China, Taiwan likely to increase South China Sea deployments after dismissing international court ruling
Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Navy International 13 July 2016
Key Points Beijing and Taipei are likely to maintain or increase deployments in the South China Sea in wake of ruling by international court of arbitration Possible increase in military activities is likely to complicate and heighten tensions further in the disputed region Operations conducted by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in disputed areas of the South China Sea are notn't likely to be affected by the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling, as Beijing has dismissed the tribunal as "a political farce that is illegal" and vows to carry on with its activities in the region.
The tribunal was initiated by the Philippines in June 2013 to determine the legal basis of maritime rights asserted by Beijing in the South China Sea, the status of a number of geographic features in the maritime region, and the lawfulness of activities undertaken by Beijing in the area.

China’s largest robot helicopter has begun to test fire anti-tank missiles Jul 13, 2016
The V750, one of China’s largest helicopter UAVs, has begun to test fire anti-tank missiles for ground attack missions, that reported by popsci.com.
In June 2016, an unmanned V-750 helicopter UAV successfully fired anti-tank missiles at targets. Jointly developed by Weifang Tianxiang Aerospace Industry Co.Ltd., Qingdao Haili Helicopters Manufacturing Co. Ltd and certified by Chinese aviation authorities in 2014, the 750kg V-750 drone is used by both civilian and military users.
In its current configuration, the armed version of the V-750 can carry at least two 50kg anti-tank missiles, such as the HJ-9 and HJ-10, or rocket pods, and has a range of 500 kilometers.
The attributes of helicopter style drones is not just in where they can operate, but for whom. Along with the smaller NORINCO Sky Saker H-300, the arming of the V-750 is a sign that China’s armed robots are becoming more accessible to the average grunt. While a medium altitude long endurance UCAV like the US Reaper or Chinese Pterodactyl would normally be controlled by a corps or divisional headquarters, a medium sized helicopter UCAV could be operated at the battalion level.

Stride 2016 and Zhurihe confrontation exercises kicked in north China’s Jul 18, 2016
Stride 2016 and Zhurihe confrontation exercises kicked off Friday at Zhurihe in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, to boost the “trans-regional” maneuvering of the five theater commands of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Seen as one of the key maneuvers after the establishment of the PLA’s new command structure, the event will see mixed army brigades sent from each theater command separately confront a PLA troop posing as the enemy.
Where as the selection of brigades taking part in the drill would have been based on recommendations in the past, they were randomly selected this time, giving more troops chance to participate, according to chief director Wang Zhian.
Wang said commanders’ efficiency will be a greater part of evaluation of this drill, and the opposing sides will switch roles of attack and defense instead of each playing a single role throughout.
The drill will be tougher than previous versions, involving more nighttime maneuvers and harsher requirements for live-fire assaults.
The schedule was pushed to July from the usual May to give troops more time for preparatory training.

China used its latest bomber, the H-6K to patrol over South China Sea Jul 18, 2016
China used its latest bomber, the H-6K, in recent patrol over Huangyan Island in South China Sea, that reported by Air Force spokesman.
Beijing sends nuclear capable H-6K bomber over Scarborough Shoal in new South China Sea escalation. The People’s Liberation air force (PLAAF) at the weekend released photographs of one of its newest H-6K long-range nuclear-capable bombers overflying Scarborough Shoal on China’s Weibo social media service. The aircraft, based on a 1950s Russian design, is capable of delivering nuclear weapons throughout Asia.
The Xian H-6K is an updated version of the H-6 medium-range bomber. It made its first flight in 2007 and entered service in 2009. Other sources report that bomber entered service in 2013. China operates at least 15 of these new bombers. Some sources report that China plans to replace the previous H-6D bombers with the new H-6Ks on a near one-to-one basis.
The H-6K is designed for long-range attacks and stand-off attacks. It is considered as a strategic bomber. It is capable of attacking US carrier battle groups and priority targets in Asia. This aircraft has nuclear strike capability.

NORINCO develops CT3 command and reconnaissance vehicle
Christopher F Foss, London - IHS Jane's International Defence Review 20 July 2016
China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has developed a dedicated infantry field command and reconnaissance vehicle designated the CT3, which it is now offering on the export market.
The CT3 is based on the company's 8x8 VN1 armoured personnel carrier (APC), which is currently deployed by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in a wide range of battlefield roles.
The key operational functions of the CT3 can be summarised as tactical command, battlefield reconnaissance, target indication, and information processing.
The overall layout of the CT3 is similar to other members of the VN1 family of vehicles with the driver seated front left, commander to the immediate rear, and the diesel powerpack to the right.
The area to the rear of the commander's position has been raised to provide greater internal volume for its specialised battlefield mission.
Mounted on the roof is a telescopic mast fitted with a complete suite of sensors, including a thermal imager that has a detection range of 8 km and an identification range of 3.5 km.
A high-definition colour video camera provides a detection range of 12 km and an identification range of 7 km.
The mast is also fitted with a laser rangefinder with a maximum range of 10 km, which the company claims can be employed as a target designator for precision-guided munitions.
A Ku-band tactical radar completes the sensor suite, offering a quoted maximum target detection range of 12 km and a minimum detection range of 200 m.
When not required the sensor suite is lowered, although at present it appears to remain outside the hull and is therefore unprotected.
Communications equipment and operator workstations are located within the rear compartment of the vehicle and are used to facilitate rapid target acquisition and cueing for artillery and other assets, such as fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

