- Oman Vessel Named in Launching Ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base
July 26, 2010 Portsmouth UK | The Royal Navy of Oman's (RNO) second Corvette, Al-Rahmani, was commissioned this morning at Portsmouth Naval Base. It is the second corvette out of three designed and built by BAE Systems for the RNO.
The Commissioning Ceremony was held under the auspices of His Excellency Sayyed Badir bin Saud bin Harib Al-Busaidi the Minister Responsible Defence Affairs in the Sultanate of Oman. The Ceremony was attended by Lord Astor, the Under Secretary of State for Defence in the UK and Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Khamis bin Abdullah Al-Raisi, Commander of the Royal Navy of Oman (CRNO) in addition to a number of VIPs and representatives of the RNO and the UK Royal Navy.
This event reflects the strategic importance given to these state-of-the-art corvettes by the Sultanate of Oman and UK at the time in which BAE Systems is seeking to boost its exports worldwide.
The commissioning of Al-Rahmani comes under the contract (Khareef) signed by the two sides in 2007 in light of which BAE Systems has to design and build three 99 metre corvettes.
The ships have the capacity to serve for prolonged periods overseas and are designed to reinforce the RNO capabilities and support the Naval Force in the protection of the international waters and the surveillance of EEZ.
Alan Johnston, Managing Director of BAE Systems' Surface Ships division, said: "We have been building ships for the RNO for over 30 years and are proud of the close working relationship we have developed, which is helping us to deliver the extremely sophisticated naval capability to the Royal Navy of Oman that you see here today.
"Today's event reflects the significant progress on this programme and reinforces our position as a leader in the global market to design, build and support warships for navies around the world."
On this occasion, Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Khamis bin Abdullah Al-Raisi said:
'By the almighty blessing, RNO celebrated this morning the commissioning of the ship (Al-Rahmani), the second ship of the Khareef Project to enter the service and it is a great fortune that this event coincides with the Sultanates Celebrations of the Blessed Renaissance Day anniversary led by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos the Supreme Commander of SAF and no doubt this inauguration is a further milestone to be added to the RNO achievement record and one of the landmarks of this prosperous era. In fact this project comes as an outcome of the continuous military cooperation between RNO and Royal Navy and enhances the excellent ties between RNO and BAE Systems, assigned with Project Khareef.'
The first ship (Al-Shamikh) was commissioned in July 2009 and will set sail for its first sea trials later this year.

SOURCE:Flight International In fresh blow to Eurofighter, US touts possible F-16 sale to Oman By Stephen Trimble
US defence officials have confirmed that Oman has asked for a potential sale of 18 Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 50/52s fighters for $3.5 billion in a move that dampens the UK government's hopes to offload a batch of new Eurofighter Typhoons.
The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) informed Congress on 3 August that the Royal Air Force of Oman is seeking a "possible" F-16 purchase, which is most likely aimed at replacing 16 Sepecat Jaguars.
The announcement comes five years after Oman purchased a batch of 12 F-16 Block 50s, which are powered by the General Electric F110-GE-129 engine. ShareCreateApture
The DSCA says the potential second batch of F-16s could be Block 50s or Block 52s. The latter is powered by the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engine. The deal also would include the ITT advanced integrated defence electronic warfare suites (AIDEWS) and Northrop Grumman APG-68(V)9 radar.
If the contract is signed, Oman would give Lockheed a fresh boost in the region as the manufacturer seeks to close more F-16 deals with Qatar and Iraq.
But a contract signing for F-16s would mark a surprise reversal for the UK government, which indicated only four months ago that a Typhoon sale in Muscat could be imminent.
UK officials hope to offload Typhoons that the government is committed to buying in Tranche 3 of the Eurofighter programme.
Meanwhile, the F-16 programme remains in demand despite the arrival in six years of its successor the F-35A. On 20 July, Lockheed officials noted the F-16 has a firm backlog of 86 F-16s, including 20 fighters recently ordered as part of Egypt's sixth follow-on order.
The production line in Fort Worth, Texas, is expected to continue through 2013, with new deals possibly extending the programme for several years beyond, Lockheed says.
As a member of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, Oman has joined a regional arms race as tensions with Iran escalate across the Strait of Hormuz. _________________

- Sultanate of Oman Acquires Two Additional C-130J Super Hercules
MARIETTA, Ga. | Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has signed a contract with the Sultanate of Oman for two additional C-130J Super Hercules.
Oman ordered its first C-130J in July 2009, for delivery in 2012. The two additional aircraft will be delivered in late 2013 and early 2014. The first aircraft is of the C130J-30 "long" configuration and the new order is for two C-130J "short" configuration aircraft.
"The C-130J is ideally suited to the operating conditions found in Oman and other areas of the Gulf," said Jim Grant, Lockheed Martin vice president for Air Mobility and Special Operations Forces Programs. "In selecting the C-130J Super Hercules, Oman has recognized all the proven qualities of the world's most advanced airlifter."
Oman currently operates a fleet of three C-130Hs purchased in the early 1980s. The new C-130J fleet will support Omani operations with its outstanding capability to operate out of remote, austere airstrips.

Oman’s first Khareef put through its paces
Al-Shamikh, the first of three new 99m ocean patrol vessels being built by BAE Systems Surface Ships for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) under Project Khareef, has completed its platform and machinery trials during just over three weeks of testing off the south coast of England. Ordered from what was then VT Shipbuilding in January 2007, the three 2,600-tonne displacement Khareef ships will be the largest and most complex surface combatants ever to serve with the RNO. Thales Nederland is principal subcontractor for the combat system scope of supply, while MBDA is equipping the Khareef ships with its VL MICA local area air defence system and MM40 Block 3 Exocet anti-ship missile. Running from 21 January to 16 February, the platform trials programme, overseen by representatives from the RNO, demonstrated the performance of Al-Shamikh’s power, propulsion and navigation systems across a range of evolutions. According to BAE Systems, the ship achieved its 25kt contract speed, and demonstrated excellent seakeeping characteristics. A follow-on programme of combat systems trials is due to start in the second quarter of 2011, leading to a handover to the RNO sometime in the middle of this year. Al-Shamikh will subsequently undergo a period of training with the UK’s Flag Officer Sea Training organisation before transiting to Oman. First-of-class missile firings are expected to be conducted off France en route. The second Khareef vessel, Al-Rahmani, was launched from BAE Systems Surface Ships’ Portsmouth yard in July 2010. The third and final ship of the class is due to be launched in mid-2011. janes.com
