Raytheon awarded $57.8 million Phalanx contract Agreement includes SeaRAM manufacturing
LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navy awarded Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) a contract totaling $57.8 million to overhaul and upgrade nine Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems, and manufacture two SeaRAM anti-ship missile defense systems. The agreement also includes the purchase of 20 radar upgrade kits.
"Raytheon tailors our ship self-defense systems to meet our customers' requirements," said Rick Nelson, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems' Naval Weapon Systems product line. "Phalanx and SeaRAM are layered defense solutions that lead the world in scalable technology, while providing unparalleled protection."
Close-in Defense Solutions Phalanx is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled radar and 20 mm gun system that automatically acquires, tracks and destroys enemy threats that have penetrated all other ship defense systems. More than 890 systems have been built and deployed in the navies of 25 nations.
Intended to enlarge Phalanx's keep-out range against evolving anti-ship missiles, rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft and other threats, SeaRAM uses advanced Phalanx Block 1B sensors and replaces the gun with an 11-round Rolling Airframe Missile guide. SeaRAM is aboard the USS Independence (LCS 2) and USS Coronado (LCS 4), and will soon be in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force

New Patrol Boat Coming for U.S. Navy
The new 85-foot Mark VI Patrol Boat will expand the reach of U.S. Navy inshore craft. (SAFE Boats International)
SAFE Boats International has won a competition to build a new class of patrol boats for the U.S. Navy’s Naval Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC), the company announced May 24.
The 85-foot-long Mark VI patrol boat is intended to expand the operating area of Navy patrol craft farther off shore, supplanting and replacing existing craft such as the 68-foot Mark IV and 34-foot Sea Ark patrol boats.
The $30.5 million SAFE Boat contract award is for five new patrol boats, with an option for a sixth — which, if exercised, would add another $6 million to the contract’s value.
Ultimately, the Navy intends to buy 48 Mark VIs.
The government solicitation was made via the General Services Administration’s eBuy website. Three bids were submitted, said Chris Johnson, a spokesman for the Naval Sea Systems Command.
The Mark VI boats will be built at a newly leased Large Craft Production Facility in Tacoma, Wash., SAFE Boats said in announcing the contract.
The company normally builds small craft at its facility in Bremerton, Wash., but the length of the Mark VI exceeds the capacity of the older yard.
The Tacoma facility will be able to build up to six Mark VIs at a time, the company said.
SAFE Boats’ Mark VI design, a variant of the company’s Archangel self-righting life boat, will have a waterline length of 78 feet. Powered by twin diesels and waterjets, it will have a range in excess of 600 nautical miles and be able to burn both marine grade diesel and JP-5 fuel. A Mark 38 25mm gun can be mounted forward.
In an interview earlier this month, Capt. James Hamblet, commodore of NECC’s new Coastal Riverine Force, said the boats would operate at speeds in excess of 35 knots with sprint speeds of 41 knots.
The Mark VI will have berthing and galley facilities to allow for extended missions, and shock mitigating seats will be fitted at crew work stations. The main cabin is reconfigurable to accommodate remotely operated vehicles, a medical triage area, or provide more shock-mitigated seating.
SAFE Boats also builds 25-foot Response Boat-Small and 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement craft for the U.S. Coast Guard.
The first Mark VI boats are to be delivered in fiscal 2014.

Pose du bulbe d'étrave du nouveau porte-avions américain
Pose du bulbe d'étrave du futur USS Gerald R. Ford crédits : HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
29/05/2012

Boeing delivered to the U.S. Navy the first EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft with a cockpit subassembly
BANGALORE, India, May 30, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] on May 3 delivered to the U.S. Navy the first EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft with a cockpit subassembly produced by Bangalore-based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The subassembly provides cockpit floodlighting compatible with the aircraft's Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS).
Boeing awarded BEL an initial contract in March 2011 for work on Super Hornet cockpit subassemblies. That contract included options to renew annually for up to four years. As a result of BEL's demonstrated performance, Boeing recently exercised an option to renew the contract for another year.
"BEL continues to demonstrate its capabilities and its position as a valued partner to Boeing," said Dennis Swanson, vice president of International Business Development for Boeing Defense, Space & Security in India. "BEL's work on P-8I, Super Hornets and Growlers is another example of how Indian companies are becoming a part of the global supply chain while Boeing helps them expand their opportunities across the global aerospace industry."
Other EA-18G parts produced by BEL include a complex-machined stowage panel for the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System connector cable and an avionics cooling system fan test switch panel with an NVIS-compatible floodlight assembly. Marinette Marine to hand over 2nd littoral combat ship today
More
MARINETTE — Lockheed Martin will deliver the future USS Fort Worth to the U.S. Navy today.
The ship, built at Marinette Marine Corp. in Marinette, is the second littoral combat ship the company has produced for the Navy.
Navy crew will move into the ship beginning today. The future Fort Worth is expected to stay in Marinette through late summer while crews prepare for transit to Galveston, Texas, where it will be commissioned in September.
"They've been through a lot of familiarization training, a lot of classroom training and have had hands-on training because they were with us during (acceptance sea) trials," said Joe North, vice president of Littoral Ship Systems for Lockheed Martin.
The Navy said it intends to purchase 55 of the vessels. Two variations of the littoral combat ship are in production — the version built at Marinette and another by Austal USA in Mobile, Ala. Through fiscal year 2015, the contracts could be worth $3.6 billion to Lockheed Martin and $3.5 billion to Austal USA, according to the Navy.
Electricians Mate 1st Class Lidia Dorame is one of the crew who will take over the future Fort Worth today.
"We're excited. We've been waiting for this day," the 13-year veteran of the Navy said Tuesday while standing near the 57 mm gun turret on the foredeck of the ship. "We've been training a lot. I've been with the command since September 2010, so I've been training since then."
The core crew of the LCS is about 40, a reduction from other classes of the ships.
Marinette Marine has been ramping up production at the yard. It has about 1,350 employees and is expected to peak around 2,200 workers.
North said lessons learned while building the first ship — USS Freedom — were applied to Fort Worth, cutting overall man hours on the construction of Fort Worth by about 30 percent.
Lockheed Martin has stressed the need to keep delivering ships on time and on budget and said today's delivery comes two months ahead of the contract. The average cost per ship is $360 million.
The Navy faced several cracks and some corrosion in the first ships it says have been dealt with — including design changes to follow-on ships.
Two other ships in the class — the future USS Detroit and USS Milwaukee — are under construction at Marinette Marine as part of a 10-ship contract. Lockheed Martin is expected to bid on building another 10 ships in fiscal year 2016. That could carry construction through 2030 and beyond if approved, North said.

