- Iran’s army overhauls fighter jets
Iran, which made steadfast achievements in the military sphere, has overhauled F-4 and F-14 jet fighters successfully.
The Iranian army experts overhauled the F-14 fighter jet after 35,000 person-hour work at the Shahid Babaei air base in Isfahan, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported on September 9.
Also, an F-4 fighter jet was overhauled after 70,000 person-hour work at the Shahid Delhamed Air Base in Chabahar.
In recent years, Iran has taken great strides in defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
Recently, the country has successfully test-fired an indigenously designed and manufactured Talaash 3 (endeavor) missile defense system.
Earlier, Iranian armed forces unveiled two marine cruise missiles, Ghadir and Nasr-e Basir, as well as two unmanned aerial vehicles, Karrar-4 and Mohajer-4.
Iranian media reported that the production lines will enhance the range and accuracy of the country's missile systems.
Also, Iran's military officials recently said the country's army is planning to hold military exercises of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for the first time in the new future.
The Iranian media outlets say that the country has achieved great progress in the field of UAV manufacturing. Iran unveiled its first domestically manufactured long-range combat drone, the Karrar (Striker), on August 23, 2010. Since then the country has manufactured a variety of other high-tech surveillance and combat unmanned aerial vehicles. The country showcased its largest yet home-made UAV, titled 'Fotros' last November.
The first Iranian medium-altitude long-endurance UAV, the Shahed-129 was unveiled in September 2012, which is capable of carrying out combat and reconnaissance missions for 24 hours.
Iran started mass production of the "Yasir" UAV in September 2013. The UAV is equipped with light powerful modern cameras, and can precisely control the target. The Yasir UAV can be used for rescue, military operations and for controlling traffic.
Iran has also conducted several military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.
Since 1992, Iran has manufactured its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, radars, boats, submarines and fighter planes. Tehran has frequently announced that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence. http://www.azernews.az

- Iran Unveils New Air Defense System, New Drone in Military Parades
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran on Monday unveiled a new home-made radar system, Fath (Conquer) 2, and a new drone named "Sadeq 1" during the military parades at the mausoleum of the Founder of the Islamic Republic, the Late Imam Khomeini, South of the capital.
Fath 2 is a fully home-made long-range radar system equipped with hi-tech. The radar system can trace all types of aircraft, drones and small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and alarms other air defense units when it discovers a hostile aircraft.
Sadeq 1 flies at a maximum altitude of 25,000 ft at speeds above sonic boom. The Iran-made drone has been manufactured for testing radar and electronic systems and training assessments.
September 22 is the start of the Sacred Defense Week in Iran which marks the anniversary of the beginning of Iraq's imposed war against the country in 1980.
The Sacred Defense Week, commemorating Iranians' sacrifices during the 8 years of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in 1980s, officially started on Monday with nationwide parades by various units of the Islamic Republic Army, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and Basij (volunteer) forces in Tehran and other cities across the country.
Different units of Iran's military forces marched in uniform before top Army and IRGC commanders in a show of military might and defensive power.
The ceremony was participated by President Hassan Rouhani and senior military and government officials as well as foreign diplomats, military attaches and reporters.
Typical units of the Islamic Republic Army, the IRGC, Basij forces and the Islamic Republic of Iran's Law Enforcement Police participated in the parade.
Foreign delegates as well as military and civilian officials were also present in the ceremony. Ranking commanders of the Armed Forces also took part in the ceremony.
The latest military and defense achievements made by Iranian experts were put on display at the parades.
In Tehran, the Armed Forces displayed Shalamche Hag missiles, Sky guard fire control system, Khatam fire control system, FM80 missile systems, Rapier missile systems, Troop-Scatter Communication system, various types of should-launched missile systems, S-200 missile systems, Talash 3 missile system, Hazem drones, Keyhan space radar system, LPD 20 radar system, and a wide range of other home-made missile, radar, launch and communication systems.
The Iranian Armed Forces have recently test-fired different types of newly-developed missiles and torpedoes and tested a large number of home-made weapons, tools and equipments, including submarines, military ships, artillery, choppers, aircrafts, UAVs and air defense and electronic systems, during massive military drills.
Defense analysts and military observers say that Iran's wargames and its advancements in weapons production have proved as a deterrent factor. http://english.farsnews.com

