La semaine dernière, dans leur projet final avant de devenir officiers dans l’unité d’élite informatique Ofek des forces aériennes de Tsahal, un groupe de soldats a reçu une tâche complexe : développer leur propre logiciel en 24 heures.
Dans la dernière ligne droite d’une formation de 10 semaines de l’unité informatique de l’Armée de l’Air israélienne, les soldats de l’unité d’élite Ofek ont participé à leur propre version du légendaire 24 heures Hackathon de Facebook. Ces futurs officiers dressèrent des idées de logiciels développées en une seule journée aux commandants de l’unité d’élite. L’unité informatique Ofek vise à faire progresser les besoins technologiques actuels dans l’armée, des avions et des systèmes de commande et de gestion logistique et des ressources humaines.

Les idées présentées (allant du maintien d’une répartition équitable des horaires de service à la création d’un programme de conditionnement physique plus rigoureux pour les soldats) sont destinées à lancer de nouveaux programmes de logiciels qui répondent aux besoins actuels dans le domaine militaire.
“L’entreprenariat et l’innovation sont la clé des valeurs de notre unité”, a dit le lieutenant A, l’un des deux commandements de la formation de ce groupe de futurs officiers de l’unité Ofek.

“Le rôle de nos futurs officiers est d’exploiter leurs capacités de programmation pour le développement des forces aériennes et de l’armée israélienne dans son ensemble.”

De l’idée initiale au développement final, les soldats ont été divisés en quatre groupes de travail, chacun d’entre eux travaillant sur sa propre idée d’un logiciel qui permet de résoudre un problème existant de la manière la plus optimale et efficace possible.
L’un des quatre groupes a décidé d’aborder la question des cours offerts au sein Tsahal par le développement d’un logiciel qui permet de suivre les formations et leurs dates et de s’inscrire à des cours en ligne. L’objectif est de minimiser le temps d’attente et de rendre tout plus transparent afin que les soldats puissent se sentir libres de s’inscrire à des cours qui sont offerts sans aucun tracas.

Un autre des projets présentés impliquait un régime de remise en forme pour soldats. Les non-combattants dans beaucoup d’unités de Tsahal sont limités lorsqu’il s’agit de fitness, passant le plus clair de leurs journées devant des ordinateurs dans le développement de logiciels, les renseignements, ou d’autres unités qui sont moins exigeantes physiquement. Le groupe a lancé un logiciel où les soldats peuvent, pour se motiver et rester en bonne santé, trouver des cours de fitness dans leurs bases et ainsi créer des équipes sportives avec d’autres soldats de la base. Le programme appuie l’aspect social et encourage à un mode de vie plus sain.

Lors d’une discussion sur la pertinence de cette unité dans l’armée, le lieutenant O., le second commandant de la formation, a expliqué que “c’est bien plus que le développement personnel de nos soldats. Il s’agit de la progression de l’armée et de la vie des soldats dans son ensemble avec les idées et les logiciels qui sont développés et avancés ici.”
Chaque soldat dans l’unité d’élite Ofek signe pour trois années supplémentaires de service, s’assurant ainsi de pouvoir concrétiser leurs idées jusqu’à leur réalisation.

Citation :: ‘Israel strikes Hezbollah-bound missile shipment’

Israeli warplanes hit a convoy of advanced missiles heading out of Syria and into Lebanon where they were to be delivered to Hezbollah, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, in the Kuwait-based paper Al-Jarida (Arabic), the attack was carried out earlier this week in the vicinity of the Lebanese-Syrian border.

However, the report, which relied on an unnamed “official source” in Jerusalem, did not say whether the targets were in Lebanon or Syria at the time of the strike.

The Times of Israel could not independently confirm the report. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to answer questions from an Israel Radio reporter Tuesday morning regarding alleged Israeli strikes in Syria.

On Tuesday Lebanese media reported that Israeli warplanes and pilot-less drones overflew villages in south Lebanon.

Israel has warned that any delivery of advanced weapons to the Shi’ite militia was a “red line” that would precipitate military action.

