China's CJ-10 cruise missile is officially renamed DF-10
The Second Artillery Corps, China's strategic missile force, recently changed the name of its Changjiang-10 or CJ-10 land-based cruise missile to the Dongfeng-10 or DF-10, the Sina Military Network based in Beijing reported on Mar. 4.
With an attack range of between 1,500-2,500 km, the DF-10 is designed particularly to strike at US carrier battle groups in the Western Pacific. The official Chinese media claimed that a single warhead carried by a DF-10 missile can sink a 10,000-ton vessel. The missile captured the attention of military experts around the world after its first public appearance in the military parade held in 2009 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
A variant of the DF-10 called the KD-20 was also designed for the PLA Air Force to launch from the air. Designed to be launched from the H-6K strategic bomber, the attack range of the KD-20 is estimated at between 2,000 and 2,200 kilometers. The design of the DF-10 missile incorporates elements of Soviet Kh-55 cruise missiles. China may also have acquired American Tomahawk missiles from Pakistan and Afghanistan during the development of the DF-10.

Confirmed: China Is Building 2nd Aircraft Carrier
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is building its second aircraft carrier, several senior Chinese military officials have confirmed, a Hong Kong daily is reporting.
On Monday, Taiwan Focus News Channel cited the Chinese-language The Hong Kong Commercial Daily in reporting that China has begun work on its second aircraft carrier, which will have a more advanced launch system the one currently used on China’s only aircraft carrier, the Liaoning.
Channel, the initial report cited Liu Xiaojiang, the former political commissioner of the PLA Navy, as saying that the “government's industrial and manufacturing agencies are now in charge of the ship's construction.” The report also cited Ding Haichun, who was promoted to the position of deputy political commissioner of the PLA Navy back in January, as confirming that China’s second aircraft carrier is under construction.
Taiwan Focus News Channel went on to paraphrase Ding as saying that “after the completion of the ship's construction, it will be turned over to the Navy for training maneuvers.”
Want China Times, which is also based in Taiwan, also carried a story about the original report on Monday.
This is not the first time that Chinese officials have commented about the presumed second aircraft carrier. As I previously reported, back in January 2014 the Hong Kong-based Ta Kung Pao newspaper quoted Wang Min, Party chief of Northeast China’s Liaoning province, as saying that construction on China’s second carrier had begun in the port city of Dalian in Liaoning province. Wang said that the carrier would be completed in six years’ time, and that China ultimately intended to build four aircraft carriers.
That report was quickly taken down.

Two J-20 prototypes seen on test flights in Chengdu
Two prototypes of China's J-20 stealth fighter were photographed carrying out test flights in Chengdu recently, reports the Shanghai-based Guancha Syndicate.
The prototypes, 2013, 2015, are said to be installed with new avionics developed by Aviation Industry Corporation of China's Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. Its chief designer Pu Xiaobo said the system he created has an open framework that builds on an unified optical interconnect module. The system has comprehensive features covering navigation, detection, identification, attack, management and pilots' health management. It also integrates flight management systems, electronics and aviation electronics, which will ensure the fighter jet can carry out a mission safely and the systems are able to share their resources with each other.
Pu and his team built the country's most advanced concept laboratory and a simulation environment to test the design.
The stealth fighter was first officially introduced to the public though a PLA recruitment video called Heroes' Sky released on Feb. 26. Rear Admiral Yin Zhuo of the PLA Navy said the film suggested the J-20 will enter service soon. The video also described the quality of the plane's stealth capabilities, flight control system, avionic electronic system, active phased array radar, supermaneuverability, over-the-horizon radar and attack have been improved as well, he added.

PLA expands its Type 093 midget submarine line
Beijing has revealed a version of the Type 093 midget submarine, known as the 093T, suggesting that more vessels in this class may be produced, reports news website Cankao Xiaoxi.
The 093B midget submarine reportedly has a vertical launch system that can launch 16 missiles, including the supersonic anti-ship YJ-18 and the DH-10 cruise missile.
Such a submarine can carry up to nine special ops members and is ideal for covert transportation and surprise attack. It can also launch laser-guided missiles or sneak combat divers into military ports to perform recon or destroy high-value targets such as aircraft carriers or nuclear submarines.
The United States was developing a midget version of its Ohio-class submarines but reportedly stopped development after a fire in 2008. The submarines used a dry-deck shelter system which allows the midget submarine to dock completely inside of its larger cousin. The 093T submarine adapts a wet-deck shelter system, which means only two thirds of the submarine are secured to the mother submarine and the rest is exposed to water.

