DATE:25/03/09 SOURCE:Flight International Elbit Systems lands helmet-mounted display deal with South Korea By Arie Egozi
Elbit Systems has received a contract to supply advanced helmet-mounted display systems for the South Korean army's Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) programme.
Under the deal, Elbit will supply prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries with equipment for its ongoing development effort, which is expected to lead to the manufacture of up to 250 tactical transport helicopters. The Israeli company's initial contract covers those development aircraft due to be delivered in 2009-10, but it believes the agreement could lead to follow-on orders to equip the entire KUH fleet and additional military rotorcraft.
"We believe this selection will lead to further head-up display projects in South Korea and worldwide," says Yoram Shmuely, co-general manager of Elbit's Aerospace Division.
Elbit says its helmet-mounted display systems enable helicopter pilots to fly with their "head out of the cockpit", boosting situational awareness and safety by projecting essential flight data, plus navigation waypoints and threat data into their line of sight.

Seoul Dispatches Mine Hunters to Study Warship Disaster The South Korean Navy has deployed mine detector ships to search for any signs that the 1200-tonne warship ROKS Cheonan was sunk by North Korea. Defence ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said there were no abnormal activities by North Korean submersible craft or submarines in relation to this incident, according to straitstimes.com. South Korea found no evidence regarding the involvement of North Korea in the incident, despite earlier speculating that a North Korean mine, either drifting or deliberately placed, might have caused the disaster. A 60-member investigation team of military and civilian experts, including specialists in naval weaponry, explosives and shipbuilding engineering, are searching the area for possible shrapnel or parts of a torpedo or mine, according to a spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.

South Korean Navy Grounds Lynx Helos
SEOUL - The South Korean Navy has suspended its fleet of Lynx anti-submarine helicopters following the back-to-back crashes of two of them last week.
The service ordered emergency safety inspections of the British helicopters, a Navy official said April 19. Investigators are looking into the cause of the crashes at the same time, he said.
The Navy had operated 25 Lynx helicopters modified for anti-submarine and surface warfare. The first batch of 12 Mk.99 Lynx helicopters was delivered to the service in 1990, and the second batch of 13 Mk.99A Super Lynx helicopters in 1999. Possible causes include an engine problem and pilot fatigue, said the official. The export variants for South Korea are powered by two Rolls-Royce Gem 42-1 engines, whose production was halted years ago. The Navy therefore has had difficulty supplying the Gem engines but managed to secure used engines from the Royal Navy, he said. "Investigators are looking into all possible causes of the crashes, including an engine problem, but nothing has been confirmed," the spokesman said. Alexander W. Jun, regional director of Rolls-Royce Korea, said, "It's true that the production of the Gem engine has been suspended, but there was not much difficulty in supplying the ROK Navy with the engine." On April 15, a Lynx crashed off the country's southwest coast, leaving one pilot dead and three other crew members missing. The helicopter disappeared from radar at 8:53 p.m. after losing contact with its fleet command while patrolling 15 kilometers off the coast, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The JCS denied an allegation that the Lynx had been responding to an invasion by a North Korean submarine. "The helicopter was on a routine nighttime mission," JCS spokesman Col. Park Sung-woo said. The incident occurred as the country's military was being placed on a high alert following the sinking of one of its warships in waters off the disputed sea border with North Korea. The 1,200-ton corvette Cheonan, with 104 crew members on board, went down after an unexplained explosion. Fifty-eight sailors were rescued before the ship sank, but 46 others were missing. The bodies of 38 sailors have been recovered while eight others remain missing. A joint investigation team involving civil and military experts is probing into the cause of the sinking, with more evidence suggesting an external impact caused by a torpedo attack or a mine explosion. The other Lynx crashed at 22:13 p.m. April 17 in waters off the west coast on its way back to a destroyer after chasing "unidentified targets" near an island off the sea border, the JCS said. The targets were later confirmed as a group of birds, it said in a news release. The helicopter made an emergency landing and the three pilots aboard were rescued, said the release. The helicopter was largely undamaged and was later retrieved, it said.

