China to Build Maintenance Centre in Thailand

China is moving forward with plans to build a repair and maintenance centre in Thailand, following October’s delivery of VT4 main battle tanks. This will create a more flexible solution for the maintenance of Chinese weapons in Thailand.

The initial plan to build this facility was started by Chinese technicians and engineers sent to Thailand. Following delivery the first batch of VT4s by Norinco, a total of 437 different spare parts were despatched for initial maintenance as part of a one-year deal, as well as the need to guarantee spares, technical service and repair support for 25+ years.

The process will be to first stock spare parts for the VT4s and VN1 8x8 APCs, as well as spares for other military hardware from China in the future.

Since 1987, when the Thai military started procuring lower-cost Chinese weaponry, it has been routinely difficult to obtain spare parts and to perform maintenance. This forced some systems temporarily out of service.

To resolve these issues after Thailand ordered and imported a lot of military hardware from China in the past five years, China offered the option of establishing such a joint military facility in Thailand. A local repair and maintenance centre will benefit equipment support in the future.

Apart from setting up the centre, some technologies will be transferred too. This is a key component of Chinese arms sales to Thailand as it will eventually enhance self-reliance.

Earlier, Ukraine, who supplied BTR-3E1s and Oplot-M tanks to Thailand, also reached an agreement to build a military production facility there.

Deputy Minister of Defence Gen Udomdej Sitabutr commented, ‘Cooperation with an allied country to build a military production facility is essential because, in the future, when some military hardware from that country is out of service, equipment will need to be repaired and maintained. If that can be done by ourselves, or some key spare parts can be built ourselves, then we can save a lot of budget to solve those issues.’

BANGKOK (Thailand)/TASS/. Russia signed a contract with Thailand in September on the delivery of two Mil Mi-17V-5 helicopters, Deputy Director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation Mikhail Petukhov told TASS on Tuesday.

The defense official is heading the Russian delegation at the Defense & Security 2017 arms show in Bangkok.

"A contract was signed in September 2017 on the delivery of two Mi-17V-5 helicopters in the interests of the Royal Thai Army. Further on, the talk can be about a batch of rotorcraft," Petukhov said.

Russia and Thailand also signed an inter-governmental agreement in September on military and technical cooperation, he added.

Mi-8MTV-5/Mi-17V-5 helicopters are designed to transport passengers and cargoes and can be used to conduct rescue operations and carry armament.

Russia’s state arms seller Rosoboronexport has offered Kamov Ka-52 and Mi-35M rotorcraft for a tender announced by Thailand for the purchase of attack helicopters, Petukhov said.

"The Thai side announced a tender in September for the delivery of attack helicopters. Rosoboronexport is participating in this tender with Ka-52 and Mi-35M helicopters," the defense official said.

Russia intends to participate in all of Thailand’s tenders for the purchase of military products, including naval hardware, he noted.

The Ka-52 ‘Alligator’ reconnaissance and combat helicopter is designed to destroy tanks, armored and non-armored combat vehicles, manpower, helicopters and other hostile aircraft on the frontline and in tactical depth, in any weather conditions and at any time of day or night.

The Mi-35M transport and attack helicopter is designed to destroy the armor and provide fire support for land troops, and also to transport personnel, evacuate the wounded, carry cargoes and perform other missions. The helicopter is fitted with cutting-edge precision weapons and is capable of accomplishing combat missions round the clock and in any weather conditions.

The international Asian Defense & Security 2017 arms show is taking place in Bangkok on November 6-9. The defense exhibition has been held under the patronage of the government and the Defense Ministry of Thailand since 1985, traditionally bringing together the leading producers and customers of weapon systems and military equipment for the ground forces and the navy, aircraft and air defense means.

Speaking at the Defense and Security 2017, Pascal Emler, regional executive export sales of MBDA confirm that the company will deliver the VL MICA to RTA next year.

"The RTA will receive two launchers - down from four - along with one command truck. The system will be working with TRML-3D/32 radar from Airbus. Right now, the system will work stand alone and we are working on the second system to RTA" said Pascal Emler.

VL MICA is designed to work with various radar because the system considers radar only as a sensor. The guidance will be the work of the missile. target data update can be done if necessary and the missile shares the configuration with the air-to-air and ground-to-air version.

