The Mexican Navy is scheduled to begin series production of an indigenously designed unmanned aerial system (UAS) from late 2016 according to a report released by the Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) in early August.

The project is known as the Mexican Navy Tactical Air Reconnaissance Autonomous patrol System (SPARTAAM: Sistema de Patrullaje Autónomo de Reconocimiento Táctico Aéreo de la Armada de México) which falls within the Navy's larger UAS-ISR programme that includes a family of UAS platforms.

The Mexican Navy is participating in its first amphibious landing exercise alongside US, Japanese, and New Zealand forces from 31 August to 9 September.

Exercise 'Dawn Blitz 2015' is a multinational exercise held off the California coast by the US Navy and US Marine Corps (USMC).

According to the USMC, the US forces and partner nations "will conduct live-fire training at sea and ashore, Maritime Prepositioning Force (MPF) training, sea-basing operations, and tactical amphibious operations from ship to shore".

The Mexican Navy task force includes Usumacinta , a Newport-class landing ship tank (LST) with an Mi-17 helicopter, a company of 130 marines, and a group of special forces; and Centenario de la Revolución , a 1,680-tonne Oaxaca-class ocean patrol vessel equipped with a AS565MB Panther multirole helicopter and organic interceptor vessels.

The Mexican Air Force has selected the Cessna 206H Stationair to fulfill a requirement for 12 tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, it was disclosed by a May 2015 investment project document that was published by the country's Ministry of the Treasury and Public Finance in late August.

The document states that the air force intends to use the forward-looking, infrared-equipped aircraft for tracking and interception operations in direct support of ground troops. The 206Hs will operate as part of the Air Surveillance Squadron Command Post (PM-EVA, or Puesto de Mando del Escuadrón de Vigilancia Aérea) based at BAM-1 Santa Lucia airbase in Mexico State, but are usually deployed to Cozumel in Quintana Roo and Hermosillo, Sonora.

According to the document, PM-EVA is a special unit that reports directly to the Ministry of National Defense's High Command. That unit is currently equipped with one Fairchild C-26A Metro, two Beechcraft King Air 90A, and two Schweizer SA2-37A surveillance aircraft, most of which are presently suffering low availability rates. The King Air's avionics are reported as being obsolete, with the aircraft requiring a major 3,000-hour maintenance overhaul. However, these and the other ISR platforms will be augmented by the 206Hs rather than replaced by them.

In addition to the PM-EVA, the air force operates several surveillance flights equipped with three additional C-26A Metro, two Embraer EMB-145MP, and one EMB-145AEW platform. These three ISR flights are taking delivery of at least six Beechcraft King Air 350ER aircraft that have been modified for the ISR mission.

The document states that the Cessna 206H Stationair was selected on the basis of cost, adding that at USD325,000 per unit, plus USD287,000 for the surveillance package, presented the lowest price at USD612,000 each (compared with USD916,000 and USD845,000 for the Cessna Corvalis TTx and the Diamond DA50 Super Star alternatives). Procurement of the surveillance package will take place later in 2015, with deliveries of the ISR-configured Cessnas scheduled to begin in 2016 and run through to the end of 2017. The Cessna 206H is expected to remain in service with the Mexican Air Force until 2042.

Mexico purchases Dominator UAS, Latin American state orders Hermes 900

Mexico has purchased the Dominator XP ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) gathering unmanned aerial system (UAS), while an unnamed Latin American state acquired a Hermes 900 platform, the Israeli makers of both systems announced recently.

Aeronautics sold its largest UAS, the Dominator XP, to the Mexican government, which intends to use it for domestic security missions, the company announced on 29 September. The Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) aircraft completed "a series of maiden flights in Mexico", Aeronautics added.

The sale was facilitated by Mexican security company Balam. Based on a DA-42 twin star commercial plane, the Dominator XP offers long-range ISR flights, Aeronautics said.

Mexico's Morelos 3 communications satellite launched

Mexico's Morelos 3 satellite has been placed in orbit by a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 421 rocket, Lockheed Martin announced on 2 October.

