- Korea Utility Helicopter Soars Up to the Sky
The maiden test flight of Korea's first utility helicopter Surion was conducted at the Korea Aerospace Industries on June 22 in Sacheon, South Chungcheong.
The helicopter flew in the sky for about 20 minutes, beginning with flying in the same place 100 feet above the ground. It also turned its direction 30 degrees to each left and right side. The chopper showed its rapid maneuvering capabilities by spinning around 360 degrees.
With two pilots and one technician on board, the flying performance showed its soaring, stationary hovering, S-shaped maneuvering and diving.
The helicopter's name combines "suri" meaning eagle and "on" meaning perfection.
The improved performance followed Surion's maiden flight on March 10 when a 8.7-metric-ton aircraft demonstrated a stationary hover at 30 feet about seven months after its rollout.
The performance is organized to introduce the process of making the chopper and elevate people's interest toward the helicopter. It also aims to boost credibility of domestic technology of making helicopter toward foreign countries in order to lay a ground work for exporting the product in the future.
"Despite the fact that our military ranks [seventh] in the world in operating the number of military helicopter, we have been relying on foreign countries in importing major technologies in developing functions and maintenance," said Byun Moo-keun, the Commissioner of Defense Acquisition Program Administration, in his speech on behalf of Korea's Defense Minister Kim Tae-young. "The successful development of Surion has not only led in operating the military tactics efficiently but also formed the basis in improving our own aerospace industry technology."
Byun also said Korea's defense capabilities could improve if other helicopter projects are implemented without problems.
The test flights will continue through September before initial production of the helicopter. Mass production is to begin by March 2012.
The government and private firms have poured a combined 1.3 trillion won ($1 billion) into the aircraft’s development since it began in 2006. South Korea has produced propeller-driven [aircraft] and supersonic jets in the past, but the Surion makes it one of only 11 countries in the world to turn out an indigenous helicopter.
Helped by Europe’s leading helicopter manufacturer, Eurocopter, Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. and other local companies designed the Surion, with 60 percent of all parts and components being made in the country. Officials have stressed the Surion’s ability to serve in both defense and civilian roles is significant in terms of potential growth.
The Ministry of Knowledge Economy, which contributed heavily to the project, said the aircraft will help South Korea make inroads into the fiercely competitive global aerospace market. In addition to the prototype, three other aircraft will be built to conduct various flight safety tests. Full-scale production is to begin in June 2012.
South Korea’s aging fleet of UH-1Hs and 500MD choppers, many of which have been in service for over 30 years, are set to be phased out. Independent sources speculate the South Korean military may require as many as 250 Surion choppers. Seoul also aims to win 300 overseas military orders for the KUH during the next 25 years, a government official said. That is roughly 30 percent of the projected global demand for Surion-type choppers, which are larger than the UH-1 Iroquois but smaller than the UH-60 Black Hawks.
The Surion is designed to fly a fully equipped squad of troops or an equal amount of equipment for two hours. It can climb 152 meters per minute and maintain a stable hover at 3,000 meters. Special emphasis was placed in the design on meeting variable combat conditions needed to ensure the survival of the crew.

- S. Korea Deploys Sentry Robot Along N. Korea Border
SEOUL - South Korea has deployed a sentry robot capable of detecting and killing intruders along the heavily fortified border with North Korea, officials said July 13.
"Our military has been testing such robots along the border," a defense ministry spokesman said Two robots with surveillance, tracking, firing and voice recognition systems were integrated into a single unit, he said, declining to give details. The robot unit costing 400 million won ($330,000) was installed last month at a guard post in the central section of the Demilitarised Zone, which bisects the peninsula, Yonhap news agency said. It quoted an unidentified military official as saying the ministry would deploy sentry robots along the world's last Cold War frontier if the test is successful. The robot uses heat and motion detectors to sense possible threats, and alerts command centers, Yonhap said. If the command center operator cannot identify possible intruders through the robot's audio or video communications system, the operator can order it to fire its gun or 40mm automatic grenade launcher. South Korea is also developing highly sophisticated combat robots armed with weapons and sensors that could complement human soldiers on battlefields. It has a largely conscripted military of 655,000 against Pyongyang's 1.2 million-strong force, but a falling birth rate means Seoul will struggle in the future to maintain troop numbers.

