Lockheed Martin Receives $1.05 Billion, Five-year U.S. Navy Contract for MH-60R/S Cockpits and Integrated Systems

WASHINGTON, April 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navy awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) a $1.05 billion, five-year contract to provide more than 200 digital cockpits and integrated mission systems and sensors for the Navy MH-60R "Romeo" and MH-60S "Sierra" helicopters.

"U.S. Navy crews operating the 300-plus MH-60 Romeo and Sierra helicopters already in the fleet understand just how critical these aircraft are to protecting our ships from surface and undersea threats," said Rear Adm. Paul Grosklags, U.S. Naval Air Systems vice commander. "This contract represents the Navy's commitment to build and field the most technologically advanced maritime helicopter fleet in the world."

Specifically, the new multi-year contract includes 162 cockpits, integrated missions systems and sensors for MH-60R "Romeo," an anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare helicopter. It also funds 62 digital cockpits to complete the Navy's program of record for Sierra aircraft, used for ship-to-ship cargo resupply, search and rescue, and close-in defense of Navy ships.

A multi-year procurement contract such as this one must meet rigorous criteria before being approved by Congress, including being able to demonstrate double-digit cost savings.

"This contract award ensures uninterrupted, on-time deliveries of the MH-60R and MH-60S helicopter to the U.S. Navy fleet," said Dan Spoor, vice president of aviation systems for Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems & Sensors business. "Plus the multi-year structure, versus an annual contract, allows us to provide our customer with more than 10 percent savings annually, surpassing Pentagon cost predictions."

Lockheed Martin provides the digital cockpit common to the MH-60R and MH-60S, and integrates the mission systems and sensors aboard the MH-60R helicopter in Owego, N.Y.

Both aircraft are designed and manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford, Conn.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs about 123,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's net sales for 2011 were $46.5 billion.

Boeing Receives Additional Laser JDAM Contract from US Navy

The Boeing Company received a $12.5 million contract from U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) on March 12 for 1,116 Laser Joint Direct Attack Munition (Laser JDAM) sensors. This is NAVAIR’s third Low Rate Initial Production order for its Direct Attack Moving Target Capability (DAMTC). It follows an $8.3 million NAVAIR order for 700 laser sensors on Jan. 31 that allows the U.S. Air Force to maintain its Laser JDAM combat inventory levels.

Deliveries for both laser sensor contracts will begin in April and continue through February 2013.

“The Boeing JDAM family of weapons has been used by warfighters and their allies around the globe for more than a decade,” said Debbie Rub, Boeing vice president and general manager, Missiles and Unmanned Airborne Systems. “The advanced capability of Laser JDAM offers our customers unparalleled accuracy and flexibility against a wider range of emerging threats on today’s battlefields.”

JDAM is a low-cost guidance kit that converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into near precision-guided weapons. Laser JDAMs have added the capability to prosecute moving targets, maritime threats and other relocatable targets of opportunity. Boeing intentionally designed its JDAM kit to be modular so that the product can mature with a variety of other technological upgrades, such as wing kits that triple its range, improved immunity to GPS jamming, and an all-weather radar sensor.

“Laser JDAMs are being used more and more by the U.S. Navy and Air Force,” said Kristin Robertson, director, Boeing Direct Attack Weapons. “The laser variant has been incredibly effective in attacking moving targets accurately and reliably, with minimal collateral damage. Adding the laser sensor to a conventional JDAM kit is an affordable option that’s easy for ordnance crews to install and very straightforward for pilots already familiar with JDAM.”

Boeing completed the development and testing cycle for its Laser JDAM less than 17 months after it was identified as an urgent operational need in early 2007. The company delivered the first production laser sensor kits to the U.S. Air Force in May 2008 and to the U.S. Navy in October 2008. Laser JDAM was successfully employed by the Air Force in combat in Iraq in August 2008. NAVAIR’s first Low Rate Initial Production order under DAMTC was a March 2011 contract for 700 Laser JDAM kits.

Since starting JDAM production in 1998, Boeing has built more than 230,000 JDAM tail kits in its St. Charles, Mo., facility on time and at cost for use by the U.S. Department of Defense and 26 international militaries.

General Dynamics NASSCO Begins Construction of the Future USNS John Glenn

Posted on April 17, 2012 by Mary Montgomery

SAN DIEGO – General Dynamics NASSCO today began construction of the future USNS John Glenn, the second ship of the U.S. Navy’s Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) program. The 765-foot long ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the first quarter of 2014. When in service, the ship will be used as an offshore staging area for Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel and equipment.

NASSCO has construction contracts to build a total of three Mobile Landing Platform ships. The first ship of the class, the future USNS Montford Point, is currently 48 percent complete at the San Diego shipyard. Once delivered to the fleet, MLP ships will join the Maritime Prepositioning Force squadrons that are strategically located around the world to enable rapid response in a crisis. These ships will provide a “pier at sea” that will become the core of the Navy/Marine Corps sea basing concept. This capability will allow prepositioning ships to offload equipment and supplies to the MLP for transshipment to shore by other vessels.

Additional information on General Dynamics NASSCO, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), can be found at www.nassco.com.

L’US Navy met en vente son catamaran furtif Sea Shadow
30 avril 2012 – 12:41

US Navy launches official Request for Information (RFI) for F/A-XX strike fighter
The US Navy has launched mid-April an official RFI for the F/A-XX carrier-based strike fighter. The F/A-XX is intended to replace both F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter and EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft currently in service in the US Navy by the years 2030ies.

