Elbit Systems lands helmet-mounted display deal with South Korea

Elbit Systems has received a contract to supply advanced helmet-mounted display systems for the South Korean army's Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) programme.

Under the deal, Elbit will supply prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries with equipment for its ongoing development effort, which is expected to lead to the manufacture of up to 250 tactical transport helicopters. The Israeli company's initial contract covers those development aircraft due to be delivered in 2009-10, but it believes the agreement could lead to follow-on orders to equip the entire KUH fleet and additional military rotorcraft.

"We believe this selection will lead to further head-up display projects in South Korea and worldwide," says Yoram Shmuely, co-general manager of Elbit's Aerospace Division.

Elbit says its helmet-mounted display systems enable helicopter pilots to fly with their "head out of the cockpit", boosting situational awareness and safety by projecting essential flight data, plus navigation waypoints and threat data into their line of sight.

South Korea Receives First Batch of F-15K Fighters

The South Korean Air Force has received the first batch of three F-15K fighter jets from Boeing under the second-phase F-X fighter acquisition programme.
Boeing delivered the high-end multirole F-15K aircraft at the 11th Fighter Wing based in Daegu, according to the Korea Herald.
The F-15Ks, worth $100m, are capable of air-to-ground, air-to-air and air-to-sea missions, in day, night and any weather condition.
It can fly at a maximum speed of Mach 2.3 with an operational radius of 1,800km.
The F-15K model received under the second-phase project is equipped with a PW-229 engine.
Boeing will deliver 21 F-15K fighter aircraft by March 2012 to the air force, under the second phase project signed in May 2008.

South Korean Navy Focuses on Littoral Warfare
The South Korean Navy (ROK) is focusing on its operational and procurement plans for coastal defence readiness against North Korean invasion, according to the navy chief.
Admiral Kim Sung-Chan said the navy would draw up new tactics and strategies focused on preventing North Korean provocation.
"For instance, the navy will operate search and attack units consisting of two patrol ships in the West Sea," he said.
The navy has plans to acquire naval defence systems such as anti-submarine warfare (ASW) equipment, minesweepers, anti-submarine helicopters and sonar systems, according to the Korean Times.
The ROK Navy built its open-seas capability by launching the 14,000t Dokdo landing platform helicopter, 7,600t KDX-III Aegis destroyers, 1,800t Type-214 submarines and 450t PKG class guided-missile boats.
The navy also launched its first squadron led by an Aegis destroyer, the KDX-III destroyer, and three 4,500t KDX-II destroyers, and has plans to inaugurate one more squadron later this year.

DAEWOO SHIPBUILDING WINS ORDER TO BUILD S.KOREAN NAVY SUB

SEOUL, Sep 20, 2010 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (KSE:042660), South Korea's second-largest shipbuilder, said Monday that it has won an order to build a submarine for the South Korean [color:d5fb=blue !important][color:d5fb=blue !important]navy.
The 1,800-ton submarine will be delivered by 2016, the company said in a regulatory filing.
The company didn't provide the value of the order.
So far, Daewoo Shipbuilding has built nine submarines for the Navy. It is also building another submarine.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., le 2è plus important chantier naval de Corée du Sud, a annoncé lundi qu’il avait remporté une commande pour la construction d’un sous-marin pour la marine de Corée du Sud.

Le sous-marin d’un déplacement de 1.800 t sera livré en 2016.
La compagnie n’a pas précisé le montant de la commande.
Pour l’instant, Daewoo Shipbuilding a déjà construit 9 sous-marins pour la marine sud-coréenne et en construit actuellement un autre.

Hyundai Wins Next-Generation South Korean Frigates Deal
The South Korean Government has awarded a contract to Hyundai to build the country's next-generation frigates.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said the new ships would be equipped with improved anti-ship, anti-air and anti-submarine capabilities.
The new frigates will replace the aging fleet of Ulsan Class frigates and the Pohang Class patrol combat corvettes, which are currently in service.
A formal contract will be signed by the end of 2010, and the first ship will be delivered to the navy in 2014

Max Thunder roars at Kwangju

Flight sorties consisting of integrated U.S. and ROK Air Force aircraft and Airmen began on October 18 as the focal point of Max Thunder 10-02.

