Iran’s New Drone Makes Maiden Flight
January 10, 2015 - 18:24 TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran flew a new homegrown Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), dubbed Homa, suitably equipped for patrol and reconnaissance missions. printPrint
Furnished with cameras for both day and night, the pilotless aircraft can send online data to a ground control station.
Homa has been manufactured in two models. The maximum takeoff weight of Homa-2 is 260 kilograms, raising speculation that it could also be armed with missiles or bombs for combat operations.
Built with a fixed skid for landing, Homa is able to take off both on a launcher or from the runway.
Information about the new drone’s engine are still undisclosed.
Homa-2’s operating radius has been extended to 100 kilometers and the flight endurance has reached 12 hours, up from 4-6 hours in Homa-1.
With a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour, Homa-2’s wingspan measures 9.46 meters.
The Iranian drone is seemingly much similar to a US aircraft, known as RQ-7 Shadow, albeit with greater capabilities.
Back in December 2012, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh had said Iran had already obtained models of two US UAVs, namely the ScanEagle and the RQ-7 Shadow.
The Islamic Republic has a broad range of UAVs which can be used for both civilian and military purposes.
In November 2014, the Iranian version of the US advanced RQ-170 drone made maiden flight.
Experts at the IRGC Aerospace Force manufactured the stealth drone through reverse engineering.
On December 4, 2011, an American Lockheed Martin RQ-170 sentinel drone was captured by Iranian forces near the city of Kashmar in northeastern Iran.
The drone was brought down by the Iranian Armed Forces’ electronic warfare unit which commandeered the aircraft and safely landed it.

Iran’s New Aircraft Successfully Passes Wind Tunnel Test January 17, 2015 - 15:11 TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian experts have successfully tested a new domestically-made fighter aircraft, named 'Borhan', in the country’s national wind tunnel facility.
The Borhan fighter, which is also known as B92, has been completely manufactured by the Iranian military experts and has successfully passed wind tunnel tests.
Currently, 70 percent of the detail design of the fighter, which is an updated and optimized version of Shafaq fighter, has been completed and its mock-up has been also manufactured.
Some changes have been made in the design of the aircraft to boost its capabilities, compared to Shafaq fighter, including its vertical tail as well as the airfoil of its wings.
The Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.
Tehran has always assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to the regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

Russia and Iran sign defense deal, 'may resolve' S300 missile delivery issue
Moscow and Tehran have signed military cooperation deal that implies wider collaboration in personnel training and counter-terrorism activities. It may also resolve the situation concerning the delivery of Russian S300 missiles, Iranian media reported.
Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan, signed the document during a visit by Russia’s top brass to Iran’s capital on Tuesday.
Under the new agreement, the broadened cooperation will include military personnel training exchanges, increased counter-terrorism cooperation and enhanced capabilities for both countries’ Navies to use each other’s ports more frequently.
According to the Iranian news agency FARS, the two sides have also resolved problems concerning the delivery of Russia's S300 missile defense systems to Iran. However, Moscow is yet to make an official comment regarding the defense system.
The $800 million contract to deliver S300 air defense missile systems to Iran was cancelled in 2010 by then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, to fall in line with UN sanctions imposed on Iran due to its disputed nuclear program. In turn, Tehran has filed a currently pending $4 billion lawsuit against Russia to Geneva's arbitration court.
"The two countries have decided to settle the S300 issue," Iran's Defense Ministry said, as cited by the Interfax news agency. No further details have been provided.

"The two countries have decided to settle the S300 issue," Iran's Defense Ministry said, as cited by the Interfax news agency. No further details have been provided.
The possible renewal of talks concerning missile sales has been confirmed by a former head of the Defense Ministry department of international cooperation, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.
"A step has been taken in the direction of economic and military technologies cooperation, at least such defensive systems as the S300 and S400 we would probably be delivering," Colonel General Leonid Ivashov, who is also the president of the International Center for Geopolitical Analysis, said, which was reported by RIA. Sanctions from the West have brought the two countries' positions on defense cooperation closer, Ivashov added.
The new agreement is aimed at creating a “long-term and multifaceted” military relationship with Iran, Russia's Defense Minister Shoigu said, stressing that “a theoretical basis for cooperation in the military field has been created.”
The Iranian side believe, "durable impacts on regional peace and security" can be provided by the deal, FARS reported. “As two neighbors, Iran and Russia have common viewpoints towards political, regional and global issues,” Dehghan said, as cited by AP.
For Iran, the deal to boost military cooperation could also mean support in opposing American ambitions in the Middle East, with the two countries to "jointly contribute to the strengthening of international security and regional stability."
“Iran and Russia are able to confront the expansionist intervention and greed of the United States through cooperation, synergy and activating strategic potential capacities,” Iran’s Defense Minister said, which was reported by AP.