"Our missile may cost more, but we do not need the illuminator radar and higher probability of kill which is better than ESSM that need to fire two missiles in the row. So, the over cost is cheaper."

Deliveries of the first Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50 Golden Eagle lead-in fighter trainers to Thailand began on 8 January, South Korean media reported.

Two of the first batch of four T-50TH (Thailand) aircraft have left Seoul for Bangkok as the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) begins the process of replacing its current fleet of Aero L-39 Albatros jet trainers.

Thailand is currently signed up for 12 T-50TH aircraft across two batches of four and eight respectively. Jane’s was told on 17 October 2017 that KAI hoped to begin talks shortly for the four fighters that are outstanding from Thailand’s original requirement of 16, though no word has yet been given as to whether this has yet happened and KAI had not responded to a request for information by the time of publication. It is possible that as many as 18 T-50THs could eventually be procured.

The commencement of deliveries to Thailand comes some months after it was announced in late September 2017 that the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) is to receive an undisclosed additional number of TA-50-variant aircraft from 2019 to add to the more than 70 it already fields.

Further to Thailand and South Korea, all of the Philippines 12 FA-50-variant aircraft have been delivered, and that six of the 24 FA-50s ordered by Iraq have now been handed over to that country. Indonesia has received all of its 16 T-50 aircraft.

Thai Army Boosts Air Defense Missile Capability

The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has displayed the Chinese KS (KaiShan)-1C surface-to-air missile (SAM) system that it has acquired in the past two years. It is also going ahead this year, with the purchase of vertical launch (VL) MICA air defense missile systems from MBDA. Until now, the RTA operated only short-range anti-aircraft guns such as the Oerlikon GDF-007, and man-portable missiles such as the Thales Starstreak.

The KS-1C was developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Cooperation (CASIC) and is the improved version of the KS-1A. It has an increased range, to 70 km from 50 km, and engagement altitude to 27 km from 24 km. The RTA KS-1Cs are fired from twin launch-rails mounted on a Chinese-made 6x6 truck.



The Chinese SAM system is paired with the H-200 phased-array engagement radar, which has detection range of up to 120 km. At the time of development, the H-200 was China’s first phased-array air defense radar, and many likened the display and concept of operation to those of the American Patriot AN/MPQ-53 system. Chinese literature highlighted that the H-200 radar is able to direct six KS-1 missiles to intercept three to six incoming targets.

Unlike the Western-leaning Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF), the RTA has adopted various Chinese equipment, including the WS-1 302 mm multiple rocket launcher and the new VT-4 main battle tank. Perhaps the RTAF will take an interest in China’s UAV systems, which are being heavily marketed for export.

At last year’s Defence and Security Show in Bangkok, Pascal Emler, regional executive export sales for MBDA, said that his company will deliver two truck-mounted VL MICA launchers this year, along with a command truck. But the RTA decided not to buy a second pair of launchers, as originally planned in 2013. MBDA claims that the “fire-and-forget” MICA is the only one in the world capable of being fitted with either a heat-seeking homing head (VL MICA IR) or with an active radar (VL MICA RF).

The Thai MICA firing unit will be paired with an Airbus Defence & Space TRML-3D/32 mobile C-band phased-array radar that has a detection range of up to 200 km.

Under the terms of the contract, the first five tanks were to be delivered to the customer in December 2012, then the date of delivery of the first five tanks to the Thai side was called May 2013. Actually, the first five Oplot-T tanks manufactured under this contract were demonstrated in Kharkiv only on October 15, 2013, sent to Thailand with a declared customs value of $ 4.45 million each on December 20, 2013 and delivered by sea ​​to Thailand (port Sattahip) on February 4, 2014.



The second batch of five Oplot-T tanks was manufactured by the Malyshev Plant by the beginning of 2015 and delivered to Thailand on May 31, 2015. The Royal Thai Marine Corps (RTMC) has signed a contract with Elbit to procure the Israeli company’s 155 mm autonomous truck mounted howitzer system (ATMOS).

The RTMC said in a statement that the contract was signed in late March and features the delivery of six ATMOS systems, which will be built locally by the state-run Weapon Production Centre (WPC).

