DATE:25/03/09 SOURCE:Flight International Elbit Systems lands helmet-mounted display deal with South Korea By Arie Egozi
Elbit Systems has received a contract to supply advanced helmet-mounted display systems for the South Korean army's Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) programme.
Under the deal, Elbit will supply prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries with equipment for its ongoing development effort, which is expected to lead to the manufacture of up to 250 tactical transport helicopters. The Israeli company's initial contract covers those development aircraft due to be delivered in 2009-10, but it believes the agreement could lead to follow-on orders to equip the entire KUH fleet and additional military rotorcraft.
"We believe this selection will lead to further head-up display projects in South Korea and worldwide," says Yoram Shmuely, co-general manager of Elbit's Aerospace Division.
Elbit says its helmet-mounted display systems enable helicopter pilots to fly with their "head out of the cockpit", boosting situational awareness and safety by projecting essential flight data, plus navigation waypoints and threat data into their line of sight.

Raytheon Awarded Airborne Radar Contracts at Year's End Worth $320 Million
Further growth expected in AESA radar programs
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) booked $320 million this month in new contract awards related to its active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar programs for domestic and international customers.
With active electronic beam scanning, which allows the radar beam to be steered at nearly the speed of light, Raytheon AESA radars optimize situational awareness and provide superior air-to-air and air-to-surface capability. The agile beam enables the radars to "interleave" in near-real time, so that pilot and crew can use both modes simultaneously.
After designing and building the world's first operational AESA fighter radar, Raytheon has continuously advanced its AESA technology. More than 300 AESA radar systems have been delivered by Raytheon to customers for multiple platforms worldwide, and have been in service for more than 250,000 operational flight hours.
"Raytheon's AESA radars continue to set the industry standard for performance and reliability," said Mark Kula, vice president, Tactical Airborne Systems, Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems. "Our solid bookings in 2011 attest to this fact, and we expect to see continued growth in this area."

Seoul places $600m order for 20 FA-50s
South Korea has placed a $600 million order with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) for 20 examples of the FA-50 attack variant of the T-50 advanced jet trainer.
KAI said that under the deal it will deliver the aircraft from 2013 to 2014. Seoul could acquire a total of 60 to 150 FA-50s to replace its fleet of more than 150 Northrop F-5s.
The FA-50 is the most advanced variant of the T-50. It will have the Link 16 tactical data link, as well as an Elta Systems EL/M-2032 pulse doppler radar.
Northrop Grumman and Raytheon have said the FA-50 is a candidate for their respective active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars developed for the Lockheed Martin F-16. If the FA-50 does get an AESA radar, it is likely to be the same one chosen for the eventual F-16 radar upgrade for the US Air Force and Republic of Korea Air Force.
The FA-50 is the most advanced variant of KAI's T-50 Golden Eagle
The FA-50 also has a radar warning recover and a night vision imaging system. It is capable of carrying 4,500kg (9,920lb) of weapons, including the Boeing Joint Direct Attack Munition and Textron CBU-97 Sensor Fused Weapon. Like the TA-50, it also has a 20mm cannon and can carry air-to-air missiles.
Aside from the original T-50 and FA-50, KAI has also produced the T-50B enhanced manoeuvrability aerobatic variant and armed TA-50. All of these are powered by a single General Electric F404 engine.
Separately, Seoul is expected to issue a request for proposals in February for its F-X III competition to replace 60 McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantoms. The contenders are the Boeing F-15 Silent Eagle, Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-35 and Sukhoi PAK FA.
Industry observers have said Japan's recent selection of the F-35 for its 42 aircraft F-X fighter requirement will enhance the type's chances in South Korea as well.

South Korea looking to buy Israel's Iron Dome aerial defense system
In wake of IAF's recommendation to acquire new training jets from Italy, South Korea sweetens terms of counteroffer.
South Korea has offered to buy a significant quantity of Israeli-made weapons and defense systems, including the anti-rocket Iron Dome system, if Israel agrees to purchase South Korean fighter jets.
The Israel Air Force is looking to replace its aging fleet of American-made A-4 Skyhawk jets, which are used to train fighter pilots. The two alternatives being considered are the Korean-made T-50 Golden Eagle and Italy's M-346 Master.
The defense industries of South Korea and Italy are locked in a fierce competition for the contract, worth approximately $1 billion. Last week, the Israel Air Force recommended purchasing the Italian planes.
The final decision, however, will be made by the Defense Ministry, and one of the considerations which will be taken into account is the value of reciprocal deals with Israel's defense industry.
Italy has proposed a reciprocal deal, under which it would purchase some $1 billion of defense equipment, including satellites, from Israel.
In response, Korea proposed a deal potentially worth $1.6 billion, which would include the purchase of Israeli-made radar systems, as well as contracts for upgrading helicopters and Hercules aircraft.
In recent weeks, the South Korean Defense Procurement Agency made an additional offer. While the new offer does not specify a price, it does include a number of additional deals, including the Iron Dome system.
The new offer also includes cooperation on a number of other projects, including the conversion of refueling jets, development of a Korean-made fighter jet and a helicopter and satellites.
A final decision on the deal is expected within the next few weeks.