Max Thunder, a bilateral training exercise designed to demonstrate interoperability between U.S. and ROK military forces on the peninsula, kicked off Oct. 15 as more than 600 U.S. and ROK Airmen and 37 aircraft deployed here to execute and sustain flight operations.
During a mass in-brief at the base theater Oct. 15, Col. Rodney Petithomme, 7th Air Force, said the close relationship between the U.S. and ROK Air Forces was very unique. "This exercise is another opportunity to increase interoperability and build on that relationship, so we can make each other better," he said.
The large-scale exercise replicates the scenarios and planning cycles of RED FLAG Nellis and provides invaluable large-force employment training for U.S. and ROK military forces, according to 7th Air Force.
Exercise missions are comprised of scenarios where combined flight formations engage in air warfare against unexpected hostile air provocation and perform tactical bombardments on targets, according to a ROK Air Force news release. U.S. Air Force F-16 aircraft from Osan and Kunsan Air Bases are flying with ROK Air Force KF-16s, F-15Ks, and F-4Es from Daegu, Cheongju and Seosan Air Bases.
This year's Max Thunder is also the first to feature the 18th Aggressor Squadron from Eielson Air Base, Alaska, as the primary "enemy threat."
Capt. Monessa Catuncan, 80th Fighter Squadron pilot, said, "Working with the 18th Aggressors gives us a great opportunity to fight 'against' them in a large force exercise, really doesn't happen very often."
"Having the opportunity to fly with the experts of enemy tactics gives us some very effective training against some of the threats that we don't quite replicate as often as they do," she said, after flying her first sortie here.
"Combining forces definitely makes sure we get the most highly effective training we can," said the captain. "This type of exercise is not only preparing us for air-to-air combat, but also dropping bombs, meeting the enemy out in the air, and making sure we're all combining forces together and getting the mission objective complete."
"Putting it all together and seeing almost 30 aircraft flying together at the same time, fighting and working together as one big push is an experience that you won't get very often, and something I haven't seen very often in my Air Force career," said Captain Catuncan.
Lt. Col. James Wilkerson, 80th FS commander, who also flew during the initial Oct. 18 sortie, said the training was "unbelievable."
"We always talk about fighting together with the RoKAF, though we never really execute it to this degree. Not only are we briefing together but we're debriefing as well and we're getting some unbelievable lessons learned about how to integrate our packages better and how to operate better."
"This is an unbelievable opportunity - it's only a 40-mile deployment for the folks at Kunsan, but whether its 40 miles or 400, it really doesn't matter," said the colonel. "We've still taken our entire aviation package and moved it south to try to really see if we can take the fight north from another level."
The training also supports one of the second tenants at the 8th Fighter Wing, he said - to accept follow-on forces.
"Follow-on forces would definitely operate out of Kwangju and we're proving we can do that on a daily basis," said Colonel Wilkerson. "That's really what this exercise is about."

Max Thunder 10-02 continues through Oct. 22.

18th AGRS makes first deployment to ROK

Kwangju Air Base, Republic of Korea, is hosting the fourth annual MAX THUNDER exercise, a bi-lateral training exercise with ROK military forces.

The exercise will occur in western airspace over the Korean Peninsula between ROK and U.S. allied air forces.
Republic of Korea Air Force aircrew members will train alongside U.S. Air Force aircrew during this exercise which employs scenarios comparable to RED FLAG at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.
According to base officials, although MAX THUNDER will not have the same airspace, ranges and threat replication capabilities like those at RED FLAG, USAF and RoKAF Airmen will receive a rigorous training experience.
This year's exercise will feature the 18th Aggressor Squadron from Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, in their first deployment to the ROK, as the primary "enemy threat."

"Inter-operability with U.S. and Allied forces versus a highly trained threat flying dissimilar aircraft enables our aircrew members to be battle-ready for a myriad of potential threats," said Capt. Ryan P. Noonan, 18th Aggressor Squadron chief of standards and evaluations.
Captain Noonan also explained how the exercise will allow side-by-side mission planning and integrated air operations practice in large-force employment scenarios to continue the evolution into a seamlessly united fighting force. Upon termination of the exercise, the U.S. and ROK aircrews will participate in detailed debriefs where the tactical lessons are pulled from the overall engagement.
The 18th Aggressor Squadron, has experience playing a role as Red Aggressor during various USAF exercises. They usually practice the tactics and maneuvers of MIG and Sukhoi and adapt these to actual exercises.
U.S. Air Force F-16s from Osan and Kunsan Air Bases with ROKAF KF-16s, F-15Ks, and F-4Es will "engage" the aggressors, painted to resemble MIG and Sukhoi fighter planes., during the week-long exercise.
"Exercises like MAX THUNDER and RED FLAG are important to the readiness of the USAF and our allies to ensure we are battle-ready and trained for combined air operations," said Lt. Col. Andy Hansen, 18th Aggressor Squadron commander. "The ROK and U.S. alliance is more than military; it is a comprehensive partnership that promotes freedom and democracy in this region and the world."

