- China sends carrier to South China Sea for training amid maritime disputes
(Reuters) - China sent its sole aircraft carrier on a training mission into the South China Sea on Tuesday amid maritime disputes with some neighbours and tension over its plan to set up an airspace defence zone in waters disputed with Japan.
The Liaoning, bought used from Ukraine and refurbished in China, has conducted more than 100 exercises and experiments since it was commissioned last year but this is the first time it has been sent to the South China Sea.
Though considered decades behind U.S. technology, the Liaoning represents the Chinese navy's blue-water ambitions and has been the focus of a campaign to stir patriotism. The Liaoning left port from the northern city of Qingdao accompanied by two destroyers and two frigates, the Chinese navy said on an official news website (navy.81.cn/).
While there, it will carry out "scientific research, tests and military drills", the report said.
"This is the first time since the Liaoning entered service that it has carried out long-term drills on the high seas," it added.
It did not specify exactly what training would be done, only noting that previous exercises involving aircraft landing and taking off had gone well and laid a firm foundation for future tests.
Previously reported training exercises have mostly been in the Yellow Sea.
China's Defence Ministry said on Monday that it had lodged formal protests with the U.S. and Japanese embassies after both countries criticised a Chinese plan to impose new rules on airspace over disputed waters in the East China Sea.
China also claims almost the entire oil- and gas-rich South China Sea, overlapping claims from Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Vietnam.
That dispute is one of the region's biggest flashpoints amid China's military build-up and the U.S. strategic "pivot" back to Asia signalled by the Obama administration in 2011.
China's navy said the mission was routine, adding that the Liaoning was still in a testing phase.
"This test visit to the South China Sea is part of normal arrangements for testing and training for the Liaoning," it added.

- Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning anchors for first time at new base in Sanya
China’s aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, has anchored for the first time at the country’s new carrier base in the South China Sea on Friday.
Xinhua said the Liaoning carried out its first docking manoeuvre Friday morning at Sanya City’s naval harbour in the southern island province of Hainan yesterday morning. It said the carrier would conduct relevant experiments and trainings in the new base.
The Sanya naval harbour is qualified for the docking and basic operation of an aircraft carrier, Senior Colonel Yang Yujun, the spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, told a regular news briefing on Thursday.
Andrei Chang, who edits the Canadian-based Kanwa Asian Defence Monthly and has monitored China’s aircraft carrier project for 20 years, said it’s predictable that Liaoning would go to the South China Sea for harbour training and winter tests.
“As a new carrier, it’s necessary for Liaoning to go to different bases for winter tests and harbour training because of different water temperature and water depth in different harbours,” Chang said.
“Indeed, the Liaoning and other warships in its fighting group also need to test the solar equipment on board in varied weather and climate conditions,” said Chang.
He said he expected the carrier to sail to the India Ocean to conduct more comprehensive naval drills in the coming months.
The Liaoning left its home port of Qingdao, Shandong for the South China Sea on Tuesday, passing through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday. This is the first time the carrier has conducted a cross-sea training voyage since it was commissioned into the People’s Liberation Army Navy in September last year.
The carrier was escorted by two missile destroyers, the Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, and two missile frigates, the Yantai and Weifang on its maiden trip to the South China Sea.

- Beijing's ADIZ allows PLA Navy to penetrate Miyako waterway
After the establishment of China's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the East China Sea under the order of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy will be able to penetrate the Miyako waterway — which lies between the Japanese islands of Miyako and Okinawa — and challenge the US domination of the Western Pacific, according to the December edition of the Hong Kong-based Yazhou Zhoukan. A source told the magazine that China's plan to establish its own ADIZ had been made right after the 18th National Congress last year when Xi Jinping was selected to succeed Hu Jintao as the leader of the party. The source, who attended a Oct. 24- 25 seminar in Beijing on China's relationship with its neighbors, said that China's territorial dispute with Japan over the East China Sea is no longer about natural resources, but strategic position, and Xi pushed forward plans for the zone four months ago under the pressure from the PLA. Japan is currently deploying its Type 88 anti-ship missiles to the island of Miyako to block the naval movement of PLA in the region, and it is time for China to establish the air defense identification zone to solidify its position in the East China Sea, the source added. China's annoucement of its ADIZ on Nov. 23 demonstrated that the country is looking beyond the disputed Diaoyutai (Senkaku or Diaoyu) islands and the undersea natural gas field in the East China Sea. Beijing is now aiming to penetrate the First Island Chain — which extends from Alaska, South Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan and the Philippines — established by the United States more than 60 years ago to contain the Chinese maritime power. Xi Jinping is thus challenging the US dominance in the region since the end of World War II through announcing the zone, the Yazhou Zhoukan said. By extending the new zone to the Miyako waterway, fighters of the PLA Air Force will be able to provide air cover to Chinese vessels penetrating the waterway to the open sea in the Western Pacific. The PLA Air Force has already begun to patrol the airspace, sending fighters on Nov. 28 and 29 to the region in response to military aircraft from the United States, Japan and South Korea entering the ADIZ, the report said.