S. Korean Air Force takes part in U.S.-led combat exercise SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Yonhap) - The South Korean Air Force is taking part in a U.S.-led, multinational aerial combat exercise this month, officials said Wednesday.
Six F-15K fighter jets have been training with the U.S. and Saudi Arabian air forces in the Red Flag exercise. It began last Sunday and will continue until Feb. 4 at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, officials said.
The exercise will include simulated air interdiction drills, with U.S. fighter aircraft as enemy planes, and live-fire drills using laser guided bombs and satellite-guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs), officials said.
"The exercise will help enhance our pilots' capabilities to execute combined operations," said Col. Yoon Je-hoon, the head of the South Korean delegation. "Our participation in Red Flag further cements the strong alliance between South Korea and the U.S. and demonstrates our strong joint aerial defense."
South Korea is participating in Red Flag for the first time since 2008. The exercise began in 1975, and South Korea has also taken part in 1979, 1980, 1983, 1990 and 1992.
Allies of the U.S. participate in Red Flag to train their pilots for real combat situations and to strengthen their joint operational capabilities with the U.S.

Sukhoi Fifth Generation Fighter Not to Bid in South Korea’s Aircraft Tender
Russia’s chief military aircraft producer had opted not to take part in South Korea’s largest-ever arms tender worth $7.3 billion for new fighter aircrafts , The Korea Times reported today.
The winner of the FX-III tender will supply South Korea’s Air Force with 60 advanced fighter jets with stealth capabilities.
A spokesman for South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), said, “No Russian firm submitted an application to attend the program’s explanatory session, which was a prerequisite to participate, by the Friday registration deadline”.
Sukhoi was earlier listed as one of the four contenders for the FX-III project with it’s T-50 PAK-FA Stealth Fighter, according to DAPA. The Sukhoi was up against American manufacturers Boeing, offering the F-15SE Silent Eagle, Lockheed Martin with the F-35 Lightning II and the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS)’s Eurofighter Typhoon.
Sukhoi pulled out of the race because it had not sought approval from the Russian government and the local trade mission, officials at the Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in Korea said.

Boeing to test F-15SE fighter jet for South Korea
Boeing is scheduled to conduct a series of ground, wind-tunnel and flight tests on new F-15 Silent Eagle (F-15SE) systems as part of South Korea's F-X III contract.
Boeing vice-president for sales Howard Berry said that the wind-tunnel tests on a scale model of the F-15SE will start in March or April. The model used will include weapons bays to assess the aerodynamic performance from various angles for the Silent Eagle's proposed canted vertical tails.
The weapon bays are the modified conformal fuel tanks, which allow the F-15 to store weapons internally and lower the aircraft's radar profile; the bays themselves have already undergone testing, as reported by Flightglobal.
Other key elements of the F-15SE include radar cross-section (RCS) reductions, aerodynamic improvements, as well as advanced avionics enhancements.
It is fitted with advanced cockpit systems, a digital electronic warfare system and sensors. Flight testing will be carried out in the fourth quarter of 2012 or early 2013, Berry added.
The Silent Eagle was originally designed with tails canted at 15º as a stealth technique, enabling the aircraft to bank up to 15º on either side, without presenting a 90º angle to airborne radars and also to improve the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft.
Scheduled tests are aimed to prepare the Silent Eagle to be ready for operations with South Korea from 2016. The nation is likely to release a request for proposals for the F-X III requirements following a contract, which will be awarded in October 2012 for up to 62 aircraft.
The Boeing-built F-15E dual-role fighter is the latest version of the Eagle, a Mach 2.5-class twin-engine fighter. Currently, more than 1,500 F-15s are in service with the US, Israel, Japan and Saudi Arabia, including more than 220 F-15E fighters.
The fifth-generation combat aircraft, if selected against Eurofighter Typhoon and the Lockheed Martin F-35, will replace the aging South Korean Air Force fighter jet fleet.