The South Korean MoD an additional $307 million from the National Assembly on Nov. 29 to acquire weapons to defend four islands in the western waters of the peninsula over the next two years.

The proposal comes after North Korea's deadly Nov. 23 artillery atack of one of the islands.

MARIETTA, Ga., December 2nd, 2010 — Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has signed a contract with the Republic of Korea to provide the nation four C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.
Korea’s new Super Hercules will be the longer fuselage or “stretched” combat delivery variant. Deliveries will be in 2014 and the contract also contains a two-year support program including aircrew and maintenance training. Korea joins 14 other nations that have selected the proven C 130J.
“Because it is a legacy C-130 operator, the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) is able to take advantage of common spares, support equipment and a sound knowledge of the C-130 to reduce costs and reach full operational capability as soon as possible,” said Jim Grant, Lockheed Martin vice president for Air Mobility and Special Operations Forces Programs. “As an experienced C-130 operator, Korea recognizes the unmatched capability that this new aircraft brings to so many missions.”
The C-130J generates greater operational efficiency than older C-130s — such as Korea’s current H models — by flying further, faster, with more payload and higher reliability. Additionally, the C-130J only requires three crew members for most missions, so fewer flight crew members are exposed to potential threats. C-130Js are used daily for troop and equipment re-supply via ground delivery and airdrop, for air-to-air refueling, ground refueling and humanitarian relief.
Lockheed Martin and Korea have been industrial partners for more than 20 years, beginning with the F-16 Peace Bridge program in the late 1980s. Korea Aerospace Industries began manufacturing center fuselages for F-16s, which evolved into licensed production of F 16s for the ROKAF. The ROKAF T-50 Golden Eagle was developed through collaboration between Korea Aerospace Industries and Lockheed Martin.

Boeing Delivers 3 More F-15K Slam Eagles to Republic of Korea




DAEGU AIR BASE, Republic of Korea, Dec. 7, 2010 — Boeing [NYSE: BA] on Nov. 8 delivered three F-15K Slam Eagles to the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) at Daegu Air Base. The company delivered the first three of 21 F-15Ks it is producing under the Next Fighter II contract to the ROKAF in September. The remaining 15 aircraft will be delivered through March 2012.
“Boeing is honored to deliver these highly advanced fighters to the ROKAF,” said Roger Besancenez, Boeing F-15 Program vice president. “We will continue to work closely with our ROKAF customers to prepare for upcoming deliveries that will provide them with superior air combat capability, as we remain committed to our goal of completing the deliveries on budget and on schedule, as promised.”
Six of the new F-15K Slam Eagles are scheduled to participate in an advanced aerial combat training exercise at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., in late 2011.
The F-15K is an advanced variant of the combat-proven F-15E. Equipped with the latest technological upgrades, it is extremely capable, survivable and maintainable. The aircraft’s service life is planned through 2040, with technology insertions and upgrades throughout its life cycle. Boeing completed delivery of 40 Next Fighter I F-15K aircraft to the ROKAF in October 2008.

Northrop Grumman is proposing a mechanically scanned radar for an F-16 upgrade programme in South Korea, marking a shift in its strategy for the emerging requirement.

The company had previously been focused on selling a new active electronically scanned array named the scaleable agile beam radar (SABR). But now, Northrop believes the Republic of Korea Air Force's needs instead call for its mechanically scanned APG-68(V)9 design.

"I think the (V)9 would suit their purposes really well," says Dave Wallace, Northrop's manager for F-16 sensor programmes. Similar to the AESA-based SABR, the design provides both synthetic aperture radar (SAR) maps and ground moving target indication imagery, which are key capabilities for launching attacks on ground targets.

Mechanically scanned arrays have lost favour due to the introduction of AESA radars over the last decade. For example, the United Arab Emirates launched the Northrop APG-80 agile beam radar with its Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 60 fighters.

"AESA is the buzz phrase. It is very reliable. It does more than you can get with a mechanically scanned radar," Wallace says. "That said, the performance I've observed on the APG-68(V)9 is very good." Greece and Israel jointly launched the (V)9 upgrade programme about a decade ago.

Northrop's proposal now faces competition from the AESA-based Raytheon advanced combat radar, or RACR.

