Affirmatif, MAATAWI. Ce fut lors d'un exercice qui s'est déroulé le 14 octobre 2010, en Grèce, où des hélicoptères israéliens et grecs ont simulé des opérations de recherche et de sauvetage au combat.

Due to concrete threats, IDF trains to deal with abductions
Ephraim Regional Brigade held abduction drill in Samaria this week
15/12/2011, Author: Florit Shoihet
10:44 A.M. Near the Emmanuel Junction in Samaria. An old blue Subaru with its front hood up stands on the side of the road. Next to it are two Palestinian civilians, appearing helpless as they look at the engine.
An IDF vehicle stops and three soldiers get out to help the stranded motorists. "What happened here?" one of the soldiers asks. "The engine is dead," says one of the Palestinians.
As the soldiers approach, one of the Palestinians deftly pulls a pistol from his coat and opens fire, hitting two of the soldiers. Within seconds, the Palestinian terrorists overpower the third soldier and force him into the Subaru. It's 10:46. The terrorists throw several stun grenades and a smoke grenade before driving off toward the north, with a kidnapped IDF soldier in their possession.
While this scenario could be real, this week it was just an exercise. The Ephraim Regional Brigade held a abduction exercise that lasted for more than 48 hours. All parts of the brigade took part in the exercise.
"The brigade is dealing with a wide range of events, and for us the most dangerous event is an abduction," Deputy Brigade Commander Lieutenant Colonel Tzur Harpaz told the IDF Website. "This exercise increases our readiness and in the end we will know how to best manage an incident of this type."
Lieutenant Colonel Eyal Dagan explained: "The goal is to train the rescue forces of the Central Command to deal with abductions, as well as to raise the awareness of soldiers about abductions."
"The exercise was initiated in the wake of concrete threats to abduct soldiers in the area, and thus we need to train for this," Lt. Col. Dagan said.
Recently, a number of procedures in the Central Command have been changed due to the threat of abductions.
There was no dull moment during the exercise this week. The soldiers who simulated the kidnappers prepared ahead of time, wore civilian clothes, equipped themselves with a pair of vehicles and followed strict safety guidelines. Their objective: to mislead the pursuing forces. Their means: distracting the forces with another passing Palestinian vehicle heading southwards toward the Ramallah area, while the vehicle with the kidnapped soldier took a meandering route north through Samaria, the Jordan Valley and Binyamin.
10:47 A.M. The area of the kidnapping is shrouded in smoke. The security officer of a nearby Israeli community arrives at the scene just as the distracting vehicle passes by. "There's been an abduction," the wounded soldiers yell to him. The security officer leans over and questions them while also summoning nearby rescue crews. It's almost 11 A.M. IDF forces begin to flow to the scene en masse. Trackers search for foot prints and tire marks. One of the shot soldiers dies from his wounds while the second continues to be treated by medics. Reservists secure the area.
Ephraim Brigade Commander Colonel Ran Kahane arrives at the scene and makes an initial assessment. He questions the soldier and considers every small detail in the area. Israel Police and other forces arrive, analyze maps and listen to reports, with one goal in mind - finding the abducted soldier.
Some forces remain on the scene but most jump into their jeeps and begin the race against time to find and rescue the abducted soldier.
Last month, the Jordan Valley Brigade conducted an abduction exercise that was observed by Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz.
The issue of abductions has received greater attention since the release of Staff Sergeant Gilad Shalit two months ago as well as the abduction threat in various sectors.

Cutting edge weapon system advances infantry capabilities
IDF tests new capabilities of system used on Leopard APCs, enabling improved laser range measurements and in-motion shooting
IDF Ground Forces continue to develop the advanced Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) enabling use of a variety of weapons via remote control or automatically, including machine guns, grenade launchers, and anti-tank missiles. An experimental drill was held testing the system's new capabilities of improved laser range measurements and in-motion shooting.
During the training exercise that took place at the IDF Training Base for Infantry Corps Professions, combat soldiers from the Golani Brigade and female field instructors mastered use of the new system. "The new RCWS greatly improves our operation, enabling more focused shooting," said Leopard Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) Department Commander, Maj. Nir Toledano.
Maj. Toledano mentioned that "the significant improvement is that the system is more stable, enabling shooting during an ambush. In the past, we were required to suspend motion to fire. Additionally, the enhanced laser range meter enables locating targets more quickly."
He explained that the new system was already implemented into operational activity and will soon be incorporated in more combat units in the IDF. "The new RCWS capabilities provide professional, accurate and fast responses," Maj. Toledano explained.