The contract is valued at USD26 million and provides opportunities for additional units to be procured and built locally if required.

The contract fulfils a long-standing RTMC requirement to augment its existing firepower, which currently includes a mix of ageing Canadian-designed GC-45/GHN-45 155mm howitzers acquired in the 1980s.

A Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) L-39ZA/ART trainer jet crashed onto a golf course in Sam Ngao district near Myanmar border during a training flight on Tuesday afternoon killing its pilot, according to local media reports.

The aircraft was totally destroyed and engulfed in flames after the crash at Bhumibol Dam Golf Course around 3pm. The co-pilot of the aircraft was seriously injured in the crash.

Witnesses saw the plane come down onto the ground, followed by a large fire that made a big column of black smoke. According to the reports, firefighters and rescue workers were rushed to the scene.

The pilot of the aircraft, Sqn Ldr Kroekkiat Suwanno, 36, was found hanging by his parachute in a tree after the crash. He was seriously hurt and later died. Rescue workers used a crane to retrieve his body. The co-pilot, Gp Capt Jirasak Namwongsri, 42, was found alive but seriously injured in his seat. He was rushed to Sam Ngao Hospital.

The aircraft departed from Wing 41 airbase in Chiang Mai, heading to Tak.

L-39ZA/ART is the Thai version of Aero L-39 Albatros, a high-performance two-seat, single-engine jet trainer developed in Czechoslovakia by Aero Vodochody. It is a westernized version, equipped with Israeli avionics from Elbit Systems.

Around 40 of this aircraft was built for the Royal Thai Air Force.

In August 2017, the Thai Government agreed with the F-5 upgrade programme and signed a contract with Elbit worth USD 96 million. The contract implies four full Tigers upgrades while the remaining ten Tigers are only receiving new radars.

Elbit (with Israeli sub-contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems) is leading the upgrade but work is executed by state-owned Thai Aviation Industries (TAI).

UBON RATCHATHANI (TNA) -- The Royal Thai Air Force conducted a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the service of its F-5E/F fighter aircraft and accepted one of the jets after its upgrade.

Air force commander-in-chief ACM Johm Rungswang presided over the ceremony at Wing 21. The ceremony included a Buddhist rite and the air force chief hanging garlands on the aircraft and handing souvenirs to officers working with the aircraft.

The F-5E/F aircraft had built good reputations for the air force and the country because they had been successfully deployed for many important warfare missions and the success resulted from unity among commanders, pilots and relevant officials, ADM Johm said.




One of the 14 F-5E/F aircraft of the air force was upgraded and delivered by Elbis System. The service duration of the upgraded aircraft is extended for 15 years.

10'000 heures de vol pour les Gripen Thaï !



La flotte d’avions de combat Saab JAS-39 C/D Gripne de la Royal Thaï Air Force (RTAF) a atteint les 10 000 heures de vol. Le jalon a été atteint lors de l'exercice international « Pitch Black 2018 ».

Cela fait dix ans que la RTAF a passé la commande pour la première fois pour la livraison d’un premier lot de 6 chasseurs Gripen de Saab, en février 2008. Les livraisons ont commencé vers 2011 pour deux monoplaces (Gripen C) et quatre biplace (Gripen D). Ils en ont ensuite commandé 6 autres en 2010, livrés en deux phases en 2013.

Lors de l’exercice « Pitch Black », la flotte de Gripen de la RTAF a effectué divers exercices et aux côtés de : l’Inde, le Canada, la France, l’Allemagne, l’Indonésie, le Japon, la Malaisie, les Pays-Bas, la Nouvelle-Zélande, les Philippines et Singapour.

L'un des principaux objectifs de l'exercice était d'accroître la préparation au combat des forces aériennes participantes. Plus de 4’000 membres du personnel et 140 aéronefs ont participé à l'exercice.

L'exercice s'est avéré très fructueux pour les pilotes de la RTAF, car ils ont amélioré leurs connaissances et leur expérience tout en traitant de nouvelles tactiques de combat et d'armes majeures, tactiques, de combat et modernes. De plus, cela a renforcé leurs relations avec les autres pays participants.

