Daewoo wins submarine contract for Indonesian navy
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering signed a contract to build three submarines for the Indonesian navy on Tuesday.
The contract calls for DSME to build three 1,400-ton submarines for the Indonesian navy for a total of $1.1 billion, making the contract the largest single defense contract to be awarded to a Korean firm.
With the addition of the latest contract, the value of Korea’s defense exports so far this year has been pushed up to $2.4 billion, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said. This year’s defense export figure is more than double that recorded last year.
Although Korea’s defense exports have been growing steadily, this year saw the largest year-on-year increase aided by the submarine contract, and the T-50 advanced trainer jet, the DAPA said.
Last year’s defense exports came in at $1.19 billion, while the figure came to $1.17 billion in 2009.
According to DSME, the vessels will be of 61.3 meters in length, and will be capable of carrying a crew of 40 sailors. The submarines will be fitted with eight weapon tubes for torpedoes and other weapons.
The company plans to complete the contract by the first half of 2018.
The company said that it has been working with the Indonesian government since 2005 for the submarine contract. DSME added that previous contracts carried out for the Southeast Asian country contributed to its being awarded the contract in favor of French, German and Russian entities that are traditionally considered to have a technological edge in building diesel-powered submarines.
In 2003 the shipbuilder was contracted for a project upgrading Indonesian submarines, and again won a contract for a depot maintenance project in 2009.

Indonesia to receive Super Tucano in March
Indonesia will receive its first four Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano trainer/light attack aircraft in March 2012.
The aircraft will be based at Abd Saleh air force base in Malang, on Indonesia's main island of Java, where support facilities have been set up for the Brazilian turboprop, said a report by official Indonesian news agency Antara, quoting Indonesian air force colonel Novianto Widadi.
The report added that 12 pilots have been trained for the aircraft, which will perform a flying display at the air force's anniversary celebrations in April.
In November 2010, Jakarta announced that it would acquire 16 Super Tucanos to replace its Rockwell OV-10 Broncos. The aircraft will be used both as trainers and in the light ground attack role. Widadi added that the aircraft will also be used for border patrols.
According to Embraer, the Super Tucano can carry a payload of 1,550kg (3420lb) and, with external tanks, has an endurance of up to eight hours. It can take off and land on an airfield of just 900m (2950ft).
It is armed with two .50 caliber machine guns in the wings with 200 rounds each.
"In addition to its two internal machine guns, the Super Tucano can be configured with additional underwing armament, such as two 20mm gun pods or .50 caliber machine guns, thereby significantly increasing its firepower for missions requiring air-to-ground saturation," said Embraer.
It added that the aircraft can also carry air-to-air missiles such as the Raytheon AIM-9 Sidewinder class, rocket pods, and conventional or guided bombs. The OV-10 has seen extensive combat service in Indonesia. It was used extensively in the former Indonesian province of East Timor, and also conducted anti-guerrilla operations in the low-level insurgencies that Indonesia has periodically suffered in its provinces of Aceh and Irian Jaya.

Jakarta, Indonesia - Six Su-30MK2 aircraft that will be delivered after 2013
(WAPA) - According to "The Jakarta Post", Indonesia has signed a 470 million dollar contract with Russia to purchase six Sukhoi Su-30MK2 jet fighters for the Indonesian Air Force, that will start to be delivered after 2013.
The deal was confirmed by Russian defense-industry, but the Sukhoi aircraft maker and arms exporter "Rosoboronexport" did not release any comments. Indonesian Deputy Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said that his office had handed over the contract to "Rosoboronexport" on December 3, while another contract is still in progress.
At the moment, the Indonesian Air Force has 10 Sukhoi jetfighters - 6 Sukhoi SU-27SKM and 4 Sukhoi SU-30MK2 and is planning to place one squadron of the jetfighters at Hasanuddin Airbase in Makassar.
Russia recently completed a 300 million dollar contract signed in 2007 on the delivery of three Su-30MK2 and three Su-27SKM fighters to Jakarta in addition to two Su-27SK and two Su-30MK fighters purchased in 2003. (Avionews) (0010)