Israel is reinstating one of its Dolphin-class submarines; Gantz gives Chief of Staff awards to covert Flotilla 13, Maglan units.
Talkbacks (20)
Israel will boost its long-arm strategic capabilities with the reinstatement of one of its Dolphin-class submarines that underwent an unprecedented structural overhaul.
The submarine, one of three currently in the navy, arrived in Israel in 1999 and is the first to undergo the mid-life renovation. The Israeli submarines, which were purchased from Germany, have an expected lifespan of 30 years.
The submarine was taken out of service almost two years ago but the renovation was a carefully guarded secret in the navy so Israel’s enemies would not know that one of its three submarines was out of commission.
Now that it is heading back to sea and ahead of the graduation of the navy’s 100th Submariner Course, The Jerusalem Post was invited Sunday to tour the shipyard in Haifa where the submarine is being reassembled.
“Every vessel that comes in to the shipyard for maintenance and upgrades comes out with improved capabilities,” Col. Eli Shouach, commander of the navy’s shipyard, told the Post. “There are a select number of countries around the world which can independently renovate a submarine. Some have tried and failed.”
Israel’s submarines are the military’s most expensive platform and are often referred to as the country’s second-strike doomsday weapon due to their reported ability to fire cruise missiles tipped with nuclear warheads.
The three Dolphin-class submarines in the navy’s fleet are called Dolphin, Leviathan and Tekuma and are believed to be some of the most advanced diesel-electric submarines in the world. They replaced the 23- year-old Gal class submarines and in the coming years will be joined by two additional submarines currently under construction in Germany.
Maj. Doron Bareket, the officer in charge of the upgrades, said that the renovations include dismantling all of the submarine’s valves, pipes and sonar systems. The engine is also taken apart, cleaned and reassembled.
The submarine’s body is also cleaned and cracks in the hull are welded back together.
The entire upgrade is costing the navy close to NIS 100 million, the most expensive upgrade the shipyard has ever carried out.
With the expected arrival of two additional submarines in the coming years, the shipyard is also undergoing renovations to accommodate the new vessels and building new hangars, some of which will be protected from potential Hezbollah and Syrian missile attacks.
In related news, Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz decided Sunday to award the navy’s Flotilla 13 commando unit, better known as the Shayetet, the annual “Chief of Staff Award” for demonstrating impressive operational capabilities over the past year.
The Shayetet’s operations are almost all classified. One known operation from the past year included the seizure of the ictoria cargo ship that was transporting 50 tons of weaponry, including sophisticated Iranian-made anti-ship missiles, from Iran to Hamas

Israel Air Force Plans Inviting Foreign Air Forces to a Multi-National Air Exercise in 2013
The Israeli and Italian Air Forces on Friday completed a two-week joint training exercise involving fighter jets from both nations. The exercise involved pilots flying F-16A, F-16C and F-15Is from three Israeli squadrons, pitted against Italian Air Force pilots flying Eurofighter Typhoons and Panavia Tornado strike fighters. (Photos: courtesy of Nehemia Gershuni.) This was the second joint exercise the Italian Air Force is conducting with the Israel Air Force in the IAF Airbase in Ovda, near Eilat, flying over the Israeli air/ground and air/air training range in the southern Negev desert. A similar exercise took place two months ago at the Italian Air Force at the Decimomannu Airbase in Sardinia.