Israeli TV shows ‘Iranian missile’ that ‘can reach far beyond Europe’
Satellite images taken outside Tehran feature first look at long-range missile newly developed by Iran, TV report says
Iran has built a 27-meter-long missile, capable of delivering a warhead “far beyond Europe,” and placed it on a launch pad at a site close to Tehran, an Israeli television report said Wednesday, showing what it said were the first satellite images of the missile ever seen in the West.
It stressed that the missile could be used to launch spacecraft or satellites, but also to carry warheads.
The Channel 2 news report showed satellite imagery documenting what it said was Iran’s “very rapid progress” on long-range missile manufacture.
It showed one photograph of a site near Tehran, which it said the West had known about for two years, where Iran was working on engines for its long-range missiles.
It then showed a satellite photograph of a second site, nearby, which featured a launch pad, with the 27-meter missile on it — an Iranian missile “never seen before” by the West.
The missile is capable of taking a manned spacecraft or satellite into space, the TV report said.
It is also capable of carrying a conventional or non-conventional warhead “far beyond Europe,” the report added.
The TV report said the satellite images were taken by the Eros B commercial Earth observation satellite, which was designed and manufactured by Israel Aircraft Industries, launched in 2006, and is owned by the Israeli firm ImageSat International.
Israel has long charged that Iran is working toward a nuclear weapons capability, and has publicly opposed any negotiated accommodation with Iran that would leave it with a uranium enrichment capability for potential nuclear weapons use.

Russia in Talks With Iran on Tor-M1 Missile System Modernization
Tor is designed to detect and engage modern high-precision weapons, including cruise missiles and guided bombs. The Tor-M1s are deployed to protect Iranian state and military facilities from air attacks.
MOSCOW, January 29 (Sputnik) — Russia's Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol is in talks with Iran on modernizing the short range Tor-M1 (SA-15 Gauntlet) surface-to-air missile defense systems, the plant's assistant director general told RIA Novosti Thursday.
"Iran has been operating a large number of our Tor-M1s. We [Iran and Russia] are holding talks about a possible modernization of the Tor-M1. We provide [Iran] with spare parts and train personnel. The work continues," said Vyacheslav Kartashov, liaison for military-technical cooperation and government contracts.
According to Kartashov, Iranian experts "professionally operate" the Tor-M1 missile systems, and provide for its maintenance.
"The equipment is in an excellent combat condition. Perhaps, this is one of the factors withholding the potential aggressor," he said.
Tor is designed to detect and engage modern high-precision weapons, including cruise missiles and guided bombs. The Tor-M1s are deployed to protect Iranian state and military facilities from air attacks.
Russia completed the delivery of 29 Tor-M1 missiles to Iran in January 2007. In September 2010, Moscow joined the UN sanctions against the country, prohibiting almost all arms trade, in response to Iran's controversial nuclear activities.

Iran tests home- made helicopter
An official from Iran’s army has said an Iranian-made 14-seat helicopter has successfully passed its first flight test.
General Mohammad Ali Ahmadabadi, Managing Director of Iran's Helicopter Renovation and Logistics Company (PANHA) said now the final tests were carried out on the semi-heavy “Homa” helicopter, IRNA news agency reported on February 16.
Homa, which is the third Iran-made helicopter, can be armed with various weapon systems and get equipped with a radar-evading capability.
In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in military sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems, according to the country’s media.
In 2012 Iran presented two domestically made helicopters named "Panha 1" and "Panha 2."
Panha 1 is a medium-class helicopter model, capable of carrying 14 people. It is suitable for both military and non-military purposes. Panha 2 model is smaller, a light-weight class model, capable of carrying eight passengers.
Meanwhile, a senior Iranian commander said the country is installing Sepehr radar, which would be able to keep tabs on enemy bases as far as 3,000 kilometers away.
Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili, Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base Commander said installation of the radar has been completed by 40 percent, adding that the project is underway without any problem.
He said the radar helps Iran exercise "defense in depth" and shields the country's sky against threats. The long-range radar can intercept ballistic and Cruise missiles.
In November 2014, the first phase of the radar system was tested and assessed within one section inside the operational radius of the country’s integrated air defense network.
Over the past years, Iran has gained important achievements in its defense sector, attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems and enhanced the preparedness of its forces by holding various drills.
Iran, however, has repeatedly stated that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.
Iran has recently taken great strides in defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems. Iran has so far unveiled various domestically produced drones, including Ababil, Fotros, Hazem, Karrar (long range attack drone), Mohajer, Sarir, Shahed 129, Yasir and Zohal.
Since 1992, Iran has manufactured its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, radars, boats, submarines and fighter planes.