RI ready to modernize its weaponry
Indonesia will start modernizing its military hardware after a decade of internal reform riding on the back of an improving economy, Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro told repoters Monday.
“The Indonesian Military has been involved in internal reforms, such as disengagement from political and business activities,” he told a press conference after a leadership meeting at the ministry.
“All this time, the TNI has refrained from procuring major weapons systems.”
Also attending the press conference were Defense Deputy Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, TNI chief Adm. Agus Suhartono, Army chief of staff Gen. Pramono Edhie Wibowo, Navy chief of staff Adm. Soeparno, Air Force chief of staff Marshal Imam Sufaat, and ministry secretary general Vice Marshal Eris Heryyanto.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Djoko Suyanto attended the leadership meeting and delivered a speech to the participants.
Purnomo said most of the procurement could take a long time to realize from planning to delivery as there were various agencies involved in the process.
“Each individual service will describe their needs to the TNI headquarters, which will submit the request to the ministry,” he said.
“Once agreed, we have to talk with the National Development Planning Board [Bappenas] and the Finance Ministry to find the appropriate funding.”
He said because most procurement processes require a long time to realize, the funding usually involves a multiyear system.
The ministry’s Defense Facilities Agency chief, Maj. Gen. Ediwan Prabowo, said most of the shopping list would be sealed in the first half of this year.
“We are currently still looking for candidates for each weapons system. So we have not yet decided the model and pricing,” he told the press conference.
The shopping list includes various weapons systems for the three services including various types of helicopters, howitzers, multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), various types of ships and anti-aircraft missiles.
Indonesia ended 2011 with large procurements, including six Sukhoi Su-30MKK from Russia worth US$470 million; three submarines from South Korea worth almost $1.1 billion in cooperation with state shipyard PT PAL; nine NC-295 medium transport from Spain worth $325 billion in cooperation with state-owned aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia; 16 KAI T-50 Golden Eagle advanced trainers, worth $400 million, from South Korea; eight Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano counter-insurgency aircraft from Brazil; and Grob G 120TP primary trainer from Germany.
Indonesia’s shopping list in 2012
Army 1. Main battle tank (MBT) 2. Multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) 3. Howitzer 155mm 4. Air defense missile 5. Assault and attack helicopters 6. Anoa armored personnel carrier
Navy 1. Searider rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) 2. Fast patrol boats 3. Guided-missile destroyer 4. Hydro-oceanography vessel 5. Barque tall ship to replace the existing KRI Dewaruci 6. Various auxiliary vessels, including fuel and landing ship tank 7. Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter
Air Force 1. Anti-aircraft missile 2. EC-725 Cougar helicopter 3. 24 units of F-16, grant from the United States, to be retrofitted 4. 4 units of C-130H heavy transport aircraft, grant from Australia, to be retrofitted

Indonesia firm delivers new patrol plane
JAKARTA, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The third of four CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft by PT Dirgantara Indonesia has been delivered to the South Korean coast guard.
The CN-235 is a twin-engine turboprop. It has a range of more than 3,100 miles, a cruise speed of 157 mph and is outfitted with a tactical computer system and tactical navigation.
The aircraft is 70 feet in length and weighs about 21,000 pounds.
"The delivery of another aircraft to the government of South Korea once again shows that the confidence of other nations in PTDI is still going strong," PTDI said. "This confidence will be maintained continuously, to allow PTDI to obtain subsequent contracts not only from the South Korean government but also from customers who require an aircraft of the size of the CN-235.
"Aircraft deliveries are also proving to the world that Indonesian workers are able to provide their contribution to the nation and to the state by using his work to meet the requirements of other nations throughout the world."
The first two aircraft were delivered to South Korea last May under a $94 million contract. PTDI said the fourth will be delivered during the first quarter of this year.

Russia is set to sell up to 60 infantry fighting vehicles to Indonesia in a deal worth more than $100 million, the Izvestia newspaper cited an unnamed military source as saying on Tuesday.
The deal will be finalized on February 10, the source said, adding that 20 BMP-3 vehicles will be delivered before the end of the year.
The Russian army stopped purchasing the vehicles in 2010.
The state-run weapons exporter Rosoboronexport declined to comment.
The Kurganmashzavod arms plant said it would produce modified vehicles for Indonesia.

Indonesia buys nine Airbus military transport jets (AFP) – 1 day ago
SINGAPORE — Indonesia on Wednesday signed a $325.0 million contract with Airbus Military for nine C-295 transport planes to be used for defence, logistical and humanitarian purposes.
The first plane will be sent to the Southeast Asian nation this year, with the remainder scheduled for delivery by 2014.
"This is a proud moment for our country as well as for the Indonesian aerospace industry," said Indonesian Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, at the signing of the deal at the Singapore Airshow.
"The C-295 provides the ideal capacity to respond to Indonesia's current and future military and humanitarian transport needs," he added.
The model is a medium-sized transport plane which can be configured for different operational purposes such as ground surveillance, anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue operations.
The planes will be used for "a variety of roles including military, logistical, humanitarian and medical evacuation missions," according to a statement.
Yusgiantoro did not rule out future purchases of the C-295, saying other branches of the armed forces were interested in the plane.
"The police for instance... are also interested in this. And you know that (the) 295 version that we ordered now is for the Air Force, and probably the army is also interested," he said.
The deal includes a collaboration between state-owned aviation firm PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and Airbus Military, with Indonesia manufacturing parts for the C-295.
The partnership will allow the Indonesian firm to "grow its aerospace business as a tier-one supplier," said PTDI Chief Executive Budi Santoso.
"This will position PTDI on the global aerospace scene and allow us to enhance our skills and workforce," he added.
Indonesia's defence budget totalled $6.39 billion in 2011, ranking second in Southeast Asia behind Singapore.

