ISRAEL TO MERGE STATE-HELD DEFENCE FIRMS
Faced with union opposition to privatisation plans, the Israeli government has decided instead to merge Israel Military Industries with one of the other two state-owned defence companies, Israel Aerospace Industries or Rafael, both of which are understood to be interested in IMI’s Givon heavy propulsion division. This makes missiles, satellite launch boosters and other highly classified weapon systems. Despite rising sales, IMI is under heavy financial strain from its pension obligations.

Navy Readies for its New Submarines
The Israel Navy is making advanced preparations to absorb two new German-made Dolphin-class submarines, IDF journal Bamachaneh reported in its latest issue. The number of soldiers selected for submarine warfare has grown by 30% in the latest IDF recruitment batches, in order to man the additional submarines. The Navy currently has three submarines, also of the Dolphin class, so the addition of two subs means that the force is growing 66% bigger. "We are in mid-process and are slowly adding more crews to be trained for service in the submarines," explained Naval Instruction Base Commander Col. Ronen Nimni. "We are also taking care to add crew commanders who closely mentor the soldiers." More officers are being trained for submarine posts as well. The number of cadets who will be trained for submarine command positions is rising by 35%. According to an article in World Politics Review, Israel's three submarines "reportedly carry nuclear-tipped cruise missiles of an unidentified type." "The missiles, part of Israel's estimated 100-strong nuclear arsenal, reportedly have a range of up to 800 miles. The subs probably cannot hit Iran without passing through the Suez into the Red Sea and ultimately the Indian Ocean. The Red Sea is also the best route to the Gulf of Oman, where Israeli ships and submarines might enforce a blockade of Iran, during wartime."

Israel bars AESA radar export to India
The Israeli defence ministry has blocked the potential export sale of Israel Aerospace Industries' EL/M-2052 active electronically scanned array radar to a number of countries, with its action having an immediate impact on the Indian market.
The restrictions were imposed following pressure from the US administration, which has outlined its concerns to Israel several times in the past two years.
Washington's position is driven by an assumption that exporting IAI's advanced radar would undermine the sale of US-made systems on the international stage, sources say.
At one stage, Saab had considered offering the EL/M-2052 as part of its Gripen NG proposal for the Indian air force's medium multi-role combat aircraft requirement, but instead opted for Selex Galileo's ES05 Raven AESA.
IAI had also viewed the Indian Aeronautical Development Agency's Tejas light combat aircraft as a potential candidate for the AESA radar. The modular design weighs 130-180kg (286-397lb) and consumes 4-10kVA, depending on the design configuration, and has built-in growth potential, the company says.
Developed by IAI's Elta Systems subsidiary, the EL/M-2052 uses an array of solid-state transmit/receive modules designed to dynamically shape the radiation pattern using an ultra-low side-lobe antenna. It can perform simultaneous multi-mode operations, detecting airborne threats and supporting navigation and mapping, by producing high-resolution synthetic aperture radar imagery.
The sensor can detect and track up to 64 airborne targets from long range, and enable a pilot to engage several simultaneously using air-to-air missiles, IAI says. The sensor can also provide long-range target detection, classification and tracking in the anti-ship role.

Elbit's second Hermes 900 poised to enter flight test
Elbit Systems' second prototype Hermes 900 unmanned air vehicle will soon enter flight testing, while its first example has already accumulated more than 350 flight hours.
Elbit was awarded a launch contract in February 2010 to supply a "small number" of its new design under an initial procurement by the Israeli defence forces, which already operate the smaller Hermes 450 air vehicle. A follow-on order is expected within the framework of the nation's next multi-year plan.
The Hermes 900 has a wingspan of 15m (49.2ft), is 8.3m long and has a maximum take-off weight of 1,100kg (2,420lb), including a 300kg payload. The UAV can be flown to an altitude of more than 30,000ft, and has an automatic take-off and landing capability.
A universal command and control ground station enables operators to use both the Hermes 450 and 900 designs. The former type has logged more than 170,000 flight hours in operational use.