New Chinese Type-96B main battle tanks arrived in Russia Jul 22, 2016
The Type-96B variant of Chinese main battle tanks arrived in the Moscow Region to participate in the International Army Games 2016.
Echelon with military hardware of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has arrived at the Taman motorized rifle brigade in order to participate in the “Tank biathlon” and “Suvorov attack” contests held within the International Army Games 2016.
T-72 tank is the main tank of the “Tank biathlon” contest. Team of China will operate its own tanks.
The Chinese team is the first one to arrive. The rest participants of these contests will arrive until the end of the week.
Team of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has delivered 5 tanks and 4 IFVs as well as munitions and materials for participation in the “Tank biathlon” and “Suvorov attack” contests.
The new Type-96B variant was revealed on Chinese online forums on 5 July by a blogger posting a video of the tank on its way to high altitude testing. Two days later images emerged of the new tank beginning its trip to Russia.
Except for an improved ventilation system, the Type-96B appears to show no visible changes to the turret, optical sensors or main 125 mm gun armament.
Unconfirmed Chinese reports indicate that computer and digital communication systems have been improved, allowing tank commanders to benefit from common integrated intelligence of the battlefield processed at higher levels of command.
The reports also point to improvements reportedly made to the Type-96Bs engine, exhaust system, suspension, and running wheels.
The engine and new rear-mounted exhaust system appear to have benefited from those developed for Norinco’s VT-4 export MBT. If this is the case, the Type-96B may have a 1,200 hp liquid-cooled diesel engine.

Chinese airborne troops execute live-fire training Jul 23, 2016
A ZBD-03 airborne armored infantry fighting vehicle fires at a simulated target at an undisclosed area on the plateau of northwest China during a live-fire training exercise.
An airborne regiment with the PLA Air Force organized its ZBD-03 airborne armored infantry fighting vehicles to conduct a live-fire training exercise at an undisclosed area on the plateau of northwest China on July 18, 2016, to hone troops’ combat capabilities at high altitudes.
The ZBD-03 is the latest generation of airborne infantry armoured fighting vehicle used by the Chinese Armed Forces (PLA).
The first generation of the ZBD-03 was called ZLC2000, this vehicle was designed, developed and manufactured by the Chinese Defense Company Norinco. The ZLC2000 tracked vehicle was introduced by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) in 2003.
It has been designed for being air dropped by medium-sized transport aircraft such as Il-76M. NORINCO provided the ZLC2000 in three variants: command and control; infantry fighting vehicle; and anti-tank guided missile carrier. The ZBD-03 was presented for the first time to the public, during the military parade in Beijing, the 01 October 2010, for the 60th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China 1949 – 2009.
The ZBD-03 armour protection is limited by its weight restrictions for air dropping. With a combat weight of 8 tonnes, the vehicle’s armour is supposed to be thin and can only resist small calibre weapons.

China’s Newest 1,305 mph Next-Gen Stealth J-20 Fighter Jet Soars the Skies (Source: Sputnik News; posted July 24, 2016)
The advance of the J-20 fighter program is cause for concern for Japan which faces a several year capability gap until the F-35 Lightning II becomes combat ready – if it ever does.
China’s Chengdu Aircraft Company (CAC) has built a new Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) J-20 stealth fighter jets with video footage on Chinese websites showing the latest rendition in full fury this week. This is the second known J-20 LRIP fighter jet after the first with the serial number 2101 displayed in late December 2015. There are believed to be a total of four such next generation jets in the possession of the Chinese Air Force.
The fighter jet is painted in shades of gray along with a toned down national insignia, but unlike previous J-20s, it has no identifiable serial numbers. China’s official Xinhua and CCTV news outlets have yet to confirm the existence of the new J-20 despite video evidence to confirm its existence.
Security analysts believe that the appearance of the LRIP fighter jet suggests that it is nearing introduction into service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force well ahead of official US Department of Defense projections that the J-20 would become operational in 2018.
The J-20 soars at a top speed of 1,305 mph (2,100 kmh) and features a stealth design comparable to Lockheed-Martin’s F-35 Lightning II although with far fewer reported technical setbacks and safety concerns. The J-20’s weapons are carried internally, with a central bay believed to contain four beyond visual range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAMs) as well as two short-range air-to-air missiles (AAMs).
Only one challenge remains before the J-20 is inducted into the Chinese Air Force – what power source will be used for mass production of the fighter jet? Currently, the J-20 is powered by two Russian Saturn AL-31 engines, but Beijing hopes to eventually install 180-kN (40,000-pound-trhust) rated WS-15 turbofans, but the indigenous jet engine development program has run into a series of manufacturing problems that has delayed their full scale production.
The emergence of the J-20 over the skies of the South and East China Seas would provide Beijing with unparalleled regional air superiority as they continue to battle over the contested Paracel and Spratly Islands amidst US intervention and for the Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands against Japan.
The advance of the J-20 fighter jet comes at a worrying time for Tokyo which faces a several year capability gap as they wait to see whether a functional F-35 fighter jet will ever fully materialize after the US prohibited their ally from acquiring the ultra-elite F-22 Raptor.