Israel has reportedly struck several times at weapons stashes and convoys inside Syria since the beginning of the year, either from the air or the sea.

Most recently, on July 5 an airstrike reportedly targeted Russian anti-ship Yakhont missiles, which Israel considered game-changers if they were to be transferred to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Navy wants four missile corvettes to defend Israel's exclusive economic zone.
The Israel Navy is preparing a plan to procure four missile corvettes to protect the gas rigs in Israel's exclusive economic zone in the Mediterranean. The ships cost an estimated $400 million and systems that will be installed on them cost an additional $200 million. A senior Navy officer says that the plan is due to be presented to the government for approval in a few weeks.
The corvettes were priced after a long process in which the Navy obtained quotes from several foreign shipyards, including in Germany, South Korea, and the US. Because of the high cost of the Saar 5-class missile corvettes, four of which are in service with the Navy, the IDF decided to procure ship platforms designed for civilian use. This process should substantially lower the ships' cost, since a Saar 5-class missile corvette reportedly costs $400 million.

A senior IDF officer says that for the cost of one missile corvette, it will be possible to procure four large civilian ships and then train the Navy to respond to security challenges in the Mediterranean. The plan calls for converting the civilian ships to warships, which will carry a wide range of offensive, defensive, communications, and warning systems developed by Israeli defense companies. The Navy estimates that 4.5 years are needed from the signing of a contract to bringing the ships to operational use, with the first ship delivered within three years.
"The new ships are a fantastic answer to our needs to meet the new challenges in the maritime space," says the officer. "They can be used for routine protection of Israel's economic interests in Mediterranean, and when needed, to use them in combat operations. We've examined how other countries are protecting their maritime interests, and found that they all use this method."
A Navy expert familiar with the complexities of protecting offshore rigs says, "For the IDF, this is a reasonable demand to respond to a need in a huge region, where interest has grown greatly in recent years."

Citation :: Israel to transform air force command structure

The Israeli air force is to make the most significant change to its command structure in four decades, in a move which it says will allow it to better prepare for future challenges.

To achieve this, the current position of chief of the air group will be divided between two brigadier generals holding the posts of chief of aerial operations and chief of the air group.

According to the Israeli Defence Forces general staff, the changes will dramatically increase the air force’s operational capabilities. The shift is designed to provide the best possible response to the fast-changing geopolitical climate in the Middle East, and to the changing nature of combat, it adds.

The role of chief of aerial operations will be filled by Brig Gen Tomer Bar, the current commander of Tel Nof air base. His counterpart at Hatzerim air base, Brig Gen Tal Kalman, will be appointed chief of the air group.

The Operations Division will now come under the command of the chief of aerial operations, and will consist of three colonels who will oversee activities divided into three categories. These will comprise strike operations, defensive operations – including most of the service's active air defence systems – and joint operations with Israel's ground forces.

The Air Intelligence Group will also be augmented by a new operations division. This will oversee effective co-ordination between intelligence and operations in the air force.

The changes were made after a long evaluation of the operational needs of the air force, and to reflect that its scope of activities has been dramatically increased.

The change in organisation follows the adoption of the formal name Israeli Air and Space Force last year. "With the growing use of space and the long-range strike capabilities that have been built in recent years, the structural changes were necessary," one Israeli source says.

Citation :: First Israeli Hercules completes Bedek upgrade

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has delivered the first Lockheed Martin C-130H to the Israeli air force, after performing an extensive refurbishment including replacing the transport's centre wingbox and wiring.

Two years ago, the Israeli air force selected IAI to replace the centre wingbox section on a number of C-130Hs, as part of a life extension programme for the variant.

IAI's Bedek Aviation Group completed work on the first aircraft and returned it to the service. It began working on the second example shortly after. In addition to replacing the centre wing section, scheduled maintenance was performed to cut down the overall grounding time. The aircraft's wiring documentation was also updated to meet international standards.