- Iran touts successful test of US drone replica
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran said Monday that it has successfully tested its own version of a U.S.-made drone based on one it captured in 2011.
State TV quoted Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the aerospace division of the elite Revolutionary Guard, as saying the test was carried out earlier Monday.
"As we promised earlier this year, a test flight of the Iranian version of the RQ-170 was carried out and a video will be released soon," he said. Iran had displayed the drone earlier this year.
Iran has said it managed to reverse-engineer the RQ-170 Sentinel, seized in December 2011 after it entered Iranian airspace from neighboring Afghanistan, and that it's capable of launching its own production line for the unmanned aircraft.
Iran says it has captured several American drones in recent years, including a Boeing-designed ScanEagle drone — a less sophisticated aircraft — after it entered Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf. Tehran says it is also copying the ScanEagle and plans to put its version into service.
Iran has accused the U.S. of using drones to spy on the country's nuclear program. The U.S. and other Western nations have long suspected Iran is secretly pursuing a nuclear weapons capability alongside its civilian program. Tehran insists its nuclear program is entirely focused on peaceful applications like power generation and the production of medical isotopes.
The two sides are currently struggling to reach an agreement under which Tehran would curb its nuclear activities in exchange for relief from crippling international sanctions.
Iran began a self-sufficiency military program in 1992, under which it has produced everything from mortars and torpedoes to military tanks, jet fighters and light submarines.

- Iran’s New Training Plane Displayed (+Photos)
The 7th International Exhibition of Aviation Industry, held on Iran’s southern island of Kish in November, saw a new training plane, dubbed K10.
The light aircraft has been manufactured by Iran’s Plane Manufacturing Company (HESA) in two different classes, K10 and K10-1.
With the flight ceiling of 14,000 feet, the plane can be employed for both training purposes and recreational use.
The plane is run with an Austrian-made Rotax engine producing 100 horsepower. Equipped with emergency parachute, K10 is a single-cabin aircraft that can accommodate a co-pilot as well.
Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan had already stressed the need for a home-made aircraft for training purposes in the air force units.
He had also noted that the new aircraft, designed and manufactured indigenously, flies at hypersonic speeds and could also be employed as a logistic plane.
In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
Azarakhsh (lightning) is Iran's first domestically-manufactured combat jet.
Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) fighter jet is a follow-up aircraft, derived from Azarakhsh. Iran unveiled its first squadron of Saeqeh fighter-bombers in an air show in 2010.

- New Warships, Frigates Join Iran Navy’s Fleet
December 01, 2014 - 13:26
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Two warships equipped with missile systems and 4 frigates for maritime patrol joined the Iranian Navy’s fleet on Monday.
Speaking to reporters in Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Monday, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the two warships, a Sirik-class and a Kalat-class, have been equipped with surface-to-surface missile systems.
He also noted that the four frigates, dubbed Fajr, Shams, Fath and Nour, are employed for maritime patrol operations, adding that they are armed with “sensitive and indigenous missiles.”
“Given their small size, the frigates are hidden from the enemy’s radars, and this increases our missile capability,” the commander explained.
Also, Rear Admiral Abbas Zamini, a senior Navy commander said 10 Iranian vessels have been equipped with Nour, Qader and Nasr cruise missile systems.
The new vessels came into service one day after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei emphasized the necessity for incessant progress of the Iranian Armed Forces.
On Sunday, the Leader pointed to Iran’s long water borders and the huge investment the enemies have made in the region around the country, stressing, “The Navy should continue playing its major and significant role in safeguarding the national security and public defense and protecting the country’s rigid borders through the up-to-date boost to the military preparedness and capabilities.”

