A Project 636 heavy diesel-electric submarine According to Rosoboronexport, Project 636 proved highly effective while operated by naval forces of several countries.
Unparalleled in her technical and operational specifications, the ship is designed to conduct effective anti-sub warfare along with the capability to engage surface ships and coastal targets of potential adversary striking operations both independently or as part of a larger task force. Increased output of the main propulsion plant allowed to enhance significantly her submerged speed alongside with endurance range up to 7500 miles. Furthermore, she is one of the world’s quietest diesel-electric submarines providing guaranteed early enemy detection and long-range attack as well as evasive maneuverability and concealment.
Outstanding fighting efficiency of the project 636 submarine is supported by the Club-S missile system, intended for engaging all types of surface, submerged and coastal targets with unrivalled 3M-54E cruise missiles in the background of active electronic and firing counter effort. Capable of striking targets 275 km away, the system considerably strengthens combat stability of the DE submarine when facing enemy countermeasures. Wide use of the Club-S cruise missile system may result in drastic change of the entire sea battle nature in favor of the owner.

- Another Kilo-class submarine heading for Vietnam
VietNamNet Bridge – A Dutch heavy lift ship left Kaliningrad on February 3, carrying the second Russian-built Kilo-class submarine to a naval base in Vietnam.
The submarine, named HQ-183 Ho Chi Minh City, was built at Admiralty Verfi Shipyard in St. Petersburg.
Due to harsh weather conditions in St. Petersburg, the naval diesel-electric submarine was loaded on to the Dutch heavy lift ship at Kaliningrad’s Yantar shipyard instead of Admiralty Verfi.
The loading was supported by two tug boats and a canoe.
The Dutch ship is now travelling to the Baltic Sea and then to Vietnam. It is scheduled to dock at Cam Ranh Port in one and a half months.
Vietnam and Russia signed a document verifying the result of the vessel’s technical tests at the Admiralty Verfi Shipyard on January 16.
This is the second of the six Kilo-class submarines Vietnam is purchasing from Russia under a contract signed in 2009.
The first submarine, dubbed HQ-182 Hanoi, was delivered to Vietnam in November 2013. It was transported to Cam Ranh Port on December 31, 2013 and successfully made its first maiden voyage on January 8, 2014.
The third vessel, named HQ-184 Haiphong, was launched in Russia on August 28, 2013, and will be delivered to Vietnam this year.

- Vietnam in talks over Camcopter S-100 purchase
Schiebel is in talks with the Vietnam People's Navy (VPN) to supply its Camcopter S-100 rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle, company officials confirmed at the Singapore Airshow. Andrew Byrne, regional sales director for Asia-Pacific at the Austrian firm, told IHS Jane's that the company had briefed Vietnam about the S-100 and was planning to hold a multinational demonstration of the system's capabilities in the region later in 2014. "Every southeast Asian country is informed" of the S-100, Byrne said, adding that as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam had shown interest in the platform. Australia and New Zealand were also examining the system, with the latter's navy taking part in a demonstration for New Zealand power company Transpower in September 2013. If purchased by Vietnam, the S-100 would be deployed from the VPN's two new Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) Sigma-class (Type 9814) corvettes, Byrne said. DSNS said in August 2013 that it had agreed to sell the ships to Vietnam: the second sale of the ship to the region following a previous contract with Indonesia. Byrne added that Schiebel was in discussions with the Dutch shipbuilder about integration of the Camcopter's systems aboard the two corvettes during the manufacturing process. The S-100 on display at Singapore was fitted with the L-3 Wescam MX-10 EO sensor, an unidentified SIGINT sensor and the Selex ES PicoSAR AESA surveillance radar. Byrne described the S-100 as having a 200 km operational radius, within which the sensor range was 40 km at an altitude of 2,000 m. It is also fitted with a C-band datalink. An S-200, which Byrne described as being about "three times the size of the S-100", has been designed but a demonstrator has yet to be built, he said.

- Vietnam joins submarine arms race amid South China Sea tensions
Vietnam finally has a new weapon against China's aggressive maritime claims after receiving its first Kilo-class submarine from Russia on the last day of 2013, according to the Washington-based Strategy Page on Feb. 20.
The submarine is the first of six 2,300-tonne Kilo-class submarines to arrive in Vietnam after the country signed a US$2.1 billion deal with Russia in 2009. The submarines are likely to be based at Cam Ranh Bay, a deep water port located in southern Vietnam, Strategy Page said. The port was formerly used by the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and later became a naval facility for the Soviet Union.
A Kilo-class submarine is capable of carrying 18 torpedoes or SS-N-27 anti-ship missiles. The SS-N-27 can be launched underwater from the torpedo tubes and its range is estimated to be 300 kilometers. Combined with its quietness and Russian cruise missiles, the Kilo-class submarine is a very dangerous weapon against the surface combat vessels of the People's Liberation Army Navy operating in the disputed South China Sea, the report said.
Other nations such as North Korea, Iran and China have also imported Kilo-class submarines from Russia. China is said to have gone one step further, designing its own unlicensed version of the Kilo-class, known as the Type 41 Song-class submarine.
Vietnam was able to purchase the Russian-built submarines at a relatively low price, and they may not be equipped with air independent propulsion which would allow non-nuclear boats to stay underwater for weeks at a time, according to Strategy Page.
Tensions between Hanoi and Beijing center around the disputed Paracel and Spratly islands in the South China Sea, while Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei also lay claim to the area. http://www.wantchinatimes.com

- Design of future Damen SIGMA 9814 Corvettes for Vietnamese Navy revealed
During Vietship 2014 Nava Exhibition in Vietnam, Dutch shipyard Damen unveiled for the first time the design of the Sigma 9814 Corvette ordered by Vietnam. It was announced in October 2011 that Damen shipyard in Vlissingen, Netherlands will build four Sigma corvettes for the Vietnamese Navy. The first two ships will be built in Vlissingen (Netherlands), and the last two (options) will be built in Vietnam, under Dutch supervision.
Based on previously published information and from what can be seen on the model shown at Vietship 2014 the new SIGMA 9814 class will be fitted with: 8x MBDA Exocet MM40 Block 3 12x MBDA MICA VL surface-to-air missiles (in VLS) 1x Oto Melara 76mm main gun 2x Oto Melara MARLIN-WS 30mm gun mounts The corvette will acomodate one anti-submarine helicopters Ka-28. The corvettes are set to receive the latest generation of electronics and sensors from Thales including TACTICOS combat management system, SMART-S Mk 2 radar and STING EO Mk 2 electro-optical fire control system.
Design wise, the new Sigma 9814 differs quite a lot combared to existing Sigma designs (9813, 10513 or 10514) especially around the bridge area. Likewise, the bow appears to be more angled to possibly provide more stealth. http://www.navyrecognition.com
