Germany, Israel sign €430 million contract for 4 meko class corvettes
May 11, 2015
The MEKO patrol corvettes designed by Blohm+Voss combine the fighting power of a corvette with the economy of an OPV ship platform. As the largest, most modern surface vessels to enter service with the Israeli Navy, the new boats are likely to receive a full complement of sensors, defensive and offensive systems, becoming the centerpiece of the Israeli Navy modernization program
The German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has signed today a contract to build four patrol corvettes for the Israeli Navy. Israel will pay €315 million of the €430 million contract, the remaining €113 million will be subsidized by the German Federal Government. Israel plans to use the new boats to protect the expanded Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ) in the Eastern Mediterranean, where recent explorations discovered major oil and gas resources. The new boats will be delivered over the next eight years.
The Israeli Government approved the procurement of the new boats as part of the security measures protecting those assets in the Eastern Mediterranean. Those security measures would include an array of unmanned systems surveillance and security systems operating in the air, above and under water. “This contract signed today is a significant event, representing a major increase in the defensive capability of the Israeli Navy, protecting offshore strategic sites located tens and hundreds of kilometers offshore” said Maj. General (ret) Dan Harel, Director General of the Israel MOD.
As part of the agreement, the German Thyssenkrupp concern, the owner of TKMS, will expand its procurement in Israel, buying goods worth at a value over €150 million.
TKMS is offering two versions of patrol vessels – the 1,500 ton Meko class 80 ‘Patrol corvette’ which is also available in 1,900 and 2,100 ton versions, and the 87 m’ long 1,800 ton Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV). In comparison, Saar V, the largest boat class currently in service with the Israeli Navy is 85 meter long and has a fully loaded displacement of 1,275 tons. The new Israeli boat to be designated Saar 6, will be a version of the K-130, a 2,000 ton class in service with the German Navy.
Depending on the type of engine used (combined diesels or diesel-gas turbine), the Meko Patrol Corvette can develop a speeds of up to 26 knots, but is also equipped with electrically powered motors propelling the vessel at a highly economical speed of 12 knots. At a speed of 14 knots the Patrol Corvette has the autonomous mission range of 4,500 nautical miles, representing a two-week mission endurance. The vessel is operated by a crew of 65, and has accommodations for 23 more. The boat has a helicopter deck supporting helicopters up to ten tons.

All Israeli F-16I Squadrons landed in their airbases earlier this week, following two weeks of intensive training with the HAF (Hellenic Air Force)
Eilon Tohar
In the midst of what appears to be a record year for the Israeli-Greece aerial cooperation, the IAF F-16I squadrons deployed in Andravida Base in Northwest Peloponnese Peninsula. The two weeks of intensive training, which involved many arenas and scenarios, were a part of a large-scaled exercise held by the Hellenic Air Force once a year.
"We deal with flying in unknown areas and in the face of new threats and it brings a healthy tension to the squadron", said Captain Or from the "One" squadron.
First-of-its-kind Cooperation in HAF's large scale Exercise The deployment was a part of HAF's mega training exercise that has been taking place for the past 20 years and is called "INIOHOS", a Greek word that can be translated as a "Charioteer driving a carriage". It incorporates the entire Hellenic Air Force, including the Greek combat F-16, "Mirage" and "Phantom F-4" jets. It is the first time the Hellenic Air Force has chosen to integrate a foreign Air Force into the training exercise. "Our cooperation with Greece increases every year", explained Major Gil, Head of Overseas Exercises in the Air Division. "It can be attributed to strategic processes in the region as well as to the successful work we do together".
One of the goals of the cooperation between the countries is mutual learning. "It is very comfortable to work with the Greeks also thanks to the cultural similarities we share. In addition, many of their systems similar to ours", added Major Gil. "They put more emphasis on the independence of the mission leader, while we bring our high operational versatility and resolve".
Military Importance For two weeks, IAF's air crews neglected their mother tongue and operated as English speakers in all senses. Apart from the linguistic gaps, the Israelis experienced flying with foreign forces that carry out missions differently. "At the end of the day we fly on the same platforms and all of us speak English", said Captain Or. "The piloting differences are bridged with comprehensive preparations to the smallest detail, from setting exact times for strikes to synchronizing communication systems".