- First carrier-based fighter enters production in China
The Shenyang J-15, China's first carrier-based fighter designed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, has entered mass production and has been received by various units of the PLA Navy Air Force, the Beijing-based Sina Military Network reported on Dec. 3.
Citing a video clip released by Shenzhen Satellite Television, the Sina Military Network stated that the original yellow paint on the fuselage of J-15 had been replaced by light grey. In addition, a logo of a Flying Shark — a nickname for the aircraft — can be seen on the its tail. On the nose of four of the J-15 fighters shown by Shenzhen Satellite Television, serial numbers such as 101, 102, 103 and 104 can be seen clearly. This indicates that J-15s have officially started production.
The Sina Military Network estimates that the production of six or eight J-15 fighters has been completed recently while between six and seven aircraft are still being constructed. As China's only carrier-based fighter in service, the J-15 plays a crucial role in the PLA Navy's ambitions to develop the combat capability of its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which up to now was without any fighters.
Based on the Russian-built Sukhoi Su-33 carrier-based fighter, the J-15 is said to be only a transitional aircraft, before the PLA Navy receive its own fifth-generation stealth fighter which shares similar capabilities with China's Chengdu J-20 and Shenyang J-31. China has nine J-15 prototypes in total, seven of which are single-seater fighters. Flying the J-15 from the Liaoning will provide Chinese naval aviators with experience in anticipation of operating more advanced fighters aboard the aircraft carrier in future. http://www.wantchinatimes.com

- 24 JH-7A bombers stationed at PLA air base closest to Japan: Kanwa
24 PLA JH-7A fighter-bombers are currently stationed at Weifang in eastern China's Shandong province, the closest Chinese air base to Japan and the Korean peninsula, says the Kanwa Defense Review operated by Andrei Chang also known as Pinkov, a military analyst in Canada.
The air force unit based in Weifang belongs to the 14th Regiment of 5th Air Division and the fighter-bombers carrying YJ-83 anti-ship missiles would pose a threat to Japanese naval vessels should the conflict between Beijing and Tokyo over disputed islands covered by the newly established Chinese air defense identification zone escalate. The range of the C802AKD, the export and upgraded version of the YJ-83, is estimated to be more than 250 kilometers, according to Kanwa.
Pinkov noted that China and Russia are world's only two major powers still developing fighter-bombers like the Su-34 and JH-7A, as the United States and United Kingdom have not developed aircraft to succeed their Cold War-era F-111 and Tornado.
Kanwa said the PLA Air Force has 96 JH-7A fighter-bombers while the PLA Navy Air Force operates a further 96. When planes used as training aircraft are included, China has at least have 200 JH-7As in service, Pinkov said. The fighter-bombers were also flown to Urumqi in China's far northwest to take part in the Peace Mission 2013 joint exercise with the Russian Air Force earlier this year.
JH-7A planes are also likely to be deployed to the 37th Air Division in Northwestern China aimed at deterring a potential attack by NATO forces from Afghanistan. Together with the HQ-9 surface-to-air missiles located at major cities such as Xi'an and Lanzhou, the JH-7A is crucial for the PLA Air Force to defend its northwestern border against US attempts at containment as well as in the Pacific. http://www.wantchinatimes.com

- New aircraft carriers to be built in Dalian and Shanghai
China will construct two conventionally powered aircraft carriers in Dalian and Shanghai between 2014 and 2015, a source from China's Central Military Commission has told Duowei News, an outlet run by overseas Chinese.
Under the Commission's Project 048, China aims to establish three carrier battle groups by 2020 so that all three major fleets of the PLA Navy will be able to carry out missions with the full support of an aircraft carrier. The two new Type 001A indigenous carriers will be updated versions of China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which was originally a Soviet-era Admiral Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier purchased from Ukraine in 1998. They will also likely be designed with a ski-jump ramp, according to Duowei.
Sources said that the General Equipment Department of the PLA has already signed a contract with the Beijing-based China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation to build the two carriers. The price of the two vessels is estimated to be worth US$9 billion.
China has yet to decide whether its J-31 stealth fighter will replace the J-15 to become the country's next generation carrier-based fighter, according to sources. The J-31 fighter entered service before the J-15, and is able to land or take off from the flight deck of the Liaoning. Sources said that a decision will only be made after the construction of the nation's second and third aircraft carriers is completed. This will give the PLA more time to think about the type of carrier-based fighter it will need in the future, the sources added. http://www.wantchinatimes.com