Air force test pilots carried out several test flights to assess a wide variety of aircraft flight modes and expressed satisfaction with the workmanship quality and overall performance of the aircraft.

Bedek general manager Eli Hattem attributes the successful project to the company's long experience in performing such work.

The Israeli air force is reorganising its Hercules squadrons, as part of its preparations to deploy the new-generation C-130J. This process will result in the consolidation of its two existing C-130 squadrons, with its current "Elephants" unit to be absorbed into the "Knights of the yellow bird". The former will be re-equipped with the C-130J "Samson".

Aircraft retained with the "Knights of the yellow bird" unit will be those that have been upgraded in recent years, including the H-models that are now being upgraded by Bedek. Israel has 18 C-130E/Hs, with the older E-version aircraft to be phased out.

In June, Lockheed delivered the first Israeli C-130J in the USA, with the aircraft planned to arrive in the customer nation in early 2014. The air force is currently on contract to receive three of the type, while it has also made a formal request to acquire another three. The aircraft has a three-crew cockpit configuration, and will be modified for the future installation of some Israeli systems.

Citation :: Israel Air Force Plan Shoots for 10-Fold Boost in Bombs on Target

RAMAT DAVID AIR BASE, ISRAEL — The Israel Air Force (IAF) is revamping headquarters staff, planning procedures and air operations to support a 10-fold increase in the number of targets it can detect and destroy, the Air Force’s chief of air operations said.
In an exclusive interview with Defense News, Brig. Gen. Amikam Norkin said the institutional revamp — the service’s first since the 1973 Yom Kippur War — aims to shorten the duration of future wars while reducing demand for maneuvering ground forces through massive, persistent and punishing use of precision air power.
More than a year in the making and slated for phased implementation in the coming months, the changes are driven by IAF Commander Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel and his Expanding Attack Capacity (EAC) program.
Officers here say the program affects all aspects of air operations, from the orders received from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) General Staff to the pilot in the cockpit and maintenance crews tasked with turnaround time.
It also involves wholesale changes in mission planning, resource management, bomb damage assessment and the way the IAF coordinates movements with western coalition forces that may be operating in the region.
But perhaps the biggest driver of EAC, experts here say, is significant improvements in so-called sensor-to-shooter capabilities. By mating persistent intelligence collection with precision weapons, the IAF expects to generate an exponential number of new, time-sensitive targets during each day of future fights.
Once implemented, traditional waves of air attack should give way to an express train of precision strikes, allowing “first circle” enemies such as Lebanon-based Hezbollah and Gaza-based Hamas little time to recover from the initial shock and awe of previous campaigns.
“We’re focusing on the entire system across the full distance,” Norkin said. “The RPMs [rotations per minute] of this engine must be much higher to support a huge surge in the quantity of targets we detect and destroy each and every day of a future campaign.”
In an Oct. 21 interview at this IAF hub in northern Israel, Norkin noted that the 1,500 targets attacked in Israel’s November 2012, eight-day Pillar of Defense operation in Gaza doubled the number of targets attacked in the 34-day 2006 Lebanon War.
“In Pillar of Defense, our daily attack capacity was twice that of Lebanon, despite the fact that [Gaza] was a much smaller area and more densely populated,” Norkin said. “Now, when we talk about the northern area of operations, we’re aspiring for an order of magnitude expansion — maybe more — in the number of targets to be destroyed every day.”
Despite IAF sensor-to-shooter capabilities demonstrated by its destruction of 120-some rocket launchers in the last Lebanon war, Norkin said the IDF realizes it can no longer waste time and assets going after individual launchers. “We all understand that rockets will continue to fall here until the last day of war. A residual capacity to launch will remain with the enemy,” he said.
Under the new concept, Israel will focus on “hurting the enemy where it hurts the most,” Norkin said, referring to leadership, commanders and significant war-fighting assets.
“We won’t be able to push the enemy to the point where he can no longer shoot rockets and missiles. Therefore we need to push him to the point where he doesn’t want to shoot his rockets and missiles,” the IAF officer said.