Therefore, prior to the deployment, the air crews who were destined to participate in the training exercise went through a preparation workshop which included a week of flights and simulator trainings with dealing with optional malfunctions and weather typical to the relevant areas. "The Cooperation with the Greek military forces is of immense importance for the State of Israel", said Captain Or. "It also provides the IAF with high-quality practice involving new flying methods and forces us to generate mental flexibility and face the unknown".

TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel's High Command announced Monday the establishment of a new commando brigade to fall under the command of the 98th Paratrooper's Division.
Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkott, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff, announced July 6 that the new commando brigade would consolidate four elite infantry units of the regular army: Egoz (Almond), part of the Golani Brigade; Rimon (Pomegranate), part of the Givati Brigade; Duvdevan (Cherry) from Central Command and Maglan of the military's combat engineering force.
The new commando brigade will "improve joint operations of special forces in emergency [conditions]" and serve as "decisive front lines of the IDF against future challenges of the enemy."
Col. David Zainy has been appointed commander of the brigade, according to the July 6 announcement.
The brigade will be patterned after the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment, but will be commanded by the 98th Paratrooper's Division rather than a new Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC).
Elite commando forces such as Sayeret Matkal, the IDF General Staff's Reconnaissance Unit; the Shaldag (Kingfisher) airborne commando unit and the Israel Navy's Flotilla 13 will continue to operate autonomously under traditional command chains or, in certain special missions, under joint command of the IDF's new Depth Command, which reports directly to Eisenkott and the IDF General Staff.

U.S. approves a $1.9B arms sale to Israel; analysts say it’s probably meant to offset objections to Iran nuke deal
An agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program could create a bonanza for U.S. defense contractors who already are benefiting as the Obama administration tries to assuage Israeli and Gulf Arab concerns by cutting deals for more than $6 billion in military hardware.
The details of a potential deal being negotiated between Iran and six world powers — China, France, Germany, Russia, the U.K. and U.S. — would determine what steps the U.S. takes to help its allies. A nuclear agreement is likely to prompt Mideast partners to seek improved defense systems from American contractors such as Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp. and Raytheon Co. as well as weapons-makers in France and elsewhere.
“In theory, an Iran deal could lead to a reduction in tensions in the region that would reduce the demand for advanced weaponry,” said William Hartung, director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy in Washington. “In the short-term, a deal could actually boost the demand for arms.”
Gulf states and Israel have said they wouldn’t trust any pact forged in Vienna to curb Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. They also worry that if economic sanctions are lifted and Russia’s push to lift an arms embargo on Iran succeeds, that would let the Islamic Republic upgrade its aged military hardware. Those concerns could lead them “to seek more imported weaponry regardless of whether there is an Iran deal,” Hartung said.
Michael Rubin, a Middle East military analyst with the American Enterprise Institute, said an estimated $100 billion in Iranian oil revenue now frozen by sanctions “will make possible an Iranian military shopping spree that it will be near- impossible for Israel to keep up with.”
The U.S. is trying to ease the concerns in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said July 6 that the Iran deal was getting “worse and worse.”
The administration and Congress in May approved a $1.9 billion arms sale to Israel that analysts said probably was meant to offset Israeli objections to an Iran nuclear agreement. The sale included 3,000 Hellfire anti-armor missiles, 250 AIM-120C Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, and 50 BLU-113 “bunker-buster” bombs. Among contractors benefiting were Lockheed, General Dynamics Corp., Raytheon and Elwood National Forge.
The next step would be signed contracts, a process that could take months or years.
President Barack Obama promised Gulf leaders accelerated arms deliveries at a May summit he held to address their fears about an Iran deal. A final communique proposed development of a regional integrated missile-defense system.
“We really need to put the accelerator on that,” said Derek Chollet, a former assistant secretary of defense who’s now a senior adviser at the German Marshall Fund in Washington. “We will want to reassure our Gulf partners” that “their security needs will be met,” Chollet said.
Congress already has approved billions of dollars in pending arms contracts to the Gulf. The United Arab Emirates has one valued at $130 million for 1,100 laser-guided bombs, parts and logistics from Boeing and Raytheon. Another potential contract for as much as $900 million is pending for the sale of 12 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System launchers and 100 rockets made by Lockheed.
