarian Air Force has a limited and ageing fighter fleet, consisting of MiG-29 'Fulcrum' and MiG-21 'Fishbed' fighters.
Greek Parliament Passes Law Amendment for Four Navy Submarines
The Greek Parliament on Thursday passed a law amendment which provides for the completion of the certification procedures and the operational accession of four new submarines into the Greek Navy fleet. New Democracy and PASOK — the two coalition government partners — as well as Democratic Left (DIMAR) voted in favor of the law amendment, while the main opposition party’s SYRIZA MPs voted a more neutral “present.” - See more at: http://greece.greekreporter.com/2014/04/11/greek-parliament-passes-law-amendment-for-four-navy-submarines/#sthash.4J5NAxYO.dpuf
Speaking in Parliament earlier on Thursday, Greece ‘s Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos declared the end of the lingering problem of the four new Naval submarines at Skaramaga shipyards, in the framework of presenting the relevant law amendment.
Avramopoulos commented, that “a definite end to the submarine adventure is hereby put.” The Greek state demands from the owners of the shipyards the return of payments worth 360 million euros unduly paid during 2010-2011.
The minister claimed, that if the courts finally justify the Greek state’s case for the recovery of its funds, there will be a substantial decrease in the final cost of building the submarines, even in comparison to their contractual cost.
He also notified the Parliament, that the four new submarines have already been manned with their crews, which are highly trained and well-prepared for their missions. The Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG) signed a contract on April 23 with Croatia's Montmontaza Greben Shipyard for the delivery of six POB-24 coastal patrol craft, at a cost of EUR13.3 million (USD18.36 million). The glass reinforced plastic (GRP) POB-24 is 24.6 m long, and is equipped with two diesel engines that enable each craft to have a maximum speed of 30 kt and a range of 400 n miles. The crew of seven can be augmented by 25 additional personnel for brief periods. 75% of the funding for the contract was provided by the European Union's (EU's) External Borders Fund, with the balance drawn from Greece's Ministry of Merchant Marine and the Aegean.
