(Reuters) - The Iraqi government is seeking to buy 36 advanced F-16 fighters from the U.S., American military officials familiar with the request told the Wall Street Journal.


This move could help Iraq reduce its reliance on U.S. air power and potentially allow more American forces to withdraw from the country than had been proposed.

The F-16, made by Lockheed Martin Corp, is the most sophisticated weapons system Iraq has attempted to purchase so far.

Late in July, the U.S. Department of Defense had approved up to $10.7 billion in arms sales for Iraq, including a $2.16 billion sale of M1A1 Abrams tanks built by General Dynamics Corp.

The U.S. recently announced F-16 sales to Morocco and Romania. Those sales, each for roughly $100 million per plane with training, related equipment and support included, offer an indication of how lucrative the Iraq deal could be for Lockheed Martin and its suppliers.

Iraq now appears determined to significantly expand the air power of its military, which has become more competent and confident in recent months but depends heavily on the U.S. for air support.

Iraq quickly has become one of the biggest weapons buyers in the world as it seeks to strengthen and professionalise its fighting force.

No one was available at the U.S. Department of Defense for comment.

In terms of its front-line fighters, its chosen F-16IQ Block 52s show a pattern of slight downgrades from the more advanced F-16C/D Block 52 base systems. The request’s determined avoidance of sophisticated air to ground weapons like GPS-guided JDAMs, or advanced air-to-air missiles, also seems designed to assuage regional fears. The net effect seems cleverly calibrated to give Iraq an air defense force that can handle aging threats from Syria or Iran relatively well, and perform strike missions within Iraq, without being a serious threat to more advanced air forces in the region. possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Iraq for 12 FIREFINDER Radars and associated
equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $428 million.

The Government of Iraq has requested a possible sale of 6 AN/TPQ-36(V)11 FIREFINDER Radar Systems, 6
AN/TPQ-37(V)9 FIREFINDER Radars, 3 Meteorological Measuring Sets, 86 AN/VRC-92 export variant
Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems, 12 Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data Systems, 3
Improved Position and Azimuth Determining Systems, 63 M1152A1 and 3 M1151A1 High Mobility
Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, 12 M1083A1 Family of Medium Tactical Utility Vehicles, government
furnished equipment, common hardware and software, communication support equipment, tools and test
equipment, spare and repair parts, support equipment, publications and technical data, personnel training and
training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering, logistics, and technical support services, and
other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $428 million.

This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to
improve the security of a friendly country. This proposed sale directly supports the Iraq government and serves
the interests of the Iraqi people and the United States.

The purchase of these target acquisition radars will enhance the Iraqi Army’s foundational defense capability.

The radars will significantly reduce the vulnerability of Iraqi forces to indirect fire attacks and provide them
with the information to respond to such attacks.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The prime contractors will be Thales Raytheon Systems in Fullerton, California; Smith-Detection Technologies
in Edgewood, Maryland, ITT Corporation in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Raytheon Company in Fort Wayne, Indiana;
and L-3 Communications in Budd Lake, New Jersey. There are no known offset agreements proposed in
connection with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require U.S. Government or contractor representatives to travel to
Iraq for a period of six weeks for equipment de-processing/fielding, system checkout, new equipment training,
and logistics support.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

mais non 2.4MM $ c'est les F16 avec tout ce qui va avec, les entraînements, les avions d'entrainement, les simulateurs ...
la je crois que c'est pas des nouveaux f16, c'est des ex USAF probablement, et ce sont pas des block 52+

faut pas dire n´importe quoi
200M$ c´edt pour une partie du contrat,il y´a deja eu d´autres
notre premiere tranche etait ~233M$,pour le premier materiel de constcution..

la version prévue pour l'irak est le F-16 IQ block52 qui est moins performant que notre F-16 C/D

Y a pas un autre batch de prévu aussi ? Il me semblait qu'Eurocopter allait intégrer la roquette Cirit et vu les tensions avec l'Irak actuellement, je pensais qu'ils avaient annulé.