Israel tests virus aimed at Iranian nuclear facilities
MOSCOW | Israeli specialists have tested a Stuxnet computer worm which can be used against Iran's nuclear facilities, the New York Times has reported.
The tests were carried out in Israel's nuclear facility in Dimona on the centrifuges that are believed to be identical to those at the Iranian nuclear site in Natanz.
"Dimona tested the effectiveness of the Stuxnet computer worm, a destructive program that appears to have wiped out roughly a fifth of Iran's nuclear centrifuges and helped delay, though not destroy, Tehran's ability to make its first nuclear arms," the report said.
"To check out the worm, you have to know the machines," a U.S. expert told the newspaper. "The reason the worm has been effective is that the Israelis tried it out."
In September, Iran announced that the Stuxnet virus attacked the computers of employees at the Bushehr nuclear power plant but it did not hamper the work.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad admitted in late November that the "enemies" of Iran created limited problems for the country's uranium enrichment centrifuges.
Western powers suspect Iran of building nuclear weapons under the guise of a peaceful nuclear program, an accusation Tehran strongly denies. (RIA Novosti)

Israel to expand F-15 upgrade plan
The Israeli air force is to enhance an upgrade programme to its Boeing F-15 "Baz" strike aircraft to include its oldest A/B-model aircraft. One prototype has already been completed and will serve to accelerate the series upgrade. "We are confident that after the upgrade is complete, all the Baz fleet will be capable of performing long-range strikes in the next 10 years," an air force source says. Israel's F-15C/Ds have been upgraded within recent years, but the service had not planned to invest in modernising its earlier A/Bs. However, a more comprehensive upgrade is now aimed at enabling the older aircraft to use advanced weapon systems, such as bombs equipped with Boeing's Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kit. The work will also include improvements to the aircraft's radar, plus fuselage strengthening. Officially, the air force has not related the expansion of its F-15 upgrade to delays with Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. But sources say the issue does have an impact on some programmes that are connected to the operational capabilities of its current fighters. Israel still operates 25 single-seat F-15As and five two-seat F-15Bs, which Flightglobal's MiliCAS database says were delivered between 1974 and 1978.

Air Force expands its UAV capabilities
IAF inaugurates new squadron of unmanned aerial vehicles; can fly higher, stay in air longer, carry larger payload than predecessors. The IAF will inaugurate a new squadron of unmanned aerial vehicles in the coming months, in an effort to boost its intelligence-gathering capabilities. The squadron will operate the Heron, made by Israel Aerospace Industries, which is capable of remaining in the air for two days without refueling. By comparison, a previous UAV used by the IAF, the Searcher Mk. II, can only remain airborne for 12 hours. The Heron can fly at altitudes of 30,000 feet, making it a difficult target for standard anti-aircraft weapons.
It has the ability to carry a 250 kg. payload, compared to 100 kg. for the Searcher.
The Heron has a wingspan of 16.6 m. and weighs 1,200 kg., with an operation range of hundreds of kilometers – and the ability to fly in all weather conditions, during the day and night.
The new squadron will be a drone unit operated by the IAF.
Late last month, the air force launched the squadron – which operates the Heron TP, one of the largest UAV’s in the world – which is also made by Israel Aerospace Industries, and has a wingspan of 26 m.
The IAF’s other squadrons operate the Heron, as well as Elbit Systems’s Hermes 450.
In recent years, UAVs have played a dominant role in IAF operations on various fronts – primarily in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip – and account for a quarter of the IAF’s overall flight hours.
The drones are frequently used for reconnaissance and surveillance. According to foreign news reports, some of the UAVs used by the IAF also have the ability to fire air-to-surface missiles.
Israel Aerospace Industries is a world leader in the development of UAVs, and a number of NATO countries currently operate its systems in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Last week, the Singapore press reported that the Asian island country was operating IAI’s Searcher UAV in Afghanistan.
According to the report, the Singaporean troops were operating four Searcher UAV systems in Afghanistan.

SOURCE:Flight International Israeli Military Industries flare casts new light on combat zones By Arie Egozi
Israel Military Industries has developed a new spectral flare that increases the survivability of combat helicopters in danger zones.
Smaller and lighter than flares now in use, the new product enables a helicopter to carry a larger number, allowing a longer safe flight in danger zones. IMI says the flare, initially tailored for use on Israeli air force Bell AH-1 Cobra helicopters, is effective against "advanced threats".
The Israeli air force uses its Cobra helicopters in missions over the Gaza strip where Hamas guerillas are equipped with shoulder-launched heat-seeking missiles.
In 2010, IMI partnered with Esterline Defense Technologies to produce and market IMI's new advanced covert flares in the USA. These countermeasure decoy flares provide protection against various infrared guided missile threats at both low and high altitudes.
Esterline is an established supplier to the US government, so the agreement gives IMI US market access.
IMI is also manufacturing a "dark flare", which is invisible to the human eye and was developed as part of an anti-missile system for passenger aircraft.
