Last week D Squadron consisting of Recce and Command Troops took to Salisbury Plain for CT1 (troop level) training.

Recce Tp practised obstacle crossings, route reconnaissance, advancing to contact and fighting the delay battle, as well as giving some new crewmen the opportunity to put their skills into action.

Command Tp practised establishing Battlegroup Headquarters from which the HQ staff operate, ensuring it is kept up and running and well defended. Managing to avoid the worst of the rain, we took advantage of the beautiful weather while the sun shone. Finishing the exercise Recce launched an ill-fated but valiant dawn attack on BGHQ.

The Squadron is looking forward to deploying to Castlemartin Ranges next month before some well-earned Easter leave in April.

Defence Secretary confirms £1.7bn investment in Scottish military bases

From:Ministry of Defence, Scotland Office, and The Rt Hon Sir Michael Fallon

published: 24 February 2017

The Defence Secretary today (Friday 24 February 2017) confirmed £1.7 billion will be invested to upgrade Scottish military bases as the MOD’s Defence Board convened in Edinburgh for the first time.

Sir Michael Fallon outlined how Scotland will be home to several additional key Defence capabilities by 2020 to the Board and recognised its unique contribution to UK national security.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said:

“Scotland is on the frontline of defending the United Kingdom from growing threats at sea, in the air, and on land. Our commitment to the future of defence in Scotland is underlined by increasing investment in better infrastructure for the Armed Forces helping to keep us safe.”

Scotland’s 14,000 military regular and reserve personnel and 3,930 MOD civilians are set to benefit from:

· £1.3 billion investment into upgrades to HM Naval Base Clyde’s waterfront, engineering support, accommodation and physical security ahead of the Dreadnought class of deterrent submarines arriving in Scotland from the early 2030s;

· £400 million investment at Lossiemouth as one of the RAF’s three fast jet bases - upgrading its runways, taxiways and accommodation for the nine new Poseidon P-8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and an additional Typhoon squadron;

· Being home to a versatile Army Adaptive Force Brigade, which specialises in operations, works alongside partner nations abroad, and provides resilience support to Scottish civil authorities and communities. Further, Leuchars Station will be expanded to become the main ‘hub’ for Army activity in Scotland.

The £178 billion Defence equipment programme supports 11,000 Scottish industry jobs and accounts for over 10% of the country’s industrial base.

Scottish business is developing key military capabilities: the Queen Elizabeth Carriers being built in Rosyth; Offshore Patrol Vessels and Type 26 Global Combat Ships being built in Govan and Scotstoun; a new Active Electronically Scanned Array Radar for RAF Typhoons being built in Edinburgh.

Clyde-based Royal Marines sharpen their core commando skills

24/02/2017

Silhouetted against a particularly fiery winter sunset in south-west Scotland, Royal Marines march down a gravel track towards their bivouac for the night.

Routine business for the green berets? Absolutely! Except 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group, who are more at home on ships and submarines than in the wilds.

The 550-strong Faslane-based unit performs the most important duty of any military personnel in the land – except submariners operating Britain’s nuclear deterrent: namely protecting that deterrent on the Clyde, berthed in base or at the nearby armaments depot at Coulport.

In addition, the marines are the nation’s experts in board and search operations on the high seas – taking down drug smugglers in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean.

Some 43 men stay with the unit for the bulk of their careers. Others move around the Corps.

To remind all of core Royal Marines skills in the field, every year for two weeks the FPG troops revert to their traditional role: elite seaborne light infantry, sharpening their commando skills.

"Revenant Shadow is an important part of the O Squadron yearly training programme and aims to revise and strengthen core skills that are used by Royal Marines in all types of deployment – including the troops deployed on nuclear security duties in Faslane and Coulport

Captain Josh Roughton RM, Second in Command of O Squadron, 43 Commando FPG

This year, 43’s leaders laid on Exercise Revenant Shadow for O Squadron, the men who safeguard the deterrent, splitting the fortnight-long workout between the terrain around Faslane and the military exercise areas 90 miles away at Kirkcudbright, throwing in an amphibious landing and live firing phase for added frisson.

“Revenant Shadow is an important part of the O Squadron yearly training programme and aims to revise and strengthen core skills that are used by Royal Marines in all types of deployment – including the troops deployed on nuclear security duties in Faslane and Coulport,” explained Captain Josh Roughton RM, Second in Command of O Squadron, and exercise organiser.