The Saudi government may pursue a contract for as much as $1.9 billion in potential sales of 10 United Technologies Corp. Sikorsky MH-60R helicopters, radar and spare parts; another potential contract valued at as much as $1.75 billion is pending for as many as 202 Lockheed PAC-3 missiles and associated equipment.
While Gulf nations would like a “commitment that the United States would come running, what they can get is deeper cooperation, more integration and technology transfers,” said Hussein Ibish, a scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.
Melissa Dalton, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the U.S. could speed up spending or offer new arms deals, invest more effort in improving Gulf cybersecurity for oil and other infrastructure and increase regional military exercises.
While gaining a qualitative military edge in the region wouldn’t be possible for Gulf states — that’s a privilege that U.S. law reserves for Israel — there are “a whole set of weapons systems, most of them defensive, that would be very reassuring,” Ibish said.
Facing defense budget pressure at home and competition from European companies attempting to capitalize on doubts about America’s reliability, U.S. contractors have reason to seize the opportunity.
Saudi Arabia is already getting reassurances from Washington, said Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. The U.S. is providing the kingdom with intelligence and logistics support in its war against the Houthis in Yemen, where Saudi bombing and a sea blockade have led the United Nations to declare its highest-level humanitarian emergency.
“In my view, we’re doing that much more to keep them on board on the P5+1 issue than it is anything about Yemen,” Riedel said, referring to shorthand for the six powers negotiating with Iran. “I don’t think the United States has a real dog in the fight between the Houthis and the House of Saud.”
U.S. efforts to assuage Saudi Arabia also can be seen in the recent move to remove limits on security assistance to neighboring Bahrain, imposed because of a 2011 crackdown on public demonstrations and human rights violations. “While we do not think that the human rights situation in Bahrain is adequate,” according to a State Department statement, “Bahrain has made some meaningful progress.”
State Department spokesman John Kirby cautioned against linking that step and the Iran talks, saying on June 30 that there was “no connection to that whatsoever.” “Certainly” there’s a connection, Riedel said. “Bahrain is a wholly owned satellite of the kingdom.”
Yiftah Shapir, who heads the Middle East Military Balance project at Tel Aviv’s Institute for National Security Studies, said items such as the Hellfire missiles and bunker-buster bombs are often sold to Israel in separate deals. Given the timing, “there’s no doubt that packaging them all together in one sale” was “clearly linked to the Iran agreement,” he said.
There’s been no discussion between Israel and the U.S. about a possible post-deal package to ease Tel Aviv’s concerns, and it will take months to craft one, analysts said.
“That discussion will only take place when it’s clear this deal will not only be signed by Congress, but implemented and implemented successfully,” said Aaron David Miller, a vice president at the Wilson Center in Washington.
When that day comes, “there’s lots of things the Israelis might ask for,” said Michael Eisenstadt, a military analyst with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, including help paying for V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft that Israel’s military recently had to delay for budget reasons.
“But none will assuage their concern short of” the U.S. Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a precision-guided, 30,000-pound bunker-buster bomb, and a possible delivery system, Eisenstadt said. He said he didn’t see the U.S. providing Israel with either the bomb or a delivery system.
Dalton of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said the U.S. could increase its intelligence-sharing with Israel and establish common “indications and warnings” to determine whether Iran is reneging on an agreement and to monitor regional threats such as operations by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Financial Aid
The U.S. could help with more financial aid so Israel can buy additional missile defense capability and more than the 33 Lockheed F-35 jets currently on contract, according to a Washington-based defense analyst who closely follows Israel and asked not to be identified discussing potential accommodations for the U.S. ally. Riedel said he was skeptical that any offers will ease Israeli frustration. “I don’t know what the president does to buy off Bibi,” Riedel said, using Netanyahu’s nickname. “I don’t think he can.”
Instead, Riedel sees the Israeli president taking his fight against the Iran deal to Congress. “That’s where the fight is going to be, and it’s going to be ugly,” he said.

Former Obama adviser: Send B-52 bombers to Israel In wake of Iran nuclear deal, Israel's security should be bolstered with means of delivering bunker-busting munitions, says Dennis Ross.
