(Reuters) - The Iraqi government is seeking to buy 36 advanced F-16 fighters from the U.S., American military officials familiar with the request told the Wall Street Journal.
This move could help Iraq reduce its reliance on U.S. air power and potentially allow more American forces to withdraw from the country than had been proposed.
The F-16, made by Lockheed Martin Corp, is the most sophisticated weapons system Iraq has attempted to purchase so far.
Late in July, the U.S. Department of Defense had approved up to $10.7 billion in arms sales for Iraq, including a $2.16 billion sale of M1A1 Abrams tanks built by General Dynamics Corp.
The U.S. recently announced F-16 sales to Morocco and Romania. Those sales, each for roughly $100 million per plane with training, related equipment and support included, offer an indication of how lucrative the Iraq deal could be for Lockheed Martin and its suppliers.
Iraq now appears determined to significantly expand the air power of its military, which has become more competent and confident in recent months but depends heavily on the U.S. for air support.
Iraq quickly has become one of the biggest weapons buyers in the world as it seeks to strengthen and professionalise its fighting force.
No one was available at the U.S. Department of Defense for comment.

US Navy Delivers Final Coastal Patrol Boat to Iraq
The U.S. Navy delivered the final 35-meter patrol boat (PB 312) to the Iraqi navy at the Umm Qasr naval facility July 5, after successfully completing reactivation in Bahrain.
This is the last vessel in the current 12-ship procurement designed to help reconstitute Iraq's ability to enforce maritime sovereignty and security in the Northern Persian Gulf.
"The team successfully delivered all 12 important assets to the Iraqi navy, supporting Iraq's security requirements," said Frank McCarthey, program manager for Support Ships, Boats and Craft.
The U.S. Navy and Swiftships Shipbuilders LLC, Morgan City, La., supported the Iraqi navy in the procurement and construction of the patrol boats. The boats are armed with a 30mm gun weapon system, provide for a crew of 25, and are capable of reaching 30 knots.
The Support Ships, Boats and Craft Program Office in the U.S Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships, is managing the acquisition of the patrol boats as a foreign military sales case. In addition, the program office delivered two 60-meter offshore support vessels to the Iraqi navy, Dec. 20.
PEO Ships manages the design and construction of all U.S. Navy destroyers, amphibious ships, special mission and support ships, as well as a wide range of boats and craft for U.S. agencies and foreign military sales.

Iraq requests GBADS and mobile troposcatter radio sale from US 7 August 2013 The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of two potential foreign military sales (FMS) of ground-based air defence systems (GBADS) and mobile troposcatter radio systems, alongside associated equipment to Iraq.
Under the first estimated $2,403bn sale, Iraq has requested supply of 40 Avenger fire units, 681 Stinger reprogrammable micro-processor (RMP) Block I 92H missiles, 13 AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radars, seven AN/YSQ-184D forward area air defence command, control, intelligence (FAAD C2I) systems and 75 AN/VRC-92E SINCGARS radios.
The package also includes three Hawk XXI batteries, including six battery fire direction centres, six high-powered illuminator radars, 216 MIM-23P Hawk tactical missiles, two mobile battalion operation centres (BOC), three Hawk XXI BOC air defence consoles, 1DS/GS Shop 20, one DS/GS Shop 21, one mini-certified round assembly facility (MCRAF), as well as air command and control (C2) systems and surveillance radars for the integrated air defence systems.
The integrated air defence systems feature TPS-77 long-range radars (LRR), a Omnyx-I0 air command and control system and ten medium-range radars.
Additional equipment being supplied under the first sale includes ground air transmit ultra-high frequency radio capability, facilities and construction for one underground air defence operations centre and two air defence sector operations centres, spare and repair parts amongst others.Under the second estimated $339m sale, the US will supply 19 mobile troposcatter radio systems, along with ten mobile microwave radio systems, spare and repair parts, personnel training and training equipment, as well as other associated elements of programme and logistics support.
Primarily aimed at modernising Iraq's armed forces, the GBADS will enable Iraq to contribute to regional air defences and reduce its vulnerability to air attacks by offering situational awareness of the national airspace and a baseline tactical radar and threat intercept capability.
The mobile troposcatter radios and services are scheduled to provide critical redundancy for national level command and control.
Prime contractors for the first sale include Lockheed Martin, Thales Raytheon Systems, Boeing, American General, Northrop Grumman, Kratos Defense and Aerospace and Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.
Raytheon will also serve as the prime contractor for the second FMS programme

Iraq negotiates with U.S. the purchase of 200 Bradley M2A2 ODS armoured infantry fighting vehicles.
The Iraqi government is negotiating with the US government and BAE Systems to purchase 200 Bradley M2A2 ODS (Operation Desert Storm) Fighting Vehicles sometime during the next 15 months, according to BAE officials. (Source DefenseNews)
The potential deal is expected sometime in 2014 and could come just before another expected agreement is reached with Saudi Arabia to buy Bradleys in 2015. The Iraq contract would provide recently upgraded M2A2 ODS (Operation Desert Storm) variants to the Baghdad government, the same vehicles that the US Army National Guard uses.
If the deals eventually go through, they’ll follow on about $4.3 billion worth of contracts the Iraqi government has requested in recent weeks from the US government for 50 Stryker infantry carriers, helicopters and air defense systems.
There is also a pending $750 million deal to do maintenance work on Iraqi M113s, Humvees, M88s and other ground vehicles, which Signorelli said BAE will likely bid on as part of a team with industry partners.
The M2A2 Bradley AIFV (Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle) was introduced in the U.S. Army in 1988, it's an improved version of the standard vehicle Bradley M2A1.
After Operation Desert Storm (First Gulf War in 1991), the M2A2 was upgraded again with the addition of an eye-safe carbon dioxide laser rangefinder, global positioning system and compass, combat identification system, and thermal viewer for the driver. The 1423 M2A2 Bradleys brought up to this standard were referred to as M2A2 ODS (Operation Desert Storm).
