Dutch Navy to Fit New Submarine Safety Device The Royal Netherlands Navy has awarded a contract to Analox Military Systems for nine Sub Aspida devices for use on four of its Walrus Class submarines. The Sub Aspida is a new safety device used in submarines or decompression chambers to provide constant and accurate monitoring of oxygen and carbon dioxide in a robust unit that is easily portable. Analox Military Systems sales and marketing director Vicky Brown said the Dutch Navy required an accurate dual-gas monitoring in an environment prone to fluctuations in atmospheric pressure. Royal Netherlands Navy Lt Leppink tested the Sub Aspida in the control room of a submarine. "One of its most important advantages is the pressure-correct read out, which remained accurate even during rapid changes in the atmospheric pressure, making it a vital tool to have on board any submarine," he said.

The NATO Tiger Meet is an annual event held in a different place each year during which flying squadrons that share a tiger or big cat emblem come together. This year´s edition of this large-scale international exercise takes place between 4 and 15 October at the Royal Netherlands Air Force air base of Volkel. RNLAF´s 313 Squadron, itself a “tiger unit”, is organising and hosting the event. What started in the 1960s as a primarily social gathering has developed over the years into a highly sophisticated training event. Through highly varied programmes, the exercising units keep their skills up to par and have the opportunity to exchange valuable experience. Organisation
The NATO Tiger Association brings together units from all over the world that have a tiger or other big cat in their logos or emblems. The Tiger Meet is also intended by the association to strengthen the ties between its members. Although its name would lead one to suspect otherwise, the NATO Tiger Meet is not organised by NATO. NATO has included the event in its training schedule, however. The NATO Tiger Meet is organised by a different tiger unit every year. This year, the honour has fallen to 313 F-16 Squadron of Volkel Air Base. Organiser: 313 Squadron
313 Squadron, established in 1953 at Volkel Air Base, began its existence training new pilots for European navigation and weather conditions. After subsequent relocations to Woensdrecht Air Base and Twenthe Air Base, it eventually returned to Volkel in 2006 equipped with F-16s. Its training task had been transferred to 306 Squadron a few years earlier. At present, 313 Squadron is one of five operational F-16 squadrons of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Netherlands' Navy orders additional Gatekeeper system
The Dutch Defence Materiel Organization and Thales Nederland signed a contract this month for the delivery of one additional Gatekeeper electro-optic surveillance system. This system will be installed on the Netherlands' Navy's HrMs Amsterdam as a part of an extensive upkeep programme. Gatekeeper is scheduled to be delivered in the second half of 2011.
In the changing tasks of modern navies, fast combat support ships are also participating in maritime security operations, like the current anti-piracy missions of NATO and the EU. The increased situational awareness provided by Gatekeeper has become necessary for a safe operation during such operations as Gatekeeper provides a continuous fully automatic surveillance and alerting function in daylight as well as at night and during all kinds of weather.
The four Gatekeeper modules are not mounted in one dedicated mast but will be incorporated in the ship's existing superstructure, with three modules in the front of the ship and one in the back.
Gerben Edelijin, CEO of Thales Nederland says: “ We are very proud of the trust the Royal Netherlands Navy puts in the Gatekeeper's capabilities as this is the ninth Gatekeeper system under contract for them.“
Gatekeeper
Gatekeeper is a 360° panoramic surveillance and automatic alerting system based on IR/TV technology. It provides short-range situational awareness and ship security both at sea and in port 24/7 without crew on deck. Not only will this significantly reduce manpower requirements it is intrinsically safer and offers a less aggressive posture to the outside world. Gatekeeper will even increase situational awareness compared to human observers as it is not susceptible to fatigue and works better under low-light conditions or in adverse weather.
Gatekeeper is a very flexible and easy to install system, because of its modular sensor heads that can easily be integrated on existing and new-build ships, either stand-alone or as part of the Thales I-MAST configurations. Gatekeeper is presently under contract for the four Netherlands' Navy's Holland class patrol ships, the Joint Support Ship, the Johan de Witt class LPD and the four Belgium and Netherlands Navy's M-class frigates.