A former top adviser to United States President Barack Obama has called on Washington to provide Israel with B-52 bombers, following the nuclear agreement reached last week between Iran and six world powers, according to the Defense News website.
"To have a credible military option, it's not enough to say all options are on the table. We have to be much more blunt," said Dennis Ross, a former senior diplomat and adviser to several presidents, in an interview on Thursday.
The B-52 Stratofortress bomber is outfitted to deliver 30,000-pound (15 ton) GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators, also known as bunker-busters. Professional opinion holds that such weapons would be needed to destroy Iran's heavily-fortified, underground nuclear facilities.
Delivery of the bombers to Israel would bolster its deterrence and the credibility of its so-called military option, should Iran opt out of its commitments in the agreement reached last week, Ross said.
"Deterrence becomes a very important question as we move toward implementation," Ross said.
Israel has never publicly requested B-52s. "Intuitively, I don't believe this is the right answer or even relevant to the Israel Air Force," said Giora Romm, a former deputy commander of the Israel Air Force. "It's like buying a pair of shoes many sizes too large."
Also interviewed on Thursday, Romm said that receiving B-52s would necessitate building new runways and establishing an entirely new concept of operations and training that would be enormously expensive and of limited operational value.
Eitan Ben-Eliahu, a former commander of the IAF, said that Israel would benefit more from U.S. assistance in expanding existing or planned attack inventories and accelerated funding for new missile systems and Iron Dome batteries.
The B-52s, Ben-Eliahu pointed out, could easily be downed by Russian S300s, which are scheduled for deployment in Iran, and would trigger a conventional arms race in the region. It would also prompt Russia to sell "10 times more S300s to Iran," he said. "And by the way, they'd be justified in doing so."
Ross' remarks were the first public endorsement of an idea that has been bandied about for years. Language proposing delivery of aerial refueling tankers and bunker-buster munitions to Israel was included in the U.S.-Israel enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012.

Israel to form first squadron in preparation for F-35I
By: Arie Egozi Tel Aviv
Source: Flightglobal.com
Israel's first Lockheed Martin F-35I (Adir) squadron will be officially established in early August, as its air force advances preparations ahead of taking delivery of the type in early 2017.
A second F-35I squadron is planned in the future, and the air force is already examining the possibility of standing up a third unit equipped with the fifth-generation fighter.
"Receiving these aircraft is a pioneering move which also includes great uncertainty," the commander of the lead F-35I squadron, identified by the service as Lt Col Yotam, told the Israeli air force website. "The challenges we will most certainly come across and deal with by ourselves will turn into knowledge that will later be conveyed to other countries. We will gain a great deal of experience."
The conventional take-off and landing F-35As that will be delivered to the service are to be equipped with some Israeli-developed systems, which the squadron technicians are already studying.
US Air Force
In February, Israel signed a contract to purchase a second batch of 14 F-35Is, adding to a 19-aircraft deal signed in 2010. The latest commitment – worth $2.8 billion – also includes options for a further 17 fighters, which were excluded from the confirmed purchase following strong opposition from within the Israeli cabinet.
As reported by Flightglobal earlier this month, Israel is preparing a "compensation package" that it wants from the US government as a result of a multi-national agreement to ease sanctions on Iran in exchange for Tehran abandoning its nuclear weapons programme.
The Israeli list is expected to include the 17 additional F-35Is, plus Bell Boeing V-22 tiltrotor transports, Boeing KC-46A tankers and bunker-busting bombs that have until now not been exported by Washington.

Israel has completed an upgrade programme covering its air force fleet of Sikorsky CH-53 heavy-lift rotorcraft.
Launched in 2006, the enhancement work is designed to the keep the “Yasur” helicopters flying until 2025.
Modifications include the addition of new mission systems and avionics, as well protection and treatment of the airframe.
Israel Defense Forcea
Tel Aviv has previously sought to acquire Bell Boeing V-22 tiltrotors as a potential replacement for its CH-53s, but budget restrictions have delayed any contract.
Flightglobal’s Ascend Fleets database lists the service as operating a total of 23 of the US-built type.