Images suggest upgrades to China's early series J-11s
Images have emerged on Chinese military web forums suggesting sensor upgrades to Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) J-11A combat aircraft, with reports noting that two regiments have received these modifications so far.
Upgraded J-11As appear to have four new missile approach warning systems (MAWS), two just aft the cockpit facing forward and two pointing aft on the vertical stabilisers. Similar systems have previously been fitted to the H-6M and H-6K strategic bombers.
Chinese reports also indicate that cockpit displays have been upgraded and that an upgraded fire control system allows the fighter to use Russian Vympel R-77 or Chinese Luoyang PL-10 medium-range air-to-air missiles. Available imagery cannot confirm these upgrades.
There is little to indicate that the J-11A's radar has also been upgraded. However, China's development of new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for the Chengdu J-10B and J-20 fighters indicates that radar upgrades are possible for older SAC J-11s.
A potential radar upgrade may also see the inclusion of new helmet mounted display (HMD) systems, mirroring a modification path undertaken by several Western fourth-generation fighters.
SAC's J-11A fighters stem from its initial 1998 contract with Russia's Sukhoi Aircraft Corporation to co-produce 200 Su-27SK fighters from kits made at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association (KnAAPO).
Initial co-produced units proved inadequate to the point of requiring Russian-assisted rebuilding, and Sukhoi officials later told IHS Jane's that SAC's production finish for J-11As exceeded that of Sukhoi's Su-27s.
However, in a move that damaged Sino-Russian military technology relations, SAC built only 104 kit-based J-11As before hijacking the design to make nearly entirely Chinese-produced J-11B and twin-seat J-11BS fighters, J-15 and J-15BS naval fighters, and twin-seat J-16 strike fighters.
In April 2014 an Asian government source told IHS Jane's that China had 230 J-11A/B fighters in 2014 and this was expected to increase to 390 by 2020, along with another 100 J-16 strike fighters.

Chinese villager injured in Myanmar warplane bombing remains critical
One of eight Chinese villagers injured in a Myanmar warplane bombing last week remains in critical condition despite medical treatment, said Chinese authorities on Friday.
Two with serious injuries are improving and their lives are no longer in danger, and five others with minor injuries have been discharged from the hospital after treatment, said the government of Lincang City in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
The joint investigation into the incident between the two countries has not been completed, said the Lincang government, denying Myanmar had proposed compensation of 70,000 yuan ($11,383) for each Chinese citizen who was killed.
On March 13, a bomb dropped by a Myanmar warplane hit a sugarcane field in Lincang, which borders the conflict-hit Southeast Asian nation, killing five villagers and injuring eight others.
After the incident, China lodged serious complaints to Myanmar and Myanmar expressed sorrow for the Chinese casualties.
China's troops are conducting armed patrols in the border area to ensure the security of local residents.

China becomes first foreign buyer of Russian S-400 air defense system
Citation :
China has purchased S-400 missile defense systems from Russia, director general of Russia's major arms exporting company Rosoborobexport Anatoly Isaykin has told the Kommersant daily in an interview. Isaykin refused to disclose terms of contract but confirmed that China had become the first buyer of the cutting-edge air defense system. He noted that it emphasizes the strategic nature of Russian-Chinese relations. The head of Rosoboronexport said that the Russian defense industry is obliged to supply the S-400 air defense system to the Russian Defense Ministry first of all, despite the fact that many foreign countries are interested in purchasing the system. The systems, which are capable of launching up to 72 missiles and engaging up to 36 targets simultaneously, entered service in 2007 to replace the S-300 systems. S-400 Triumf is designed to shield from air strikes, strategic, cruise, tactical and operating tactical ballistic missiles and medium-range ballistic missiles.