- Iran has conducted air strikes against Islamic State (IS) in eastern Iraq in recent days, a Pentagon spokesman says.
Rear Adm John Kirby said the US, which has conducted its own air strikes in Iraq, was not co-ordinating with Iran.
Without confirming the air strikes directly, a top Iranian official also dismissed talk of co-operation.
Representatives of the US-led international coalition against IS are gathering at Nato headquarters in Brussels for a summit.
The talks chaired by US Secretary of State John Kerry will discuss military strategy as well as ways to stem the flow of foreign fighters joining IS and how to counter its propaganda, officials told AFP news agency.
The ministers meeting will discuss ways to send "counter-messages" to de-legitimise IS, which has been adept at using social media to promote its cause, an unnamed senior US state department official told AFP.
"As we are able to de-legitimise [IS], we are able to turn populations against [IS], reduce their recruiting basis," he added. 'Nothing changed'
The US has said it would be inappropriate for Iran to join the coalition, even though the two long-time adversaries face a common enemy in IS.
A jet filmed over Iraq by Qatari-based broadcaster Al-Jazeera has been identified by Jane's Defence Weekly as an Iranian Phantom.
Rear Adm Kirby's comments followed reports that American-made F4 Phantom jets from the Iranian air force had been targeting IS positions in the eastern Iraqi province of Diyala.
"We have indications that they did indeed fly air strikes with F-4 Phantoms in the past several days," he said.
It was up to Iraq to oversee and co-ordinate flights by different countries in its airspace, he added.
"We are flying missions over Iraq, we co-ordinate with the Iraqi government as we conduct those," he said. "It's up to the Iraqi government to de-conflict that airspace."
"Nothing has changed about our policy of not co-ordinating military activity with the Iranians." 'No place for US'
The Deputy Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Brig-Gen Massoud Jazayeri was quoted as telling Iran's Fars news agency it was "totally untrue" that Iran had cooperated with the coalition in bombing IS targets.
He said Iran considered the US responsible for Iraq's "unrest and problems" and that the US would "definitely not have a place in the future of that country".
Shia Muslim-ruled Iran has close ties to Iraq's Shia-led government, which struggled to counter IS militants as they seized swathes of territory in northern and western Iraq.
Military analysts said earlier this year that Iran was supplying Iraq with Soviet-built Sukhoi Su-25 attack jets to help in the fight against IS.
Shia militias trained and funded by Iran have also been sent to Iraq to support Kurdish fighters battling IS militants.
Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, the US and Iran have had a fraught relationship.
Washington severed ties the following year after Iranian students occupied the US embassy in Tehran and took 52 Americans hostage. They were freed in 1981.

- Iranian Navy's AB-212 Helicopters Destroy Targets in Massive Wargames
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Navy's AB-212 helicopters, equipped with machine-guns and rocket-launching systems, fired at specified targets and destroyed them on the sixth day of the Mohammad Rasoulallah (PBUH) drills on Tuesday.
It was the first time that the Navy's anti-submarine AB-212 helicopters were used in operation.
The Helicopters were recently equipped with offensive systems by the Navy experts.
Also on the fifth day of the drills on Monday, Iran's latest home-grown torpedo was fired by the Naval forces' anti-submarine SH-3D helicopters.
The torpedo successfully hit and destroyed the specified sub-surface target in the waters of the Sea of Oman, Southern Iran.
According to Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, the torpedo, test-fired recently, was used in operation for the first time on Monday.
The torpedo was last month test-fired in Jask region, Southern Iran, and can be fired from submarines, surface vessels and helicopters.
2 anti-subsurface SH-3D helicopters which were delivered to the Navy on December 1 were equipped with the torpedoes.
In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
Different units of the Iranian Army's Ground Force, Navy, Air Force and Air Defense started massive joint military drills along the country's Southern and Southeastern coasts on Thursday.
The military exercises codenamed Mohammad Rasoulallah (PBUH) cover an area of 2.2 million square kilometers from the East of the Strait of Hormuz to the Southern parts of the Gulf of Aden.
The Iranian Navy on Sunday launched its newly-developed mine laying and sweeping system on the fourth day of the wargames underway in the Southern and Southeastern parts of Iran.
On the fourth day of the drills, the Iranian Navy rolled mines in the Sea of Oman and the area where the exercises are staged to prevent hypothetical enemies' infiltration into the territorial waters.
Various flying units, surface vessels, high-speed boats, heavy Tareq-class submarines and indigenized and optimized vessels were used in the drills on Sunday.
After rolling the mines, the Iranian Naval forces defused them using minesweeping RH helicopters to provide security for the cargo ships and oil tankers and keeping the shipping lines open.
The Navy's new integrated mine laying and sweeper system was then unveiled in a ceremony participated by Rear Admiral Sayyari.
Iran is among the few world countries with advanced minesweeping capabilities. http://english.farsnews.com