A torpedo has been determined as the probable cause of the sinking of the Navy corvette Cheonan, according to a preliminary inspection of the split surface of the ship after it was salvaged from the West Sea. Defense Minister Kim Tae-young told reporters Sunday, "Basically, I think the bubble jet effect caused by a heavy torpedo is the most likely cause." Kim added the ongoing investigation is looking into other causes as well.
An investigation team reached a tentative conclusion on Sunday that the cause was a "non-contact external explosion" in the lower left hand section of the vessel resulting from either a torpedo or a mine.
"The possibility of an underwater non-contact explosion is bigger than that of an underwater contact explosion, considering the shape of the severed surfaces and conditions," chief investigator Yoon Duk-yong told reporters. The investigation team once again ruled out an internal explosion because no damage was done to the ammunition storage or the fuel tank, while the covering of the electrical wiring in the vessel remained in good condition and there were no signs of an internal fire. There are no scratches on the bottom of the ship, and the sonar dome is in good condition, making it improbable that the ship ran onto a reef. Also, the jagged and tattered surface of the split section led investigators to rule out metal fatigue.
A probe of both the stern and bow of the Cheonan by the investigators showed that a 3.2 m section of the lower left hand section of the vessel and a 9.9 m section of the starboard side were lost in the blast and the hull around the split section was bent upwards. This demonstrates that a blast occurred in the lower left hand section of the vessel and ripped through the upper right hand portion.
Torpedo likely sank S. Korean ship No contact, but damage believed caused by underwater blast Last Updated: Sunday, April 25, 2010 | 7:06 PM ET

Investigators say they have new information regarding last month's sinking of a South Korean naval ship that indicates the force of a passing torpedo may have caused the disaster.
Defence Minister Kim Tae-young told reporters Sunday he believes a bubble jet effect is likely to blame. The term is used for the destructive column of water created after a torpedo is launched.
Yoon Duk-Yong, co-chair of the joint investigation team, said officials arrived at this conclusion following initial inspections of the wreckage and added the results are not yet definitive. However, he said there was no possibility of an internal explosion or a collision with the reef.
Kim said it would take up to a month before the joint investigation team comes out with its final report.
The remarks bolster suspicions that North Korea's involvement is possible with a torpedo or a mine attack, although Seoul has not directly blamed Pyongyang for the blast and the North has denied any involvement.
The site of the sinking is near an area where the rival Koreas have fought three times since 1999, most recently a November clash that left one North Korean soldier dead and three others wounded.
The two Koreas are still technically at war because their 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.
The Cheonan was on a routine patrol on March 26 when an explosion split it in two in one of South Korea's worst naval disasters.
Forty bodies have been recovered so far, but six crew members are still unaccounted for and are presumed dead.
South Korea's coast guard was able to rescue 58 crew members from waters near the blast site, close to the disputed maritime border with North Korea.
On Saturday, a South Korean crew used a giant floating crane to lift the final half of the 1,200-tonne warship onto a barge off Baengnyeong Island.

mais aussi : ROKAF's 41st F-15K in maiden flight last April 20. Some parts are produced by KAI and Samsung Techwin and being sold to Singapore and Japan besides ROKAF.
KAI also co-produces AH-64D for Singapore and Japan; it's a great mystery why there's none being built for Korea.
AC332 and S-92 VIP transport, EC225 for firefighting and SAR. We need more of them built now as ASW and mine warfare variants (AC532, H-92, EC725).