Cobham antennas and avionics for S.Korean military helicopter

Cobham will provide antennas and avionics for the indigenous Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH), under a multi-million pound long term agreement with the manufacturer, Korean Aerospace Industries Ltd.

Cobham Antenna Systems, part of the Cobham Defence Systems Division, will supply a suite of communications and navigation antennas manufactured in the UK alongside a navigation transceiver manufactured in the US by sister Division Cobham Avionics and Surveillance.

Developed in conjunction with Eurocopter, the twin engined KUH “Surion” will be manufactured in Sacheon, South Korea. It will carry two pilots and up to 16 troops, with a maximum takeoff weight of 8700kg. South Korea plans to produce 245 over the next decade to replace aging UH-1H and MD 500 helicopters.

KAI’s selection of Cobham follows a successful multi-year trials programme and further enhances a long standing relationship which has already seen the Company’s equipment selected for KAI’s KT-1 turboprop trainer and T-50 supersonic advanced jet trainer/fighter, a Cobham press release said.

South Korea Holds Anti-Submarine Drills

The South Korean Navy has begun new three-day anti-submarine exercises in the Sea of Japan near the heavily armed border a month after deadly North Korean artillery attacks.
The country had planned to conduct only 47 drills this year, but will conduct one more due to the continuing tension with North Korea.
Six naval ships and anti-submarine helicopters will be participating in the drills, aimed at demonstrating the South Korean military's readiness for any surprise attacks.
The South Korean Army and Air Force will also hold joint firing drills involving 800 troops, F-15K and KF-16 jet fighters, K-1 tanks, AH-1S attack helicopters and K-9 self-propelled guns.

Mais je penses que c'est du bluf,les Nord coréen ne sont aussi bete que ca, je penses.C'est leur vie et celle de leur descendant ainsi que ceux des sud coréens si le nord attaque le sud nucléairement et que les US ripostent avec la meme arme mais de plus grande envergure.

Jeudi dernier, l’armée sud-coréenne a terminé en 40 minutes les exercices militaires accompagnés de tirs d’entraînement qu'elle menait à proximité de la frontière nord-coréenne. Les exercices d'une durée réduite se sont déroulés près de la ville de Pocheon situé à 30 km au sud de la zone démilitarisée séparant le Nord et le Sud.



Selon le commandement militaire de la Corée du Sud, 800 militaires ont pris part aux exercices, ainsi que six avions de combat, des hélicoptères, des systèmes de missiles, des chars et des équipes munies des systèmes de missiles antichars. Au total, plus de 100 différents types d’armes ont été utilisés.



Malgré la rapidité des manœuvres d’entraînement, les militaires sud-coréens les ont qualifiés des plus grands exercices de l’histoire du pays du point de vue d’interaction entre les forces terrestres et l’armée de l’air.




Au total, la Corée du Sud a organisé 47 exercices militaires en 2010.




La chaîne de télévision sud-coréenne YTN a annoncé le début des exercices jeudi à 08H00, heure de Moscou, mais par la suite le ministère de la Défense du pays a précisé que les exercices avaient commencé avec un retard de 45 minutes. Sur la photo: le président sud-coréen Lee Myung-bak.




La situation dans la péninsule coréenne reste explosive après le duel d’artillerie survenu le 23 novembre entre les deux Corées aux alentours de l’île de Yeonpyeong, en mer Jaune. Les tirs d’artillerie ont fait des victimes, notamment parmi les civils vivant sur l’île.
Lundi dernier, en dépit des appels de la Russie à s’abstenir de ces exercices, les militaires sud-coréens ont effectué des tirs d’entraînement en mer, à proximité de l’île de Yeonpyeong.
L'agence officielle nord-coréenne KCNA a déclaré par la suite que les autorités nord-coréennes avaient estimé superflu de "réagir à chaque provocation militaire", bien qu’auparavant elles aient menacé de recourir à des mesures de rétorsion sévères face aux exercices de Séoul.

Ce pays n'a aucune envie de combattre, ni de se déféndre, il savent que même une guerre à l'arme conventionnelle, sans nucléaire, fera un million de victime, ils ont commis la bétise de bâtir leur capitale, l'une des villes les plus dense de la planète, à qualques dixaines de km des territoires ennemis... Une geurre même conventionnelle et même si les sud coréens triophent, se transformera en un grand carnage de sud coréens, les nord coréens n'ont pas grand chose à perdre, c'est un pays de paysans affamés.