Netherlands extend Apache helicopter deployment in Afghanistan
Five of the Dutch Apache attack helicopters deployed in Afghanistan that were to return by mid-October will now stay until mid-November. The helicopters will be used for giving air assistance to ISAF partners and the Dutch Redeployment Task Force, the unit tasked with retrieving Dutch materiel from the area of operations.
The helicopters’ stay in Afghanistan was extended because some of the last large Dutch convoys were postponed as a result of damage to the road between Tarin Kowt and Kandahar. Moreover, the availability of air assistance in Uruzgan will soon be reduced as a consequence of operations elsewhere in southern Afghanistan. This would mean that air assistance available for the redeployment convoys would be insufficient.
Urgent
In addition, Australia has urgently requested the Netherlands to extend its deployment of Apaches, so that ISAF partners may also be guaranteed air assistance. This support will enable the Combined Team Uruzgan, the successor of the Dutch Task Force Uruzgan, to continue its work. The request also underscores the importance of the Apache helicopters, which have served in Afghanistan since 2004.
Air Task Force
The Apaches are part of the Air Task Force (ATF). This unit is further composed of four F-16 fighter aircraft which are primarily employed for protecting the redeployment process. The ATF previously also had three Chinook transport helicopters in its ranks, but their contribution came to an end in early October and they will arrive back in the Netherlands next week.

Boeing, Netherlands Ministry of Defence Sign Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Agreement
November 4, 2010 by Rob Vogelaar · Leave a Comment
The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and the Netherlands Ministry of Defence Logistic Center Woensdrecht today entered a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) framework agreement to expand the center’s capabilities and develop opportunities for Dutch industry. The alliance is aimed at ensuring the readiness of CH-47 Chinook and AH-64D Apache helicopters operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force, as well as broadening regional MRO activities through support of other military and civilian aircraft. “Enhancing our depot capabilities in conjunction with Boeing and Dutch industry will improve our mission to support the Dutch military’s Chinook and Apache rotorcraft,” said Air Commodore Peter Ort, director of the Logistic Center Woensdrecht, Directorate of Materiel Organisation, Netherlands Ministry of Defence. “This agreement also fits the ‘Maintenance Valley’ initiative supported by the new Dutch government to bolster the Netherlands’ position as a regional hub for military and civilian aircraft MRO activities.” Signing the agreement with Ort was Peri Widener, director of Army Integrated Logistics for the Global Services & Support business of Boeing Defense, Space & Security.
“Boeing has partnered with the Dutch Ministry of Defence for decades through aircraft programs including the Chinook and Apache,” Widener said. “We have demonstrated our international experience in delivering affordable, reliable logistics, sustainment and MRO solutions to maximize global readiness for our customers. We are focused on strengthening our ties with the Netherlands and contributing to the Dutch aviation industry and economy.” Today’s agreement follows a November 2009 teaming agreement between Boeing and the World Class Aviation Academy of the Netherlands to provide customers in the region with military maintenance training on fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. The Logistic Center Woensdrecht (LCW) is the Netherlands Ministry of Defence agency and center of expertise for air weapon systems, communication systems and mission support. The LCW performs logistics activities as well as system integration, maintenance, repair, overhaul and upgrade activities. With combined technical and logistic expertise, the LCW serves its operational users and other partners within and outside the Netherlands. Source: Boeing Photos: Rob Vogelaar, ZAPP

Dutch Apaches fly last missions in Afghanistan
Citation :
The Netherlands' Boeing AH-64D Apache attack helicopters will be returned to Gilze-Rijen air base soon, having flown their last missions in Afghanistan.
A short ceremony to mark the end of the six-year detachment was held on 12 November, with the aircraft to be transported home from Kandahar airfield.
Six Dutch Apaches were deployed to Kabul in 2004 in support of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, with five later relocating to Kandahar for a few months before being moved to Camp Holland near Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan province. The aircraft performed missions including reconnaissance, close air support and shows of force, and since 2006 were flown more than 1,200 times in support of ground troops, logging over 7,000h.
Following a decision by the Dutch government to withdraw its military personnel from Afghanistan, the role given to its Apache crews changed to protecting convoys redeploying assets for their return shipment to the Netherlands. They also maintained a quick reaction force capability to support other coalition troops.
The Netherlands Defence Helicopter Command has 29 Apaches. Flightglobal's HeliCAS database says 27 of these are currently active.