Korean Military to Strengthen Anti-Submarine Drill
Meanwhile the South Korean military plans to beef up security in the waters near its maritime border with North Korea. Reports indicate the South Korean Navy will conduct more anti-submarine drills in the West Sea where a warship sank in March. claiming the lives of 46 sailors. Seoul's National Defense Ministry also plans to request government funds to improve underwater surveillance by modernizing sonar devices and naval radar systems. And more joint anti-submarine warfare exercises between South Korean and US forces could take place in the East and West Seas. In a report to President Lee Myung-bak South Korean defense chief Kim Tae-young acknowledged that there was a security loophole when the ship, according to him, was "ambushed." He added March 26, the day of the sinking will be remembered by the South Korean military as a "day of infamy."

About now KAI is in charge of turning the Surion into a heavy attack variant for fulfilling the AH-X program as a substitute to the Apache option; the Surion has been equipped with 700-ST-701K engines reverse-engineered by Samsung Techwin from Apache's 700-GE-701D to incorporate the FADEC feature, and avionics and other flight utilities have already been fleshed out for interoperability among all Surion variants (you can imagine the Surion as AS532 Cougars on steroids with those FADEC-enabled engines fitted on; it's regretful though that KAI did not decide to make it as big as the AS725 Super Cougars). The development and integration of a high-performance fire control radar and system remains the final obstacle to a full attack platform.
Two Surions have already began several flyovers with Black Hawks in Sacheon city in south Gyeongsang province

Traces of Explosive Found on Sunken S. Korean Ship By CHOE SANG-HUN Published: May 10, 2010
SEOUL, South Korea — Forensic experts investigating the wreckage of a South Korean warship that sank near the sea border with North Korea have found traces of an explosive component commonly used in torpedoes and mines, South Korea’s defense minister said Monday.
The 1,200-ton corvette, the Cheonan, sank on March 26 after a mysterious blast split the ship in half. The South Korean government has said a torpedo attack was the likely cause of the blast, and many South Koreans say they believe the North was responsible.
North Korea has denied any involvement in the sinking.
“It is true that traces of RDX, a chemical substance used in making torpedoes, have been found,” Defense Minister Kim Tae-young said Monday, referring to a component common to many military explosives. He said that there was “a high possibility” that a torpedo was the cause of the explosion, but that it was also too soon to conclude definitively that it was the cause.
The material was found on the ship’s smokestack and in samples of sand from the site of the sinking, said Rear Adm. Moon Byung-ok, a spokesman for the investigation team. He noted that RDX is also used in making mines.
During the briefing on Monday, neither Mr. Kim nor Admiral Moon mentioned North Korea. Forty-six South Korean sailors were killed or remain missing in the explosion.

T-50 trainer jets in full service
The Air Force said Thursday that it has received the 50th and last of the advanced T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer jets from the aircraft's manufacturer Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).
The delivery of the T-50 trainer jets jointly built by Lockheed Martin of the United States began in December 2005. KAI is the prime contractor, and Lockheed Martin is the principal subcontractor, assisting with development and international marketing.
The Air Force placed an order for 82 T-50 variants, including 50 advanced jet trainers, 22 TA-50 light armed aircraft and 10 other T-50Bs modified for aerobatic performances.
``I sincerely congratulate you on being fully operational with the world's best T-50 advanced trainer jet," President Lee Myung-bak said in a congratulatory message. "I expect the successful production of T-50 aircraft with outstanding pilot training capability will help achieve our dream of entering the world's seventh largest aerospace power within 10 years.''
The single-engine trainer aircraft features digital flight controls and a modern ground-based training system, which helps new pilots smoothly transition into advanced fighters, such the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightening II, as well as the F-16 Fighting Falcon. It has a top speed of Mach 1.5. The per-unit price is about $25 million. The government is accelerating efforts to make its first overseas sale of the``luxury'' T-50, tying the success of the jet to becoming a major arms exporter and reviving its economy. The government aims to reach $3 billion in defense exports by 2012, and industry and government officials agree that sales of the T-50 are essential to attaining that goal. But thus far, the marketing of the trainer has produced no tangible results. The T-50 is competing with Italy's M-346 over deals in the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Israel and Iraq. The United States is also said to be looking to open a bid for trainer acquisition in the near future.
