Citation :
The 57th Adversary Tactics Group undertook some interesting tactics not contained in the overall [scripted] intelligence scenario. These involved surprise threats, generally Red Air [enemy] fighters, entering the air battle unexpectedly. White Force [exercise control] staff would confirm that the threat was Red and Blue Air [the "good guys"] had to react. The tactic worked. An F-16C pilot assigned to the 64th Aggressor Squadron gained the first-ever F-22 kill in Red Flag. [94th commander] Lt. Col. Dirk Smith told AFM: “At least half of the 94th FS crews had less than 50 hours in the F-22 and no matter how magical the F-22, any pilot can make a mistake. The beauty of Red Flag is that we were able to go out and practice our tactics in a challenging scenario, make a mistake, learn a lesson, and be that much better prepared for actual combat.”

Jan 25 2011, 02:12 hrs New Delhi:
Final details are being worked out by the US, but sources said that two of the fighters are set to be flown in for the air show that begins on February 9 and will be showcased as a static display. Defence Ministry officials confirmed that the fighter is likely to make its Indian debut at the air show, making the latest edition of the Aero India the grandest ever.
While it was inducted into the US military in 2005, the stealth aircraft has rarely been seen outside its country and has made appearances only at limited air shows, the first being at Farnborough in 2008. According to a release by the US State department, the only other participation has been at an air show in Chile last year. However, the fighter has also carried out flying demonstrations at the Dubai air show. Its participation at the Aero India would take it up by several notches in the international order of air shows.

Matrix Composites delivers final F-22 part
As the composites-intensive F-22 Raptor fighter jet program winds down, Matrix Composites has finished the its last critical structure for the airplane.
Posted on: 2/11/2011
Matrix Composites (Rockledge, Fla., USA) reports that it has finished its last critical structure on the U.S. F-22 Raptor fighter jet program. Shipment of this part represents the conclusion of a very successful development and production effort for Matrix. Matrix was one of only four companies qualified worldwide to produce specific components related to the aircraft’s low-observable fuselage and critical airframe components. The composites-intensive F-22 was discontinued by the Obama Adminstration in 2010 in a cost-cutting effort. The U.S. is continuing to develop and manufacture the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, which is expected to become the U.S. military's primary fighter jet for the next several decades. In a statement, Matrix stated: "The F-22 Raptor is the nation’s only deployed 5th generation fighter. The aircraft is the 'top gun' of the US military’s arsenal and represents the state-of-the-art in manned fighter aircraft. Although the original build quantities were expected to exceed 500 aircraft, the program was stripped of funding by Defense Secretary Gates and the Obama Administration in early 2010, cutting the number to just 187 aircraft." “It seems like a waste of taxpayer money considering the $300 billion investment made to develop and produce the aircraft” says David Nesbitt, president of Matrix Composites, “Stopping production at just 187 aircraft deprives us of the program’s full potential and adversely affects our domestic industrial base”. Cancellation of the program affects an estimated 95,000 jobs and 1,000 suppliers across the country, including Matrix Composites. Matrix Composites has been manufacturing components on the Raptor since 2005. More than 20 trained aerospace technicians were employed at Matrix using advanced manufacturing methods and proprietary processes to build these critical components. Although the company has been impacted by termination of the F-22, it says it anticipates significant growth over the next three years as other key programs get underway. “We’re pursuing some new opportunities on the F-35 Lightning program that we are very excited about,” says Ray Ringleb, sales and marketing manager at Matrix.

The Case for Reviving the F-22 Fighter China and Russia are developing and fielding sophisticated air defenses and advanced stealth fighters. The Raptor is the only plane that can meet these challenges.
As Congress begins to take up the Obama administration's defense budget, one item not even under discussion needs to be considered. Events of the past 18 months have made clear that it's time to rethink the fate of the F-22 Raptor. The presumptions that led the Senate to cancel funding for this fighter have been turned upside down, as new threats have emerged and old ones have become clearer. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has promised that America's airpower needs will be served by the still-unfinished F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). But that airplane will be smaller, slower and less lethal

