Lijian is a copy of Russian drone: Military Parade
After China's first stealth combat drone, the Lijian, completed its first test flight on Nov. 21, the Moscow-based Military Parade stated that the drone — designed jointly by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and Hongdu Aviation Industry Group — is in fact a copy of a Russian design. The Lijian's 20-minute test flight was completed at an unknown test center located in southwestern China, according to China's Global Times on Dec. 9. Photos of the new drone first appeared on the Chinese military website in May this year, with the US-based Strategy Page reporting that the People's Liberation Army may have released the images to demonstrate its military muscle. China is catching up slowly with the United States and Israel in the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the US-based Aviation Week said. Taking the Lijian, Wing Loong and CH-4 as examples, the report stated China is able to design and produce various types of drones including hand-launched miniature UAVs and larger long-range reconnaissance drones. However, the Military Parade claims that China copied the design of Russia's Mikoyan Skat drone. It said the Lijian may employ a RD-93, the upgrade version of the Klimov RD-33 engine equipped by the Skat, as it is widely used in aircraft developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China. Huang Jun, a professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, dismissed the accusation that China stole technology from Russia for the development of the Lijian. He said the Chinese drone may look similar to the US X47-B navy drone and Skat, but added that all of the world's flying wing UAVs are designed in that way. According to the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, China currently has fewer than 300 UAVs, while the US operates 678.
First Chinese built Zubr class LCAC for Chinese Navy (PLAN) reaching completion
The first Zubr (project 1232.2) amphibious hovercraft locally built in China is almost complete, as can be seen on a picture that recently emmerged on the Chinese internet. The Chinese Navy has placed an order for four landing craft at a reported cost of 315 million US dollars. Two were built by Feodosiya shipbuilding company and already delivered, and a second pair of vessels are being built in China under the supervision of Ukrainian technicians.
Currently the world’s largest hovercraft, development of Zubr landing ships started in the USSR in 1978, and the first serial ship joined Soviet Navy in 1988. Its carrying capacity is 3 main battle tanks with overall mass of 150 tons or 10 armored personnel carriers weighing up to 131 tons plus 140 marines, or 8 infantry fighting vehicles with mass up to 115 tons. If not carrying armor, Zubr is capable to accommodate 366 men.
In total, 14 Zubr-class ships have been launched; only two of them remain in inventory of Russian Navy. Five ships were decommissioned , two uncompleted, and five sold to Greece for the Hellenic Navy and where they are generally used in support of Special Forces. With the recent Chinese order, the total of Zubr-class ships to have been launched will reach 18.
Taiwan and its allies are concerned that these platforms may be used as part of Chinese offensive against Taiwan. According to sources, the banner displayed at the back of the Chinese built Zubr translates into "Reuniting the Motherland".

