Elbit Systems to Supply the Israeli MoD with Cardom Systems for Approximately $40 Million
Haifa, Israel | Elbit Systems Ltd. ("Elbit Systems"), announced today that it was awarded a contract by the Israeli Ministry of Defense (MOD) in the amount of approximately $40 million to supply Cardom systems to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Manufactured by Elbit Systems’ subsidiary Soltam Systems Ltd., Cardom systems were initially supplied to the IDF in 2007 and are considered among the most advanced of their kind in the world. The systems are to be supplied over a period of four years.
The Cardom systems integrate a 120mm mortar with innovative fire control, navigation, automatic aiming and propulsion systems. The Cardom mortars are operational by various IDF infantry units, as well as various armies around the world, including the U.S. Army.
CARDOM
Soltam Systems top of the line product is the renowned and battle-proven Cardom, the world's first autonomous 120 mm self-propelled recoil mortar. The Cardom is an autonomous, computerized 120/81mm Recoil Mortar System for mounting on Light & Medium armored tracked carriers and 4X4, 6X6, 8X8 wheeled armored and light chassis, to provide accurate effective and immediate fire support for rapid deployed and Special Forces, as well as for Infantry and Artillery units.
The Cardom system is NATO qualified and is in active service in modern armies, including in the U.S. Army's Stryker 8X8 brigades and the Israel Defense Force – M1064 mortar carriers, and has also been sold to European armies, NATO forces and African countries.
The Cardom is the only system of its type that has received Type Classification Test approval from the US Army after firing 30,000 bombs under extreme temperature and other environmental conditions, from the desert in the south of the US to the snowy areas of Alaska in the north. The Cardom is already in use with United States forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, and more than 150,000 rounds of mortar fire have already been fired by forces around the world with unprecedented high precision.
Israeli army artillery units who operated in the Gaza Strip during Operation "Cast Lead" in 2008, also reported with the Cardom substantial improvement and lower Circular Error Probability (CEP), compared to traditional 120 mm mortar systems previously in use.
The Cardom's unique design enables ground operation of its 120 mm barrel and accommodation of 81 mm barrel to reduce training costs and diminish collateral damage when used in urban areas and firing on sensitive targets
The Cardom aiming mechanisms are linked to Elbit's state-of-the-art command, control, communications and intelligence (C4I) systems, to achieve quick response automatic laying mode. The IDF delivered system takes target acquisition data, typically from the locally developed Azimuth Altas Mk 2 system, which provides range, bearing, position and other data from an observation position and transmits it directly to the Cardom. Using electrical servo motors the mortar barrel is then set to the exact traverse and elevation angles for firing.
The Cardom is muzzle loaded and has with a trained crew a high fire rate of 16 rpm followed by a 4 rpm sustained rate of fire. The Cardom can fire from wheeled and soft AFV's, such as is the case with the American Stryker and even from a HUMVWEE (81 mm) in any condition and to every angle (360 degrees). These capabilities were not previously available with older mortar models, which are installed on Armored Combat Vehicles.
Soltam Systems also leads in the upgrading of East-European type armored combat vehicles into Cardom carriers, leading them to winning numerous contracts with many more in the pipeline.
The Cardom is a "force multiplier": it is operated by a crew of two to four people and can store between 30 and 70 bombs depending on the carrier. A single Cardom system is as effective as and more accurate than four conventional mortars. The Cardom is a dramatic change in operational concept, providing an organic capability for lower-echelon tactical forces without having to ask for fire support.

Paratroops prepare for first brigade-level jump in 15 years
In preparation for future conflicts far from Israel, the IDF Paratroopers Brigade is planning on holding its first exercise in close to two decades – including the parachuting of the entire brigade.
The last time such a drill was held was over 15 years ago, even though soldiers in the Paratroopers Brigade, as well as some other units, continue to undergo parachuting training on a regular basis.
In military conflict, the IDF has not parachuted large forces in a number of decades, but retaining the capability is believed to be of extreme importance in the face of a potential future war with Syria, or Hezbollah in Lebanon.
“During the Second Lebanon War in 2006, the IDF used helicopters to transport soldiers deeper into Lebanon, something that could be done instead by parachuting,” an IDF source said.
While parachuting behind enemy lines might seem obsolete, it was still a skill IDF soldiers needed to learn, a high-ranking IDF officer said Monday in response to public criticism that military parachuting was archaic and outdated.
Parachuting, IDF officers have explained, was a “means of transportation” just like a tank or a plane.
“There are many means of transportation like tanks and helicopters to get soldiers from one place to another,” the officer said. “But every normal military, like the US and Britain, also use parachutes.”