China fields new maritime patrol and anti-submarine Y-8/Y-9 variant
Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
28 June 2015
Seen when it first emerged in late 2011, the Y-8GX6 (Y-8Q) maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft is now understood to have entered service with the PLAN's North Sea Fleet. Source: FYJS web page
The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has introduced into service a new maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) variant of the Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation (SAC) Y-8/Y-9 medium transport aircraft, national media reported in late June.
An unspecified number of the four-engined Y-8GX6 (Y-8Q) turboprops have now been inducted into the North Sea Fleet, which is responsible for the maritime domain that stretches from the North Korean border to Lianyungang (Jiangsu Province), some three-and-a-half years after the type was first revealed in late 2011.
No further details about the entry-into-service were revealed in the report, which appeared on a Chinese defence blogging site, except that the Y-8GX6 (Y-8Q) may be rolled out to the PLAN's East and South Sea Fleets at a later date.
First revealed in November 2011 via a series of images, the Y-8GX6 (Y-8Q) is the latest version of the Y-8/Y-9 platform that dates back to the mid-1970s. Details are sketchy, but IHS Jane's has previously reported that the Y-8GX6 (Y-8Q) features a redesigned wing and pressurised fuselage with composite structures (completed with the assistance of the Antonov Corporation), WJ-6C turboshaft engines, and six-bladed propellers.
As noted when the images of the aircraft first emerged, it is chiefly distinguishable from previous variants of the Y-8/Y-9 by its large chin-mounted sea-search radar, an electro-optical system aft of the nose wheel, and a weapons bay just in front of the main wheels. It also has a pronounced magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) boom and domed windows in the aft fuselage for observation.
Performance specifications have not been released, but an empty baseline Y-8 transport aircraft with maximum fuel has an estimated range of about 6,680 km (although a Y-8GX6 [Y-8Q] loaded down with mission kit without auxiliary fuel tanks will be less than this). For its ASW and maritime patrol missions, it will likely carry a range of already-fielded air-launched torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and sonobuoys.
Other special mission versions of the Y-8/Y-9 platforms include the Y-8CB communications intelligence (COMINT) aircraft; the Y-8JB electronic intelligence (ELINT) aircraft; the Y-8G signals intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft; the Y-8H intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft; the Y-8J airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft; the Y-8X patrol aircraft; the Y-8W AEW&C aircraft; the Y-8T command and control (C2) aircraft; the Y-8XZ electronic warfare (EW) aircraft; the T0518 AEW&C aircraft; the ZDK-03 AEW&C aircraft; and the KZ-800 ELINT aircraft.
China strengthens its defense close to Kashmir with deployment of HQ-9 air defense missile systems.
China strengthens its defense close to Kashmir border, according the Chinese news website WantChinaTimes, China has deployed HQ-9 air defense missiles to Hetian airfield in the south of the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region in the country's northwest. Hetian is only 260 kilometers from India-administered Kashmir.
Hetian airfield is the staging base of the PLA Air Force's 37th Air Division, from where the unit's JH-7A fighter bombers can carry out airstrikes against targets in India. As such, it is likely to be a target for the Indian Air Force in the event of a war.
The HQ-9 is a medium-to-long range air defense missile system designed and manufactured in China by the Defense Company CPMIEC (China Precision Machinery Import & Export Corporation). The HQ-9 system is designed to track and destroy aircraft, cruise missiles, air-to-surface missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles.
The missile is armed with a 180 kg warhead, has a maximum speed of Mach 4.2. and has a maximum range of 200 km up to an altitude of 30 km. The missile has a proximity fuse with an effective range of 35m, which goes active when the missile is 5km away from its target.
The HQ-9 launcher erector truck (TEL) has four missile containers. In firing position, the missiles containers are placed at the vertical to the rear side of the truck, two stabilizers are deployed at the rear and center of the chassis.

State Media: China Needs Long-range Bomber By Agence France-Presse 4:41 p.m. EDT July 7, 2015
BEIJING — China needs to develop a long-range strategic bomber to strike adversaries farther away from its coast in the event of conflict, state media reported Tuesday, quoting defense experts.
Beijing has been steadily beefing up its military through years of double-digit increases in defense spending, rapidly expanding its naval power, commissioning its first aircraft carrier and adding to its submarine and surface fleets.
But the government-run China Daily newspaper said in a full-page article that a recent military meeting had deemed the country's air force a "strategic force," citing the latest issues of Kanwa Defense Review, a Canada-based defense and weapons technology publication.
The title had previously been reserved for the military's Second Artillery Corps, which the paper described as China's "de facto strategic missile force."
The meeting agreed that a long-range strategic bomber would enable the air force to attack farther out into the Pacific Ocean, the paper quoted Kanwa Defense Review as reporting, as far as the "second island chain." Chinese strategists conceive of the "first island chain" as the arc stretching from Japan to Taiwan, which includes numerous US military bases on the Japanese island of Okinawa.
The second chain refers to islands farther east in the Pacific, including the Marianas, the Carolines, and the US territory of Guam with its Andersen Air Force Base. A third "island chain" encompassing Hawaii is also sometimes mentioned.
China's increased military posture has come as Beijing asserts its territorial claims in the East and South China Seas, where it has disputes with several Asian neighbours including Japan and the Philippines. Its moves have raised tensions with the United States, still the region's top military power.
A capacity to strike the second island chain would hinder foreign militaries from intervening in "an emergency or conflict," the China Daily said, citing the report.
In May, China's State Council, or cabinet, said in a white paper that the country would project its military power further beyond its sea borders and more assertively in the air.
The Chinese military defines a long-range strategic bomber as one that can carry more than 10 tonnes of air-to-ground munitions and with a minimum range of 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) without refuelling, the China Daily said.
Chinese defense technology magazine Aerospace Knowledge said in a series of articles last month that China needs a long-range stealth bomber, China Daily said.
"A medium-range bomber can't essentially fix the PLA [People's Liberation Army] air force's shortcomings in terms of strategic strike and strategic deterrence," it cited one of the reports as saying. "Thus the air force does need an intercontinental strategic bomber capable of penetrating an enemy's air defenses."
But the China Daily quoted the publication's deputy editor-in-chief Wang Yanan as saying such an aircraft would require "a state-of-the-art structure and aerodynamic configuration as well as a high-performance turbofan engine".
"All of these are major problems facing the Chinese aviation industry," he added. "I don't think these difficulties can be resolved within a short period of time."