In a memo to all IAF officers this month, Eshel described the EAC revamp as historic, complex and fraught with risk.
“Some have compared it to a marathon race which demands — while running — that we perform open heart surgery and still finish first,” Eshel wrote.
Nevertheless, the IAF commander said he believed his organization would successfully implement the EAC plan and that prescribed changes would be proven through concrete results.
Expediting the Endgame
Israeli officers and defense experts said the IAF revamp is an essential element in IDF strategy for expediting the diplomatic endgame through maximum destruction of enemy assets and minimal harm to uninvolved civilians.
“As soon as war breaks out, the hourglass is overturned,” Lt. Gen. Benjamin Gantz, IDF chief of staff, said of Israel’s race to achieve optimum operational gain while preserving domestic and international support prior to a brokered cease-fire.
With Hezbollah and Hamas vowed to Israel’s destruction and unwilling to entertain any type of negotiated peace, officers here insist their only option is to prolong periods of relative quiet between the inevitable outbreak of future wars.
As such, IDF strategy demands inflicting as much pain as possible through high-intensity combat and rapid battlefield gains to deter the next round of fighting once a cease-fire takes effect.
In an address this month at Bar Ilan University’s Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, Gantz cited the “blurring of definitions between terrorist and civilian,” particularly in the context of Lebanon-based Hezbollah, “where the living room and the missile room is in the same house.”
Future wars, Gantz said, will be “transparent” and subject to round-the-clock media coverage and international scrutiny. “Every irregularity of the IDF will be accompanied by attempts to delegitimize Israel.”
While commanders across all sectors and services must be ready “to activate maximum assets with ultimate force,” Gantz flagged a preference, when possible, for precision, standoff operations.
As the officer in charge of last November’s standoff campaign against Gaza-launched rockets, Gantz delivered significant results through standoff strikes without having to embark on broad-based incursion.
More than 20,000 active-duty and reserve forces were poised at the border for the real prospect of a maneuvering ground war. But after eight days of punishing precision strikes, Israeli political leaders were convinced Hamas had been sufficiently deterred and accepted the Egyptian-brokered cease-fire that ended the fight.
Assaf Agmon, a brigadier general in the IAF reserve and director of Israel’s Fisher Institute for Strategic Air and Space Studies, warned against mistaking Pillar of Defense as a template for future wars that may require ground maneuvering to support initial gains from standoff attack.
Nevertheless, he said operational efficiencies expected from the EAC effort should, in many scenarios, “lessen the likelihood, or at least diminish the duration,” of a costly and diplomatically damaging ground war.
“Air power assumes enormous added value in our defensive concept and in all Western cultures that are less tolerant of the heavy casualties that come from big maneuvering ground wars,” Norkin said. “It’s hard to stop the lethality of tanks once they start to move. In contrast, air power can be controlled in a very calibrated, surgical manner. It’s like a thermostat that you can direct as hard or as soft as needed or turned off entirely when it’s time to stop.”
Prescribed Changes
Organizational changes prescribed by the IAF’s EAC program call for splitting training, doctrine and operational functions now performed by Norkin, the air branch chief, into two separate one-star positions.
A new head of air operations will be responsible for planning and executing all IAF operational missions. The new one-star position, approved by Gantz on Oct. 14, will be supported by three bureaus, each commanded by a colonel and focused on attack operations, active defense and international cooperation. Training, doctrine and joint air exercises will remain the purview of the air division chief.
The IAF also will establish a new department for joint operations with other IDF service branches and augment the intelligence bureau that supports air operations.
“For the past 40 years, we’ve been working according to the same structure, with only minor patchwork modifications here and there. But the force implementation chain of command is different from force training chain,” said Norkin, the officer tapped to become chief of air staff — the service’s No. 2 slot — once changes take effect.
Norkin underscored the fact that in Israel, there are no separate Army and naval aviation branches. “This restructuring will optimize our ability to meet the nation’s steadily increasing air power demands,” he said.