World's Largest Amphibious Aircraft Made In China (Source: Xinhua; published July 23, 2016)
The first AG600 amphibious aircraft rolls off a production line in Zhuhai, in south China's Guangdong Province. The aircraft will be used to fight forest fires and perform marine rescue missions. (Xinhua photo)
GUANGZHOU, Xinhua --- China has completed production of a massive amphibious aircraft that it plans to use to fight forest fires and perform marine rescue missions. The AG600 rolled off a production line in the southern city of Zhuhai on Saturday, in what aviation observers see as a milestone for the country.
The aircraft has a maximum take-off weight of 53.5 tonnes, a maximum cruising speed of 500 km per hour, a maximum flight range of 4,500 km, and a maximum endurance of 12 hours, according to state aircraft maker the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).
The 37-meter-long AG600 with a wingspan of 38.8 meters is by far the world's largest amphibian aircraft, about the size of a Boeing 737, according to AVIC deputy general manager Geng Ruguang.
In addition to taking off and landing like an ordinary plane, the AG600 can also take off and land from stretches of water that are at least 1,500 meters long, 200 meters wide and 2.5 meters deep.
It is destined to become an important part of China's resources for dealing with emergencies. According to the original design, it can collect 12 tonnes of water in 20 seconds, and transport up to 370 tonnes of water on a single tank of fuel.
With excellent maneuverability and a relatively wide range of search scope, the AG600 is capable of rescuing up to 50 people far offshore.
Besides, it is very useful in developing and exploiting marine resources, being adaptable to conduct marine environmental monitoring, resource detection and transportation.
It is the result of nearly seven years of work by a group of 70 aircraft component manufacturers and research teams with over 150 institutes from 20 provinces and municipalities in China. The development and production of the plane received government approval in 2009.
"The AG600 is like a ship that can fly, with advanced gas-water dynamic engineering and underwater corrosion resistance technology," said Huang Lingcai, chief designer of the plane.
According to the AVIC, the AG600 will mainly target the domestic market. Seventeen intent orders have been placed so far.
The unveiling of the AG600 came shortly after Chinese heavy transport aircraft the Y-20 officially entered military service on July 7 and China's first large passenger aircraft, the C919, rolled off the final assembly line in November 2015.
Geng described the AG600 as "the latest breakthrough in China's aviation industry, which demonstrates an overall improvement of China's national strength and research capacity."

Chinese Media Focuses On Anti-Missile Tests In Wake of THAAD Deployment Plan (People's Daily Online; published July 25, 2016) In response to the scheduled THAAD deployment in South Korea, Chinese state media has recently been reporting on China’s anti-missile tests and the nation’s missile defense system.
On July 24, China Central Television (CCTV) revealed for the first time video footage of China's missile defense system tests in 2010 and 2013. In 2010, China tested an HQ-19 anti-ballistic missile interception system; in 2013, the tests focused on land-based, mid-course missile interception, according to news site guancha.cn.
On July 25, People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Daily ran a front page story about Chen Deming, an expert on China's missile defense system. According to the story, Chen has helped lead some 28 research teams at a military base in northwestern China, supporting 20 major scientific achievements and winning 13 patents. The story also revealed that there was an additional missile test in 2011.
“The public revelation about China’s mid-course missile defense system does not reveal optimism about the country's perimeter situation. However, we have made real progress in our missile defense system, which is now more advanced than what has been shown on TV,” wrote Song Zhongping, a Beijing-based military expert, on his Weibo.
The U.S. and South Korea announced on July 13 that the two sides agreed to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Air Defense system, or THAAD, in Seongju County, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, by the end of 2017.
THAAD faced strong opposition from China. According to Lu Kang, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, its deployment “will seriously damage strategic balance in the region and harm the security interests of neighboring countries, including China. It goes against the efforts of maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula.” Lu made this statement earlier in July, also noting that, “China will resolutely take whatever measures are necessary to safeguard its own interests.”
Although THAAD's 200-kilometer missile interception range will not cover Seoul, its X-band radar can reach Chinese and Russian territories far beyond North Korea, Xinhua News Agency reported.