The Israel Air Force Marks 40 years of UAV Operational Use
Published October 3, 2011 | By Rob Vogelaar
Itzhak Nissan, President and CEO of IAI, said:” Throughout the years, IAI delivered innovative UAS which have always been considered impressive technological achievements and have made both IAI and the State of Israel very proud”
The Israel Air Force (IAF) has marked yesterday (2.10.2011) 40 years since the establishment of its first Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Squadron #200, located at the IAF base in Palmachim.
A ceremony was held in the presence of current squadron members and veterans, including IAF Commanding Officer, MGen. Ido Nehushtan, senior officials from the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMoD), the IMoD R&D branch, and representatives of the Israeli defense companies whose engineering talent and innovative skills have collectively pioneered to where Israeli UAVs are today.
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has led the IAF’s UAS development over the past 30 years, since fielding the IAF’s first ever operational UAS, the “Scout” and through today’s “Heron Turbo Prop” (Heron TP) UAS.
The Scout UAV entered IAF operational service in 1981,and excelled in the 1982 Operation Peace for Galilee (First Lebanon War) being retired only in 2004.
IAI’s Searcher UAV became operational in 1992 and underwent an upgrade in 1998 with entry of the “Searcher II” that included better engine performance, and advanced navigation and communication systems. In addition to the IAF, Searcher is in service with 10 different customers world wide, including the Spanish Air Force that operates it in Afghanistan.
In 2005, the IAI Heron UAS, named “Shoval”, was inducted into the squadron. IAI maintenance teams support the Shoval UAS and its high operating tempo all year round.
The Heron MALE UAV (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) weighs one ton and has a wingspan of 16.6 meters. It is designed to carry out both strategic and tactical missions at an altitude of up to 30 thousand feet with the ability to loiter for up to 24 hours.
The Heron UAV can carry multiple payloads and operate them simultaneously when needed: electro-optical payloads, maritime patrol radar, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), relay equipment, various communication systems and more, according to customer needs.
The Heron UAS is operated by 15 different customers worldwide and functions as the central ISR aerial asset of the German, Australian, Canadian and French forces.
The latest addition to the IAF is its largest and most sophisticated UAS: the Heron Turbo Prop (TP) that was inducted to Squadron 210 in February 2010 under the name “Eitan”. The IAI-designed Heron TP can perform long range missions of over 1,000 KM, and can remain airborne for over 24 hours. The UAV has a powerful turbo-prop engine (1200 horsepower), allowing it to reach altitudes of over 41,000 feet – higher than normal commercial aircraft flight operations.
The Heron TP’s takeoff weight is 5 tons and has the ability to carry payloads weighing approximately 1,000 KG. The Heron TP UAV incorporates an open architecture design allowing for the integration of multiple missions without need for significant changes to the base system, and providing flexibility to its operators in exchanging payloads as needed.
The Eitan has a wingspan of approximately 26 meters (similar to the wingspan of a Boeing 737 aircraft) and is designed to meet the demanding civil aviation authorities’ certification requirements created in recent years in Israel and abroad.
Itzhak Nissan, President and CEO of IAI, said:” Throughout the years, IAI delivered innovative UAS which have always been considered impressive technological achievements and have made both IAI and the State of Israel very proud. The UAVs are providing a crucial contribution to the IAF’s operational capabilities.

Israel; Navy and AF require additional resources to defend offshore energy assets Tuesday, 04 October 2011 07:56
Israel’s expanding maritime security market is generating separate, interconnected niche sectors: a naval buildup in defense of the nation’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and a civilian force to protect commercial infrastructure.
Industry executives here anticipate a surge in maritime C4ISR as governments and commercial entities build coordinated defenses of energy platforms, pipelines, liquefaction ships and other critical EEZ assets.
Requirement span from manned and unmanned patrol flights, ship and USV maritime patrols, sea based sensors, physical barriers, military presence.
Meanwhile , The Israeli Government is under public pressure to cut some $600M. from the 2012 defense budget.

Korea, Lockheed Martin woo IAF with aircraft deal
By YAAKOV KATZ 10/10/2011 11:28
Lockheed Martin says KIA partnership will make it easier for Israel to use foreign military funds it receives from US to purchase aircraft.
Talkbacks (76)
In a move that’s likely to increase Israeli interest in its aircraft, Korea Aerospace Industries announced Sunday it was partnering with Lockheed Martin to market the T-50 supersonic trainer under consideration by the Israel Air Force.
The IAF is looking to replace its aging fleet of A-4 Skyhawks, which are used to train cadets in their advanced pilot training.
The competition is down to KAI’s T-50 and Italy’s Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master.
In addition to the performance of the aircraft, other considerations for Israel are the effect the decision will have on Israel’s diplomatic relations with Italy and South Korea.
In South Korea, for example, Israeli defense companies are seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in new contracts that could be endangered if the IAF chooses the Italian plane. On the other hand, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has personally lobbied Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu about purchasing the Italian aircraft.
The Defense Ministry is expected to make a final decision on the deal in the beginning of 2012. The IAF is seeking between 25 and 35 jets in a deal that is expected to reach $1 billion.
Lockheed Martin released a statement on Sunday saying that by partnering with KAI in marketing the plane, it would be easier for Israel to use foreign military funds it receives from the US to purchase the aircraft.
It is unclear if Israel would be able to use the US military aid if it decides to purchase Italy’s M-346. Last week, The Jerusalem Post reported the Italian government is in talks with the Defense Ministry about the possibility that the deal will be done by barter and that Italy will receive two AWACS aircraft from Israel Aerospace Industries and in exchange will provide Israel with the M-346.
On Sunday, a delegation of South Korean defense officials arrived in Israel for talks with the Defense Ministry regarding the deal and potential future cooperation between Seoul and Israeli defense companies.
