Ex Cope Tiger 2011 concludes on successful note
This year's Exercise Cope Tiger - an annual trilateral air exercise - saw more than a hundred military aircraft and 34 Ground-based Air Defence (GBAD) systems operating in tight concert as the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) and United States Air Force gathered for the second phase of the exercise held at Korat Air Base, Thailand from 14 to 25 Mar. The exercise also marked the inaugural participation of the RSAF's G550-Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft in an overseas training exercise. The first G550-AEW aircraft was delivered to the RSAF in February 2009 to replace the ageing E2C Hawkeye AEW. "The exercise provided an excellent platform to validate our procedures as we learnt to interoperate with our foreign counterparts in a different environment and operational setting," said Captain (CPT) Toh Su Sin, an Air Warfare Officer in 111 Squadron, which operates the G550-AEW aircraft. Equipped with a sophisticated mission suite that includes an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, the G550-AEWs have a detection range of more than 200 nautical miles. Exercise Cope Tiger 2011 started with a command post exercise held at Paya Lebar Air Base in Singapore from 14 to 16 Dec last year before moving on to the second phase, the flying training exercise, in Thailand. "The exercise has been a very fruitful and successful one for the RSAF. Its realistic scenarios gave us an excellent opportunity to hone our air combat readiness and competencies, both at the planning and execution levels," said Colonel (COL) Neo Hong Keat, RSAF exercise director. "The opportunity to work alongside the other two countries also provided a great platform for cross-learning and sharing." Apart from professional exchanges, exercise participants such as F-16C/D fighter pilot Lieutenant (LTA) Low Siyuan also valued the chance to interact with his foreign counterparts. "It is good to be able to work so closely with one another and exchange lessons freely and I've learnt a lot from my counterparts," said LTA Low. "Through the exercise, I have forged many friendships with others in the RSAF and the US Air Force," he added. This was something which the RTAF exercise director Group Captain Thawonwat Chantanakom also spoke of: "The working relationships and friendships that our airmen and crew have built up over the years have made working together a smooth process. I know that we can fall in with our counterparts and be a much more effective fighting unit, than if we had never worked together." "Each air force brings to the table confidence and the abilities of weapon employment which we can learn from, and vice-versa. This allows the USAF to work alongside highly professional air force personnel from the RSAF and RTAF, and benchmark our methodologies in order to improve on them," agreed COL Robert Huston, USAF exercise director. As part of this year's exercise, the participants also provided basic health and dental services to the local community in Korat in a one-day joint socio-civic programme. An eight-member medical personnel led by CPT (Dr) Jocelyn Ong worked together with their RTAF and USAF counterparts to provide basic health and dental care to the communities at Korat . More than 2,300 personnel from the participating forces took part in Ex Cope Tiger 2011, which is the 17th in the series. It formally concluded on 25 Mar with a closing ceremony officiated by the three exercise directors from the RSAF, RTAF and USAF.

SOURCE:Flight International Singapore deploys Fokker 50 maritime patrol aircraft to Gulf of Aden By Greg Waldron
Singapore has sent one of its Fokker 50 maritime patrol aircraft to assist international counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, marking its first overseas deployment of the type.
For the next three months the Republic of Singapore Air Force aircraft and a 38-strong detachment will be based in Djibouti operating under Combined Task Force 151, Singapore's defence ministry says.
"The F50 MPA will conduct maritime air surveillance to provide CTF-151 with an enhanced sea situation picture of the Gulf of Aden, as well as perform coordinated search operations to locate and investigate suspicious vessels," says the ministry. "The detachment comprises air, ground and communications support crew, as well as logistics personnel."
CTF-151 is a multinational force operating to counter piracy in the Gulf of Aden and off the east coast of Africa.

Alenia Aermacchi finalises contracts with ST Aerospace in support of Singapore's M-346 fleet
Logistic support contracts worth about EUR 170 million
Alenia Aermacchi – a company of Finmeccanica’s Aeronautics Sector led by Alenia Aeronautica – has finalised with ST Aerospace the logistics support contracts for the 12 M-346 trainers sold at the end of September 2010 in the context of the Fighter Wings Course programme of the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
The two contracts are expected to generate total sales in the range of EUR 170 million.
The first contract (Supply Chain Management) envisages the joint management of the M-346 suppliers by Alenia Aermacchi and ST Aerospace (after-sales support, including spare parts provisioning, repair and overhaul services) with sharing of risks, sales and profits between the two Companies.
The other contract (Operations & Support) concerns instead the supply by Alenia Aermacchi of engineering support, programme/contract management and field support services.
Alenia Aeronautica’s CEO and Responsible for Finmeccanica’s Aeronautics Sector has commented: "The two contracts on the logistics support of the 12 M-346 for Singapore confirm the success of the high-technology Italian industry and the primacy at international level of this aircraft and of its integrated training system. Once again we are particularly proud for the positive relationship with both the Republic of Singapore Air Force, known to be one of the most sophisticated Air Forces in the world, and our industrial counterpart, ST Aerospace."

Battalion Coastal Hook Exercise- Singapore
Spoiler:
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) conducted a readiness exercise on 2 August 2011. Held at Pulau Sudong, the exercise involved troops from 1st Guards Battalion conducting a battalion coastal hook, supported by elements from the Army, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)
Amid the rumbling sounds of armoured vehicles and gunfire, Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) troops and M113 Armoured Personnel Carriers disembarked swiftly from a fleet of fast crafts at the coast and advanced steadily inland. They did this as F-16 fighter aircraft and Apache attack helicopters thundered across the sky simultaneously to provide fire support.
The battalion-level coastal hook operation took place on 2 Aug at Pulau Sudong, an island off the southern coast of Singapore. It saw about 450 soldiers, sailors and airmen work together to recapture the island in a scenario where it had been seized by an enemy force.
The 1st Guards Battalion troops went on to repossess the airstrip located in the centre of the island and receive logistics supplies via a Super Puma helicopter, which was then used to evacuate casualties to the mainland.

The Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN's) first Archer-class submarine, RSS Archer, arrived at Changi Naval Base (CNB) from Sweden earlier today. Chief of Navy, Rear-Admiral Ng Chee Peng, and other senior naval officers were present at CNB to witness its return.
Launched in Karlskrona, Sweden on 16 Jun 2009, RSS Archer is one of two ex-Royal Swedish Navy Vaastergotland-class submarines acquired by Singapore in 2005. RSS Archer has been comprehensively upgraded, refurbished and tropicalised to ensure its suitability for operations in local conditions. Crew members of RSS Archer have also undergone extensive training in Sweden since 2007 to acquire the skillsets needed to operate and maintain the submarine.
RSS Archer will join 171 Squadron, under the RSN's Fleet Command, to enhance the RSN's capability to secure the seaward defence of Singapore and protect our vital sea lines of communication.

First HIMARS battery operational
Pinpoint accuracy over distances as long as 70 kilometres. This is just one of the capabilities which the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) brings to the table.
On 5 Sep, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officially welcomed the HIMARS into its fold with a ceremony to mark its commissioning and the operationalisation of the first HIMARS battery at Khatib Camp.
During the ceremony, Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen saw a demonstration of the deployment and operation of the HIMARS as part of a networked force that included other land platforms.
In his speech, Dr Ng said: "The successful induction of the HIMARS reflects well on the ability of the SAF to respond decisively to new challenges and changing circumstances in its operational environment."
Equipped with the Battlefield Management System (BMS), the HIMARS is fully connected to its command headquarters and Strike Observer Mission Teams on the ground. Other SAF air and land platforms, such as fighter aircraft and infantry fighting vehicles, are also connected via the BMS.
With the enhanced situational awareness and transmission of critical battlefield information provided by the BMS, the HIMARS can quickly respond to calls for fire and deliver precision fire on targets.
Deadly accurate and mobile, each HIMARS launcher can dispatch its six rockets within 45 seconds to targets 70km away with an accuracy of 10 metres. Its 6.6 litre turbo-charged diesel engine powers the almost 16-ton behemoth to a top speed of 94kmh.
"With its long range and speed, the HIMARS can stay well behind the front line. When opposing forces open fire, we are able to stay well out of its range but yet still be able to deliver accurate counter-fire." explained Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Koh, Commanding Officer, 23rd Battalion Singapore Artillery (23 SA).
While the Singapore Army's 3rd Generation transformation leverages on technology that provides superior weaponry and reduces reliance on manpower, it translates into heavier responsibilities for the three-man crew which operates each HIMARS launcher. "It is ultimately the professionalism and commitment of our people that will translate the latest weapon systems into effective capabilities," said Dr Ng.
This message was not lost on each of the crew members who work as a tightly integrated team to operate the HIMARS. "When the fire mission comes down, all three of us are very independent and we know exactly what to do," said Full-time National Serviceman 3rd Sergeant Daniel Tan, citing the comprehensive training which the Battery has undergone in the past 12 months.
The SAF took delivery of the HIMARS in July last year, and conducted its inaugural battery live firing in November 2010 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, US.
The HIMARS, which is operated by Bravo Battery of 23 SA, provides artillery forces with precision fire power, enhanced mobility and advanced networking capabilities.
Dr Ng affixing the Artillery formation emblem onto the HIMARS. With him is Chief of Artillery Colonel Tan Chong Lee.
The HIMARS which carries a load of six rockets, is manned by a lean three-man crew comprising a detachment commander, a gunner and a driver.

The SAF Conducts Live-firing Exercise in the US The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is conducting a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) live-firing exercise, code-named Daring Warrior, from 21 October to 7 November 2011, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, USA. The exercise involved 234 personnel from the Headquarters, Singapore Artillery, Headquarters 3rd Division Artillery and 23rd Battalion, Singapore Artillery as well as the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).
In conjunction with Exercise Daring Warrior, the SAF and the US Army conducted a bilateral air-land integrated live-firing exercise, involving US personnel from the 214th Fires Brigade Headquarters, as well as 1-14th and 2-5th Field Artillery. The two-day bilateral exercise, which ended today, involved the SAF's HIMARS and Apache AH-64Ds helicopters. The US also participated with their HIMARS, F-16 and F-18 fighter aircraft, as well as Ground Liaison and Targeting teams.
The Commander of the SAF Training and Doctrine Command Brigadier-General (BG) Lim Hock Yu and the Commanding General of the US Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill Major-General (MG) David Halverson were present to witness the exercise. Highlighting the value of Exercise Daring Warrior, BG Lim said, "Exercise Daring Warrior provides an excellent opportunity for the SAF to maintain the operational capabilities of its HIMARS and to conduct air-land integration training. It also opens up a channel for professional and operational exchanges between the SAF and the US Army." Likewise, MG Halverson added that "the exercise was a great environment for the soldiers to operate in a joint training situation". In addition, he said, "As we train together to develop proficiencies and certifications, we are also working to take the training to the next level. We have a great coalition team with the military forces of Singapore."
Exercise Daring Warrior 2011 is the second HIMARS live-firing exercise conducted since the SAF took delivery of the HIMARS in July 2010. The SAF and the US Army also conducted a joint live-firing exercise during the previous Exercise Daring Warrior, in November 2010. Training in the US enables the SAF to build up its operational capabilities and readiness. It also facilitates sharing of knowledge between the two armed forces. The US' support for the SAF's training in the US reflects the long-standing and excellent defence relationship between the two countries.