“It also ensures that the Royal Marines from O Squadron remain proficient in the skills they will require as they move to other units in 3 Commando Brigade in the future.”

British L85 Rifle otherwise known as the SA80 has been given a rough time in its time and its time to start standing up for this great service rifle for what it REALLY is. The truth about this rifle is shrouded by a past that it never seems to shake off and I want to try explain why I think this firearm performs great.

The SA80 (Small Arms for the 1980s) is a British family of 5.56×45mm NATO small arms. It is a selective fire, gas-operated assault rifle. Mechanically, it has been derived from the Armalite AR-18, which had been manufactured under licence in the UK by Sterling Armaments Company. The first prototypes were tried in 1976, and production ended in 1994. It is due to remain in service until 2025.

The L85 rifle variant of the SA80 family has been the standard issue service rifle of the British Armed Forces since 1987, replacing the L1A1 variant of the FN FAL. The A1 variant was upgraded in the early 2000s by Heckler & Koch as the SA80A2 and remains in service as of 2016. In mid-2016 a prototype A3 variant was showcased which further improved on the weapon and is reportedly being considered to extend the out of service date beyond 2025. The remainder of the family comprises the L86 Light Support Weapon, the short-barrelled L22 carbine and the L98 Cadet rifle.

The SA80 was the last in a long line of British weapons (including the Lee–Enfield family) to come from the Royal Small Arms Factory, the national arms development and production facility at Enfield Lock.

Royal Navy Fires Sea Skua Anti-Ship Missile for the Last Time

The most successful weapon in the Royal Navy since World War 2 has been fired for the last time. The Sea Skua missile all but wiped out Saddam Hussein's Navy single-handedly in the first Gulf War in 1991, wrecking 14 enemy ships. But with the Lynx helicopter which carries it, just weeks away from being retired, the missiles were launched for the final time in the middle of the Atlantic as HMS Portland let rip - only the third time this century live Sea Skuas have been fired.

HM Armed Forces

Today, Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, unveiled the Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial in Victoria Embankment Gardens, Westminster, London.

The new Memorial recognises the contributions of the UK Armed Forces and all UK citizens who deployed in the Gulf region, Iraq and Afghanistan from 1990-2015, as well as those who supported them back home. At 1100 am, a Service of Dedication was conducted from a specially constructed Drumhead on Horse Guards Parade with The Queen, Prime Minister Theresa May and the Defence Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon, in attendance. They were joined by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Henry of Wales and other Members of the Royal Family.

Readings were given by Prince Henry and a Ministry of Defence Civil Servant Victoria Whittaker, who deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 and whose father served in the Gulf in 1991. Following the Drumhead Service, the Memorial was formerly unveiled at a short ceremony in Victoria Embankment Gardens, in front of the Ministry of Defence, where Her Majesty The Queen met a small number of civilian and military guests who contributed to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and Memorial trustees.

Prior to leaving, Her Majesty was presented with a posy by two-year-old Alfie Lunn whose father Sergeant Mark Lunn, 29, deployed to Iraq in 2007 and was awarded a Military Cross for his actions during a firefight in Basra. Alfie’s mother, Corporal Michele Lunn, deployed to Afghanistan in 2014/15.

UK to replenish Hellfire stock

The UK is to replenish its stock of Lockheed Martin AGM-114 Hellfire II air-to-surface missiles at a cost of USD150 million.

According to the US Defense Security and Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which announced the State Department approval for the sale on 16 March, the UK has requested 1,000 AGM-114R1/R2 Hellfire II semi-active laser (SAL) missiles with logistics support services and other related programme support.

"This proposed sale directly contributes to the foreign policy and national security policies of the United States by enhancing the close air support capability of the UK in support of NATO and other coalition operations," the DSCA said. "Commonality between close air support capabilities greatly increases interoperability between our two countries' military and peacekeeping forces, and allows for greater burden sharing."

In UK service, the Hellfire (Heliborne, Laser, Fire and Forget) is carried by the AgustaWestland-Boeing WAH-64 Apache AH1 attack helicopter flown by the British Army Air Corps and the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle flown by the Royal Air Force.