Indonesian Air Force Eyes More Fighters
SINGAPORE — As the Indonesian air force works on its plan to field around 150-160 combat aircraft in 12 squadrons, it is starting to consider how to replace its fleet of F-5s.
Current plans represent merely a “minimum essential force,” with the actual air force needs being much greater to provide the full range of military capability for a country the size of Indonesia, ACM Imam Sufaat, the service’s chief of staff, tells Aviation Week during the Singapore air show. The current force counts seven squadrons equipped with combat aircraft.
The current fighter modernization plan has the Indonesian air force fielding a fleet of Sukhoi Su-30 Mk2s and Lockheed Martin F-16s, with the latter comprising 24 F-16 Block 25 aircraft being upgraded to Block 52s and four F-16 Block 25 and two F-16 Block 15 aircraft for use as spare parts. The F-16s are to be delivered by July 2014 to form two more squadrons.
The air chief sees the need for more F-16s and Su-30s. While a type decision has yet to be made on the F-5 replacement, the F-16 is the frontrunner.
Growing Fleet
The Su-30 fleet is due to grow in the coming three years as well, with two aircraft to be handed over in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Indonesia is still in the process of finalizing plans for the weapons package for the fighters, with interest in a medium-range missile.
Midyear also should see the arrival of the first of 16 Super Tucanos to replace the OV-10s, with the first of 16 T-50 trainers to be handed over by Korea Aerospace Industries next year to replace Hawk Mk.53s.
The rest of the Hawk fleet is due to be replaced by the South Korean KF-X fighter after Indonesia joined the development program.
To help control the fighters, Indonesia is looking to field an airborne early warning and control system aircraft, although a decision is not expected before 2014. Even though the air force is buying C-295 airlifters, the service chief says the country would be looking for a larger system than the AEW concept put forward by Airbus Military. The AEW aircraft will need more endurance than the C-295 can deliver, he notes.
The fleet of CN-235s for maritime surveillance is being upgraded — with three more added for the navy — and the Boeing 737 maritime patrol aircraft also are due for an update.

Turkey loses bid for Indonesia submarines Indonesia picks up a South Korean offer for three U209 model submarines instead of a Turkish-German joint offer. Still, the two countries may bid for a tender for the more developed U214 models, Jakarta says

Ümit Enginsoy uenginsoy@aol.com
Indonesia has informed a German-Turkish partnership that South Korea has won Jakarta’s competition for U209 submarines and that the duo should instead focus on the sale of more-developed U214 subs to the Southeast Asian giant, a senior Turkish official has said.
The message was conveyed during the visit of Adm. Agus Suhartono, the chief of staff of Indonesia’s military forces, to Turkey last week, the Turkish official said this weekend.
Turkey, led by the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, SSM, and Germany, led by ThyssenKrupp’s shipyard, HDW, entered the Indonesian Navy’s competition of more than $1 billion after it came to an end, effectively ensuring Seoul’s victory.
South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering announced on Dec. 22 that it had won the Indonesian deal $1.1 billion for three submarines.
As for Turkey, a $2 billion submarine deal with HDW for the joint manufacture of six U214 platforms formally took effect in July, the German company said. Turkish procurement officials also confirmed the information. “As a longstanding partner and supplier to the Turkish Navy, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems can now begin executing the order. The order will contribute to securing employment at [ThyssenKrupp’s] HDW in Kiel, as well as at many subcontractors in Germany and Turkey, for the next 10 years,” it said.
A major loan deal between German banks and the Turkish Treasury rescued the multibillion-dollar submarine contract between the Turkish state and Howaldswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW) on the last day of 2010, Turkish procurement officials said earlier.
“We will try to work hard to meet the requirements for the second competition [for the U214 deal],” said the Turkish procurement official.
The Indonesian side also offered a number of consolations to the Turkish side. The Indonesians will come up with a $100 million Turkish proposal to make military radios produced by Aselsan, the procurement official said.
The Indonesians separately plan to propose a facility to produce Roketsan-made missiles after they sign a contract with the company.
Jakarta will also produce FNSS-made 8x8 vehicles.
Turkey and Indonesia are two of the largest Muslim countries and are keen to develop their defense industries and ties.

4 autres j'ai entendu just l'histoire d'une frégate Sigma 105m ...
Citation :
" 6 frégates ex-hollandaises, qui datent des années 60; " 25 corvettes, dont les 4 Sigma et 2 sont conçues et fabriquées localement d'une série en cours de construction ; " 2 SM U209 ; " 35 de grand patrouilleurs dont plus de 25 conçu et construits localement ; " 40 patrouilleurs et vedettes rapides dont 11 de conception et fabrication nationales ; " 10 navires de guerres des mines ; " 33 grand navires amphibies, dont les 5 LPD fabriqués localement, et plus de 50 LCM ; " une vingtaine de navires de soutien ;

Citation :
Indonesia was the first customer for the new design, ordering four 9113 class 91 meter corvettes. In 2010 Indonesia has ordered four larger vessels, the 105m’ Type 10514.