06:23 GMT, June 11, 2012 TUCSON, Ariz. | The U.S. Navy awarded Raytheon Company a $338 million contract for the Tomahawk Block IV tactical cruise missile. The contract, which was announced by the Department of Defense on June 7, includes replenishment of weapons used during Operation ODYSSEY DAWN and procurement for the government's fiscal year 2012.
"Tomahawk Block IV is important for U.S. national security because it enables commanders to precisely engage heavily-defended and high-value targets from extremely long distances," said Capt. Joseph Mauser, the U.S. Navy's Tomahawk program manager. "With more than 2,000 combat uses and 500 successful tests, Tomahawk has proven highly reliable and effective."
The contract calls for Raytheon to build and deliver the Tomahawk Block IV cruise missiles, and provide warranties, flight test and life-cycle support. Production is scheduled to begin this year.
"Tomahawk has a record of reliability, effectiveness and accuracy that no other tactical cruise missile in the world can come close to matching," said Harry Schulte, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems' Air Warfare Systems. "This is made possible by more than 250 Raytheon employees building Tomahawk and supporting its depot, and by our suppliers across the country. They are critical to our success and the security of our country and our allies."
THE TOMAHAWK BLOCK IV
With a range of more than 1,000 nautical miles (1,150 statute miles), the Tomahawk Block IV is a surface- and submarine-launched, precision-strike, stand-off weapon. Tomahawk is designed for long-range precision-strike missions against high-value and heavily defended targets, such as integrated air defense systems.
Tomahawk Block IV employs a two-way satellite datalink that enables a strike controller to flex the missile in flight to preprogrammed alternate targets or redirect it to a new target. This targeting flexibility includes the capability to loiter over the battlefield and await a more critical target.
• More than 2,000 Tomahawks employed in combat. • Tomahawk is integrated on a variety of U.S. and U.K. surface and sub-surface platforms, including the Ohio-, Astute- and Trafalgar-class submarines. • Tomahawk Block IV has a range of more than 1,000 nautical miles (1,150 statute miles).

Northrop Grumman to Deliver Advanced Threat Warning Sensors to the U.S. Navy
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. | The U.S. Navy has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation an early operational production contract to deliver Advanced Threat Warning (ATW) sensors, an integral component of the Department of Navy Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (DoN LAIRCM) system.
Under the terms of the $25.5 million contract, Northrop Grumman will deliver 110 ATW sensors and will upgrade 200 processors for integration as part of the currently fielded DoN LAIRCM system, which protects aircrews and aircraft from battlefield threats. The ATW sensor is form-fit and A-kit compatible with the currently deployed DoN LAIRCM missile warning system.
"Northrop Grumman's multifunction ATW provides our warfighters with three proven capabilities in one lightweight sensor, including missile warning, laser warning, and hostile fire detection," said Carl Smith, vice president of infrared countermeasures programs at Northrop Grumman's Land and Self Protection Systems division. "ATW's multifunctionality can significantly improve affordability, while reducing size, weight and power, over four individual subsystems."
ATW provides instant warning of heat-seeking missiles, small arms fire, medium-caliber machine gun fire, anti-aircraft artillery, unguided rockets and laser-guided weapons, thereby dramatically improving overall aircrew situational awareness and survivability. ATW provides immediate information enabling the aircrew to avoid the threat or to send information offboard directing ground forces or other aircraft to respond. It can be integrated with a variety of onboard displays including threat warning indicators, multifunction displays and helmet-mounted displays, while contributing to overall battlefield situational awareness as part of a common operating picture.
This award builds on the $35 million contract awarded to Northrop Grumman in 2011 by the Naval Air Systems Command to develop upgrades to the fielded DoN LAIRCM infrared missile warning system. Northrop Grumman designed and built the DoN LAIRCM system.