TEL AVIV — Israeli authorities suspect Chinese involvement in a failed cyberattack targeting 140 top defense industry executives and program officials, according to Israel’s Channel 2 News.
The attempted attack took place several weeks ago in the form of an email sent to scores of industry executives and program officials from an unnamed German company “known to Israeli industry,” said Nir Dvori, the network’s senior defense reporter.
In his Oct. 27 report, Dvori said, “defensive measures” managed to detect and “close down” the threat before recipients had an opportunity to open the mail and release a Trojan horse embedded within the seemingly innocent correspondence.
“Defensive measures discovered the attack and thwarted it. The assessment here is that the attack came from the Chinese defense industry,” Channel 2 reported.
Myriam Nahon, an MoD spokeswoman, said the ministry does not comment on media reports involving cyber matters.
In interviews here, several defense industry executives confirmed that firms were conducting refresher training on protocols and procedures associated with information and network defense. None of the executives contacted agreed to elaborate on the incident or to identify the German firm that served as an unwitting delivery vehicle for the attempted cyberattack.
Retired Maj. Gen. Isaac Ben-Israel, chairman of the research council that led to the 2011 establishment of Israel’s National Cyber Bureau, also declined comment on the specific event reported by Channel 2.
Nevertheless, in an Oct. 28 interview, Ben-Israel said authorities here were unlikely to make public accusations or to elaborate on methodologies employed by suspected cyber offenders.
“Thousands of cyberattacks are directed at us every day; some of them more sophisticated and some of them less so. The problem is that as good as we are at detecting and thwarting such attacks and as credible as we are in forensic investigations after the fact, there always remains the problem of attribution.”
According to Ben-Israel, a former director of Israeli defense research and development, “cyber offenders unfortunately do not leave their signature in Mandarin Chinese, Russian or any other language. ... We can suspect, but we can only suspect; and redouble defensive measures for the attack.”

Au cours des dernières semaines, l’armée a tiré une importante quantité de grenades lacrymogènes dans le quartier, y compris dans les cours d’écoles, ce qui a empêché beaucoup d’enfants d’effectuer leur rentrée scolaire.
Mais dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi, les camions de l’armée ont ajouté une arme à leur panoplie : l’arrosage généralisé des rues avec des eaux puantes, qui ont envahi les habitations et empuanti celles-ci de manière durable.

The US plans to expedite the delivery of six V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft to Israel, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said. The Pentagon will reallocate part of the next production group originally destined to the US Marine Corps to meet the Israeli request for six aircraft. The V-22 is produced under a multi-year procurement, FY2014 budget plan is funding the production of 21 aircraft in 2014, including 18 for the US Marine Corps and three for the Air Force Special Operations Command. The USMC is intended to receive 78 such aircraft over the next five years. Israel will be the first U.S. ally to get the Osprey, which has excelled in combat operations in Afghanistan. “Israel will get six V-22s out of the next order to go on the assembly line, and they will be compatible with other [Israeli defense] capabilities,” Hagel said. but Israel placed a formal request for the six aircraft this week, following its annual budget review process. Hagel announced the US is ready to offer the V-22 to Israel in April, but Jerusalem delayed its decision until the biennial budget is sealed. Israel could get the aircraft within as early as two years.
Boeing is optimistic about the future of the V-22, hoping that the first export sale would further increase international demand for the aircraft, thus help the company to face the decline in U.S. military spending in the near future. Discussions with Japan are already underway, as Tokyo is increasingly aware of the aircraft capabilities since the Marine Corps deployed the V-22 in Okinawa.
Other countries briefed about the Osprey include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Brazil, Colombia, Singapore and Australia.

