Britain delivers first Eurofighter jets to Saudi
LONDON (AFP) — Saudi Arabia has taken delivery of two Eurofighter Typhoon combat jets, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Friday, the first of a massive order which fell into doubt over an arms scandal. Saudi Assistant Defence and Aviation Minister Prince Khaled bin Sultan received the two fighter jets on Thursday in a ceremony at manufacturer BAE Systems' Warton site in northwest England. Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz and Britain's armed forces minister Bill Rammell also attended, the MoD said. The two fighters were the first out of an order for an eventual 72 that has been valued at up to 20 billion pounds (32.9 billion dollars), including armaments and long-term servicing. Saudi Arabia is the first country outside Europe to have the Typhoon, a multi-role aircraft produced by a BAE Systems-led consortium of European firms. The deal was first announced in August 2006, but then fell into doubt due to a British investigation into massive corruption allegations in earlier arms deals between Saudi Arabia and BAE Systems that implicated senior officials of both countries. The investigation into the so-called Yamamah deals was called off by the British government in December 2006 on grounds of "national security" and "public interest," and the final contract for the Typhoon aircraft was signed in September 2007. The purchase will help the Saudis upgrade their air force from its current fleet of BAE's 1980s-vintage Tornado F3s and US-made Boeing F-15s. Under the original deal, BAE is to deliver 24 Typhoons completely built to the Saudis, and another 48 are to be assembled inside Saudi Arabia as the country seeks to build up its own aeronautic industry capabilities. "The Royal Saudi Air Force is getting a fantastic aircraft," said Rammell. "Typhoon is a world-class, multi-role aircraft and will provide the RSAF with the defence capability it needs to meet the defence challenges of today and for the foreseeable future. "The industrial benefits of the project are also substantial for both nations and will help to sustain several thousand, skilled jobs in the UK and Saudi Arabia over the next 10 years." Prince Khaled, who also commands the RSAF, said the new aircraft were "not to threaten anyone but to protect and secure the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the coming decades," Saudi state news agency SPA reported. But Riyadh is known to want to maintain air superiority over rival Iran amid fears that Tehran is seeking to extend the range of its air force to full region-wide capability. According to Lebanon-based defence news service Tactical Newswires, the Saudis will soon begin meetings with US officials to discuss buying F-16 fighters.

Lockheed Martin To Deliver Sniper® Advanced Targeting Pods To the Royal Saudi Air Force
ORLANDO, FL, June 15th, 2009 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has signed a foreign military sales contract to deliver Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATPs) to the Royal Saudi Air Force. This is the first phase of a multi-year $100 million precision sensor modernization program to replace Lockheed Martin LANTIRN targeting and navigation pods used aboard Royal Saudi Air Force F-15S aircraft since the mid 1990s.
“The Royal Saudi Air Force has been a valued customer for nearly two decades,” said John Rogers, Saudi Sniper ATP program manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “With this contract to deliver the Sniper pod for their F-15S aircraft, Lockheed Martin can continue to provide the Royal Saudi Air Force with the latest in advanced targeting pod technology.”
Packaged in a single lightweight pod, Sniper ATP’s enhanced image clarity provides critical long-range positive identification of targets and real-time targeting for weapons. Its state-of-the-art tracker enables employment of advanced laser-guided weapons against moving targets. The only fielded targeting pod incorporating meta-data in every frame of video, the date/time stamp and coordinate information further ensure accuracy throughout intelligence and command and control functions.
Currently flying on the U.S. Air Force and multinational F-16, F-15, B-1, F-18, Harrier, A-10, B-52 and Tornado aircraft, the Sniper pod’s common software and hardware interface design enables users to “plug and play” across services and multiple platforms, providing a common software and hardware configuration across aircraft fleets.
The Sniper ATP is currently in service with the U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard and 10 international air forces and coalition partners.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 146,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.

Saudi weighs Eurofighter, F-15 for new jet deal * Saudi Arabia steps up efforts to renew combat jet fleet * Saudi Arabia may double Eurofighter purchase - sources * Talks also held with Boeing over more F-15s - sources * Fighter competitions hot topic at Paris air show (Adds analyst quote, background) By Tim Hepher and Andrea Shalal-Esa PARIS, June 18 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia is stepping up efforts to acquire advanced fighter jets to renew its combat fleet amid growing security concerns in the Gulf region over Iran, two sources following the matter said on Thursday. Riyadh is in talks with Britain over possibly doubling a recent purchase of 72 Eurofighter Typhoons with an add-on purchase buttressed by a support deal and has held exploratory talks with Boeing on adding more F-15s, the sources said. "Saudi Arabia has not finalised its requirements or decided if it will hold a competition or go with one player," said a source closely following the discussions. Saudi Arabia is expected to split the purchase into two batches of 36 and there is potential for a total of more than 100 planes as it continues to renew its fleet of 276 combat jets, said one of the sources. They both agreed to speak only on condition of anonymity because of the issue's sensitivity. Britain's BAE Systems, which coordinates production of the Eurofighter Typhoons recently sold to Saudi Arabia, and F-15 manufacturer Boeing both declined to comment. The Eurofighter consortium, which contains BAE Systems, European aerospace group EADS and Finmeccanica of Italy, also declined to comment. Britain sold Saudi Arabia 72 Typhoons in 2006, the first of which are just starting to be delivered. The aircraft will serve as a partial replacement for the Saudi fleet of Anglo-German-Italian Tornados, but military analysts have long expected the kingdom to return to the market for upgrades to the rest of its Tornados and U.S.-built F-5s. Growing demand from the Middle East and Asia for fighters, fuelled by security fears and firm commodity prices, has been a key theme this week at the Paris Air Show. Major negotiations with Saudi Arabia are held at government level but the world's largest air show offers an opportunity to sound out prices, availability and performance. The Pentagon's top arms sales official was in Paris for the show at the same time as Saudi military representatives, and held a total of more than 40 meetings with foreign delegations. The show generated fewer commercial orders than in years past, with the focus on large weapons competitions underway in India, Brazil, Japan and across the Middle East. BAE Systems also declined comment on a report in the Daily Mail that Saudi Arabia was considering buying more Typhoons. At 1326 GMT, BAE Systems shares were trading up 2.4 percent to 344 pence. "For BAE the sentiment would be very good -- people are a little concerned that global defence expenditure has peaked, so any new orders would help allay those concerns," said Zafar Khan, defence analyst at Societe Generale. "The UK government would love to sell more Eurofighters as they want to take a smaller consignment themselves. For Saudi Arabia, with oil at $70 a barrel their cash flow is good, while it has quite a few squadrons of Tornados that are around 25 years old and need to be replaced." Boeing is meanwhile shopping for partners to co-fund development of a proposed new F-15 "Silent Eagle", a version aimed at Asian and Middle East markets that would feature special coatings to reduce its radar signature and other survivability improvements to go up against the F-35. The United Arab Emirates is negotiating to buy French Rafales, a Dassault-built plane seeking its first export order amid competition from the Lockheed F-16, according to defence industry sources. Oman and Kuwait are among nations also interested in fighter purchases, military sources said.