ULA is a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing, and the launch was conducted by Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services.

The vessel is part of the Mexican Satellite System (MEXSAT) network, meant to provide L- and Ku-band secure communications for Mexico's national security forces - linking aircraft, vessels, land vehicles, and helicopters - and bolster its civilian telecommunications capability.

A Mexican International Launch Services (ILS) Proton-M Briz-M Phase III rocket, transporting a Boeing Satellite Systems 702HP-GEM satellite that was to have been MEXSAT 1 Centenario in the constellation, exploded on 16 May.

Mexican Navy Orders Three Damen Stan Patrol 4207 Patrol Vessels

The Mexican Navy (Secretaria de Marina - SEMAR)and Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group have signed contracts for three, 42-metre patrol vessels in addition to their existing fleet. All ships will be of the Damen Stan Patrol 4207 design.


This contract is again proof of the good, ongoing relationship between the Mexican Navy and Damen. The three SPa 4207 vessels, known in Mexico as the Ténochtitlan class, will be built by the Mexican Navy Yard ASTIMAR 1 in Tampico. Damen will provide the engineering, material package, technical assistance and crew training.

The vessels will be named after Mexican historical sites and are expected to be launched in 2016. With these three patrol vessels, the total number of vessels in the Ténochtitlan class will come to ten.

Damen Coastal and Offshore Patrol Vessels already operate for years in the coastal waters of the USA, Canada, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Mexico, Honduras, Cape Verde and the Netherlands.

Mexico's new presidential Boeing 787-8 arrives

The new Mexican presidential aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, on 3 February landed at Mexico City International Airport where it was received by the Presidency's Air Transports Coordinator General (Coordinadora General de Transportes Aéreos de la Presidencia: CGTAP).

According to a statement from Mexico's Presidency, the new Boeing 787-8 was concluding a series of test and obtaining full certification from the US Federal Aviation Authority prior to its arrival in Mexico. CGTAP aircrews and ground maintenance teams will finalise training before the aircraft can start operating as presidential transport, the statement said.

The legacy Boeing 757-200, which has been in service as presidential transport for the last 28 years, will be retained by the CGTAP as back-up aircraft to the Boeing 787-8.

The Mexican Air Force (FAM) now has a fleet of 33 Beechcraft T-6C+ Texan II trainers, a military source told IHS Jane's on 3 February.

A total of 48 aircraft have been ordered by the FAM since January 2012, when an original contract for six planes was placed.

A FAM officer told IHS Jane's the current fleet includes 11 aircraft attached to the Air Force Air-Tactical Military School (EMAATFA), based at Air Force Base (BAM) N°11. There are 12 T-6C+ aircraft with Air Squadron (EA) 402 at BAM N°2 in Ixtepec, eight with EA 204 at BAM N°18 in Hermosillo, and a pair with EA 203 that have not deployed to the unit's base yet.

The EMAATFA's aircraft are part of two successive orders for six (one was lost in a crash in April 2015), and the planes serving with in the other squadrons are all part of a third batch of 24 aircraft that is still being delivered. EA 203 has yet to receive an additional six aircraft while EA 201 at BM N°4 in Cozumel is awaiting eight planes in 2017 to replace its Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainers.

All FAM T-6C+ are capable of carrying weapons, but no arms have yet been delivered or fitted on the aircraft.

Nouveau lot d’UH-60M pour le Mexique !




Un nouveau lot de trois hélicoptères Sikorsky UH-60M « Blackhawk » de transport a été livré à l'armée de l'air mexicaine (GPA). Les hélicoptères sont la base aérienne (BAM) N° 11 à Santa Gertrudis, dans l’Etat du Chihuahua.

Commande additionnelle :

Cette livraison fait partie d’une commande additionnelle passée en avril 2015 pour 4 Sikorsky UH-60M « Black Hawk ». Le Mexique exploite actuellement trois UH-60M « Black-Hawk » qui ont été donnés par les Etats-Unis, grâce à l'Initiative Merida en 2011 pour 110 millions de dollars. Huit autres sont actuellement en commande.