Citation :: Five Air Forces to Participate in Israel’s ‘Blue Flag’ Air Combat Exercise

U.S., Greek, Polish and Italian fighter jets are planned to deploy to Ovda Israel Air Force Base this month, to participate in the Israel Air Force’s ‘Blue Flag’ air warfare exercise over the southern Negev Desert. Over 100 aircraft and about a thousand air and ground crews are expected to participate. Israeli sources have not confirmed the specific nations taking part in the exercise but foreign sources have indicated these are likely to include Greece, Poland, Italy, the US and Israel (1, 2).
Each of these air forces have already trained separately with the IAF, and some were also deployed here for training, but the ‘Blue Flag’ will be the first opportunity for the IAF to conduct a multinational exercise of this scale, since Israel was excluded from the NATO ‘Anatolian Eagle’ exercise as a result from the deteriorating relations between Turkey and Israel in recent years. Foreign air forces have been flying the Eager Tiger and Eager Lion exercises in Jordan for several years but for the Israelis, the ‘Blue Flag’ is a first of a kind opportunity.
The exercise will employ the IAF Aggressor squadron based at Ovda, and scores of ground based targets and air defense assets positioned throughout the southern Negev, simulating a modern threat environment. While the aggressor role is similar to that of the US “Top Gun” school and ‘Red Flag’ exercises, the aggressor role is tasked on different squadrons every 24 months, thus keeping pilots combat ready and proficient in the IAF combat missions. The squadron flies F-16A Block 15 Falcons, in service with the IAF since 1980.
The exercise simulates realistic engagement with situations from asymmetric warfare engaging low-signature targets to full fledged ‘symmetric’ opponent, where opposing air forces required to operate in denied access environment, penetrating heavy air defenses and aerial threats. The aggressor squadron has been trained in simulating various opposing air forces tactics, particularly Arab aerial tactics, to train other squadrons.
The IAF conducted a ‘grand rehearsal’ in January 2013, deploying five squadrons to the southern base, simulating a surge in missions and operational tempo conducted over several days. For the actual exercise the visiting air forces will deploy to Ovda on November 13, for orientation and preparation, with the exercise itself staged between 17 and 28 November.

Le remplacement des Skyhawk israéliens se précise. L'avionneur italien Alenia Aermacchi a annoncé hier que le premier biréacteur d'entraînement avancé M-346 destiné à la force aérienne de Tel-Aviv était entré en phase d'assemblage final dans l'usine de Venegono.

Baptisé "Lavi" (lion en hébreu) par Israël, le M-346 a été commandé à 30 exemplaires afin de succéder aux TA-4 Skyhawk qui servent actuellement à la formation avancée des pilotes de chasse locaux. Le premier M-346 israélien devrait être livré à la mi-2014, selon Alenia Aermacchi.

En compensation de ce contrat, d'une valeur estimée à environ un milliard de dollars, l'Italie s'était engagée en 2012 à acquérir deux avions d'alerte avancée G550 CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) auprès de l'industriel israélien IAI.

Pour l'heure, le M-346 a été commandé par trois pays. Client de lancement, l'Italie a passé commande de six machines sur un besoin total exprimé pour 15 avions. Singapour a commandé 12 avions dont les livraisons ont commencé sur la base aérienne de Cazaux, en France, qui accueille la formation des pilotes de chasse singapouriens.

Le déploiement du M-346 chez ses clients a toutefois été retardé par le crash d'un appareil de présérie le 11 mai 2013, suite à une perte de contrôle totale par le pilote d'essai, qui a toutefois pu s'éjecter. Toute la flotte de M-346 avait été clouée au sol jusqu'à la fin du mois d'août et la conclusion de l'enquête accident à la suite de laquelle Alenia Aermacchi a dû apporter des modifications sur les avions. Il s'agissait du second crash d'un M-346 après celui d'un prototype lors du salon de Dubaï en novembre 2011, au cours duquel les deux pilotes avaient pu s'éjecter.

Cet équipement a été récemment utilisé par Israël durant un exercice de défense antiaérienne.