The IAF has been training extensively in recent years with the air forces of Italy, Greece and Romania, following the Turkish government decision to terminate joint training with Israel. In 2013 the IAF plans to invite a number of foreign air forces to a ‘red flag’ style multi-national joint exercise, to further elevate international cooperation with friendly nations. On the final day of the exercise, defense and air attaches from a number of countries, including the U.S., Germany, Canada, Spain, Chile, Brazil, Greece, Turkey, Hungary and Japan were attending and briefed by top IAF officers about future joint training opportunities. The IAF considers the Israeli ‘desert flag’ will provide a multinational training environment similar to the Turkish hosted ‘Anatolian Eagle’ exercise which Israel was forced to abandon since 2008. The IAF has also participated in the Red Flag and Maple Flag exercises in the U.S. and Canada, however these involved extremely long flights and significant expenses that could be saved by conducting overseas training closer to Israel, across the Mediterranean sea.
Israel operates an aggressor squadron flying F-16s from the base in Ovda. For the recent exercise the squadron doubled the number of aircraft operated against the visiting aircraft, adding F-15I and F-16C fighter planes from northern IAF bases. A large instrumented combat range located north of the base is scattered with targets simulating active surface-to-air missile sites, radar emitters and electronic warfare threats realistically represented surface based threats and targets, offering modern strike fighters an excellent training environment.
The exchange is beneficial for the Israel Air Force as it offers the Israeli opportunities an important opportunity to train in dissimilar air combat, against unfamiliar combat aircraft they could meet at war. It also opens vast and unfamiliar training areas for the Israeli pilots, in neighboring countries, offering the Israeli pilots realistic and challenging missions at extended ranges – missions they canot perform realistically over their small home land.
For foreign air forces the training in Israel and with the reputable Israel Air Force provides an opportunity for pilots to gain unique experience in more realistic combat conditions they are used to in their training areas, particularly concerning electronic combat, self protection and engagement of surface-to-air weapons.

Israel, Turkey reactivate air force ties
By YAAKOV KATZ 12/21/2011 18:43
Mechanism suspended in September after UN report on ‘Mavi Marmara’ incident hurt relations.
Talkbacks ()
The air force has reestablished a coordination mechanism with Turkey that works to prevent aerial misunderstandings and potential clashes over the Mediterranean Sea.
Once long-time friends and training partners, ties between the IAF and the Turkish Air Force came to an end following Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip in 2009.
Despite the breakdown in diplomatic and military ties, the IAF continued to maintain an open line of communication with the Turkish Air Force to prevent potential misunderstandings when pilots from both countries encounter one another flying over the Mediterranean.
This too came to an end though in September when a United Nations commission, established to investigate the 2010 Turkish flotilla incident, determined that Israel’s sea blockade over the Gaza Strip is legitimate. It said however, that the Navy raid on the Mavi Marmara ship, which ended with nine dead passengers, was excessive and unreasonable.
A senior IAF officer said Wednesday that the coordination mechanism was recently reactivated as part of the countries’ efforts to stabilize and improve ties. Two weeks ago, the Turkish military attache to Israel attended an IAF briefing for foreign military officers at the Uvda Air Force Base on the sidelines of the IAF joint maneuvers with the Italian Air Force.
The officer said that the IAF would also likely invite Turkey to participate in a large-scale international aerial drill that it will be hosting in Israel in 2013. The IAF has significantly increased the number of joint-training drills it holds with foreign countries in recent years.
“There is nothing preventing them from participating,” the officer said.

Israel Cancels Air Surveillance Deal With Turkey: Paper
JERUSALEM - Israel has cancelled the sale of air surveillance equipment to Turkey over fears that it might fall into the hands of countries hostile to the Jewish state, the Haaretz daily said Dec. 22.
The report said that the contract was signed in 2008 with Elbit Systems and worth some $140 million.
Ynetnews, reporting the same story, said both the defense ministry and Elbit had confirmed the cancellation.
Haaretz's website said the decision was made "out of security concerns, principally in consideration of Turkey's ties with enemy states of Israel, particularly Iran."
It said the defense ministry highlighted that "we do not allow such advanced technology to fall into other hands, in this way the system can fall into enemy hands."
Export of any military equipment or defense technology is subject to ministry approval.
Haaretz said that, when asked about the cancellation, a security official said "ties with Turkey are extremely important to the state, but we have a security responsibility over any product that is given approval for export."
Once-flourishing Turkish-Israeli ties plunged into deep crisis last year when Israeli forces killed nine Turks in a raid on a Turkish ferry, part of an activist flotilla carrying aid to Gaza.

Marjorie Swec – JSSNews