Iran Reveals Details of New Cruise Missile-Capable Submarine
The new Be'sat submarine will have a displacement of 1,300 tons and will be capable of launching cruise missiles as well as torpedos.
Iran is building a new submarine, called Be'sat, which will be capable of firing cruise missiles and laying underwater mines, the country's Fars News Agency reported.
"The Navy's new subsurface vessel will be ready and launched soon to enhance the Army's power," Iranian Army Commander Major General Ataollah Salehi told reporters in December.
The submarine will be 60 meters long and have a displacement of over 1,300 tons. It will have six bays for torpedoes and marine cruise missiles.
The Be'sat, will be Iran's biggest domestically made submarine. The Iranian Navy also operates three Russian Kilo-class submarines with a displacement of 2,325 tons and six torpedo tubes but no cruise missile capacity.

Russia offers to sell anti-aircraft missiles to Iran
Russia has reportedly offered to sell Iran powerful and advanced anti-aircraft missiles in a deal that could have an impact on nuclear talks approaching a deadline next month.
Sergei Chemezov, head of the Russian state arms conglomerate Rostec, was quoted by the Tass news agency as saying the firm was willing to supply Tehran with Antey-2500 missiles with the capability of intercepting and destroying ballistic and cruise missiles as well as aircraft. Chemezov said Tehran was considering the offer.
If the sale goes ahead, the missiles are likely to represent a significant defence against any future air strikes aimed at Iran’s nuclear facilities, and so could in theory diminish pressure on Iran to come to an agreement in nuclear negotiations.
Conversely, if the talks fail, a missile deal could raise pressure from Israel and from US hawks for military action before the delivery of the Russian weapons makes air strikes riskier and less effective.
Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, is due to deliver an address to the US Congress next week in which he is expected to urge the administration to take a tougher line against Iran.
The planned sale of a less sophisticated and shorter-range surface-to-air missile system, the S-300, was cancelled in 2010 after concerted Israeli and US pressure on Moscow. But since then Vladimir Putin has returned to the presidency in place of the more conciliatory Dmitry Medvedev, Moscow’s relations with the west have dramatically worsened over the Ukraine conflict, and the sharp drop in the oil price together with western sanctions have left Moscow increasingly desperate to find new sources of foreign currency. Russian arms sales last year generated $13bn (£8.4bn).
“As far as Iran is concerned, we offered Antey-2500 instead of S-300. They are thinking. No decision has been made yet,” Chemezov said, according to Tass. “I don’t conceal it, and everyone understands this, the more conflicts there are, the more they buy off weapon from us. Volumes are continuing to grow despite sanctions. Mainly, it’s Latin America and the Middle East.” Advertisement
In Geneva on Monday, nuclear talks adjourned after the latest in a long series of meetings between the US secretary of state, John Kerry, and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif. The negotiations are aimed at finding a formula by which Iran accepts curbs on its nuclear programme – particularly uranium enrichment – for a certain number of years, in return for sanctions relief. Kerry and Zarif were joined in Geneva for the first time by the head of the Iranian atomic energy organisation, Ali Akbar Salehi, and the US energy secretary, Ernest Moniz, in a development which negotiators described as necessary to confront the complex technical issues at the heart of the talks. Hossein Fereydoun, the brother of Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani, also took part in the latest discussions.
Diplomats from US and Iran, as well as the other parties to the talks – UK, France, Germany, Russia and China – are due to reconvene in Switzerland next week in an attempt to reach a framework agreement before a deadline of late March. They have until the end of June to fill in all the details of what would be a complex but historic accord.
US and Iranian negotiators characterised the Geneva talks as constructive, with progress made but still a long way to go.
Ali Vaez, senior Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group, said: “It appears that the final touches to a mutually acceptable formula for curtailing Iran’s enrichment capacity were added by Iranian and American nuclear chiefs. What remains is a similar solution for untangling the intricate spider web of sanctions.”

Iranian F14 Get New Radar, Missile System
Iranian experts have mounted new radar and weapons systems on the aircraft to optimize F14 fighter jets for future missions.
Deputy Commander of Air Force 8th Air Base Colonel Asqar Shafiyee told FNA on Sunday that Iran has mounted its hi-tech home-made radar system on its F14 fighters.
He added that the new radars are under durability tests.
"We have equipped the F14 fighters with air-to-ground missiles and with bombing capability to prepare the fighter for assault missions" Pilot Shafiyee added.
Iran still operates some Tomcats that are being modernized to extend their operative life. Domestic upgrades include avionics, weapons (R-73E, AIM-54A+ “Fakkur”, AIM-54A, AIM-7E and AIM-9J are among the air to air missiles adapted to the aircraft’s fire control system).