Analysis: IDF breaks 33-year silence on M48 Tamuz missile launcher
Yaakov Lappin, Tel Aviv - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 06 August 2015
A senior source from the IDF Artillery Corps discussed the origins, development, and modern usage of the vehicle in early August, saying the concept was developed in the wake of the 1973 war, when Israeli military planners realised the IDF needed additional firepower to stop massive Syrian tank formations pouring across the Golan Heights.
To this end, the IDF contracted Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to convert three battalions (about 40) of its by-then obsolescent M48 tanks so they could fire the company's Tamuz ('Orange') missile. The first conversions were completed in 1982. This process involved the installation of a new turret with a launcher for 12 missiles, as well as an elevating antenna for communicating with the missiles during their flight.
Known as the Pere ('Savage'), the resulting vehicle is comparatively well armoured and has the mobility to keep up with the IDF's armoured divisions. It still has a crew of four: a commander, two gunners, and a driver. Once ordered to fire on certain co-ordinates, the crew launches a Tamuz towards the location, uses the live feed from the camera carried in its nose to identify a target as it approaches and then manually guides the missile towards it.
The manual guidance system restricts each Pere to having only one missile in the air at any given time, although a battalion of vehicles working together could potentially fire volleys at an enemy tank formation.
Notably, the Peres were fitted with dummy barrels to mimic a 105 mm main gun and give the impression they are still tanks. Syrian intelligence would consequently not consider the vehicles an immediate threat if it spotted them behind the front line, when in fact the Peres would have been in a position to bombard an advancing armoured formation with long-range anti-tank missiles.
This also meant that the existence of the vehicles and the Tamuz missile had to remain closely guarded secrets. The IDF acknowledged the existence of the Tamuz in 2011, when some details were released of the missile and the Hafiz variant of the M113 armoured personnel carrier used to launch it. However, the Pere continued to remain in the shadows.
Israel's security environment has changed dramatically since the vehicle's conception. By 2005 the threat of conventional war had faded, only to be replaced by conflict against heavily armed, asymmetrical foes such as Hizbullah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Nevertheless, the Pere has continued to play an important role in providing a precision stand-off strike capability that the IDF use to deal with cross-border incidents or engage enemy targets during full-scale conflicts. "The enemy has changed. It is now a small, rapidly disappearing enemy," the Artillery Corps officer said.
The Pere fleet has been upgraded to keep it relevant to contemporary operational requirements. The vehicles are now linked to the IDF's Torch command-and-control system, allowing them to receive intelligence on the co-ordinates of targets from a range of sources.
Unlike the IDF's Merkava Mk 4 tanks, the Peres have not been fitted with Rafael's Trophy active protective system. "As long as there is no need to move in [to hostile territory], it will sit away [from the frontlines], as it did during Operation 'Protective Edge', when there was no need to move into Gaza, as all targets were in range from Israel," said the officer.
The officer added that the vehicles can now be used to fire either Tamuz 2 missiles with a 15 km range or Tamuz 4 missiles with a range of 30 km. Rafael told IHS Jane's that the Tamuz 4 is similar to the Tamuz 5, which is the IDF's name for the Spike NLOS missile that the company has marketed internationally since 2009. The main difference is that the Tamuz 5 has advanced day/night capabilities and can be used with a semi-active laser guidance system.
The officer revealed that anti-tank and anti-aircraft variants of Tamuz 2 and 4 missiles are available. He said they use the same electro-optics, suggesting the main difference is that the former carries an armour-piercing shaped charge, while the latter has a fragmentation warhead that could be used against a variety of ground targets, as well as slow-moving aircraft.
The Pere's first operational use was not until 2005, when it returned fire on Palestinian attackers in the Gaza Strip. It then participated in the July-August 2006 war with Hizbullah, during which Pere units fired 527 missiles. In the 2008-09 Operation 'Cast Lead' against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Peres fired 26 Tamuz missiles.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2012, Peres deployed to the Golan Heights have carried out numerous strikes on Syrian positions in retaliation for cross-border fire. Most recently, the vehicles fired 433 missiles during the 50-day Operation 'Protective Edge' against Hamas.
While the IDF has not explained why it decided to lift the veil of secrecy around the Pere a year after 'Protective Edge', the move could contribute to deterrence, while also advertising the vehicle's existence to potential export clients.