- Iran claims to have built the ‘Real Iron Dome’ Missile Defense System
Iranian officials are touting the efficiency of a new national missile defense system that has been dubbed Iran’s “real Iron Dome,” a reference to the joint U.S.-Israeli missile shield that protects the Jewish state from incoming terrorist rockets.
Tehran also has begun to mass-produce its own fighter jets, as well as suicide combat drones and what it dubbed “the world’s first missile evading drone,” according to recent announcements made by the country’s military and political leaders.
Iran first revealed in August that it was gearing up to deploy a mid-range and long-range missile defense system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome. That system is now said to have been activated, according to Iranian officials.
“Today Iran’s Air Defense System has provided our country with an Iron Dome in its real sense and Iran’s airspace is the safest in the region,” Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabifard, the vice-speaker of Iran’s parliament, was quoted as telling reporters in Tehran on Monday.
Aboutorabifard claimed that the defense system boasts the “highest deterrence power in the region,” according to remarks reported by Iran’s state-controlled Fars News Agency.
While Iran has yet to provide footage of the system in action, military leaders claimed last year that it would combine artillery and radar systems capable of destroying incoming rockets in mid-air, just as Israel’s Iron Dome system does.
Iran also continues to build up its military hardware as nuclear negotiations with the West carry on through June.
Tehran claims to have built “the world’s first missile evading drone.”
The domestically produced drone reportedly has self-destructive capabilities, “can “escape thermal and air-to-air missiles,” and is capable of preventing missiles from getting within 250 meters of it, according to Fars, which interviewed the scientist who built the weapon.
Iranian military leaders also announced on Wednesday that the country had begun to mass-produce squadrons of fighter jets, according to Fars.
The country also tested three new suicide combat drones during recent war games, according to an Iranian commander.
The unmanned drones are said to act similar to cruise missiles and be capable of flying for eight hours.

- Iran begins mass production of Saeghe fighter
Iran has begun mass production of the Saeghe (Thunderbolt) indigenously developed combat aircraft, state media announced on 7 January.
Quoting an Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) spokesperson, the Fars News Agency reported that the country now has 'several squadrons' of the Northrop F-5E Tiger II-derived aircraft in operational service. Prior to the report, the IRIAF was understood to have only about three Saeghe fighters flying with the 23rd Fighter Squadron, based at Tabriz in the far northwest of the country.
First revealed in 2007, the Saeghe is essentially an F-5E (141 of which were procured by the Shah of Iran prior to the revolution in 1979, with 31 still believed to be flying) that has been modified by Hevapeimasazi (Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Company: HESA).
The Saeghe's most obvious modification is the twin-fin configuration that is similar to that of the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet series of aircraft. Indeed, Iranian officials have previously said that the Saeghe's performance is comparable to the Hornet's, although such claims cannot be independently verified.
While it is not known to what extent the aircraft's engines or avionics have been modified, IHS Jane's understands that Russia has supplied many internal systems, and some Grumman F-14A Tomcat and MiG-29 'Fulcrum' components may also have been adapted for the jet.
It is not clear how many of the IRIAF's F-5Es will undergo the Saeghe conversion, but Iranian media has previously reported that 24 such aircraft are planned. While Iranian media has been touting an improved version of the Saeghe since early 2014, no such aircraft has yet been revealed. ANALYSIS
With Iran being unable to procure modern fighters due to an arms embargo that has been in place since the fall of the Shah in 1979, the Islamic Republic has been forced to resort to other means to not only maintain its existing inventory of largely US aircraft types, but also to develop 'new' models such as the Saeghe.
Over recent years, Iran's leaders have heralded the development of a number of such indigenously platforms, including fighters and maritime patrol aircraft, as well as attack and utility helicopters.
In terms of fighters, besides the Saeghe the IRIAF has revealed the Simorgh (essentially an F-5A that has been converted to F-5B two-seat configuration, with some sources alluding to a total of about 13 aircraft having been modified in this fashion), and most recently the Qaher (Conqueror/Omnipotent) F-313 'stealth fighter'.
The Iranian aerospace sector has had undoubted success in reverse engineering Western technologies (most likely with Russian and Chinese assistance) in the development of such platforms, but the rollout of the F-313 in early 2013 was met with almost universal derision, with design features that showed the aircraft to be fundamentally flawed.
Even so, necessity will ensure that Iran will continue to persevere in its efforts to develop its indigenous aerospace capabilities, as evidenced by the disclosure that it has obtained a Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon from Venezuela to reverse engineer its technologies.
While some of its efforts, such as the F-313, might fall well short of the mark, others, such as the Saeghe, will no doubt prove to be altogether more successful in ensuring that the country is able to maintain its air-defence capabilities in the face of the continuing arms embargo.
