Publié le 9 septembre 2009. En raison des disputes qui opposent les différents pays riverains de la mer Caspienne sur la répartition des zones d’exploration de gaz et de pétrole, le Turkménistan a annoncé son intention de construire une base navale. Le conflit territorial qui l’oppose à l’Azerbaïdjan a été soumise le mois dernier à une cour internationale.
“Nous allons acheter des navires lance-missiles” a déclaré le président turkmène Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov. “Des exercices navals seront effectués régulièrement”, a-t-il ajouté. Le président n’a pas donné de détails sur le type ou le nombre de navires, mais il a précisé qu’il espère que la livraison interviendrait en 2015. Le conflit entre les 2 pays peut mettre en danger la construction du gazoduc Nabucco, financé par l’Union Européenne, dont l’objectif est d’amener le gaz trouvé au Turkménistan vers l’Europe occidentale. Pour éviter la Russie, le gazoduc doit emprunter le territoire de l’Azerbaïdjan. Le Turkménistan est le plus gros exportateur de gaz en Asie Centrale. L’intérêt du pays pour participer à Nabucco est apparu en avril dernier, lorsque la Russie a cessé d’acheter le gaz dans ce pays. Le Turkménistan ne possède pas officiellement de marine. La protection navale de la région est effectuée par une force militaire commune, partagée par toutes les anciennes républiques soviétiques (Azerbaïdjan, Kazakhstan et Turkménistan) riveraines de la mer Caspienne. Une flottille fixe est basée à Astrakhan en Russie. Outre cette force navale commune, le Turkménistan possède des unités navales de police qui appartiennent aux gardes frontières. La plus grande de ces unités est un “cutter” de la classe Point, transféré en 2000 par les USA et armé de 2 mitrailleuses de 12,4 mm. Référence : Poder Naval (Brésil)

Turkmenistan’s state media has released video footage showing a member of the Turkmenistan Army displaying a Chinese-built Qian Wei 2 (QW-2) manportable air defence system (MANPADS) for the country’s president, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov: a likely indication that the system has entered service with the force.
Released in early January, the footage shows President Berdymukhammedov inspecting troops and military equipment at one of the country’s border posts.

The China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CNPMIEC), which is responsible for the export marketing of the QW family of MANPADS, describes the 1.59 m long QW-2 as an infrared-homing, surface-to-air missile system capable of engaging “fighters, attackers, armed helicopters, unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, and cruise missiles” flying at an altitude between 10 m and 4,000 m and at a range between 500 m and 6,000 m.

Turkmenistan has displayed what appear to be newly acquired Al Shibl 2 wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APCs) in a parade to mark the country's Independence Day on 27 October.
Each of the eight Al Shibl 2s shown in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat was armed with what appeared to be a .50 calibre Browning M2 HB heavy machine gun in a roof-mounted protected weapon station.
The 4×4 vehicles, which are manufactured in Saudi Arabia, are designed to provide protected mobility for military personnel in low-intensity combat environments such as during patrol and reconnaissance missions, according to Jane's Land Warfare Platforms: Armoured Fighting Vehicles .
The Al Shibl 2, which weighs 4.6 tonnes, has a longer wheelbase (3.18 m) than the Al Shibl 1 (2.31 m). That said, the vehicle, which has a top speed of 120 km/h, is powered by the same 228 hp engine as the Al Shibl 1.
In addition to its crew of three, the vehicle can carry six fullyequipped troops. The Toyota Land Cruiser chassis is fitted with an all-welded steel armour body that provides the occupants with NATO STANAG 4569 Level K1 (5.56/7.62 mm NATO ball) protection against small arms fire, but higher protection levels are available, according to the manufacturer.

Delivery flight Turkmenistan Super Tucanos
On 28 May 2021, two EMBRAER A-29B Super Tucanos light attack aircraft destined for the Turkmenistan Air Force were photographed at Luqa (Malta) whilst on transit.
The two A-29Bs, registered PT-ZHI and PT-ZHJ, had their roundels and serials taped over. Their future serials are 01 Blue (c/n 31400270) respectively 02 Blue (c/n 31400271).
Scramble Magazine already reported on 9 December 2020 of their existence when they were noted at São José dos Campos (Brazil). It was expected that they would depart shortly after to Recife in the northeast of Brazil for their delivery flight. This now seems to have taken a little longer.
Rumours say that EMBRAER has been in talks with the Turkmenistan government since 2019 to close a deal including six Super Tucanos. However both parties have denied and the exact number of aicraft has not been revealed so far. In June 2019, the Turkmenistan State TV broadcasted images of Super Tucano PT-ZTU (EMBRAER demonstration aircraft) flying over a Turkmenistan air base.

According to information published by Turkmen TV on October 25, 2022, the Turkman Naval Forces unveiled their C92 corvette, Deniz Han, during a military parade. She was built by Dearsan Shipyard and commissioned in August 2021.

Corvette (C 92) was developed to operate on different missions, mainly anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and patrol/escort. It is suitable for helicopter operations.
The hull is built from AH 36 while the superstructure is built from Marine Al alloy. The ship is 91.4 metres, the beam is 13.3 metres and the draft is 3.5 metres.
The platform’s displacement is roughly 1,600 tons. The maximum speed is 26 knots and the range at economic speed is 3,000 NM. The C 92 can be operated by a crew of 100.
The sensors include combat management system, 3D air and surface surveillance radar, IFF system, ESM, electronic countermeasure and CHAFF/DECOY systems.
The Deniz Han is armed with MBDA's Otomat Mk 2 Block IV surface-to-air missile system, two vertical-launch (VL) systems for MBDA's VL MICA short-range anti-aircraft missiles, a 76 mm Leonardo Super Rapid Gun, and a 35 mm Korkut-D twin-barrelled close-in weapon system.

Une assez belle armée avec une modernisation rapide. Mélange de matériel russe moderne (T-90, Smerch...), occidentaux, serbe, etc. Pour les amateurs de matériels militaires, l'armée du Turkménistan est intéressante à observer.