IAI en route to extended range Barak-8ER
Robin Hughes - IHS Jane's Missiles & Rockets 09 August 2015
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is expected to unveil the extended-range variant of its Barak-8 point and area defence system within the next 18 months.
Boaz Levy, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Systems Missiles and Space at IAI, told IHS Jane's that the Barak-8ER (extended range variant) is currently under "internal development as a growth path of the Barak-8". The Barak-8ER - which, Levy noted, "leverages the current Barak-8 building blocks" - will be offered for both naval and land-based applications.
The Barak-8ER interceptor configuration was first unveiled as a concept at the 2009 Paris Air Show and is effectively a base model of the highly agile Barak-8 missile, with the addition of a large diameter solid-propellant jettisonable booster to the existing dual-pulse rocket motor. The latter is understood to be equipped with a thrust vector control (TVC) system. The booster's addition to the ER variant effectively doubles the down-range capability of the Barak-8 interceptor to 150km, said Levy.
IAI is flagging Barak-8ER as a completely IAI-developed system, including the interceptor. The current Barak-8 interceptor is supplied by Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, although IAI says that the Barak-8ER interceptor "might include some Rafael components, but essentially it is a completely new interceptor".
Levy said that for both naval and land applications the Barak-8ER system will be supplied with a modified six-cell variant of the eight-cell Barak-8 launcher, and that the Barak-8ER interceptor can also be adapted to other launcher configurations, including the US Navy's eight-cell MK 41 vertical launch system (VLS).
However, he noted that the system engineering solution for the Barak-8ER allows it to leverage the existing Barak-8 architecture: the same IAI Elta ELM-2248 S-band digital active phased array Multi-Function Surveillance, Track, & Guidance Radar (MF-STAR) 360º radar (the Barak-8ER land variant uses the rotating Land-Based MF-STAR system), the same BMC4I system, (produced by IAI's Defense Systems Division), and the same naval or land-based launcher - with some minor modification - used with the Barak-8. "This allows us to offer an expanded engagement envelope to the current system, with minimal hardware changes," Levy said.
Designed to engage multiple beyond visual range threats, the low launch signature Barak-8ER is understood to retain the same autopilot/inertial navigation system and active radar seeker guidance as the Barak-8, although some modifications to the software and to the missile control surfaces are likely. The booster increases the length of the missile at launch from its current 4.5 m to nearly 6 m, although the length in flight after the booster has been jettisoned may be slightly less than the base Barak-8 missile, if a TVC is not present. The missile diameter and fin spans are thought to be the same as the base Barak-8. The booster weight is currently unknown, although the missile's weight after the booster has been jettisoned is the same as that for the current Barak-8 configuration.
Levy said that initial operational capability (IOC) for Barak-8ER will first be declared for the naval variant, followed by IOC for the land variant. He declined to comment on a launch customer for Barak-8ER, but noted "existing Barak-8 customers will be interested in this configuration because it offers additional capability to their current system". Levy would not speculate on Barak-8ER as a future option for the Israel Navy's Sa'ar class corvettes, or the Indian Navy's Project 15E Kolkata-class destroyers, which are set to be equipped with the Barak-8 system.

Israeli air force looks for lift from CH-53K By: ARIE EGOZITEL AVIV Source: Flightglobal.com 19 hours ago The Israeli air force has formalised an operational requirement for Sikorsky's CH-53K heavy transport helicopter, with the type listed as a "very high priority" item for the service.
While the Bell Boeing V-22 tiltrotor is on the air force's immediate shopping list, a senior officer tells Flightglobal that "the CH-53K will be part of our future helicopter fleet", due to its heavy-lift credentials. This will enable Israel's military to perform missions that only this platform is capable of, the source adds.
The Israeli air force has recently completed a "Yasur" upgrade programme on its legacy fleet of CH-53s, which is intended to enable the type to remain in operational service until at least 2025.
Development of the CH-53K has encountered delays, with Sikorsky now expecting the new-generation model to achieve initial operational capability status with the US Marine Corps during 2019.
The "King Stallion" has a maximum take-off weight of 39,900kg (88,000lb), a projected cruise speed of 170kt (315km/h) and a maximum range of 454nm (841km).