Photo Release -- U.S. Navy, Northrop Grumman Complete X-47B Flight Testing at Edwards Air Force Base, Move Second Unmanned Aircraft to East Coast
SAN DIEGO, June 14, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The first major phase of flight testing the X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) demonstrator aircraft came to a successful conclusion on May 15 when Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) and the U.S. Navy wrapped up testing at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.
Photos accompanying this release are available at http://media.globenewswire.com/noc/mediagallery.html?pkgid=13282. A new X-47B video is also available at https://youtu.be/WQy-49aptKk.
The airworthiness test phase, which comprised 23 flights by two air vehicles, proved that the X-47B will perform properly at all speeds, weights and altitudes associated with the Navy's Unmanned Combat Air System Carrier Demonstration (UCAS-D) program. The flights included tests of several aircraft maneuvers required in the carrier environment, helping to reduce risks associated with operating a tailless, unmanned aircraft from a Navy aircraft carrier.
Northrop Grumman is the Navy's prime contractor for the UCAS-D program.
"The X-47B flight test program at Edwards will be remembered as a very successful collaboration among the Navy, Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Air Force Flight Test Center," said Carl Johnson, vice president and Navy UCAS Enterprise program manager for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "The team has done outstanding work testing and preparing the aircraft for the next phase of the program, which will take place at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md."
Earlier this morning, he added, the team completed the cross-country move of the second of two X-47Bs built by Northrop Grumman from Edwards to Patuxent River. Carrier suitability testing of the aircraft will begin later this summer.
"The X-47B flight test program at Edwards demonstrated convincingly the maturity, durability and performance of this revolutionary new unmanned system," said Johnson. "Through innovation, hard work and an enduring partnership with our customer, we laid the foundation for the upcoming carrier integration sea trials."
While at Edwards, the X-47B aircraft reached altitudes exceeding 15,000 feet and demonstrated multiple maneuvers relevant to carrier operations, including extending and retracting a tail hook, completing an autonomous "touch-and-go" landing – an aviation first – and performing landings at a high sink rate and in a heavy weight configuration.
The Northrop Grumman team is currently finalizing the software that will be required to enter carrier suitability testing of the X-47B. That testing will include catapult launches, arrested landings and wireless remote deck handling of the aircraft.
The first X-47B was moved to Patuxent River in December 2011. It is currently undergoing electromagnetic interference testing, which is designed to demonstrate that the X-47B is compatible with the electromagnetic signal environment of an aircraft carrier.
In 2013, the UCAS-D program plans to demonstrate the ability of the tailless, autonomous, low-observable relevant X-47B demonstrator to operate safely from a Navy aircraft carrier, including launch, recovery, bolter and wave-off performance. Demonstration of autonomous aerial refueling by the X-47B is planned for 2014. The program will also mature and demonstrate technologies required for future carrier- capable unmanned air system programs. SAN DIEGO, July 2 (UPI) -- Gun and other components of the warfare mission package of the U.S. Navy's Littoral Combat Ships have completed Phase One development testing.
The Navy said the tests involved surface warfare components such as the MK 46 gun system, .50-caliber and 7.62mm machine guns, rigid inflatable boats and an MH-60R helicopter outfitted with a Hellfire simulator.
"The capabilities included in the surface warfare mission package will project power and presence in key overseas environments," said Rear Adm. James Murdoch, program executive officer Littoral Combat Ships. "An LCS outfitted with these capabilities, teamed with the ship's inherent speed and maneuverability, will provide a capability in a single platform never before available to the U.S. Navy."
The tests were performed recently using the USS Freedom, the first ship of the LCS class, which is modular and as such allows rapid reconfiguring of mission packages for fleet protection from small boats and other asymmetrical threats.
"Although data collected during testing remains under analysis, the systems accomplished each of the challenging test scenarios," said Capt. John Ailes, program manager for LCS Mission Module Integration. "The LCS program continues to mature and demonstrate that this ground-breaking concept of operations works and works well."
The Navy said Phase Two developmental testing of the weapons package will begin in August, with initial operational testing and evaluation scheduled for early 2014.
In addition to surface warfare packages, the Navy plans mine-counter-measure and anti-submarine packages for the 55 LCS ships it will acquire.

Successful Test of Interceptor Missile off Hawaii
The U.S. military has successfully conducted a test flight of the Navy's newest interceptor missile by shooting down a ballistic missile target off Hawaii.
The Missile Defense Agency says the USS Lake Erie detected and tracked the separating missile launched from Kauai's Pacific Missile Range Facility on Tuesday night.
It's the second consecutive successful intercept test of the SM-3 Block IB missile and the second-generation Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system, which is operated from ships. The first successful intercept test took place last month.
The agency says the test was the 23rd successful intercept in 28 flight test firings for the Aegis system.
The system is the sea-based midcourse component of the agency's Ballistic Missile Defense System and is designed to intercept and destroy short- to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats.