New Dutch jet fighters 1.4 billion euros more expensive
The costs of the Joint Strike Fighter, the US fighter jet which is to replace the ageing Dutch fleet of F-16s, will be 1.4 billion euros higher than the original estimate. This is an increase of 20 percent over the amount of 6.2 billion euros which the government initially expected would buy 85 JSF planes. Parliament expressed shock at the increase, particularly at a time when the government has announced 18 billion euros’ worth of budget cuts. On Thursday, Defence Minister Hans Hillen wrote in a letter to parliament that the higher costs are partly due to delays in the development and production of the first series of JSF planes in the United States. Rising costs of wages, raw materials, tools, and testing equipment also play a role. In his letter, the minister says that the latest estimate is ‘significantly higher’ than the current JSF budget, whereas the defence budget as a whole will be shrinking over the next few years. Mr Hillen writes that he assumes operational and maintenance costs will amount to nearly 10 billion euros over the next 30 years. There have been no recent reviews of these estimates. The JSF is to replace the outdated F-16’s of the Royal Dutch Air Force, but the Netherlands has not yet made a final decision on its purchase, even though it is taking part in the JSF’s development. However, the cabinet has announced it wants to buy a second test plane. In parliament, the Socialist Party and Green Left have said the Netherlands should pull the plug on the project. The SP points out that the defence budget has been cut by one billion euros and that the armed forces are going to sack 10,000 people. The party says the available budget should be used to guarantee good working conditions for defence staff, not to purchase an unnecessary jet fighter. The Labour Party is equally critical of the cabinet’s plans, and says it would prefer the government purchase an existing jet fighter. The party is opposed to buying test planes, because that is the first phase of a definitive purchase. Labour believes that Dutch participation in the JSF project will result in fewer orders and less employment than promised. The party says that revenue for Dutch companies will decrease even further if US production figures are lower than initially thought. Coalition parties VVD and CDA are sticking to the initial JSF budget of 6.2 billion euros. The parties say that if the planes become more expensive, the armed forces will simply have to make do with fewer planes. The two coalition partners also say that the new cost estimate has no impact on the current defence budget and that the purchase of a second test plane can go ahead as planned.
A definitive decision on a successor for the F-16 is not planned for this cabinet period. (Radio Netherlands Worldwide)

HNLMS Amsterdam to Côte d’Ivoire
The French government has requested Dutch naval support for the coordinating role that France is playing in ensuring the safety of EU nationals during the current unrest in Côte d’Ivoire. The Dutch Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence have agreed to the deployment of the supply vessel HNLMS Amsterdam.
The HNLMS Amsterdam will be deployed to Côte d’Ivoire for a brief transitional period, during which its primary function will be to supply the EU forces. If necessary, it may also support security operations. Due to the tense situation in Côte d’Ivoire, a number of preparations are being made to guarantee the safety of EU nationals now present in the country.
There are currently 32 Dutch people staying in Côte d’Ivoire. Since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised Dutch nationals to leave the country, 18 of them have done so. The Netherlands does not have an embassy in Abidjan; representatives of the Dutch embassy in Accra (Ghana) are in Abidjan to provide consular assistance to Dutch nationals.
The HNLMS Amsterdam had been on its voyage home after taking part in the anti-piracy Operations Atalanta and Ocean Shield. It was due into the port of Den Helder on 23 December. It is now expected to be back in the Netherlands in the second half of January.