The official RFI for the sixth generation fighter, issued by the Department of the Navy Naval Air Systems Command Aircraft Division, goes as follow:

The Director for Air Warfare (OPNAV N98) has requested NAVAIR Warfare Analysis and Integration Department (AIR-4.10) to conduct trade space refinement as a precursor to an analysis of alternatives for candidate strike fighter aircraft replacements for the FA-18E/F and EA-18G.

US Navy - Page 33 Boeing_FA-XX_strike_fighter_us_navy1
F/A-XX concept
(Picture: Boeing)

CAPABILITY DESCRIPTION:The intent of this research is to solicit Industry inputs on candidate solutions for CVN based aircraft to provide multi-role capability in an A2AD operational environment. Primary missions include, but are notlimited to, air warfare (AW), strike warfare (STW), surface warfare (SUW), and close air support (CAS). Also consider the ability of your concept to provide other capabilities currently provided by strike fighteraircraft, such as organic air-to-air refueling (AAR), Tactical Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA), and airborne electronic attack (AEA). The trade space refinement activity will characterize a broad trade space, to include unmanned, optionally manned and manned aircraft. System attributes and system capabilities will be considered in the context of cost and affordability. Concepts that are derived from legacy aircraft, “clean sheet” new design aircraft, as well as innovative technology concepts specifically tailored for the operational context are all relevant. Please provide a separate whitepaper for each technology concept or family of related and complementary technology concepts; multiple white papers may be provided

US Navy - Page 33 Boeing_FA-XX_strike_fighter_us_navy

(Picture: Boeing)

As a top level summary of some of the required system capabilities, the air vehicle should be capable of addressing the following needs:

1.Capable of operating from CVN 68 and CVN 78 class aircraft carriers, as part of the Carrier AirWing (CVW), with minimal impact on the ship configuration and the operations of the rest of theCVW.

2.This aircraft will be a complementary CVW asset to the F-35C and an unmanned persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) vehicle with precision strike capability.

3.The ability to conduct persistent, penetrating operations in an A2AD operational environment.

4.The ability for an IOC in the 2030 timeframe. If a spiral approach to incorporation of systems and/or technology to achieve full operational capability is employed, provide the timeline toachieve full capability.

General Dynamics Delivers Submarine Mississippi to U.S. Navy 363 Days Ahead of Schedule

GROTON, Conn., May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- General Dynamics Electric Boat today delivered the nuclear-powered attack submarine Mississippi (SSN-782) to the U.S. Navy 363 days ahead of contract schedule and more than $60 million below target cost. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.

John Holmander, vice president and Virginia program manager for General Dynamics Electric Boat, noted that Mississippi was at the most combat-ready state of any Virginia-class submarine at delivery. He credited the Navy, the shipbuilders and the supplier base for achieving significant shipbuilding benchmarks with the delivery of Mississippi.

Mississippi is the ninth ship of the Virginia Class, the most advanced submarines in the world. These ships are providing the Navy with the capabilities it requires to retain its undersea dominance well into the 21st century. Mississippi will join the fleet in a commissioning ceremony June 2 in Pascagoula, Miss.

"When compared with the lead ship of the Virginia Class, we have reduced our construction span time by two years, and implemented improvements that reduced construction labor hours by 30 percent," Holmander said.

"These are remarkable achievements that demonstrate the skill and commitment of everyone involved in the Virginia-class submarine program," he said. "This kind of performance is the best way to help the Navy attain its shipbuilding goals and ensure our continuing success as a business."

Electric Boat and its major subcontractor, Newport News Shipbuilding, have received contracts to build the first 18 submarines of a planned 30-ship Virginia Class under a unique teaming agreement.

Third Littoral Combat Ship Successfully Completes Acceptance Trials

US Navy - Page 33 A9b3e741d91c247a7ca447c9f102a714746cff38_big

07:51 GMT, May 8, 2012 MARINETTE, Wis. | The United States' third Littoral Combat Ship, USS Fort Worth (LCS 3), successfully completed its U.S. Navy acceptance trials and will be delivered to the Navy this summer.

Fort Worth is the second surface combatant designed and built by a Lockheed Martin-led industry team. The trials, conducted in Lake Michigan from April 30 to May 4, included a four-hour full-power run and both surface and air detect-to-engage demonstrations of the ship's combat management system. Major systems and features were demonstrated, including aviation support, small boat launch handling and recovery, and ride control.

"Fort Worth performed extremely well during its trials," said LCS Program Manager Capt. John Neagley. "The ship's level of completion coupled with Marinette Marine's excellent craftsmanship resulted in relatively few material deficiencies."

"Lessons learned from our lead ship, USS Freedom, have directly contributed to the successful Acceptance Trials of our second ship," said Joe North, vice president of Littoral Ship Systems at Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems & Sensors business. "As we continue serial production, we're reducing costs and building these high-quality ships faster."

Other Freedom-variant LCSs include USS Freedom (LCS 1), which is being prepared for her second deployment; Milwaukee (LCS 5), and Detroit (LCS 7), which are under construction. The team also is currently in the early stages of planning and material procurement for Little Rock (LCS 9) and Sioux City (LCS 11), which were funded in March 2012.

The Lockheed Martin-led LCS team includes ship builder Marinette Marine Corporation, a Fincantieri company, naval architect Gibbs & Cox, as well as domestic and international teammates.

US Navy - Page 33 4468110

US Navy - Page 33 4468210