Lockheed Martin Support Enables High-Tempo F-22 Deployments Worldwide

07:28 GMT, March 18, 2011 MARIETTA, Georgia | The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is logging a deployment-intensive pace in early 2011 following a busy 2010, and the company continues to provide key support to the fleet as the Raptor projects power globally.
In January and February, the U.S. Air Force had Raptors deployed to Kadena Air Base, Japan, as part of a rotational deployment for a Pacific Air Forces Theater Security Package; to Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, for capabilities enhancement testing; and to Nellis AFB, Nev., for Red Flag, an air combat training exercise. F-22s from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, deployed to Japan performed with exceptional readiness, flying 100 percent of a robust sortie schedule in January.
The world's premier air dominance fighter and the only fully operational 5th generation fighter, the F-22 deployed around the world in 2010, including to Andersen AFB, Guam; Japan; South Korea; and the United Arab Emirates. In a first for the F-22 fleet, Raptors from Holloman AFB, N.M., performed a re-deployment, traveling from Japan to Guam last year. The Holloman Raptors combined with F-22s from Langley AFB to make for 24 total Raptors on Guam at the time.
As the weapon system support integrator, Lockheed Martin supports Raptor deployments through comprehensive and responsive sustainment services as part of a Performance-Based Logistics contract. The company received a $726.6 million contract modification from the Air Force in February for fleet sustainment this year.
When F-22 units deploy, Lockheed Martin field service representatives deploy with them, providing support in areas such as avionics, systems engineering, low observables maintenance, technical information and mission planning. Thanks in part to the contributions of the representatives, Raptor performance in recent global deployments often proved greater than even that of home-station operations.
"The Raptor is a high-demand asset in vital strategic theaters, projecting power, bringing deterrence and enhancing security for the United States and allies," said Jeff Babione, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s F-22 program. "We have been working alongside U.S. Air Force F-22 maintainers to ensure aircraft availability, performance and reliability for pivotal operations around the world."
Deploying to new areas brings new challenges. Highlighting F-22 performance capabilities in an austere overseas climate, 12 Raptors from the 27th Fighter Squadron based at Langley AFB, Va., flew more than 600 sorties and 1,300 hours while deployed to Andersen AFB from early June to mid October last year.
According to Lt. Col. Pete M. Fesler, squadron commander, Lockheed Martin sustainment representatives proved helpful not only in keeping Raptors flying, but in helping squadron maintainers sharpen their skills.
"Lockheed Martin representatives proved a great addition to our maintenance and operations team during our deployment," said Lt. Col. Fesler. "Their engineering, maintenance and system expertise helped to grow our active duty and Air National Guard Airmen into better Raptor maintainers."

JSF Radar Absorbent Coatings Applied to Raptor
The newest F-22 stealth fighters produced for the U.S. Air Force at Lockheed Martin's Marietta, Ga., factory have improved radar absorbent coatings derived from the company's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.
"Some of the [low observables] coatings system and gap-fillers that the F-35 had an advantage on, we have incorporated into the Raptor," said Jeff Babione, vice president and general manager of the F-22 program for Lockheed Martin The new materials do not alter the F-22's radar cross-section, but do improve on the durability of those coatings. The benefit for the Air Force is a reduced maintenance burden, Babione said. "[The F-35 program] had some more robust materials that were more durable and we were able to pull those back on to the F-22," he said. "So our system is better, and the life-cycle cost of the F-22 is reduced." Dan Goure, an analyst at the Lexington Institute, Arlington, Va., agreed that retrofitting the F-22 with the F-35's coatings will save the Air Force a significant amount of time and money when it comes to maintenance. "It's not going to transform the airplane, but what it's going to really do is make it much cheaper to operate the F-22 fleet, which is terribly important given its small size," he said. Despite Lockheed Martin's statement that the F-35-derived coatings would not alter the F-22's radar cross-section, Goure said he suspects the new materials are likely to improve upon the Raptor's already impressive signature. "I would be very surprised if this wasn't an improvement in stealth characteristics," he said. Lockheed Martin only had to make minor tweaks to the F-35's radar absorbent materials in order to adapt the technology to the F-22. Though the radar cross-section requirements for the Raptor and the F-35 are slightly different, fundamentally the physics and chemistry of the coatings are the same, Babione said. For installation into the Raptor, the F-35 coatings likely needed to be modified to deal with the high supersonic cruise-speeds and extreme altitudes at which the F-22 routinely operates, Goure said. "It's operating at a higher altitude typically and [at] faster speeds, and that would put different stresses on the material," he said. The Raptor can cruise at speeds around Mach 1.8 above 50 000 feet without afterburners. At the moment, the latest Lot 9 production F-22s only have some of the new stealth coatings installed. Other improved stealth materials "are still in final qualification testing and will enter the field next year," he said. Once testing is complete, plans are in place to retrofit the entire F-22 fleet with the coatings.

Air Force grounds F-22s over oxygen system concerns
These U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor fighter jets were put on display at an air base in Osan, South Korea, in 2010
Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. Air Force has grounded its entire F-22 Raptor fleet amidst continuing concern over how the fighter jet provides oxygen to the pilot, according Capt. Jennifer Faerrau, a spokesperson for the Air Force's Air Combat Command. The stand-down order was made Tuesday but is just now becoming public. It's unclear how long the stand down will last. There are about 165 Raptors in the fleet. Since January, the aircraft already had been kept at altitudes under 25,000 feet during an ongoing investigation into a November crash. Flying above that altitude could cause a pilot to black out from lack of oxygen and lose control. The stand-down affects all routine training and other missions, Faerrau said. The Air Force is looking at all the systems on this new-generation fighter jet, but one area of focus is the On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS), according to Ferrau.
The order came from Gen. William Fraser, commander of Air Combat Command, which is based at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Lockheed Fort Worth ships last F-22 fuselage
That dark object in the background draped with the Texas flag is the final mid-fuselage section for an F-22 Raptor to be produced in Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth plant. Lockheed employees saluted the final Raptor structure they built Thursday with a ceremony on the factory floor. The last mid-body was loaded into its shipping container and closed. Later F-22 team members officially deactivated the Raptor mid-body assembly line and sent the last structure off to Lockheed's Marietta, Ga. facility where the fighter jet’s final assembly takes place. This was the 195th mid-fuselage produced in Fort Worth, including development and production aircraft.
