ST Engineering’s Aerospace Arm Secures C130 Contract From Royal Air Force of Oman
Singapore, 15 January 2013 – Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd’s (ST Engineering) aerospace arm Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd (ST Aerospace) today announced that it has secured a contract to provide the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) with a full scale maintenance and modernisation solution for three of its C130 Hercules aircraft. ST Aerospace will undertake both modernisation and maintenance work at its facility in Paya Lebar, Singapore.
The contract includes major servicing of the aircraft, repair and overhaul (R&O) of aircraft components as well as the Rolls-Royce / Allison T56 / 501 engines and its accessories. A significant part of the contract also involves the modernisation of the aircraft cockpit, which is complex in nature and involves extensive aircraft wire tear down and re-wire. The first aircraft is expected to be inducted in the third quarter of 2013, targeting for redelivery in the first quarter of 2014.
Under the modernisation programme, ST Aerospace will equip RAFO’s fleet of C130 aircraft with an avionics suite that is Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) compliant. The avionics suite will include a six-display full glass cockpit, digital flight control system, and flight management system. With this, the aircraft would be able to navigate safely, efficiently and accurately through CNS/ATM-regulated airspace worldwide, significantly improving its operational readiness, despatch reliability and operational efficiency. RAFO will benefit through improved operational efficiency and lower maintenance requirements, while enhancing its overall aircraft availability.
An integrated service provider, ST Aerospace leverages its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) expertise, as well as its strong in-house engineering capability, and value adds through performing depot level maintenance and cockpit modernisation simultaneously. With a short turnaround time of five months, RAFO will enjoy increased savings with minimised downtime of its fleet.
"The Royal Air Force of Oman has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with ST Aerospace for over 20 years. We are satisfied with its performance level and work quality. We selected ST Aerospace because it is a one stop centre for the C130 Hercules aircraft and has extensive capabilities on this aircraft platform. Its ability to undertake depot level maintenance and cockpit modernisation simultaneously is especially advantageous to us, as it minimises downtime and improves aircraft availability of our fleet.” ~Air Vice Marshal Matar Ali AL-OBAIDANI, Commander, Royal Air Force of Oman
“We are indeed honoured to be awarded this contract and are grateful for RAFO’s continued trust in our company, to provide its fleet with quality and dependable solutions. We are proud of our long term relationship with the RAFO for over 20 years and are looking forward to this opportunity to further strengthen our successful partnership. ST Aerospace shall leverage our vast experience and expertise on the C130 Hercules aircraft platform to ensure that we deliver to the RAFO a highly reliable and effective system.” ~ CHANG Cheow Teck, President, ST Aerospace
ST Aerospace’s relationship with RAFO began in 1988, when the air force selected it to perform component repairs for the C130 Hercules fleet. Through the years, the partnership progressed to include airframe, component and engine MRO. With this contract, the partnership is further extended to include modernisation of their C130 Hercules aircraft.
An approved Lockheed Martin Hercules service centre, ST Aerospace is the premier one stop centre for the C130 Hercules aircraft. With extensive experience and expertise, coupled with comprehensive capabilities in airframe structural repair and design and modification, to component and engine R&O, ST Aerospace has redelivered more than 500 C130 aircraft to date, providing nose to tail solutions to C130 operators globally.
This contract is not expected to have any material impact on the consolidated net tangible assets per share and earnings per share of ST Engineering for the current financial year.

Finmeccanica: Alenia Aermacchi Signs a EUR 170 million Contract for the Supply of Components, Systems and Services for Oman’s Eurofighter Aircraft
(Source: Finmeccanica; issued April 18, 2013)
Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica company, signed a contract worth about EUR 170 million with Eurofighter GmbH for the supply of components, systems and services of Alenia Aermacchi responsibility for the 12 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft ordered by Oman in December 2012. The contract includes services and other activities to be provided by Alenia Aermacchi also for the initial five-year logistics support package requested by the Royal Air Force of Oman.
Alenia will start producing the components for Oman's Eurofighters in 2014 and the first complete aircraft will be delivered to the Royal Air Force of Oman in 2017.
Oman's order represents the European Consortium's third export success story, making the Sultanate of Oman the seventh customer of the aircraft. This order brings the overall number of Eurofighter ordered to date to 719, 517 of which have been contracted, by Italy, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Austria and Oman. This number of orders makes Eurofighter the Europe's largest collaborative program in the defence sector.
Since entry-into-service in 2004, the over 350 aircraft delivered to 20 operational units of six Air Forces have accumulated more than 160,000 flying hours.

Oman's Skyvan replacement nears flight test
Airbus Military's first of eight C295 medium transport and maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) on order for the Royal Air Force of Oman is due to enter flight testing at the company's San Pablo site near Seville on 14 May.
Oman ordered five transports and three MPA in May 2012, as replacements for its aged Shorts Skyvans, with its deal including personnel training. The first of its new aircraft entered the final assembly line in Spain on 27 February.
Once delivered, the new maritime patrol platforms will undertake reconnaissance and anti-piracy missions around the Gulf of Hormuz and other coastal regions, and conduct anti-pollution and exclusive economic zone patrols.
Peter Foster
An original 16 Skyvans were introduced by Oman from the late 1960s, with its fleet having been reduced to a current strength of five by 2009, operating with the air force's 5 Sqn from Salalah. Three of these were modified locally to perform maritime patrol and reconnaissance duties, with the Seavan aircraft (one pictured above) flown from Seeb by 2 Sqn.

Joint Statement by the United States and the Government of the Sultanate of Oman
(Source: US State Department; issued May 22, 2013)
WASHINGTON, DC --- The Governments of the Sultanate of Oman and the United States of America are pleased to announce a deal for the acquisition of a U.S. manufactured ground based air defense system.
This system, which has been selected by the Sultanate of Oman following a thorough evaluation and assessment process, offers high levels of effectiveness, capable of meeting the operational requirements of the Royal Air Force of Oman and providing seamless air protection by virtue of its cutting edge air defense technology.
In the meantime, final negotiations on the procurement of the system are in progress with U.S. defense manufacturer Raytheon Company and a final conclusion of the deal is expected following agreements on the technical aspects of the system, through life support and maintenance and other related matters.
(EDITOR’S NOTE: The Obama administration has not notified Congress of any planned sale of ground-based air-defense systems to Oman, although it has notified plans to sell Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missiles to the United Arab Emirates and to Qatar. Patriot PAC-3 sales are also planned in the region, notably to Kuwait and these have also been offered to Qatar. Quoting “A senior U.S. State Department official,” Reuters reported May 22 that “the deal's value is expected to be $2.1 billion, though the exact size and content were still under negotiation.” It also noted that “Oman and Raytheon did not sign a letter of intent for the arms deal during Kerry's visit ….in contrast to the predictions of U.S. officials earlier this week.)

Royal Navy of Oman accepts first new ship from BAE Systems
There was a ceremony this morning at Portsmouth Naval Base to mark the Omani navy’s interim acceptance of RNOV Al Shamikh. In front of invited guests, workers lowered the BAE Systems flag before Omani sailors raised their own. The ship, a Khareef-class corvette, will now embark on trials before a full acceptance by the Omani navy. Nigel Stewart is the commercial director for BAE Systems’ maritime division. He said: ‘It’s a huge and very proud moment for us. ‘It’s a major milestone in the project. ‘The ship will go out and deliver the capability that it was sent out to do. ‘The people of Portsmouth can be proud at having the skills required to build ships such as these.’ Work will continue on RNOV Al Shamikh’s sister ships, Al Rahmani and Al Rasikh.