Warming ties between Russia and China are reviving the arms trade between the two countries.
Engine exports for China’s warplanes remained at a relatively significant level throughout the past decade. China is expected to continue buying powerplants from Russia
One theory doing the rounds in the 2000s was that Russian-Chinese military-technical co-operation was going downhill and would inevitably cease altogether. Now, however, it is obvious that the situation has improved, with Russian military exports to China picking up again. The volume of exports has already reached the level of the 1990s and the early 2000s, and may yet beat that record.
However, one difference is how insignificant the arms trade is in the overall structure of co-operation between the two countries. In the 1990s, military-technical co-operation was one of the pillars of mutual trade, and served as the basis for their bilateral partnership.
After Russian arms exporters had broken into new markets in the 2000s, China’s share in the total volume of exported Russian military equipment decreased noticeably. According to published data, Russian arms exports to China peaked during the early years of the last decade.
China is still a major buyer of Russian weapons, second only to India. However, China is no longer crucial to the survival of the Russian defence industry. According to a 2012 statement by Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin, exports accounted for only 22 per cent of the national defence industry’s total revenues, while 45 per cent came from sales to the national armed forces.
This growing domestic demand, and new export markets, and diversification into civilian markets, has lessened arms manufacturers’ dependence on Chinese contracts, while providing Moscow with a significant degree of freedom in negotiating future contracts with Beijing.
The data available indicates that Russian military exports to China exceeded US$1.9 billion in 2011, and expanded last year. As for the newly signed contracts, Russia’s state arms exporter Rosoboronexport reports that China accounts for 12 per cent of the overall US$17.6 billion in new arms sales; this puts the total contracts signed with China at more than US$2.1 billion.
Of this figure, US$1.3 billion worth of contracts have been accounted for. These include a US$600 million deal to deliver 52 Mil Mi-171E helicopters, and a US$700 million order for 140 Saturn AL-31F engines.
These powerplants are intended for the Sukhoi Su-27 and Su-30 fighters previously sold to China, and for indigenous Shenyang J-11B/BS, J-15 and J-16 warplanes.
No one really knows the nature of the contracts for the remaining US$800 million, but may assume that these represent a number of relatively minor orders.
Aero engine exports to China stayed at a relatively significant level throughout the past decade. Sources in the Chinese aerospace industry say the country will continue to buy powerplants from Russia at the same rate in the years to come.
In fact, the number of newly ordered engines may even grow. While Chinese air-framers have achieved impressive results, the country’s military warplane engine technology remains at a relatively low level of development. All the three indigenous fourth-generation fighter designs are powered by Russian engines: the AL-31F for the J-11B, the Saturn AL-31FN for the Chengdu J-10, and the Klimov RD-93 for the CAC FC-1.
China’s newest Xian H-6K long-range bomber is also fitted with Russian engines of the Soloviev D-30KP2 design. The country’s two fifth-generation fighter programmes, the Chengdu J-20 and the Shenyang J-31, are in the flight-testing phase, and China is apparently interested in fitting them with Russian next-generation enginesincluding the Saturn 117S, , which powers the Sukhoi Su-35. In addition, virtually all Chinese-built military and civilian aircraft designs are equipped with imported powerplants.
In terms of helicopter exports to Beijing, apart from contracts for transport helicopters, it is expected that China will continue limited procurement of Kamov’s special-mission aircraft, which are either impossible or unfeasible to clone locally in the foreseeable future.
One traditional aspect of bilateral arms trade is represented by joint research and development efforts, or by research and development programmes run by Russia in China’s interests.
These include some key Chinese weapons systems, such as the PL-12 air-to-air missile, the HQ-16 SAM system, the Hongdu L-15 combat trainer, the CAIC WZ-10 combat helicopter, the FC-1 tactical fighter, the Project 054À frigate.

China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, has conducted more than 100 tests and training tasks since early December, when it began a training mission in the South China Sea, the navy said on Sunday.
"The Liaoning successfully performed several tests of the combat system today and organized for the first time comprehensive combat training," the People's Liberation Army navy said in a statement. "Through this operation, we tested the carrier's combat capability and tried the performance of its propulsion and seaworthiness."
This is the first time the Liaoning has made a long-distance training voyage since it was commissioned into the PLA navy last year, the statement said, adding that the mission is characterized by a large number of tests, rigorous standards, complicated circumstances as well as collaboration with multiple military units.
The ship left its homeport of Qingdao, Shandong province, on Nov 26 and anchored at a naval base in Sanya, Hainan province, three days later. On Dec 5, it set out on the training mission.
Two missile destroyers, the Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, and two missile frigates, the Yantai and Weifang, participated in the mission. They escorted the carrier along the whole voyage from Qingdao to Sanya.
"The South China Sea has deep waters, strong wind and big waves, making it a suitable place for the aircraft carrier to conduct tests and training," said Senior Captain Zhang Zheng, captain of the Liaoning.
Crewmembers also have performed a series of tests on items such as the ship structure's resistance to stress, sailing speed in deep waters and stability of weapons and equipment, he added, noting that combat departments practiced exercises to defend incoming hostile aircraft, ships and submarines.
Several types of aircraft, combat ships and submarines were dispatched to cooperate with the carrier during the mission, which simulates real combat situations, according to Zhang.
After entering active service in September 2012, the Liaoning has carried out 12 sea trials and tests, including landings and takeoffs for the J-15 fighter jet.
The ship is still in the test and exercise stage, according to Senior Captain Mei Wen, Liaoning's political commissar.
"We have commanded the basic capability to operate and coordinate fighter jets and helicopters with the carrier," Mei said. "We have accumulated much experience in logistic support for the J-15 fighters and improved a lot in terms of damage control and handling of equipment malfunctions."