Remplacement partiel des F-5 E/F :

Suite à une seconde évaluation au début des années 2000, c’est le Gripen C/D suédois qui remporta le marché.

La formation du personnel thaïlandais a commencé en 2009. Quatre pilotes et 20 techniciens ont été formés par les Forces armées suédoises (SwAF). En 2010, ils étaient de retour dans leur pays d'origine et étaient prêts à recevoir la livraison du premier lot d'avions. Par ailleurs, le premier Saab 340 AEW « Erieye » est arrivé au mois de décembre 2010 au pays.

Les pilotes de Gripen sont tous d’ancien aviateurs ayant volé sur F-16, ce choix de la RTAF a permis une transition plus rapide vers le nouvel appareil, soit quatre mois. La première partie du cours est appelée Formation de conversion (CT) et permet d'apprendre à piloter le Gripen. La formation se déroule dans des simulateurs puis à bord de Gripen D bi-places qui prépare le premier vol « solo ». Le CT est suivi par la formation de préparation au combat (CRT). Durant cette phase, les pilotes apprennent à utiliser le radar et les systèmes d'armes.

Thailand’s order of four more H225Ms brings its total buy up to 12 helicopters. All should be in service by 2021.

Thailand has ordered four more H225M (previously designated EC725) multirole helicopters to augment the eight already procured, Airbus Helicopters announced on 20 September.

The order comes on the back of the initial order for four helicopters in 2012 (received in 2015), two more in 2014 (received in 2016), and two in 2016 (to be received by the end of this year). These additional four helicopters are set to be handed over by 2021.

The EC725 is an 11-tonne twin-engine helicopter that can carry up to 28 people. The Royal Thai Air Force (Kongtap Agard Thai - RTAF) H225Ms are configured for the combat search-and-rescue, search-and-rescue, and troop transportation roles primarily. The introduction of the platform will enable the RTAF to retire its ageing Bell UH-1H ‘Huey’ helicopters that have been in service since 1968.

La Royal Thai Air Force aligne désormais huit Airbus Helicopters H225M. Les sept et huitième exemplaires viennent en effet d'être réceptionnés. Il reste encore à la Royal Thai Air Force à prendre livraison de quatre Airbus Helicopters H225M. Le total des commandes prises depuis 2012 porte en effet sur douze H225M. Les appareils sont utilisés pour le transport de troupes ainsi que pour des missions de recherche et sauvetage incluant celles sur zone de combat. Airbus Helicopters a vendu près de 90 H225M qui sont actuellement en service dans les Forces de six pays, ayant accumulé plus de 100 000 heures de vol en opérations.

Previously, on November 26, 2018, Russian Helicopters organized a demonstration of their Ansat helicopters and Mi-171A2 helicopters at U-Tapao Airport. Naval Aviation Division of the Royal Thai Navy is part of the South Asian Heli Tour public relations campaign, in which Russian Helicopters bring both types of helicopter to connect with civilian customers and army groups in ASEAN countries in Southeast Asia both Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia

The army requires the approval of the cabinet for the purchase of 14 VT-4 battle tanks from China worth more than 2.3 billion baht, an army source said. This will be the third batch of VT-4 tanks purchased from China Ordnance Industries Group Corporation Limited. According to the source, each tank costs about 167 million baht.

The first batch of 28 such tanks was acquired in 2016 at a price of 4.9 billion Baht, and the second batch of 11 tanks, which arrived in 2017, was estimated at 2 billion Baht.

A source in the army purchasing committee said that the army wants to buy more VT-4 because of their satisfactory performance.

According to the source, before the transition to the VT-4, the army tried unsuccessfully to purchase T-84 Oplot-M tanks from the Ukrainian Ukroboronprom because of the unrest caused by the conflict with Russia.

New batch of Autonomous Truck Mounted Gun-ATMG 155mm/52 caliber Self-Propelled Howitzer 6x6 and Autonomous Truck Mounted Mortar-ATMM 120mm Self-Propelled Mortar System that all manufactured by Weapon Production Center (WPC), Defense Industry and Energy Center (DIEC), Ministry of Defense Thailand (technology company from Elbit Systems) was delivered to the Royal Thai Army in January 2019.
