Turkey's 1st MALE UAV Makes Test Flight
ANKARA - Turkey's first medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV made its first test flight Dec. 31.
Dubbed the ANKA, the 600-kilogram UAV flew for 14 minutes, said officials from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), Turkey's main aerospace company and the UAV's developer They said a total of 180 engineers have been working since 2005 on the ANKA, which was unveiled last summer. Powered by a 155-horsepower diesel engine, the UAV has a wingspan of 17.3 meters and a composite body eight meters long. TAI officials said the ANKA would eventually fly up to 23,000 feet for 23 hours. Turkey has made smaller UAVs, but this is the first drone in the MALE category. Turkish procurement officials aim at full self-sufficiency over the next several years after having bought Israeli-made Heron MALE drones last year. In the meantime, Turkey also is seeking to buy armed MQ-9 Reaper drones from the United States, but it has not received U.S. approval for the sale. Turkey's military has used the UAVs mostly against Kurdish separatists operating in the country's southeast bordering Iraq and Iran. defensenews | |

| Papandreu qui se plaint du survol ce mercredi d'une ile grec habité par une formation de 8 F16 ( paraitrait il selon les medias turc que c'était des F16) - Citation :
- The one-time Greek foreign minister, credited with initiating the so-called "earthquake rapprochement" of 1999 with the late Turkish FM Ismail Cem, referred directly to the challenges and day-to-day problems affecting bilateral relations, while he noted that his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has chosen to contribute to a new relationship of peace and cooperation. (ANA-MPA)
"Nevertheless, trust is difficult to develop," he stressed, citing a provocation that occurred as late as Wednesday with the overflight of eight Turkish warplanes of "a small Greek isle (Agathonissi) with 150 inhabitants."
"... What's the meaning behind this violation of Greek sovereignty? These types of actions do not change the (legal) status in the Aegean, you can be certain of that. They (overflights) may have become routine for Turkey, but do not believe they are routine for Greece. Every such action is a reminder to Greeks that Turkey has not decided to establish different relations with Greece," he emphasised.
Conversely, he underlined that he doesn't believe "the actions of one day" can undermine the careful and systematic work conducted over years. Moreover, he called on Erdogan, whom he referred to as a "reliable interlocutor", to consolidate the "trust between us and, in the end, to build a stable peace".

Five military officers die in helicopter crash in Ankara |
| | | | | | Five military officers were killed late on Monday when their helicopter crashed near the village of Tuluntaş in Ankara province during a training flight. | | The helicopter took off from a military base in Polatlı, Ankara, and went down near Tuluntaş, killing all five passengers onboard. The General Staff announced that contact with the UH-1 helicopter was lost at around 9 p.m. and its wreckage found around 10:30 p.m. An investigation was launched into the accident, the cause of which was not immediately known, it added. The officers were identified as lieutenants Şükrü Pürlü, Taner Erdoğan, Fikri Dilsiz, Erhan Gül and Kemal Taşçı. The Army Aviation Command helicopter was on a training flight and the officers were five army pilots, the statement continued. Following the crash, Land Forces Commander Gen. Erdal Ceylanoğlu visited the crash site. The head of the Land Forces Training and Doctrine Command, Gen. Saldıray Berk, also accompanied Ceylanoğlu. The helicopter’s wreckage was found after joint civilian-military search and rescue teams comprising units from the Ankara Municipality, the Gendarmerie General Command and villagers swept the area. Initial findings suggest the helicopter might have crashed because of heavy fog. Interior Minister Beşir Atalay also said yesterday the crash was most likely due to fog but added that it was too early to know the exact cause. Sadık Ergin, a local who also took part in the search and rescue efforts, said it was very difficult to find the wreckage in the dense fog. He added that they saw the aircraft had broken apart into five to six pieces and that the wreckage was scattered around an area of 20 square meters. The bodies of the officers were taken to the Gülhane Military Academy of Medicine (GATA) after the crash. Funerals will be held for four of them, Taşçı, Pürlü, Dilsiz and Erdoğan, today in İstanbul, Sivas, Mersin and Tokat, respectively. A funeral was scheduled to be held for Gül in Ankara yesterday afternoon. News reports said one of the officers, Dilsiz, was Independent Public Workers’ Union (BASK) President Resul Akay’s nephew. Dilsiz was sent to Ankara for a temporary assignment, Akay said, adding that he found out about the crash from the television. “I called the Army Aviation Command and was told that he had died,” he said. Akay voiced concerns about not having been given much information about the crash. |