Une première commande de 2014:

Cette nouvelle commande fait suite celle passée en 2014 par le Mexique, pour 18 hélicoptères Sikorsky UH-60M pour un montant évalué à 680 millions de dollars. Elle comprend les équipements associés ainsi que la formation et le soutien logistique.

Le Sikorsky UH-60M sélectionné pour le Mexique :

Les hélicoptères Sikorsky UH-60M «Black-Hawk» mexicains reprennent la motorisation de type General-Electric T-700-701D et recevront des équipements standards en service dans l’armée américaine avec par exemple : les systèmes de navigation GPS/INS embarqués, deux mitrailleuses M134 de 7,62 mm, un systèmes de planification de mission de type AN/AVS-9 et des lunettes de vision nocturne. En matière de communication, les radios Rockwell Collin AN/ARC-210 et RT- 8100 équiperont les appareils.

L’UH-60M est déjà en service dans la Marine mexicaine avec trois hélicoptères livrés en août 2011. Ces appareils ont été remis par l’US Northern Command dans le cadre de l’Initiative Merida, qui est conçue pour aider les forces mexicaines dans leur lutte contre les cartels de la drogue et d’autres activités criminelles organisées. La police dispose également de 3 UH-60M livrés en 2011.

Airbus Helicopters advances Panther MBe deliveries

Airbus Helicopters will accelerate deliveries of its AS565 MBe Panther anti-submarine warfare rotorcraft following requests from the Indonesian and Mexican navies – its sole customers for the new variant.

Initial examples were due to be handed over to the services in mid-2017, but this has now advanced to late-2016, says the manufacturer.

Airbus says this has been enabled thanks to changes to the production process which have cut lead times by 30% for final assembly and flight-line operations. This saved “several months” on the first serial aircraft, which conducted its maiden flight in November.

Final assembly has shifted from a static production line to a takt flow line and Airbus Helicopters says it has implemented an integrated team to tackle issues much earlier in the build process.

The first production aircraft is undergoing avionics and mission systems testing in Marignane, France, with qualification expected during the summer.

Airbus Helicopters has 21 Panther MBes on order – 11 for Indonesia and 10 for Mexico, dating from November and June 2014, respectively.

The latest variant of the long-running platform, the MBe gains uprated 1,129shp (842kW) Turbomeca Arriel 2N engines, which offer a 15% power increase over the 2C models they replace and lift maximum take-off weight by 200kg (441lb) to 4.5t.

Earlier editions of the manufacturer’s product literature had suggested a certification target of late 2013 for the AS565 MBe.

Russian Helicopters fulfills first contract with the Mexican Secretariat of the Navy

Russian Helicopters, part of State Corporation Rostec, has fulfilled its first contract for after-sale maintenance of multirole Mi-17-1V helicopters operated by the Mexican Navy.“This is our first contract with the Naval Secretariat of Mexico. It was fulfilled in full and on time,” said Igor Chechikov, Russian Helicopter's deputy CEO. “Mexico is one of our key partners in Latin America; it has quite an extensive fleet of Russian-made helicopters. In 2016, we will expand cooperation with our Mexican partners in terms of after-sale service. The parties are already involved in negotiations on these issues.”

Arcturus T-20 JUMP VTOL UAS Deployed with the Mexican Navy

Arcturus UAV reports the Mexican Navy has deployed their T-20 JUMP Fixed Wing VTOL UAV for unspecified operations in Mexico. The customer took delivery of the VTOL system in March. The T-20 JUMP is a VTOL variant of Arcturus UAV's catapult launched T-20 platform. The T-20 JUMP operates without any special launch or recovery equipment. Gross payload capacity is 60 lbs. The Mexican Navy configuration with EO/IR sensor has approximately 15 hours of endurance and 75 mile data link range. An EO/IR and EW capable version offers 11 hours of endurance. Mexico has operated a fleet of catapult launch T-20s since 2014.