«Nous disposons de preuves que les Américains se livrent à des écoutes de nos transmissions. Il est de notoriété publique que les grandes antennes installées sur le toit de l’ambassade des Etats-Unis à Tel-Aviv sont destinées à cet usage», affirme Danny Yatom, un ancien chef du Mossad. «Tout cela n’est jamais discuté lors de rencontres entre professionnels du renseignement. Cela fait partie des règles du jeu, chacun évitant de soulever la question», ajoute-t-il. «Autant que je sache, le secret entourant les informations que les Américains recueillent auprès de nous est bien gardé, c’est l’essentiel pour ce qui concerne la sécurité d’Israël», poursuit cet ancien général de réserve.

Un autre ex-patron du Mossad, Ephraïm Halevy, confirme, pour sa part, que les Israéliens savent parfaitement qu’ils sont écoutés par les Américains et utilisent d’ailleurs ce «canal de communication» pour transmettre des messages. «En l’an 2000, à la suite de l’échec des négociations israélo-palestiniennes à Camp David avec Yasser Arafat et Bill Clinton, Ehud Barak, le Premier ministre de l’époque, m’a téléphoné des Etats-Unis pour soi-disant m’informer de ce qui s’était passé alors qu’il n’avait aucune raison de le faire, dans la mesure où je n’étais pas impliqué dans ces discussions. Au cours de l’appel, j’ai exprimé mon étonnement et Ehud Barak m’a demandé de me taire et de me contenter d’écouter, j’ai alors compris qu’il s’adressait en fait aux Américains, qui nous écoutaient et souhaitaient savoir ce qu’il comptait faire.»

Des batteries anti-syriennes étaient visées par cette dernière opération.
L’opération remonte au 30 octobre dernier. Plusieurs batteries syriennes S-125 ont été détruites au cours d’un bombardement d’une précision chirurgicale dans le port de Lattaquié, site militaire stratégique pour le pouvoir syrien. Les frappes portaient inévitablement la signature de Tsahal.
L’information avait d’abord été dévoilée par CNN s’appuyant sur des sources sécuritaires au sein de l’administration américaine. Israël avait vigoureusement démenti être impliqué dans cette opération. Pourtant, le magazine Israel Defense a désormais confimé que Tsahal a bien été à l’origine de ce bombardement, photos satellites à l’appui. D’après les opposants syriens combattants dans la zone autour de Lattaquié, les tirs venaient ce jour-ci de la mer. Ce serait donc la marine israélienne qui serait entrée en action.
Selon Israel Defense, ces batteries de fabrication russe subissaient une modernisation. Elles allaient donc constituer un réel danger pour l’armée de l’air israélienne pour continuer à terme à mener des opération aériennes au-dessus de la Syrie. Israël souhaitait également anticiper une éventuelle mise sous « cocon » des batteries sous la protection du Hezbollah au Liban.

The Israel Defense Force’s next generation of officers just completed a large-scale exercise preparing them for war in the desert. The unprecedented training taught them how to handle any kind of emergency on the battlefield.

Hundreds of soldiers from all parts of the military came together recently for an exercise in the middle of the desert. The inter-unit training was the first of its size ever organized by the IDF. Its objective was to ensure that cadets and soldiers will be prepared to act as the IDF’s lifeforce – supplying combat soldiers with food, water, medical supplies and manpower in the middle of a war.

IDF cadets participated in exercises covering a range of subjects – from medical treatment to urban warfare and airborne rescues. In just about every way, the training stood out among past exercises, teaching soldiers how to coordinate on a massive scale. The training involved hundreds of soldiers and almost 200 types of vehicles.

Through these exercises, the IDF cadets are defining the future of coordination on the battlefield. Thanks to their training, they will be prepared to handle almost any kind of emergency in battle. In the event that soldiers are injured, they will be able to bring equipment quickly to the field and save lives in the process.

Senior commanders believe that the cutting-edge training will result in unprecedented advancements. “When I went into a tank for the first time, I was leading a company of soldiers,” said Major Eli Gilad, head commander of the IDF’s Logistical Training Center. “Now, these new officers will come in with the knowledge of how to handle a battlefield beforehand.”

“The [IDF] does not consist of just one military unit,” Major Gilad said. “We’re trying to show them the complexity of the world of logistics so they will be ready from the very moment they go out in the field.”