S. Korea Developing Longer-Range Missiles: Report
SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea has developed a longer-range cruise missile capable of hitting nuclear or military sites in North Korea, a report said July 17.
The state-run Agency for Defense Development has begun manufacturing the ground-to-ground Hyunmu-3C with a range of up to 937 miles (1,500 kilometers), Yonhap news agency quoted an unidentified defense official as saying The Hyunmu-3C missile would also be able to reach parts of China, Japan and Russia. The previous version of the Hyunmu had a range of only 1,000 kilometers. The report could not immediately be confirmed. Under an agreement with the United States, which stations 28,500 troops in the country and guarantees a nuclear "umbrella" in case of war, Seoul limits its ballistic missiles to a maximum range of 300 kilometers. But it is allowed to extend the range of its terrain-hugging cruise missiles as long as their payload stays under 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). South Korea has pushed for longer-range weaponry to counter a threat from hundreds of North Korean ballistic missiles. The North has about 600 Scud missiles capable of hitting targets in South Korea, and possibly also of reaching Japanese territory in some cases. There are another 200 Rodong-1 missiles which could reach Tokyo. In addition the North has three times test-launched intercontinental Taepodong missiles. Tensions have risen since the South and the United States, citing the findings of a multinational investigation, accused the North of torpedoing a South Korean warship near the tense sea border in March. The North angrily denies involvement and says a U.N. Security Council statement on July 9 - which condemned the attack without specifying the culprit - proves its point. After the U.N. statement it reiterated conditional willingness to return to stalled six-party nuclear disarmament talks. Seoul's unification ministry, which handles cross-border ties, said the North appears to be preparing a diplomatic offensive to lessen tensions. In a weekly newsletter the ministry said the North seems willing to "turn the critical mood around through active dialogue" following the U.N. statement, which Pyongyang claimed as a diplomatic victory. The South says its neighbor must first apologize for the attack on the ship which cost 46 lives and punish those responsible. defensenews

- Thales, Samsung Thales Receive order for X-band Satcom Terminals by HDW
08:29 GMT, July 22, 2010 defpro.com | The German-designed Type 214 submarines, selected by the Republic of Korea’s Navy for its KSS II Batch 2 submarine programme, will be equipped with Thales X-band Satcom Terminals, as the French-based company announced yesterday. After having received the first three Type 214 submarines, which were ordered in 2000 and assembled by Hyundai Heavy Industries, South Korea ordered a second batch, consisting of six submarines of this conventional, Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) equipped diesel-electric submarines.
The French company explains that “the delivered system is issued from Thales’s DIVESAT technology and belongs to the second generation of submarine Satcom Terminals manufactured by Thales.” According to Thales, the communication solution, which was jointly developed with is South Korean-based partner, Samsung Thales, has been selected by the German submarine shipbuilder Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) – a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems – to equip the next two submarines which are to join the Navy by 2018.
Thales claims that the Satcom terminal provides delivers high tracking performances even in extreme environment and guarantees high-level integrated communications, offering the latest innovations in terms of data rate requirements for voice and data transmission. The system is available in two versions, one fitted with a 40 cm antenna and one fitted with a 75 cm antenna, both capable of operation at different frequency bands (X, Ku, Ka or EHF). The DIVESAT solution follows the former generation introduced in the late 1980s which, according to Thales, has demonstrated decades of trouble-free operation.
In late May 2010, Samsung Thales announced that it was awarded a contract by HDW worth 12 billion won ($10 million), to provide its communication systems technology for the six newly ordered Sohn Wonyil-class submarines. As DefenceNews reported in May, Samsung Thames senior vice president Kim Gyu-seok sees this contract as an opportunity “to enter a new market worth hundreds of millions of won, which is growing continuously due to the increasing worldwide demand for military IT equipment like the satellite communication for submarines.”
The submarines of the second batch are expected to feature some technical improvements, reportedly, including the AIP system which allows the submarines to remain submerged for periods longer than two weeks. The submarines stealthy abilities will allow the South Korean Navy to enhance its blue-water capabilities. The greater part of the country’s submarine force consists of nine Type 209 diesel-electric attack submarines (Chang Bogo class), developed by HDW in the 1960s and in service with the South Korean Navy since the early 1990s. The last of the Type 209 submarines joined the Navy in 2001.
The country’s antagonist in the North reportedly has a fleet of four former Soviet Whiskey-class submarines, 22 Chinese Romeo-class submarines, and DPRK-built Romeo-class submarines. However, there is no reliable information about the status of the partly ageing submarines. An international investigation of the sinking of the South Korean Cheonan corvette concluded that a North Korean submarine was involved in the incident on 26 March in the Yellow Sea, which significantly raised tensions on the Korean peninsula.
In response to this incident in which 46 sailors left their lives, several high-ranking US officials, including the President and the Secretary of State, have repeatedly expressed their uncompromised support of South Korea and warned North Korea of making any further diplomatic or military provocations. As a demonstration of force and commitment, the two allies have announced that they will carry out a number of naval exercises. UPI yesterday reported, that a joint statement by US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and senior South Korean defence officials stated the exercise, scheduled for 25 July, will send “a clear message to North Korea that its aggressive behaviour must stop and that we are committed to together enhancing our combined defensive capabilities.”

- South Korean Air Force to Upgrade Faulty F-5 Ejection Seats
The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) has decided to equip its fleet of F-5 aircraft with advanced ejection seats to help save the lives of pilots in case of emergency landing. The move comes after a month-long investigation into the cause of an F-5F jet crash in June 2010 that killed two pilots, according to the Korea Times. About 50bn won ($4.2m) will be spent to upgrade the ejection seats of 150 F-5s, which will be deployed by the ROKAF between 2011 and 2013. The air force operates 170 of 480 F-5 fighters, which accounts for 35% of South Korea's air power. airforce-technology