Zubr-class LCAC gives PLA quick access to disputed islands
After the Zubr-class air-cushioned landing craft was commissioned by the People's Liberation Army Navy, Shenzhen Television reports that China will be able to deploy its troops to the disputed Diaoyutai or Diaoyu Islands (administered by Japan as the Senkaku but also claimed by China and Taiwan) in the East China Sea and the Spratly islands in the South China Sea in a shorter period of time.
The report said China had already placed an order for four Zubr-class landing craft under a contract worth US$315 million. While two were constructed by the Ukraine-based Feodosiya Shipbuilding Company, the remaining two were licensed to be built in China. The first Zubr-class air-cushioned landing craft arrived in China in May 2013 according to the state-run China Radio International based in Beijing. China was also licensed to design and produce its own Zubr-class vessels as part of the deal.
With a cargo hold of 400 square meters and a fuel capacity of 56 tonnes, Shenzhen Television stated that the Zubr-class landing craft is capable of carrying three battle tanks or ten armored vehicles with 140 troops. Without any vehicles, it is able to carry 500 troops on board. Its top speed is about 63 knots or 111 kilometers per hour.
If China embarks on a territorial conflict with Japan over the East China Sea or with Vietnam or the Philippines over the South China Sea, the Zubr-class landing craft will play a decisive role due to its speed and size. As the Zubr-class landing craft is three times larger than the patrol vessels with which the Japanese coast guard and most countries in Southeast Asia are equipped, it is nearly unstoppable, even when detected.
Setting off from the closest naval facilities in eastern China, the Zubr-class could arrive at the Diaoyutai in just three hours. If the PLA were able to occupy the disputed islands before the Japanese government could react or deploy military forces to the battlefield, Shenzhen Television stated that China would win the war even before any battle had even taken place. The Zubr-class landing craft is more of a threat when it is equipped with anti-air missiles and naval guns, according to the report.
The Spratly islands are a group of disputed islands in the South China Sea. They are claimed in whole or in part by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan.

China's 1st aircraft carrier ends sea trials
BEIJING — China’s first aircraft carrier has successfully completed sea trials in the South China Sea, state media reported. The Liaoning returned to port Wednesday after a 37-day voyage, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Citing an unnamed naval source, Xinhua said the aircraft carrier tested its combat system and conducted a formation practice and “attained the anticipated objectives.” “All tests and training programs went well as scheduled,” it said. Aircraft, naval vessels and submarines also participated in the Liaoning’s tests. Early in the Liaoning’s trial run, one of the Chinese ships accompanying it was involved in a near collision with a U.S. Navy ship. A Chinese media report blamed the U.S. ship getting too close to the Liaoning, while U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called China’s behavior “irresponsible.” It marked the two countries’ most serious sea confrontation in years. The Liaoning was bought from Ukraine more than a decade ago and extensively refurbished before entering service in 2012. China claims virtually the entire South China Sea. A recent expansion of its naval reach has challenged the decades-old American dominance and alarmed its smaller neighbors, particularly the Philippines and Vietnam, which have competing territorial claims with Beijing to a string of islands.

"Ji’an", Ninth Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class), commissioned in Chinese Navy (PLAN)
The type-056 corvette (locally designated guided missile frigate) “Ji’an” was delivered to a troop unit under the East China Sea Fleet of the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLAN) on the morning of December 31, 2013 in Shanghai. Corvette “Ji’an” with the hull number of 586 was named after the Ji’an city of east China’s Jiangxi province.
The warship was built by inheriting the building mode, hull structure and technical performance of the warships of the same type, and through minor adjustment of the installation positions of some equipment for more convenient operation and maintenance. In addition, the partial optimization of its bulwarks and mast makes the warship more delicate and graceful. It is learned that the corvette “Bengbu”, China's first type-056 (first ship of the class), sailed to sea 10 months ago right from Shanghai.

China commissions new naval frigate
Beijing: China today commissioned a new generation light missile frigate to beef up its East China Sea fleet in the backdrop of growing tensions with Japan over the disputed islands.
The new escort vessel belongs to the Chinese-made light missile frigates and was named after Ji'an, a revolutionary base in south China's Jiangxi Province, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The ship, with hull number 586, will undertake patrol and escort missions and has anti-submarine capabilities.
Faced with increasing number of maritime disputes in South and East China Sea besides growing American push into the Asia-Pacific, China is strengthening its navy including commissioning its first aircraft carrier. China and Japan are locked in a long-drawn dispute over the sovereignty of islands - that Japan calls the Senkakus and China the Diaoyu Islands - in the East China Sea.
China's unilateral move to set up an Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the disputed islands added to the tension.
On November 23, 2013, China declared the ADIZ over the East China Sea, including an island chain disputed with Japan, and warned all aircraft entering the zone to provide a flight plan or face unspecified "defencive emergency measures".
Japan had refused to recognise the zone, as had some other countries including the US.

Meanwhile, Japan's defence minister has vowed to defend the country's territory after three Chinese government ships entered disputed waters off Tokyo-controlled islands in the East China Sea.
The Chinese coastguard vessels sailed at about 8:30 am local time on Sunday into territorial waters off one of the Senkaku islands, which China also claims and calls the Diaoyus, Japan's coastguard said. The ships left less than two hours later.
"We can never overlook repeated incursions into territorial waters," Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters.
